I still remember watching this in my living room, extremely nervous. Then I was jubilant. This video gives me the goosebumps every time I watch it. Those 3 weeks in Vancouver were amazing!
Vancouver...best winter games ever!!!!way better than Sochi!!!!!!!! Sochi is a big disappointment both politically and event result wise......Vancouver surpassed all expetations!!!!!!Im American and Canada is who I cheer for......stay classy canada!!!!
Forbes did a survey of the best winter Olympic games and Lillehammer Norway was by far the best---Calgary actually finished ahead of Vancouver (by quite a large margin) and also made a profit--Vancouver barely broke even
because Norway is a winter sports obscessed country--there isn't a town or villiage there that doesn't have a ski jump/ski facility etc etc---the organization/atmosphere in Lillehammer in 1994 was far and ahead of anything before or since (including Vancouver-which couldn't even get the torch ceremony right)
2:33 "The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing that the 21st Olympic Winter Games in 2010 are awarded to the city of Vancouver."
I missed the old times of watching 🇨🇦 Vancouver, Canada 2010 Winter Olympics🇨🇦 years ago. And also 🇰🇷Pyeongchang, South Korea 2018 Winter Olympics🇰🇷 as well.
i was at GM Place when it was announced! IT WAS DEAFENING! this is sooo awesome. The torched passed by my house and every thing cant wait for hockey and the opening ceremony.
omg i was screaming so loud when i heard vancouver won i mean knew i couldnt go their because its to far away from where i am but still happy that it was in canada
just like the memory of Vancouver after they lost the Stanley Cup final to Boston at home in 2011--their behavior in the streets after that was absolutely pathetic and embarrassing to all of Canada
I remember this day we were on vacation in Whistler when they made the announcement I was 9 years old and looked at my Dad and said are we going and he said yes and he kept his promise I can't believe exactly a year ago I was arriving in Canada for the Olympics it was one of the best weeks of my life I'll never forget it.
Awesome, I remember watching this on TV at like 8:30 in the morning when this was announced. I look forward to the next Canadian Olympics, the summer (in Toronto most likely) or the winter (pretty much anywhere else) one day in the next decade and a half.
Cant beleive this is already over. I remember being a little child watching this announcment! I woke up at 7am waiting for this and i rememeber crying after realizing what had happened. And 8 years later it was over one year ago! Hard to believe.
I was working at my first job out of high school, and everyone in the store stopped to listen to this on the radio. Even customers joined us. No one was doing anything, and then we all just went nuts.
i'm from the philippines and i remember this very well. i was so nervous that i couldn't watch it. i remember watching toronto lose in 2001. so i pretended i was asleep then my friend texted me that salzburg was already eliminated. then another text came vancouver has won the bid and immediately turn the tv on. my cousin-in-law in vancouver learned of vancouver's victory after i called her. time flies.
Nice job Vancouver. A fantastic Olympics. It could be the last time a winter or summer olympics are held in North America for awhile so i saviored every minute. Congrats on putting on a great olympics.
can't believe the games have come and gone. i remember not being able to watch this announcement as i was so nervous. i was curled up in bed that night here in the philippine then a friend texted me that vancouver won that's the only time i opened the TV and tune in to CNN and saw the celebrations.
I remember that day because I was living in West Seattle at the time and we had Xfinity at the same time. They went on to have the greatest comeback in Olympic history! Gold: Vancouver Silver: Pyeongchang in South Korea Bronze: Salzburg in Oesterreich Never forget that day and lot of memories of that day in 2003!
It really is amazing to think about how everything played out, or how things might have been different. If there was home snow for Alex Bilodeau, no home sheet for Kevin Martin, no home rink for Joannie Rochette, no home track for the speed skaters, no home ice for Sid in OT. Who knows what might have happened to all that if it wasn't at home? ........ But it WAS!!! And it was all historic!
yes but. I volunteer at Canada games in New brunswick in february 2003 and I met Sidney Crosby and I knew he will be the future great deal in hockey. He was the sensation of the games before they started. Your correct we were celebrating canada one day before.
My god, do they know how to build up anticipation! The city pride after that must've been at astronomical levels. I was in NYC the day they lost 2012 to London, and the entire place seemed deflated.
No one in the crowd that day would have expected that these games were going to be the best one, ever, and no one there heard of Sidney Crosby. If I remember correctly, we just celebrated Canada Day a day before.
I think the moment the announcement was made the first thing people were thinking of was, who was going to light the torch. For me only one answer came to mind and that was Wayne Gretzky. And sure enough it was.
It always felt like 2010 would be in a far distant future and now here it is. Also, I wonder what the heck I was doing on July 2, 2003 at 8:41am? I live in Vancouver but at that time I wasn't much into the Olympic spirit until now.
when the olympic bid announcement eclipsed the oscar for best picture. now, the ioc just decides behind closed doors where they wanna spend their winter & summer vacations. boo.
Toronto i'm sure is preparing itself for another run at the Summer Olympics. if they are successful in hosting the 2015 Panams they are well in position to win either 2024 or 2028.
@Motigflames Calgary just hosted the games in 88 though so it is ruled out. Quebec is the only place in Canada that is suitable and hasn't hosted yet, although Montreal did host a Summer Games.
@scorpioninpink Half were in Andorra, the luge track in France some mountain events/hockey in Jaca, Spain which also bid for the 2014 Olympics. The plan was too spread out for them to win. Besides Andorra has never won an Olympic medal, which means the IOC is extremely unlikely to award them the games.
Quebec City will be the next Winter bid for Canada but they really need to fine tune their bid. Sans the bribery scandal during the 2002 bid Quebec City finished last in the voting and its reported that their bid had lots of problems.
Oh gee, years goes by like lightning... I already misses it. But I'm pretty sure it won't be coming back to Canada for a while. I think they have to go all around the globe. And it kinda pisses me off about Toronto only rooting for summer olympics... Idk if that's true. But yes it's going to be Quebec city or Toronto.
The opening and ceremonies were bland, but the action in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games was very exciting. Both the United States and Canada did really well. The United States broke Germany's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most total medals in a single Winter Olympics with 37. Canada broke Norway's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most gold medals in a single Winter Olympics with 14. Germany and Norway did well. Russia? Disappointing.
2021 now. Still the greatest Olympics ever. I'll check back in another decade
Best Winter Olympics for sure. Best Summer games will always be Sydney 2000.
I still remember watching this in my living room, extremely nervous. Then I was jubilant. This video gives me the goosebumps every time I watch it. Those 3 weeks in Vancouver were amazing!
This still gives me chills even when i watch it 8 years later..
"The Games are coming back to Canada!"
And CTV kept your network from broadcasting them.
Thanks Harper
Vancouver...best winter games ever!!!!way better than Sochi!!!!!!!! Sochi is a big disappointment both politically and event result wise......Vancouver surpassed all expetations!!!!!!Im American and Canada is who I cheer for......stay classy canada!!!!

Well sorry to disappoint you but for all the younger foes like me who weren't alive for those Olympic Games, Vancouver is the best one in my lifetime
david graham And why Lillehammer? Tonya Harding vs. Nancy Kerrigan, that's why (though in the end, Oksana Baiul outskated them all)!
Even way better than that stupid fifa world cup.
It's worthless
because Norway is a winter sports obscessed country--there isn't a town or villiage there that doesn't have a ski jump/ski facility etc etc---the organization/atmosphere in Lillehammer in 1994 was far and ahead of anything before or since (including Vancouver-which couldn't even get the torch ceremony right)
I just teared up a little bit watching this.
So proud to be Canadian!
I was there with my 2 kids. Just watched the video again and I still have the chills.
I remember sitting in GM Place waiting for that announcement.....
All eyes in Canada and across the rest of the world are on Vancouver and Canada, make us proud Vancouver!
From, Ottawa
I love you, Vancouver!
Truly a great day to be a Canadian.
im korean and i remember that i was almost crying at that time but!it was really nice olympic:) i miss canada
I was there at Rogers Arena (then GM Place) for the announcment. Boy does it still have goosebumps on me. Lots of great memories.
Great job, Vancouver! I'm from Toronto and I was disappointed we lost the bid for 2008 but at least it came back to Canada. :)
But Toronto However won the bid for the Pan Am Games in 2015 at least still enjoyed it
i've never been so proud to be a Vancouverite before. What a moment!
Still emotional watching this! Vancouver 2010 did Canada proud in every way.
2:33 "The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing that the 21st Olympic Winter Games in 2010 are awarded to the city of Vancouver."

Pyeongchang went on to grab the 2018 Winter Olympics.
As a proud Bostonian, I hope to hear this same announcement in two years time. Vancouver did a wonderful job hosting the 2010 Olympics.
More than Sochi, and Vancouver is a beautiful city that can bring you a good memory
just like the memory of Vancouver after they lost the Stanley Cup final to Boston at home in 2011--their behavior in the streets after that was absolutely pathetic and embarrassing to all of Canada
@@bufnyfan1yes because a group of 200-300 "Fans" Makes a whole fa base/city & country look bad. Thinking that is just pathetic

Scratch that
Best Moment in Canadian History.
i remember screaming and waking up the rest of the house while watching this. still gives me chills. only month and a half away!!!!!!
i remember this like it was yesterday. this was better than the actual games themselves.
I was working at my first job out of high school, and everyone in the store stopped to listen to this on the radio. Even customers joined us. No one was doing anything, and then we all just went nuts.

Québec 2022!! Support!!
Beijing won tho :/
Nice job Vancouver. A fantastic Olympics. It could be the last time a winter or summer olympics are held in North America for awhile so i saviored every minute. Congrats on putting on a great olympics.

I still get chills watching this :)
Damn, makes me wish I still lived there.
#BBCSPORTS LOUDEST CROWD VANCOUVER 🇨🇦
Its heart warming. :)

this was the bid announcement i couldn't bear watch as i was so nervous.
Vancouver 2030 olympic bid 2023 win 🇨🇦
I can't believe this happened six and a half years ago, and the actual thing is just a mere one and a half days away!
it sad and hard to believe its already over lets hope quebec city or toronto gets one in the 2020's
My god, do they know how to build up anticipation!
The city pride after that must've been at astronomical levels. I was in NYC the day they lost 2012 to London, and the entire place seemed deflated.
The GM Place, where all Vancouverites celebrated, would hold the ice hockey tournaments of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
I LOVE THIS COUNTRY! What a moment! :)
평창의 올림픽 유치의 실패의 첫번째쓴맛을 보여주었지 ... 마음아프다 :(
So sad..

wow I remember this like it was yesturday.
@silexent Definitely. RIP Jack Poole, you will most certainly be missed.
july 2 2003 the 1 year anniversary of my fathers passing.....
not only Norway's mark of 13 gold in SLC but also the Soviet's mark of 13 from Innsbruck 1976.
Vancouver is so far the largest city to have host the Winter Olympics.
I think the moment the announcement was made the first thing people were thinking of was, who was going to light the torch. For me only one answer came to mind and that was Wayne Gretzky. And sure enough it was.
Quality over quantity buddy!
Note about Sarajevo from Jacques Rogge...
Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics.
The Voice of Peter Mansbridge.

@scorpioninpink yes it did lol, with venues in Spain and France.
YAY!
@beastlyshins
I don't think CBC could have done what CTV and their consortium did for the games. The coverage was amazing and unprecedented.

@Motigflames Calgary just hosted the games in 88 though so it is ruled out. Quebec is the only place in Canada that is suitable and hasn't hosted yet, although Montreal did host a Summer Games.
If anybody requires a cure for insomnia just listen to Jacques Rogge talk and you'll be fine.
Yup Quebec would be the next place in Canada to host.
I am proud to be canadian
I hope Toronto gets the 2024 games (:
how do you get the olympics to choose a city

Whos hoping for round 2 in 2030??
lol look how happy vancouver is.
@BostonCreamDonut Might wanna watch your facts there. We had THREE runs at the Cup: 1982, 1994, and 2011. ;)
well PyongChang ended up okay they got the 2018 games... I dont know if Prague would have made a good host of anything LOL
No the 2020 Olympics will be held by Madrid, Istanbul, or Tokyo. We find out in September, 2013.
The opening and ceremonies were bland, but the action in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games was very exciting.
