The difference between French and Italian bread.
In the first place. the thing you bought is about as French or Italian as a hot dog. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I too have resorted to buying it in a pinch.
French bread as made in France is a protected commodity. And there are very strict rules on the ingredients as well as how long it has to rest after baking before you can sell it.
In France to be called French bread the ingredients are water, flour yeast, and salt. And that's it. No more, no less. Italian bread on the other hand can have other ingredients added such as sugar or olive oil etc.
In terms of shape. French bread such as a baguette is more rounded. Italian bread can be flatter.
The crumb on French bread is dryer. Italian bread is moister to sop up all the oils and sauces.
    Hope that helps.

  • @cookingwithjackshow

Alelip1000 I've had many 1st generation Italian-American friends tell me that there is a huge difference between the authentic European Italian cuisine their immigrant mothers cooked up and "authentic" American-Italian cuisine. And that one is NOT like the other. I've also had friends and relatives who were stationed/tourists in Italy who made the same claim. My Italian cookbooks reinforce the claim.

I call a Walmart tissue Kleenex
    I call a generic swab a Q-tip
and I call a canon photocopy machine a xerox.
and yet life still goes on. :-)

I just discovered your videos. Shiny! The Americanized versions of French and Italian bread are overly similar. Technically, the Italian dough contains much more liquid, is not steamed in the oven but dry baked, is often rounder and flatter (like artisan bread), may contain more ingredients (fat, milk, sweetener), may use semolina flour, and is unlikely to contain the rye traditional French breads can. However, there is likely little difference in how they are made in the average supermarket bakery here. I believe there are oddly strict governmental controls as to what constitutes "French" bread here (like how the French won't let their people make up any new words), so adding anything extra may just give it the Italian label--or maybe using both labels just lets bakers sell more bread. Like Italian pizza, I doubt the average American would recognize true Italian bread.

a lot of people have made it this way. My mom did it this way because it was inexpensive and delicious. $3 for the english muffins and $3 for the sauce. 12 little pizzas.

French Bread has a pan of water put in the oven to give the bread more shine and chew. Italian bread is cooked without the pan of water and usually has a duller and crunchier crust. This is what I understand from working in a hot bakery.
