The only people NASCAR listens to are the TV Networks, which is a really big issue in and of itself. This has also led us right into the thick of a lot of the current problems. NASCAR wants an entertainment package that can be pitched to a network for billions of dollars. Most fans, teams, and drivers want a safe, raceable package that has some degree of gray area to be their sandbox. Sometimes these agendas align, sometimes they don't.
I tune in (for over 40 years) to see a RACE, not a SHOW. I think there are a helluva lot of people just like me that are about to the end of the line with NASCAR.

I disagree on the good racing part of this new car. I think the racing is more aggressive, which CAN be more exciting for viewers.. BUT, the car being as tough as it is takes away the risk of self inflicted damage when bumping. We need that concern, because its the only thing that keeps these drivers from constantly dive bombing their competition.

That's an easy answer. There's one and only reason, the FUN has been taken out of nascar and other series. Just listen to the announcers from 10-30 years ago compared to today. The excitement and enjoyment is no longer there. Who wants to pay for a seat in the stands when everything that we loved has been stripped away for one reason or another. It's sad that it's come to this. Every new rule or regulation takes away a little bit more of why people used to fill up the stands.

Great interview! I agree with Mark but do have a question... Do you think what is hurting NASCAR isn't the car or the product but rather NASCAR constantly trying to reinvent itself with gimmicky race layouts/formats and constant schedule changes?
For instance, we used to know that the Bristol races were the first Sunday in April and last Saturday in August, etc.
Fans scheduled their vacations around the NASCAR schedule but not so much in today's world. I think NASCAR may be hurting its attendance revenue by not having a set schedule which potentially keeps core fans from attending.

What happened to the Brickyard 400? Dirt at Bristol is not gaining traction(pun intended)! Races starting later in the day, daytona 500 ending at night now. I used to go to Poconos 2 times every year, that is gone!

Wow, as a fan of Mark Martin since he joined RR in the late 80's, I never thought I'd hear him "tow the party line" like he is doing today. I couldn't disagree with him more in his assessment of the state of NASCAR today. There is absolutely no way NASCAR is better today than it was in the 70's, 80's and 90's. How in the heck can he make such a comment? NASCAR has a stranglehold on everything from technology to drivers to changing the rules in the middle of the game. Mark and the "old school" drivers of yester-year were the reason I watched and enjoyed NASCAR so much but after losing Dale, Sr. NASCAR has been in a steady downward spiral which continues today. So sad that Mark can't see the forest for the trees. Once Mark retired, NASCAR has gone steadily downhill and I see nothing changing that unless there's a complete change of philosophy in how racing should be conducted. There's just no enjoyment watching this sorry excuse for racing today.

I only wish those cars were as safe as today's cars are. No one wants to see someone get hurt or worse. One thing that I hate is wrecking someone to win. I for one am a fan of nascar in its glory years mid 80s till early 2000s the best racing in my opinion. There might not of been 20 drivers that you would think had a realistic chance of winning week to week like you do today but you always had more underdogs that would come out of no were and get a win. Derrike cope at Daytona n Dover in 1990, lake speed winning Darlington in 88, Phil parsons winning talladega in 88, Bobby hillin in 86 at talladega. We don’t really have as much of the under dog drivers run good enough to win unless the main guys get taken out. I don’t just like the racing n how people handle themselves anymore. Never liked playoffs in racing but like Dale Jr said on his podcast the winner of the championship shouldn’t be decided by one race. There should be change were least those last 4 drivers have to run the last 3 races of the season against each other which would be more interesting then just one race. Maybe start the first round with 12 races left instead of 10 then after every 3 races 4 people get eliminated. I’m currently watching a race from 89 and I am enjoying that race more then anything I’ve watched today but we all have our taste and opinions and have no problem with anyone liking todays product it’s just not for me though.

Nascar Demolition Derby needs a rule that if you are the cause of a wreck then you go to the rear. The smarter drivers will understand a rule like this and good clean racing will get better.

The new rules and regulations has killed innovation, invention, and progress forward. Once you tell everyone they have to be the exact same it kills the progression into the future. Until they revert we'll be stuck here. If anything they should have restricted the amount of money teams could speed per car. That way everyone is within the same amount of dollars but can spend it freely however they see fit.

I agree with mark. I thought the same way. I ain't the same as it was growing up. But now I'm back as a fan. The racing is tight and very competitive. I do feel as if nascar has hit the mute button on a lot of drivers and they don't get to show their true personalities. Which we need in the sport.

I would have loved to watched you race in the 70s. I was fortunate enough to see you race in the BGN series at Orange County Speedway where you won in 1987. Been a big fan for a long time. I enjoy watching old nascar telecast on UA-cam. The cars, drivers and announcers is more exciting then the races today. The different cars makes. Cars that look different and not all the same. Remember the aero back Chevies and Pontiacs made to battle the Fords? It was just better racing back in the day. NASCAR has become IROC racing now.

The racing is great. It really is. My opinion is irrelevant but, as a fan, seeing the late 90's races, and seeing races now, there are some things that could have stayed, and things were changed that needed to be changed. Now, i feel like nascar is onto something with making the cars as equal as possible, BECAUSE of the teams that dont have alot of money. And, these lower teams that had talented drivers, well, the talent is being able to be shown with these cars being equal. Its cool to see different drivers in the front. Refreshing, shoot, ams on sunday night, they were swapping the front positions all night, it was an awesome thing to see live, and they were boogying baby. But, at tracks that are not superspeedway style, open the engines back up to between 750 and 850 horsepower and keep the car shape and engine specs the same across the board. Itll have people needing handling adjustments again, you can have this while keeping the cars as equal as possible. We saw that in the 2013-2017 seasons. Some stuff has gotta come back though to keep the sport around. Inlove trying new tracks, going over seas to lemans, all the different things theyre trying there. Bit, some stuff didnt need to be messed with at all.

I would pose this question, are the cars being so similar eventually going to hurt the sport? When the superstars are gone because everyone is winning, how does that impact viewership?

  • @sevencorter
    @sevencorter Рік тому +1

The only question I have is why are stock cars not stock? That's for both asphalt and dirt. I thought the point of nascar was to showcase the cars at the dealership. I truly believe that competition is what kept cars getting better and better and since the 90s thats been missing from the automobile industry.

Great interview! I am new to watching your channel, fairly new to nascar(been about 10 years since I went to my first race in Phoenix , changed my world). Back in the nineties though, I went to my local track. Chris Ledoux actually borrowed our trailer for a stage. My uncle who sponsored a car, and a family friend Dirk Stephens was all there. I was in my early twenties, and was hauling the trailer, etc. so I didn’t get to see anything cool. Only thing I can say is, Chris LeDoux played on the trailer I brought. Lol! I love you Kenny, you make me feel good!

Mark Martin is my favorite driver. And I know that he doesn't want to complain about the current ///NASCAR product. But he just sat there and tore this new car apart. Sorry Mark, but don't apologize for being critical. Nascar has screwed this up so bad. They have eliminated every aspect of what has made Nascar great that it's not the same series anymore. And for that, Nascar needs to hear our voice. Because their current product is nothing more than a love child between IROC & IMSA.

I just wish the "Crown Jewel of stock car racing" actually still looked like the production/stock cars they get their name from. NASCAR is no longer a stock car series but a spec car series. I know this started before the Next Gen car but at least the previous generations sorta resembled a car you would see on the road.
