"Made in England" plaque: I stopped everything I was doing last year on my '66 3.8 - which was much - and took time to polish that stupid little plaque when I discovered it recessed in the bonnet well. Feeling accomplished, I took the week off.
Quick way to remove the floor schmoo is dry ice and Isopropyl alcohol. Removes everything. factory sound deadening and insulation. You'll need a LOT of Dry Ice and maybe a half gallon of ISO. Soak the floor area with just enough ISO to get everything damp. Then cover the area in dry ice. Crack a beer, take your time drinking it. Then scoop the dry ice into a bucket and scrape the floor with a wide putty knife. or something appropriate. Thank Power Nation's Detroit muscle guys. It was their tip. Cheers y'all! @@4literv6 Agreed. I had not heard of this before. Had a guy tell me to use kerosene and light it up to loosen the goo. Didn't take him up on it as some British cars are self igniting anyway and I didn't want to burn down my garage.
@@uliwehner totally agree. But wood has many uses but we don't build cars or vehicles from wood either. Wood is used for holding things up including cars and even our railroad ties are made of WOOD. They do hold up many things with wood, must be why it is popular.
Dry ice on the floor makes that stuff (floor sealant, seam seal, tar, whatever is on there) brittle and pops right up. Not sure you will have to do this again but makes it alot less painful to get done.
The sound deadening in the jag isn't the same substance that is on the unibody floor of modern vehicles. The stuff in the Jag will not harden and Shatter away like the stuff you are all used to dealing with
For people who do have the stuff which shatters when cold (not likely this Jag)... if you live far enough north, you just have to procrastinate until winter, then hit it with a hammer. Worked for me.

In my long (so far) life, have done that often, but when it cost me money, quickly updated my mental software. "Going back" ceased, satisfaction increased. Like these short videos.
Just title the videos "The saga continues - bunches of odds and ends - Episode 1, 2, 3, etc." For those that don't fit a theme or category of build. I enjoy your dry sense of humor with hints (or overload) of sarcasm. Hope you get this project done and don't give up on it. I've seen other youtubers build EV's with Tesla batteries, motors, etc. and getting all those parts to play nicely appears to be its own challenge separate from getting everything to fit and work in another vehicle body. My hat remains off to you (and I didn't even slip on pavement and have it fly off). :)

There was an episode of Roadkill where Freiburger referred to these jobs ad the "nickel and dime, run to the parts store 100 times little things that kill you" and that stuck with me. Every project always unexpectedly has a couple weeks of this, and its always right when youre close to "done" and you just want to drive the car
These kinds of things are absolutely the most important parts of a build. I'm starting my '81 RX-7 time attack build with full '04 RX-8 drivetrain and suspension, and by far the most intimidating part is the inbetweens. The fitting stupid shit, welding stupid shit, wiring stupid shit, brake lines, EPAS, you cover so many little things everyone else glosses over that'll take the layman days if they're normal or weeks/months if they're sane (unlike me who's gonna get slapped the fuck into Super Unlimited immediately)
The best way to remove that stiky rubbery thing is by moving you and your family to Chicago, park the car outsaid and wait. Then, in the middle of the winter the thing gets hard enougth so you can remove it by hammer. Dry ice work too.

Sometimes tackling various little things like this can be a peaceful, low stress part of the project. I often get a nice feeling of accomplishment after completing some of the little things that have been bugging me.
On longer projects it makes you feel like you're not getting anything done. In reality, you're getting a LOT done that has to be done anyway, but you just can't look back at it and feel the accomplishment. Mounting battery boxes or a motor or the body is a lot more satisfying than fitting the vacuum pump, or installing the fuse in the circuit that you've had wired hot for months when you knew better.
Matt I'm thinking how does this guy know how to do all this stuff? Where did you learn how to do all these different things? And do them so well. I think the "shop" class was long replaced with a programming class. Sitting at a video game was much more popular. This is all really entertaining on so many levels.
Matt, next time you need to jig saw a piece of sheet metal lay it on top of some 2" think hard foam board. The saw won't know the foam is there and the sheet metal won't vibrate and bounce like a mo fo! Use a propane torch to soften that black shit as you scrape, mucho easier. You can anneal aluminum, cover it with soot from an acetylene torch with no oxygen, and then add oxy and slowly heat the metal until it gets just hot enough to burn the soot off, as an indicator of the correct temperature.
Rather than trying to heat up 6000 series aluminium to bend it would be better to buy the correct grade. 3000 or 5000 series alloys can be cold bent without issue, and will actually come out stronger afterwards. Heating up any of the precipitation hardened alloys like 2000, 6000 or 7000 series will spoil the temper and greatly reduce the strength.
Reminds me of what a former neighbor said about building a kitplane. When it seems like you're 3/4 of the way done, you are probably only 1/2 the way done (at best) due to all the little things.
I had to do the same thing with my MGB floor pans. Luckily, I had a Dremel oscillating saw thingy. It worked a treat digging through 50 year old asphalt. I think that self leveling stuff looks to be what I am going to put in once I fix the floors. I have been ignoring the floors a lot like you. I will get to it eventually. lol
I think the ending was the best: it’s not just car knowledge, but so many jokes, sometimes I rewatch these and catch jokes I missed the first time around
A heat gun would have made scraping the goo off the floor easier. Since the Jag is an English luxury car, I'll assume the goo is made from boiled orphans that will easily soften with heat. Now that I have thought about this for a second, heating batteries is a bad idea. Carry on.
Brother, I feel your pain! My Tesla Jeep was supposed to be done by June. No. I moved my goal to mid-July. I got the motor to spin in July...then my DCDC converter crapped out. New DCDC converter so I moved my goal to August...then my Inverter crapped out...then the second DCDC converter crapped out. Then I had surgery on my arm. I'm thinking November now. We're having fun, right?
Dry ice works wonders on removing that old rubberized undercoating. Makes it brittle and delaminate. If you know a guy, dry ice blasting makes it real quick with little cleanup.
I took the dashboard out of my car to fix it in January - I figured it would only take a couple of weeks. It's now September (only just), and the dashboard is still out. Mainly because I need to move some more things to fit it back in, and ever time I get one done, 2 more appear.
Similar story on my rescued 944. About 1 year in now and have managed to get it roadworthy. Seems every time I fixed 1 item 2 more appeared. Made a list and committed to complete 1 item every day even if the list grew. Finally got o the road last week and it feels so old. Wait… are those the shocks I hear clunking in the rear?

I have some old sound deadening material to remove in my 77 MGB. I am going to try using dry ice to make it extra brittle and then chisel it out. Hopefully it works well, I just need to locate dry ice 🤔
If it helps, I had Send Cut Send perforate my bend lines to make them easier to fold. It made it really easy to fold thick sheet over long lengths with a couple of pieces of angle iron clamped in place to help the folds. Also, the crud on the floor comes up really easy with a heat gun with the spatula attachment. Great idea to use the self leveling sealer, its a great sound deadening solution. The car looks like its coming along great. Are you going to make a Grey Pupon holder for the dash for when you pull up next to another posh ride?

The "little things" are sometimes the biggest problem! And sometimes, it takes one big thing to order the process of all the little things. I'm installing a sound system in my car, and the amount of little things is daunting to the point where it's easier to consolidate them into one big problem, and go through oder of operations from there. Ugh.
Door panels off, speakers out, Interior trim off, run wiring, smack your head in the trunk pulling up the speaker grill Speakers in Trim on, panels on, car on, stereo on 3/4 speakers functional.... Glass of rum, door panels off again.. etc

we perforated my Corvair gas tank putting in a "quarter-assed" (TM) patch panel. Big surprise when I filled the tank.

To clean the floor, you can freeze the crap (with dry ice) before you remove it: it will limit the gooeyness to a minimum. A really low minimum.

Spot blaster plus vaccuum cleaner. Slow but less messy and deals (properly) with the rust, which is going to come back to haunt you.

Dry ice works wonders on removing that old rubberized undercoating. Makes it brittle and delaminate. If you know a guy, dry ice blasting makes it real quick with little cleanup.
I took the dashboard out of my car to fix it in January - I figured it would only take a couple of weeks. It's now September (only just), and the dashboard is still out. Mainly because I need to move some more things to fit it back in, and ever time I get one done, 2 more appear.
Similar story on my rescued 944. About 1 year in now and have managed to get it roadworthy. Seems every time I fixed 1 item 2 more appeared. Made a list and committed to complete 1 item every day even if the list grew. Finally got o the road last week and it feels so old. Wait… are those the shocks I hear clunking in the rear?

I have some old sound deadening material to remove in my 77 MGB. I am going to try using dry ice to make it extra brittle and then chisel it out. Hopefully it works well, I just need to locate dry ice 🤔

If it helps, I had Send Cut Send perforate my bend lines to make them easier to fold. It made it really easy to fold thick sheet over long lengths with a couple of pieces of angle iron clamped in place to help the folds. Also, the crud on the floor comes up really easy with a heat gun with the spatula attachment. Great idea to use the self leveling sealer, its a great sound deadening solution. The car looks like its coming along great. Are you going to make a Grey Pupon holder for the dash for when you pull up next to another posh ride?

I've seen people use those pneumatic needle scalers for getting underbody coatings off. It might've been helpful for your floor.

The "little things" are sometimes the biggest problem! And sometimes, it takes one big thing to order the process of all the little things. I'm installing a sound system in my car, and the amount of little things is daunting to the point where it's easier to consolidate them into one big problem, and go through oder of operations from there. Ugh.

you just need really clean surfaces and that stuff is magic. bare metal, then wipe with acetone.

why no hockey puck for mounts
Too thick: Matt wanted 3/4" and a puck is 1" thick.
A heat gun works good to get that stuff off easier. You need to wear a respirator when you do it, but it makes it much faster.
Not entirely sure how you manage it, but your installments just get better and better. And by better, I mean increasingly infuriating and illiciting even more foul-mouthed retorts at my laptop screen. Good work Matt! :)

It's thicker than Matt wanted... but yes. I use them as pads on floor jacks to lift cars, with a groove cut to match the rocker panel edge.

FYI dry ice makes taking out old tar coatings easy. Once it’s cold tap it with a hammer.
