  • In today's video, we take a look at what's going on with the Land Rover market. They haven't been far from news this year, from a theft crisis, insurance issues, flooded dealerships and now the values tanking drastically. I give you my dealer insight into what's caused all of this, and how things might end up for the premium British marque.

Land Rover thefts featured heavily on Traffic Cops 4/12/23 - Derby cops stated 5 or 6 cars being taken every night. When it’s stated so heavily on mainstream TV, watched by millions, it’s almost a certainty the public will walk away from the brand.

Agreed! They got greedy and unnecessarily messed with a winning formula.
The delineation between RR and LR, the roles they filled, and who each set of customers were was not only very clear but also, because of their abilities, common knowledge across the world. And despite crap reliability they still hold an almost mythic reputation.
Now however, LR are a luxury item with a premium price just like RR. And all those life-long/repeat Land Rover customers now drive a Japanese or Korean 4x4

I saw an auction up north, well away from the Smoke, and all the JLR vehicles were not even getting a bid on 3-4k under cap clean and therefore going unsold. Figures from car dealer magazine etc is like MSM, full of bullshit. Any buyer with a brain will wait until well into next year. It ain’t the insurance you have to worry about with these vehicles, it’s the running costs, breakdowns!

I gather from your report you’ve never owned a RR, I’ve had several over the years and can honestly say I have never broken down with any of them not even a puncher, there’s so much bullshit said about these vehicles, they can be expensive to repair but in many cases it’s the owner not the vehicle, they neglect the maintenance and rant on about how bad they are probably because of LR dealers horrendous prices for spares and labour costs, keep away from main agents like I do and things aren’t that bad or if your capable do your own repairs and servicing, buying aftermarket spares of the internet is a good place to get parts at a fraction of LR prices,I have a LR specialist near me who’s great and has all the latest diagnostic software and most of the time it’s just a matter of plugging it in to find the fault if they occur, they are a very technological vehicle with all the systems to them and a simple sensor can cause all sorts of problems when they fail. People expect to run these vehicles on a shoestring and buy worn out lumps of shit and find themselves with all sorts of problems because of lack of maintenance previously, they are a luxury vehicle and can cost a lot of money if you don’t know what your doing, their capable of mega mileages if looked after and driven properly, some idiots drive them like sports cars and then winge when things go wrong.

As Land Rover prices fall people like myself will just hang on to our vehicles instead of trading them in. I’ve had a Discovery Sport from new for 5 years and now has only 37,000 miles on the clock. The trade in values would pay for a deposit and 12 months of payments. No incentive to trade it in for a new one. I’ve disabled the keyless entry. Lovely car to drive. But this means that Land Rover won’t be selling new cars to past customers.

The argument about only 2 insurance companies providing cover seems to be yesterday's news. In fact, insurance premiums have started to come off significantly and particularly as a spread over other comparable large SUVs (e.g. Q7 and X5). That's why I bought a used RR last week after watching prices fall for a long time as the insurance premium finally came to £2300 vs £1500 for a used Q7 (Greater London area). This and the JLR security update should start to support the market. Having said that, if all used car prices fall it might not be enough.

    VEHICLE SCORE suggestion
Hi not related to this article but you seem to have the ear of Vehicle Score. A possible suggestion to make the score more accurate. My current car has a mileage discrepancy due to an MOT retake where the mileage was put in incorrectly by 1 mile by the tester. This is noted on Vehicle Score and I guess penalised as clocked. Maybe their system could be adjusted to allow a mileage variant of say 10 miles before flagging to take this into consideration as it must be a common error on many cars and therefore highlight a score that misrepresents the cars history. Best wishes

I've had my 2010 v6 HSE Range Rover for 3 years it's done 92000 miles, I change the oil regularly I've changed the usual disc brakes and pads, had a new alternator, had no more problems than any other car I've owned. It had an MOT this week had a clean pass no advisories I even had to walk up to the front of the car whilst it was in the MOT station to realise the diesel engine was still running as it was so quiet.

The problem with these vehicles status symbol Land Rover shows that you are successful ? Punters will still buy them but not as many 🤣 my wife work colleague just became millionaire on the lottery just bought today Range Rover Sport SVR all the bells and whistles I don’t think he will be worried about the maintenance and insurance.
For the average punter these vehicles will be out of there reach.
Like with most problems it will probably settle down after a year or so but many sellers will catch a cold.
It isn’t just Land Rover ? Millions of people seeing massive hike insurance over the last 6 month it partially due to excessive body and repair cost and theft.

With used prices of Land Rovers dropping there’s never been a better time to buy one if that’s what your after, insurance costs are high but what a car for the money, the diesel V8s in both 3-6 and 4-4 are brilliant performers and not that bad on fuel in not driven hard, driven sensibly on the motorway mine always gave over 30mpg which for that sort of luxury vehicle isn’t bad at all,my daughter has a 3litre V6 diesel Velar and on a recent trip to the outskirts of London averaged nearly 40mpg on the round trip from Manchester. The weather conditions were awful with wind and rain in both directions. I had a Range Rover Sport 3-6 tdv8 for about 4years with very little trouble,it had done 120,000 before I bought it and sold it around 180,000 miles, what a super vehicle that was, before that I had a Discovery 3 2-7 tdv6, great vehicle but needed a bit more push than 190bhp.

I do understand the dealer reluctance to reduce prices, but at some point they will have to move stock, as the holding costs ramp up.
Individuals who can’t get insurance will HAVE to sell, unless they SORN (in which case the vehicle will be off the road and uninsured, and still liable to theft).
Those that are sold will be a clear barometer, just as house prices and the gulf between asking prices and sale price, when volumes dry up.

Surely the simple practice of putting your car key in a faraday pouch every night would combat the ‘arial dancers’ as there would be no signal for them to intercept. I have a high end BMW and I put the key in a faraday pouch religiously as soon as I enter the house then hide the key. It cost me less than £10 for two pouches and I’ve walked right up to my car with the key in the pouch and tried to open the doors and the car remains locked. Yes, thieves could break into your house for the keys but surly if they couldn’t access your vehicle from outside the house then they’d try and find an easier target 🤔

I live 420 miles from London on a low car crime area so it’s nothing to do with the car etc it’s all about insurance companies ripping people off. I eventually got LR insurance for just over £800. I don’t think I’m alone in saying jlr need to fix this problem!!! Another thing I find unbelievable is that people are still using keyless entry when unless you live under a rock would know about cars being stolen so easily!!! Yes its a nice thing to have but I doubt not having keyless entry is a deal breaker??
