- Kirby's Return To Dreamland Deluxe is releasing soon and with that being said, we're starting off the year with a Nintendo 3DS retrospective once again! This retrospective will go over the final first party game released for the system being Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, a game which released a WHOPPING 8 YEARS after the Nintendo 3DS launched in 2019. The Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story remake was a disaster, and that game only came two months prior. Another aspect is this game is CRAZY expensive even used. Even worse considering the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop are shutting down. But it's worth it just for you. So how does this Kirby remaster hold up?

Luigi's Mansion on 3DS made sense because the Gamecube was originally supposed to have stereoscopic 3D, so the vision for the title was finally realized.
I think Switch would've been ideal, but that is very true

@@SagyTity1i think someone higher up at nintendo purposely made someone develop it for 3ds and not allowed them to put it on switch just because they really wanted to fulfil the original vision of the game, and for some reason they decided to do it so late into the 3ds’s lifespan. i don’t think it was ever going to be for switch even if they had the chance.
Back at the beginning of 2022 I found this game at Target in the clearance section for $11.99, that was one of the best gaming finds I’ve ever had.
Wow that’s lucky. I almost picked it up at a toys r us in 2020 but decided I’d come back to it in a week if I still wanted it. Them the lock down happened and now it’s 200$ 😭😭
This was not lucky, it was the base Price, after it was sold cheaper because of overproducing. Now every idiot goes crazy and try to push the price into the sky. I got the Game too for 15€ and at the time i bought it, ebay was full of new copies for that price.

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn and other 3DS remakes that would've been preferable on the Switch are a reminder that sometimes, market trends and preferences are much better than traditionalism.

The 3DS post-switch deserved so much better. Like it was still doing well and they should’ve made some original games for it as Warioware gold was the last original non-remake first party game for the system….

well originally it wasn't a Kirby game, it would have been a prince Fluff game but at one point in development Nintendo told Good Feel to make it a Kirby game (i assume because they wanted a wider audiance)

It's actually good but the problem is that it tries to make epic yarn a more return to dream land style. Which means power ups and a special mode with health bar

With Dark Moon getting a Switch upgrade it makes the 3DS Luigi’s Mansion release hurt even more.
The original Luigi’s mansion was supposed to have 3D but it was cut. So that makes me feel better about the remake.

Yikes. 200 dollars. That’s insane, and for a gimped port too? Yeah so the new copy abilities feel forced and make the game easier, and the new Devilish Mode seems sound until you meet the enemy that annoys you and removes the music. (One of the best OSTs in the franchise.) And the visuals aren’t as strong, and the sub games are ok at best. Yeah, so much for being an extra epic version of the best Kirby spinoff…

Watch "Hotel Mario Deluxe" releasing on 3DS after the death of the e-shop, making this video totally outdated because that wouldn't be about the last 1st party game on system anymore. 🙃
While I prefer the original Wii version more (bc it's the only one I have), some features in the 3DS remake fix the lack of content and provide more variety. It runs half the framerate (30fps) instead of the original 60, so that's a pass for me.
One thing I'll never forget was the discourse surrounding the 3DS how so many wanted Nintendo to stop making games for it and focus on the Switch, and loads of people screaming that the handheld doesn't need to die. DreamcastGuy and AntDude getting all that flack because they wanted the 3DS to die, it was an old system, it had it's day and it was time to move on. They were right, nobody was buying 3DS games after the Switch released. Both Mario and Luigi remakes? Flopped. Metroid Samus Returns? Flopped. Luigi's Mansion? Flopped. Mario Party: The Top 100? Flopped. WarioWare: Gold? Flopped. Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn? It flopped too. It was getting annoying seeing more 3DS games get announced in Directs. It's for that reason when the successor to the Switch comes out, I want all first party support to cease on Switch so it's not going to hold back the new system.
Onto the game itself, it's fine, but it's not so extra epic. The Ravel abilities are fun, but this game was never designed with those abilities in mind and they really ruin the whole point of the game. That Devilish Mode though is one of the most asinine things I've seen put in a game. This is not a hard mode, Devilish Mode is pure frustration. I watched a live steam of Meteorz on the final boss and he lost so quite a few times because of that Devil. It's not a fun mode by any stretch of the imagination. If this game got a Switch release, I would remove the Devilish Mode, keep the Ravel abilities but have the option to turn them on and off, flesh out the two mini-games, reintroduce co-op, and add a new story campaign.
But welcome back to the driver's seat, buddy! Enjoyed the video, and how you tore into Devilish Mode made the wait for this all the more epic! I can't believe how much this game is being sold for now.
All thanks to you for helping! Thanks for doing an analysis of it as well when I was revising the script. At this rate, probably best just to remake it from scratch for the Switch.

You can add funds by linking your Nintendo Network ID to your Nintendo Account ID and can either Redeem cards or use something like Paypal through the website's version of the eShop. You don't have to fork out for insanely priced Physical games until the support goes down in March.

This is why Demeech is a true nintendo fan. Looking back on Nintendo's history and hoping for the best when a new game launches while being optimistic and aware of Nintendo's misfires. It pays to be prepared for the worst.
I feel like your criticism of Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn not Using the 3d Feature is a bit of a nitpick, given that the 3d feature can be regarded as a gimmick and would probably make sense to be cut if this game was rushed out after The Failure of Bowser's Inside Story, but I can see where most of your viewpoints are coming from. An entire game with the Angry Sun would probably be not one i'd want to play, after all.

Kirby is made by Hal Labratories which is a first party nintendo studio which also made Super Smash Bros

This was a pretty mediocre port just to have something new for the 3ds in 2019,but at least you couldn't play Kirby's epic yarn on the console before this port,unlike Mario and Luigi Boswer inside story+Boswer jr journey
Thank god I ordered this on Amazon back in 2020.

I would've been okay with the addition of ravel abilities if it was an optional mode. The fact that there's no option to turn them off and play the game as it originally was on Wii messes with the core game design. The lack of 3D or any New 3DS enhancements (like a more stable framerate) is just dumb. I think the Wii version is better overall. I know some people may find the game more fun with the ravel abilities and that's fine, but the way they break the intended game design combined with the inferior visual presentation makes this a no-go for me.
What's even weirder is that just 2 years prior, Yoshi's Woolly World, a much more graphically complex game for the Wii U from the same developers, got a 3DS port. That version made little sacrifice to the game's visual presentation and took advantage of the New 3DS to preserve the 60fps framerate, all while supporting 3D. On top of that, most of the gameplay additions were optional side modes and the one minor change made to the main gameplay was relegated to easy mode only. They also replaced the no longer functional Miiverse functionality with some customisation features. None of these additions mess with the core game design like ravel abilities do.
Because of these changes, which version is superior is a topic that continues to be debated. There's really no right answer because the Wii U version still wins in graphics (and by extension, visual presentation) and has local multiplayer, but the fact that it's not the definitive version in terms of content and the 3DS version can be argued to be superior one because of that is a testament to how great of a port it is. The 3DS port of Kirby's Epic Yarn doesn't really impress in comparison. The gameplay changes may be fun to some, but it's pretty clear the Wii version is the more definitive experience.
It's so stupid because this Kirby Game was sold by alot amount of copies under 15€ in Europe. Noone wanted it because most already had one. I wonder who pushed this price that high, because it's actually really not rare.
You can get this copy, complete in box, for $90-100 these days.
Next time, get a used copy that at least sets you back at 30$ or less.

Good review of the game itself, though I don't agree with your take on how the games you mentioned in the video should have been Switch games. The 3DS has been one of my favorite consoles of all time and I'm glad it got the support it did. Mind you I say that as someone who also owns a Switch. The 3DS just has a higher level of portability that's not matched even by the Switch Lite.
Also, at the time of this video it was still possible to add funds to your account for the purposes of buying digital 3DS games. You just couldn't add funds via the eShop app on the console itself, however you were still able to do it through your account on Nintendo's website as long as you had it linked to your 3DS.

As a passionate kirby fan I have a lot to say about this game but first and for most this game does not worth the price of 200$ is the same philosophy mine of refusing to get og hardware and software from their og platform is too expansive for me that at this point what's the point.
I think as a game is very unecesarry and should have been on the switch due to mutiple factors and while not unecesarry as the remake of bowser inside story since the 3ds could play the og with no issues that not get free pass either.
Gameplay is really solid and keep most of epic yarn's gameplay one on one, the lack of co op feel a bit not ok if you ask me consider the 3DS is capable for doing that, and the abilities though while cool in concept the level design don't work in them in mind and is kinda how I imagine if you put copy abilities in kirby's dreamland, the lack of side stuff to do with the abilities such as puzzles, boss rushes and mid bosses to challenge your path kinda make it too easy to an extent and the lack of the option to drop them like in any other mainline kirby games is pretty bother me to be honest, as for the transformations while some work like before some of them should have used the 3DS' technology like the train and firetruck with to manage their abilities with the touch screen.
Devlish mode sucks thought the level design don't work with those devils in mind and then they become a setious neusance especially the heart devil is basically like plop the angry sun to new super mario bros ds on levels that don't work with this enemy in mind if they just add the life bar and give let's say 3 hits I could see it as a decent hard mode.
I think the presentation of the game look good but is feel pretty flat consider the main selling point of the game is the presentation on a hardware that weaker than the og kinda damage it in the long run immersion wise.
The sub game are intresting to say the least not really call them the best sub games in the kirby series but is far from the worst though I do wish some incarnation of the idea of slash and bead would show up in the next 3D kirby game.
If you ask me what is the most pointless part in the remake is the street pass sharing coniser how late it was into the 3DS' life.
Overall I think is servicable but unless you want to play epic yarn on the go or you really don't want to play the game with motion controls or a dpad there no reason to play the game when the og is an option, if you ask the placement it get the rank of middle B tier compare to the OG's mid high B tier while the stuff that was here is nice and all it did some stuff backward in the end of the day

Something you didn't mention is that this version removes the ability to play co-op. Like, I get it, this is on a handheld system, so single-player would be prioritized, but removing the option entirely? It's not like the 3DS can't do co-op multiplayer; New Super Mario Bros. 2 has it, after all. I'll be sticking to the Wii version of Kirby's Epic Yarn primarily for this reason

Not everyone plays the game for highest ranking so it is extremely easy as you cant due.

I imagine that even with the Switch successor coming in the next 12-18 months, Nintendo will be releasing a bunch of remakes/remasters/ cheap games that are designed for OG Switch for at least a year after that drops. The difference being that *should* work on the new machine.
Unless Nintendo ditch NVIDIA for a cluster of Cell processors or go back to dual screens.
