I used that amp for a little over a year (before getting a real JSX, then a XXXII). The Noise Clamp is meant for using with noisy distortion pedals.. Run an MXR Smart Gate in front, then crank up the amp's "gate" to 10 (and turn up the Presence to make up for any high end "tone loss"). Problem solved!
Hello Trey, great video! Have one issue that's pissin' me off: how to properly connect the noise gate into a looper switcher with 4 cables method and no amp fx/loop (i don't have fx/loop, is all in front of the amp). My current chain is: Guitar --> Input gate, Send gate --> Input looper, after that i have all the ODs and Distortions pedals into the switcher's L1, L2 and L3 Then i go with Return gate --> Send Loop4, Output gate --> Return Loop4. WIth this chain it actually works. I don't have any noise, it's all quiet but it seems is eating a lot of signal that came out from the distortion pedals and I need to turn threshold knob almost all way down to close the gate. I don't know if it does exist any other method to connect properly the gate after the ODs/Dist pedals, using a looper switcher. Hope you can help me! Cheers!
Great video! But it would've been nice, if you would've shown the sustain of it now... Like just holding and note and seeing where the gate cuts it off
NO! That's NOT a "Double Gate" (or Dual Gate)... It's just a "triggered" (or "keyed") gate, like the ISP Decimator G-string, Lichtlaerm Key and Gate, Fortin Zuul & Zuul+, Highwind Phalanx, and many more (mostly using a THAT 4301 or 4305S circuit). Few brands offer a Dual Gate, especially in pedal form (and I'm not talking about running a Boss NS-2 or Rocktron "Guitar Silencer", using the "real" 4CM, which does work). For a "double gate", I think using 2 ISP Decimator II pedals (one in front of the amp, and the other in the loop.. Linked together with a 3.5mm TRS cable) will work best with any high gain amp, in any situation. However, if you want a Dual Gate (two separate gates in one pedal), I highly recommend The GUPtech "SUN2" Gate (aka Dual Guul). It's the best, especially for it's price (under $235). The SUN Gate is a Fortin Zuul clone, but for half the price AND it has a "Key Out" (which the Zuul doesn't have).. So, the SUN2 is like running a Fortin Zuul in front and in the loop (with separate Threshold knobs), eliminating the need for any "Key" or trigger. It also has an Isolation switch, so you can run each gate to 2 separate amps, if you need to do that. There's also the Airis Effects "Hades" Ultra Gate, the LWA Tannhauser (two Endless Blockades), and a couple other pedals, but they're expensive and can be hard to find. The only way to use a "Double Gate" with the gear in this video is by running the Cock Blocker in front of the amp, and using the ENGL's built-in Gate for the amp noise. Anyway, I hope this helps (given the very misleading title).
I wish it was that simple! I have a G string. On my Marshall DSL 20 going into torpedo captor. When the OD comes in front, with the tiny extra gain push, the noise gate loses its sensitivity or gets over loaded i guess! Meaning when i scrub my fingers on strings, they are noisy and if i wanna kill that noise, i have to push the gate, and eventually i end up losing lots of low ends and dynamic sound. Still couldn’t figure out why…i didn’t have this issue with my ENGL iron ball and it’s built in attenuator. At least not that much.
novice relative to you, so ive gigged and i own a pre amp,, but wondering when or why you'd run your pre amp when playing live to your amp unless you need a recording or something wild and even if recording id just put the pre amp off a mixer output. or maybe im just fried on this one. i only think of pre amps to use in recording for digital..
dood man let me fill you in on a big time secret I have left silent until today.. back in the day leo fender was a frugal kinda guy, and when he went to wire up guitars he wadnt bout to go order specialty wire for his guitars, so he grabbed ............................................. you guessed it, AMP wire, cloth covered copper stranded wire... and being a radio guy he was yet to realize he was actually installing antennas inside the guitar, so he amplified and amplified the cycle hum.. the fix? get yourself some 38 gauge copper stranded wire, tin coated!!! this will not only reduce your noise dramatically but your tone will be oh so creamy and fat because why? well because the thinner wire shuts out more noise than a larger cloth wire and has less resistance, DUH, insulation is big too so if you can get double insulated mo betta... no jokes, just using the thinner wire is huge, why do you think all the superstrat guys in the day used uber thin wire, charvel, jackson, carver hamer, kramer.. cuz it sounds better than that monster cloth cable fenner used cuz he was too cheap to order specialty wire that would perform ten times better, and today people buy cloth covered wire cuz Leos vintage guitars used it.. goof E I know but go try it, be sure to use a good solder iron, good solder as In a good 60/40 a good quality sticky solder that stays thick at temp and doesn't wash away, it actually flows, but sticks, that means QUALITY solder, not the cheapest garb you can find, use good rosin gel each flow and clean the tip each flow, it matters, and you cannot take too much time between the tip dip in the rosin to soldering the tip to application, too long will burn the rosin up and fubar the joint, where 90% of your cold joints come from a dirty surface area, the rosin simply burnt up and couldn't do its job cuz it was on the tip too long, same for solder, it has rosin in the core it cannot spend too much time on the tip, why it's best to actually heat the surface with the iron then flow in by touching it with the solder wire.. I know it's not possible in a lot of situations for guitars but any time you can it's better for good joints, and when you can't be sure to get it to the joint in less than say 4 seconds, no jokes.. here's a good solder tip, get rosin gel, then use a toothpick or some other application to slather some rosin gel to the joint, then solder your iron tip and apply quick at least this way you will have good clean rosin for a good clean joint and your rosin won't burn up in the time it takes to go to the solder wire and melt some on the tip.. messy sure, cleaner yes, q tips clean up messes well, a lil alcohol.. get the tip as close as possible to the joint, then poke the wire in and melt on the tip and go, under 4 seconds.. 2 is better, none is best... a lot of guitar noise is from bad solder joints, no jokes, bad solder joints on input jacks especially.. and ALWAYS heat shrink over your jack lugs and wire maybe twice, as the positive may be touching? body routed inputs like teles are tight, some folks will paint with electric paint then the + will just barely touch when the cable wiggles and it will make noise, so maybe a piece of paper will help, definitely small gauge wire and small solder joints, you want flat solder joints not massive gobs, save the massive gobs for the woman... try the small gauge wire, its very affordable even the real good stuff, like 100ft of 5 colors for like $30? less on sale.. you will notice a huge difference in noise and your cycle hum will be almost non existence, and there is a very easy way to get rid of that a dummy coil, and it wont take or add anything from your favorite single coil.. if you think so there is another way for sure 2 volumes, reverse the polarity on the middle pickup and give the middle pickup its own volume pot, wire bridge and neck to the other volume, master tone pot.. OR go master volume with the the middle pickup reversed on its own slave volume so the master will always control all pickups.. either way, this way you can use the bridge, middle or neck separately by using teh 2nd and 3rd position then turning the volume off on the middle pickup, the reverse polarity will give you a humbucker but you turn the volume off on the middle coil, it's still in the circuit but its silent mode... this really does work and a lot of guys use it.. it's a great studio trick, or buy a reverse wound middle pickup and use the same trick, you note most fenners have a yellow wire middle pickup these days? cuz its reverse wound... all you do then is wire them up with 2 volumes one tone, middle its own volume so easy like so solder joints... it's the easiest way wire the two volume pots one tone knob, then reverse the middle pickup, like what 4 solder joints and delsoder 3? so easy, but very effective if you have naggy cycle hum, this is also a good way to troubleshoot cycle hum from poor solder joints, faulty electronics like pots and switches so forth.. a lot of time this hum is something else entirely, faulty components or bad solder joints, wires touching to bad wire... yessir TRY IT

i plug my pedalboard to the front of the amp (clean channel) i have a mxr 5150 overdrive and a isp decimator, do i need to put the isp con the effects loop even though i'm on the clean channel? or do i put it infront? please i need some advice haha
Since the 5150 OD has a Gate, you could run the Decimator before the 5150, or just turn the 5150's gate off and run the Decimator right after that. If that's your only source of distortion, then there's no reason to use it in the amp's loop.
I use this technique with my sentry, it's super effective. Sometime I accidentally put on my HM2 and my MT2 together and there is no noise (until I hit the strings).
I tried doing the same with the Sentry but I was getting ground loops between the fx loop and guitar-amp line... So the gate added more noise than it removed... Did you have this issue? Are you using some sort of iso transformer in your chain?
I use a TC Electronic Iron Curtain in my amps fx loop send. I use a Boss NS-2 for the input. Both hidden in my amp. I have a photo of it on my JRPowell3_music Instagram. It is a great technique. I used to run my ADA MP-1 preamp through the NS-2 at a lower volume more like a pedal level. Then sent it to my Tubeworks Realtube II preamp with stereo fx loop. I used additional Noise Reduction with the Hush in my Rocktron Replifex and also in the Intellifex. So, technically 3 gates there. I miss that rack setup. Unfortunately, my ADA MP-1s are super noisey now. I plan to revive my rack and use Synergy Syn-2 and Syn 50/50 amp.
I don't know what your tech language means - I have super basic set up - rode nt1 against small orange amp - USA strat I just want silence ☹️ if I use a standard gate and buy the block at the same time will this destroy all noise?
Double gating is new to me, I've used the BOSS NS-2 on my pedal board and have been looking for something else. So I'll be trying this technique as well as the Cockblocker, sadly I'll be waiting 3 months. lol
@@simon_patterson No. You can actually gate both ends with the NS-2, whereas the Cock Blocker only gates one end (the Guitar In and Out only helps the gate open and close faster.. It doesn't actually "gate" anything itself).
I run two decimator 2s..one in front of my amp and one in my fx loop. I could've got the G string for the same price but I figured having two knobs is better than just one. I used to use two ns-2s and this has been a huge improvement.
@@McGuinty2 The Cock Blocker doesn't work like that. It works just like a Decimator G-string. It's not gating both ends. Trey knows that.. Idk why he went with that title. There's reasons to use 2 NS-2 pedals (although the NS-50 would've been better).. He could've been using pedals in front of the amp, and needed them in the loop of the NS-2, or he could've just wanted them set at different Thresholds, or to have the ability to turn one off while leaving the other on.. or he just didn't know about the "X pattern", aka the original "4CM".
I just use a standard old Decimator in the loop, and I don't have any problems as far a sound goes. The only problem is I have to turn it off every time I change to the clean channel
I'm running a tc electronics sentry like this and it cuts quieter notes that would sustain on high gain without it. I think you need 2 independently adjustable noise gates. One set just to clean up your guitars natural noise and another to close off the preamp noise.
Why do others connect it differently (using a 4 cable method)? Meaning that: 1) Blocker OUT --------> goes to Amp input 2) Amp SEND ----------> goes into Blocker IN 3) Guitar OUT (of the pedal) -------------> goes into the Amp RETURN. Huhhhhhhhhhhhhhh???
Personally, I wouldn't pay $200 for a noise gate. You can get the Electro Harmonix Silencer for under a bill. It has a built-in FX loop, more features & bang for your buck & it works just as good as any other gate if not, maybe better than most.

And why the fuck didn’t you tell anyone? You thought you can get away with this secret for the rest of your life? You do the hell do you think you are?
Yeah. As long as the gate has a built-in loop, you can make it function as a dual gate.. This thing is definitely NOT a dual gate.
hey electrical deity my amp has an inbuilt gate (bugera 333xl infinum) and I also have a mxr noise clamp pedal and I still get lots of squeal the second im not playing, ive reduced it by not being a noob who keeps his pedals on his head anymore but its still quite bad, please advise this mere mortal on what else I can do, drives my house mates nuts when the second I stop playing unearthed riffs my amp starts screaming like an unholy demon, thanks
My current chain is:
Guitar --> Input gate, Send gate --> Input looper,
after that i have all the ODs and Distortions pedals into the switcher's L1, L2 and L3
Then i go with Return gate --> Send Loop4, Output gate --> Return Loop4.
Like just holding and note and seeing where the gate cuts it off
Grandma Glennda
Never thought I’d get cliffhanged on a UA-cam video
2 is better, none is best...
a lot of guitar noise is from bad solder joints, no jokes, bad solder joints on input jacks especially.. and ALWAYS heat shrink over your jack lugs and wire maybe twice, as the positive may be touching? body routed inputs like teles are tight, some folks will paint with electric paint then the + will just barely touch when the cable wiggles and it will make noise, so maybe a piece of paper will help, definitely small gauge wire and small solder joints, you want flat solder joints not massive gobs, save the massive gobs for the woman...
try the small gauge wire, its very affordable even the real good stuff, like 100ft of 5 colors for like $30? less on sale.. you will notice a huge difference in noise and your cycle hum will be almost non existence, and there is a very easy way to get rid of that a dummy coil, and it wont take or add anything from your favorite single coil.. if you think so there is another way for sure
2 volumes, reverse the polarity on the middle pickup and give the middle pickup its own volume pot, wire bridge and neck to the other volume, master tone pot.. OR go master volume with the the middle pickup reversed on its own slave volume so the master will always control all pickups.. either way, this way you can use the bridge, middle or neck separately by using teh 2nd and 3rd position then turning the volume off on the middle pickup, the reverse polarity will give you a humbucker but you turn the volume off on the middle coil, it's still in the circuit but its silent mode... this really does work and a lot of guys use it.. it's a great studio trick, or buy a reverse wound middle pickup and use the same trick, you note most fenners have a yellow wire middle pickup these days? cuz its reverse wound... all you do then is wire them up with 2 volumes one tone, middle its own volume so easy like so solder joints...
it's the easiest way wire the two volume pots one tone knob, then reverse the middle pickup, like what 4 solder joints and delsoder 3? so easy, but very effective if you have naggy cycle hum, this is also a good way to troubleshoot cycle hum from poor solder joints, faulty electronics like pots and switches so forth.. a lot of time this hum is something else entirely, faulty components or bad solder joints, wires touching to bad wire... yessir TRY IT
With the ENGL Savage having a built in Gate, how would it change things with it engaged and double gating? Asking as I have a savage and debated on getting a gate to put in front of it. Didn’t know if it’s worth it or not. Thanks!
When it comes to geargods video. I always press like button before i watch the video.
Need some guidance man. I play through a PRS archon 100. Just everything is noisey asf.
Would this tame this monster?
i plug my pedalboard to the front of the amp (clean channel) i have a mxr 5150 overdrive and a isp decimator, do i need to put the isp con the effects loop even though i'm on the clean channel? or do i put it infront? please i need some advice haha
Since the 5150 OD has a Gate, you could run the Decimator before the 5150, or just turn the 5150's gate off and run the Decimator right after that.
If that's your only source of distortion, then there's no reason to use it in the amp's loop.
How to use noise gate on a combo amp ? I have BOSSkatanaMini & thats it..would it work?...please help?
I use this technique with my sentry, it's super effective. Sometime I accidentally put on my HM2 and my MT2 together and there is no noise (until I hit the strings).
I tried doing the same with the Sentry but I was getting ground loops between the fx loop and guitar-amp line... So the gate added more noise than it removed... Did you have this issue? Are you using some sort of iso transformer in your chain?
The REGULAR/PROPER gate technique doesn't sound as good I guess haha seriously though all gate pedals should be set up like this
I use a TC Electronic Iron Curtain in my amps fx loop send.
Trey, thanks so much. profoundly intelligent.
So I'll be trying this technique as well as the Cockblocker, sadly I'll be waiting 3 months. lol
Isn't using the send and return functionality of your ns-2 achieving the same thing?
Yikes. I bet you were disappointed when you realized the Cock Blocker isn't a Double Gate..
Same. I've tried both. They both get the job done, but I like turning the "front" gate on and off when needed, and there's more control.
Why would you use 2 ns-2s when you can use the send and return jacks of a single ns-2 in the same way that the cock blocker works in this video?
@@McGuinty2 The Cock Blocker doesn't work like that. It works just like a Decimator G-string. It's not gating both ends. Trey knows that.. Idk why he went with that title.
There's reasons to use 2 NS-2 pedals (although the NS-50 would've been better).. He could've been using pedals in front of the amp, and needed them in the loop of the NS-2, or he could've just wanted them set at different Thresholds, or to have the ability to turn one off while leaving the other on.. or he just didn't know about the "X pattern", aka the original "4CM".
Very cool, say hi to Grandma for me...lol
What other noise gates will double gate like this? Of course the NS2 will.
Dude I’ve been trying to find one of these for sale.... the internet has none! Where can I buy one? Love the functionality of these
what is the better choice the Cockblocker Gate or an ISP Decimator II G-String
Is it possible for the added cable length to reduce tone quality?
So, TL;DW = put a gate in front of the amp and another in the FX loop?
Anything associated to Glen Fricker is something I want to stay well away from.
Well that's one thing I didn't know. Thanks man.
I just use a standard old Decimator in the loop, and I don't have any problems as far a sound goes. The only problem is I have to turn it off every time I change to the clean channel
That's what the G-string version was made for.
Please hold a long single note, so we can see when its actually closing.
That did fuck me up on stage :D
I'm running a tc electronics sentry like this and it cuts quieter notes that would sustain on high gain without it. I think you need 2 independently adjustable noise gates. One set just to clean up your guitars natural noise and another to close off the preamp noise.
Would this work on the jazz chorus?
Why do others connect it differently (using a 4 cable method)? Meaning that:
1) Blocker OUT --------> goes to Amp input
2) Amp SEND ----------> goes into Blocker IN
3) Guitar OUT (of the pedal) -------------> goes into the Amp RETURN.
Huhhhhhhhhhhhhhh???
What do u mean?? Isn’t he doing the 4 cable method??
I'm an idiot because I don't get this at all. Anyone got a diagram?
I never thought of doing this with my old DOD noise gate, I almost regret trading that thing away. It worked so well
So is the Cockblocker no longer available for sale?
Why did you show me this :( can’t find it anywhere
Can’t find one for sale anywhere
wow i learn so much in one video about guitar noise. Thanks
How about adding this noise gate to several other pedals such as distortionpedals for example.. ??

Wait! Dont all Fender Ultra series have NOISELESS pup's? Are you calling Fender liars?? 🎶🎸
I think Noiseless is a relative term in this case
Is there a rack mount version of this?
I don't think you can say cocks and peanuts in the same video lol. Great demo, Trey!
Cocks and Peanuts might be the worst band name ever
@@treyxaviermusic Man... You took it to another league haha.
to bad you cant buy this damn pedal!!!!
Doesn’t that tele have noiseless pick ups in it

Is this a shameless plug to sell two pedals instead of one? If so well played :)
Personally, I wouldn't pay $200 for a noise gate. You can get the Electro Harmonix Silencer for under a bill. It has a built-in FX loop, more features & bang for your buck & it works just as good as any other gate if not, maybe better than most.
@@jeremycastillo4759 Boss NS2 is around $99 with plenty on offer used so I agree. Lot of other options.
@@crimsonfiredotnet until you compare it to the cockblocker. The ns2 is a tonesucker.
Low price. Buy twice
That outro. So much wow. :D
Can I gate Ryan Bruce?
Peanuts and Cockblocker?
219$ for a noise gate ...... gtfo
There are better for cheaper, or get a fortin Zuul for 225.
Glen is crazy trying to sell this with such a high price point.
But you think people should buy a more expensive one instead?
Great tip! What if you don’t want your reverb and delay gated?
They go in the loop AFTER the gate.
I'm using decimator rack and I'm happy :)
2:35 did you just slap like now ?
Any idea where to grab one of these today?
Real shitty box, Glenn.
