Martin shone as a great instrumental composer in particular with works like this one, which combine the subtle detail of a concertante (or even chamber) work with the amplitude of a full orchestra. The various Ballades for solo instrument and piano or orchestra, the Petite Symphonie Concertante for piano, harpsichord and harp soloists and double string orchestra, the Trois Danses for oboe, harp, string quintet and strings, Polyptyque for violin solo and two string orchestras... these are only some of the masterpieces he gave us!
My first Frank Martin work, 8 preludes for piano, was given to me was given to me. What a great introduction to the music of this great Swiss composer!
Frank Martin’s “Concerto for seven wind instruments, timpani, percussion, and string orchestra is a real romp! I particularly like the 3rd movement, starting at 14.26 on the video. It is cool to put these winds in front of a string orchestra, backed by percussionists. Fascinating and skillful writing and virtuoso playing!
16:50 timpani solo
