Goosebumps several times on this……never heard this before. I’ve read that Marillion was hugely successful in Britain, but they never reached the top heights in the US. But this is every bit the caliber of Genesis and Yes. I LOVE Steve Hogarth’s voice….SO emotive.! Wonderful suggestion! You have the BEST subs, Brandon! 😁

Thankfully, they have garnered an international dedicated fandom that supports them! Some of their latest albums are absolutely phenomenal; "Marbles" being possibly their magnum opus, but "Somewhere Else" and "FEAR" are superb as well. If you're new to Marillion I would definitely recommend either "Seasons End" or "Somewhere Else" as starting points, they're more easily listened to.

One of their best tracks, an epic climax to an extraordinary album, check out the opening two tracks which Segway: The Bridge/Living with big lie, amazing opening to the album. Also the first two tracks of "Seasons End": The king of Sunset town & Easter, beautiful, powerful & majestic! Cheers

This couldn't be more timely because I have been still feeling terrific, having seen Marillion live for the first time in my life, after being a fan of 38 years. I was in Paris with my wife for a short trip, and from there we went to Amsterdam and Marillion had a two-nights weekend event in Haarlem, April 14th & 15th, and I happened to have a ticket :) Both nights were amazing, the band was in great shape, Steve's voice is still so powerful after all those years. That was a dream coming true for me and it would be one of the unforgettable weekends of my life. They played some songs from the Brave album too, staying very faithful to the studio version. I admire these guys' musicianship so much, Ian on drums, Pete on bass, Mark on keys, and of course two great Steves on guitars & lead vocals. I love how they work hard to give their best to the fans, which are a big family now. Thanks for the reaction & please don't make us wait too long for another Marillion song. All the best & cheers from Istanbul 💕

So pleased you liked this song. I bought this album when it came out in 1994 and it had a big affect on me. I suggest you listen to this album from beginning to end to place this song in context. Marillion are such an underrated band. They are a perfect hybrid between Pink Floyd and Genesis. Then you have a bunch of other great albums to listen to. Enjoy!

The water lapping on the shore is what you would hear coming upon a young woman's corpse washing up upon the shore underneath a high suspension bridge.
The three sub-titles reference the three distince sub-sections of the song as demarcated by clear transitions.
The full album is like listening to the sound track of a broadway play. The songs don't tell the full story by themselves, but you can get the idea of what happened to this unfortunate, imagained young woman. It's about as horrid as one could imagine, making it easier to understand why she would choose death by suicide rather than living with her emotional pain.
It is also easy to imagine the horror running through the minds of the music executives confronted with new music aimed at young people and containing the message that sometimes things just get so dark that you might as well just kill yourself. They sent Marillion back into the studio to add another track to the album "Made Again", that makes you assume she either survived the leap, imagined it, or never really did take that leap off the bridge, providing an optimistic happy end to the album.
In a very clever artistic compromise, the vinyl release contains a unique double-groove near the end. If the needle veers one way, you get minutes of water lapping on the shore. If it bumps the other way, you get "Made Again".
There is no way any of you newcomers are going to believe what I'm about to assert, but it is true, nonetheless. Any live performance featuring Steve Hogarth's vocals and stage presence is about a dozen times more impactful, and finer, than any of the studio versions. He's on fire when performing live. Try this live performance of "The Great Escape", for example, taken from the 20th Anniversary of Brave in 2013. ua-cam.com/video/pQ74CwXcliM/v-deo.html
Any of you located in North America who just learned about Marillion still have time to do what I did in 2013 when I first heard their music: drop everything, buy tickets, book some lodging, and drive 11 hours to Montreal to experience a three-concert "Marillion Weekend". It was a highly spiritual experience. This year, the Weekend happens May 12-14. You may never have had the chance to go to a Beatles concert, or a classic line-up Yes Concert, or a Olde Songs Genesis concert, but you can still see Marillion perform live. Don't miss out.

Wow Brandon you really are knocking out reactions to some incredible songs. This my favourite Marillion song, a beautiful song with gorgeous melody about such a sad subject. Fantastic lyrics compliment the song throughout. I thought Steve Hogarth did a great taking over from Fish, who was of course a brilliant vocalist too. Many considered them 'Genesis Lite' which I did also when I was younger, as my brother was massively into them, but this is so unfair as they are a brilliant band in their own right, obviously they were massively influenced by Genesis, Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery are the best of friends. The final part of this song is just so tragic, with the fantastic lyrics 'Don't ask me why I'm doing this you wouldn't understand' 'A bridge is not a high place the 52nd floor, Icarus would now a mountain isn't far to fall, when you've fallen from the moon' Steve here showing how when you are so low that death seems the only way out. Super guitar at the end by Steve Rothery, I saw them do this live in Royal Albert Hall in London it was amazing! The standing ovation went on for ages. A truly wonderful song full of emotion on such a sad subject. Great reaction again Brandon.

Our host took advice from baseball great Ernie Banks: " Let's Play Two "
Marillion is reported to be influenced by Genesis, I hear some " Lamb Lays Down On Broadway "(the whole album, not the song specifically)vibes here, theatrical. He even sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel at points too

2fers are more work, but twice the fun! Let's see what the algorithm decides to do....Yes, I think there's much Genesis influence with this band, in all phases from what I've heard. Thanks for stopping by for this one Michael 🙂

I know it's been a year already but just as a hint: listen to the whole album, it is one of most important and best concept albums (Radiohead's OK Computer was highly influenced by it and Marillion in return thanked them with the album Radiation). The album tells the story of an abused girl who is trying to commit suicide by jumping from a bridge. The influence was a real case they read in the newspaper about. You already read about it as it seems.
Best Marillion songs you have to check out: Script for a Jester's Tear or Chelsea Monday (with Fish) and Neverland or Ocean Cloud (with h) - not sure if you did The Space already.

    One small suggestion
When listening to Marillion particularly with Steve Hogarth fronting the band you most definitely need to skip the studio versions and and make it a point of viewing the live performances this band creates a symbiosis with the audience like nothing I have ever experienced.
    It’s magical.

Great song….much emotion! I love Marillion, I’ve been listening for at least 20 years. FYI, in 2018 they released a Deluxe Edition of “Brave” which includes several songs remixed by Steven Wilson. Their very first album “Script For A Jester’s Tear” from 1983 is one of my favorites. The title track is incredible as well as “Garden Party”. In 1997 they released a remastered edition, which included a bonus disc that contains the track “Grendel”, which is a 19+ minute masterpiece! I know I mentioned awhile ago of the prog band “Transatlantic” whose bass player is Pete Trewavas from Marillion. They are really good…. but they didn’t release their first album until 2000😢. It was recorded in June-July 1999, so technically?? You might want to sneak some of them in what little free time you have. Lol

In a way, you kinda have made a wee mistake here. Marillion are superb on disc but are on a totally different level when on stage. You really need to watch one of the live performances of this, especially the Brave live 2013 performance. If you think this sounds good, that will blow you out of the water

Even if I consider the Fish period (1981-1988) as being the best of the band's production, it must be recognized that the "Brave" album (1994) is an excellent MARILLION. Thanks.
