I remember you saying previously all px's are now be checked before making an offer - Jason chasing a sale 🤣 Interestingly, quite a few dealers in my area are now telling buyers to take their px's to WBAC or similar. I suspect they want them to break the bad news of their px trade value.
Any car that comes in with ditch finders on there needs taking a closer look at. If they cut corners on tyres and they are the only thing keeping you in a straight line, they’ll bodge everything else. Looks like the typical can just about afford a half decent car, but couldn’t afford the maintenance.
I've got a trade in .....for a Focus it's in pristine condition ( may require a "touch in") 167k miles but it's worth £6000 when should I bring it down to collect my payment?😂
That’s actually not that unusual. ‘Subject to inspection’. It’s a tricky area to be in because it sets expectations with the customer. Pulling back money for undisclosed issues/defects should have been the way forward from there. Mismatched Chinese there’s on the same axle would have set off alarm bells with me.
Water ingress on those. Sits in the sills on both rear sides. Easy to fix. Go under each rear sill and remove rubber plugs to drain. Basically water sits in and if left will overflow into the car. I agree though out to trade.
A mate of mine who sold cars for many years people would come in do a deal, and agree on the price they would return to pick up their new car bring in their present motor, having changed the tyres and removed various things.
The high pressure fuel pump is driven by the timing chain, which is at the back of the engine, realistically it is engine out to replace it and when you're in there the chain must be replaced, you could easily spend 600 to 1000quid depending on where the parts are bought....
I recently bought a 2010 Renault Clio mk3 for my daughter as her first car. I spent an hour checking it from bumper to bumper, including underneath and then a half hour test drive. Can’t believe someone in the trade would take in a car without checking it first! If I’d seen that Bimmer, I’d have walked away as it obviously hasn’t been looked after. Cheap tyres on a BMW are a sure giveaway that the owner has skimped on other ares like maintenance
Good call to move it on. It's my experience those roofs tend to leak quite badly as they get older - and none on the roof specialist will touch them. A retail nightmare in the making...
Roof just needs readjusting or rubbers replaced if leaking. The roof has 2 gas struts which also fail and are easy to change which is another common fault they get.
That customer knew exactly what he was doing, I have looked at a car without my car previously, had an estimated value and left a refundable deposit so that both parties can pull out of the deal does not suit when the p/x is valued. Unfortunately its a always a risk when taking in p/x, even your mechanic would not have picked up on the fuel rail issue from a drive. SOP in place to get all p/x driven by a mechanic is the way forward but how will that work on sats.
Place I worked at, you'd hand the customers keys to managment for appraisal, he'd come back with a figure, he'd check it out while you were doing the test drive with the customer, how cars are these days having a quick walkaround with glasses guide and giving a price have gone.
A lot of BMW (and Mercs/Audi's ) are getting their DPFs internals removed and coded out. Illegal of course but if I was in the trade I'd be very careful checking a diesel, the cost of reinstating a DPF and associated equipment would blow any profit. The tuners carrying out this stipulate for off road use only (haha) should be illegal to do this sort of thing!
These are not worth selling the N47 engine timing chain problems can appear at any time and then its a huge bill, no way you can tell when its going to fail and its an engine out repair. Still very sought after models being the LCi. Suspension shocks/struts on e92/93 is hard. Some folk can’t acclimatise to “the firm ride”. Worse with run-flats, especially Bridgestone Potenza RTF OEM tyres. Should’ve had air filter. As airflow measurements and fuel pressures are compared as part of the parameters checked on the fault code generated. Also exhaust pressure before and after turbo and DPF. A lot can be learned by watch live data whilst car driven. I’m sure it’ll be a good project for someone as prices have dropped heavy but not those with n57 engine though. May even be a qood breaker at the price it owes. Happy days… easy come! 🫣 That’s enough dribble from me, lm away to sleep currently the middle of the night for me.
Hi Joe. I think this Car wasn't checked properly because the Seller was upgrading to a better BMW while trading in a BMW. I'm not sure, but it is worth looking into, Joe. 😢. Evening Fella, is this not a case of people buying devices to clear codes etc before they turn up at yours then doing the same when they come to collect what they bought?
if it was me and he brought it in and i saw the damage i would of said it's worth £2000. So if you don't accept it the deal is off the table. Then i know he would accept it or be back the next day.
Some unscrupulous dealer will just clear the engine management light and sell it as a good car, hoping that customers do not do a full and proper test drive. So easily to be caught out if you are buying cars like this
I’m amazed that you assume everyone trading in a car, especially an old shitter like that, is getting rid of it because they just fancy a change, most people don’t change cars until the old one starts costing them big money, or they get a warning that big expenditure is coming. Unless you’re putting trade-ins straight to auction, where cosmetic condition/appearance is the most important factor, you need to assume anything you get offered is going to have issues and price accordingly…
Your mechanic should have checked the fuel rail pressure in the live data on a test drive, It could have been a simple fuel rail pressure sensor. OBD11 don't do Mercedes, disappointing.

Not that anyone here is interested but we have the same car, same interior, same white colour but fitted with the 3ltr 6 cylinder petrol engine. It's been with us for 7 years and it's never put a foot wrong. It's a car which is aging very gracefully and somehow still looks the part.
