What an absolutely spectacular performance of this masterpiece. This choir is simply phenomenal! Tuning perfection, sublime sound, warm, glorious, rich and clear sound! The sopranos bring incredible warmth and clarity. And ATB are all equally beautiful and powerful. The phrasing, the musical shapes, the beautiful vowels, the tight ensemble, all perfection. The expert musicality and musical insight of Mr. Dijkstra make this a truly deeply spiritual and powerfully moving performance.

The best performance of this masterpiece i experienced was decades ago, same choir but of course different singers. NKK was in that time one of the top choirs in the world. Especially the bass singers gave this choir an unique balance in color of sound.

I have just come across this glorious music. I think my words of praise for both music and performance can add little to all the glowing comments below. Listening to this Mass was an enriching experience.

Here it is Good Friday 2021 and we are still with this pandemic. This piece is perfect for a night such as this. Frank Martin has crafted this beautiful music with not only his amazing musical skill, but also with a deep connection to his spirituality. The final movement is so haunting with its final plea, Donna Nobis Pacem.

    Wow, wow, wow.
Wow for a beautiful composistion, from a choir music lover.
Wow for a touching rendition, I get goose bumps, from a former choir singer.
Wow for an excellent recording, from somebody who did live choir recordings by himself.
And sad, that I cannot share this link anymore with my late father, a choir singer and conductor.

Considering the fact that this is a recording of a live (and NOT a recording-studio) performance, it is truely stunning ... In the Kyrie, there are some audible flaws, no doubt caused by the nervosity of singers in the face of such a demanding and monumental masterpiece and the urge to do it proper justice ... In fact, this is a most unusual piece of music: Frank Martin (an utterly Calvinist musician, befitting his Swiss origins) kept it in his drawer for decades until a friend convinced him to publish this masterpiece which currently is probably the most often performed of all his works ... There are obvious parallels to Bach´s latin "Hohe Messe", the ultimate tribute to a fundamentally catholic form of musical art by a profoundly Lutheran musician ...

Stunning performance. The choir shows amazing focus and unity. It probably helps that they actually watch the conductor, something even pro choruses don't always do. But the pitch was perfect all around, as was the pronunciation (to my ear), the blend, the shaping of phrases, everything.
And I have to say, that's about the best audience I've ever seen. They are enraptured throughout, every single one. The gorgeous piece and the superb performance help of course, but when I watch concerts it always seems like there's one or two people who aren't caught up with the music, no matter how good it is. But not here. Are they musicians themselves?
And I'm curious about the venue. Is it even a concert hall? It looks like the lobby to a concert hall, but it has the reverb of a cathedral. Was the reverb added in post-production? (I can keep a secret!)
Bravo, singers! I'll have to pull out my Dale Warland version to compare.

Thank you for the kind words! As to the location, this was recorded in the Jacobijnerkerk (Jacobin Church) in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. When the choir performs there, we usually stand below the organ balcony to make the best use of the special acoustics in the church.

The recording shows an extraordinarily professional precision. But listen to the sound: after 10 minutes, one gets saturated with the overly bright vocal production, sopranos in the higher register sound like laser beams, the basses are overly lightened to the point that the lower notes don't speak at all. Dijkstra is a wonderful craftsman, but there is clearly no poetry, no subtlety at all in his craft. Simple example: Martin was a deeply spiritual man. Think of that and just listen to the Kyrie of this recording: is it a profound plea for mercy coming from the bottom of the composer's soul or a sequence of chords with dynamics attached that have to be sorted out and tuned properly? There is a reason why here in Sweden the Swedish Radio Choir got so tired of Peter...

    • @NederlandsKamerkoor
      @NederlandsKamerkoor  4 роки тому +9

Sorry to hear that you're not enjoying this performance as much as we are! Of course, musical taste is personal, although there seems to be a small misunderstanding: our colleagues at the Swedish Radio Choir have honoured Peter Dijkstra by naming him their Conductor Laureate as of 2019, so they must be the opposite of tired! In the meanwhile, we are looking journeying forward in choral music of all times, with Peter as our chief conductor for 5 more years .
