Thank you, Ranger Karlton! I'm proud to say I'm related to General Gibbon. My grandmother is a descendant of the General's parents, John Heysham Gibbon(s) and Catharine Lardner Gibbon(s). It took a ton of family research to pin this down due to part of the family dropping the "s" from Gibbons. I love listening to all your lectures, Sir!

@@surfgod509 Thanks! I began studying the US Civil War in 6th grade, but didn't think to research my family until the late 1990s when I remembered my maternal grandmother's maiden name was Gibbon(s). Took a while to dig all that up.

Great presentation! Very interesting how so many officers had to leave the artillery to gain a promotion. Have always been interested in Gibbon and this presentation answered a lot of questions. Thanks so much!

So who exactly within the War Department made this ludicrous decision about eliminating the Artillery Branch for officers on the eve/outbreak of the Civil War which would see some of the most ferocious use of artillery up to that point in modern warfare??? Just goes to show us that even back then then they made idiotic decisions just like now. Gibbons was one of a few subject matter experts in artillery at that time and he has to transfer to the Infantry just to stay in the Army. I’m just shaking my head is disbelief. I’ve seen it firsthand as a Marine Corps officer.
