  • DIY this Xenon headlight replacement, partially thanks to the Ford Flex Forum guys. Saved about $900 based on what the Ford dealership quoted me for one headlight. Yes, it is true that you need to remove the bumper cover, but it is not all that difficult to do.

Great BUMPER COVER REMOVAL VIDEO...BUT...I side with the many below noting that bumper cover removal IS NOT required to replace the bulb.
    1. remove circular rubber cap.
    2. carefully turn the square metal bulb counterclockwise approx. 1/4 turn.
    3. slightly bend the electrical connector cord to allow removal through the round hole.
    4. Very slowly and gently back out the bulb after clearing the bulb housing.
    5. Pull out bulb and connector cable far enough to remove connector (only pliers needed-no clips). 6. insert connector onto bulb.
    7. With connector at 3 O'clock position, gently work bulb through access hole and into housing. DO NOT FORCE.
    8. When inserted properly, does not take a lot to turn clockwise to lock position (which will leave connector at the 6 O'clock position.
    9.Reinsert Rubber Plug.
WARNING: If you turn on lights, the bulb element gets VERRRRY Hot. I replaced a "dim" bulb to match my new bright one. After only 30 seconds on before I turned off and started removing, I burned my finger badly.
I believe the extra work and risk of damaging bumper cover are not worth it. BUT, if you retitled this video "Ford Flex Bumper cover removal for headlight lens access" it would be spot on!

My son did his in less than 30 minutes. Didn't remove the bumper or grille assembly. Just reached in and took the black round cover off each side. 2010 Flex Limited. But the video was still helpful in getting the bulbs out and back in. Thank you.

I did what Michael Kachinsky did, removed the circular rubber cover, replaced the bulb. No need to remove the from bumper assembly.

I did the same. Took all of 4 minutes. Why would you ever remove the bumper?

Agreed. Just replaced my bulbs today. Took maybe 10-15 minutes max. No bumper removal. No headlight assembly removal. Thank you Ford for such an easy replacement.

The Ford dealer would tell you that the Limited version requires the bumper cover to come off...I could not get my big hands anywhere near the dust cover. Thankfully I got rid of that Flex and replaced it with a truck. Hi Ho...

Great video! I did manage to replace both of my Factory Xenons without taking off the bumper or headlight assembly. (2009 Limited) It is a tight squeeze, but possible! Took me about 30 minutes to do both bulbs! It feels good to save $$$ instead of forking it over to the Ford dealership

Same here. Take the dust cover off, twist pull , undo the cable. Pop a new bulb in and reseat the cable , twist and lock (the twist and lock was probably the hardest part)

Thanks for this video. There were two additional plastic push pins underneath the front license plate area in my 2011 Flex Limited that needed to be removed before my bumper cover would detach. I found removing the ballasts made connecting the wire to the bulb much easier without risking damaging the new and expensive bulbs. This video was a great DIY guide and money saver.

I have to agree with Sarah, I was able to replace HID XENON headlamps by just removing the black cover. It was a tight fit and I have been told I have sausage fingers but was able to do it. The video was helpful by mentioning that the wire could be bent.

Yours are a different type headlight. I have other Fords with your type, and they are easy to replace. These are xenon, projector type headlights. This is the ONLY way to change those headlights

    • @michaelkachinsky6712
      @michaelkachinsky6712 6 років тому

I still have to disagree, mine are the EXACT same lights in your video. Osram 66340. From the front of the Flex I have the glass ball looking assembly, which means projector type. No need to remove bumper cover. Just remove black rubber cover on back of assembly and remove light bulb.

Michael Kachinsky you are wrong. I showed this video to the techs at the dealership, and that is exactly how they have to do it. Do some more research...

I just used this video to help me change my bulb which is the exact type in this video . I have to agree with mike on this. I replaced it with a philips d3s c1 xenon bulb. I did not remove bumper cover it took me 30 minutes mostly cause I kept having to look back at the video. Not trying to stir up anything just saying there is an easier way. Thanks.

I've come to believe that depending on what factory your flex was made in, some of the xenon bulbs can be changed without having to remove the bumper cover, and some require removal of the bumper cover… Ford.

THANKS! Excellent video - this is what makes UA-cam valuable. Just used your guidance to replace both bulbs in my 2010 Flex Limited. While theoretically it may be possible to replace them without removing the bumper cover (especially the driver side) as some have noted, this approach definitely works and poses less risk to breaking the bulbs. Add $1,300 to your tally of savings - my dealer quoted $1,400 to replace them (the bulbs cost about $100 on Amazon).

I have a 2011 Lincoln MKT and this Video helped as the two cars are much alike. One difference was that I had two torque screws that held a bracket that had to come out before I could remove the bulb. Saved $1000 from the Lincoln Dealership by doing it myself.

This video was invaluable in helping me complete this project. Great job! Side note... one very minor step was left out: at about the 1:20 mark in the video when you're describing the 4 bolts that have to removed, you forgot to mention the one small plastic push-pin-clip on top of the headlight assembly that also has to be removed (or it did on my Flex, anyway). Other than that, 100% accurate. Thanks a million... or at least $900! ;-)

Maybe it's an older design, but my 2012 was much easier. I didn't use any tools and the rubber round cover was accessible under the hood. I removed the fuse box cover on the driver's side to give me more room. Popped the cover off; reached in and rotated the bulb, unhooked the wire, replaced bulb. That was it. Mine are Xenon HID. Titanium trim.

This was a very helpful video when I replaced the HID bulbs today on my 2010 Flex Limited Ecoboost. I also took the time to replace the signal bulbs for $6 while they were easy access even though they weren't needed at this time (I was surprised they are standard bulbs). The original HID's made it to 100,000 miles so I'm hoping I don't have to do this process again until after 200k miles! Thanks for a helpful video!!!

Need to pop the center piece of grill that extends into headlghts. Behind that are two 10 mm bolts that need to be removed before bumper comes off. This is the whole trick to the job. I did it in less than 30 mins taking bumper off and would be much faster next to around.

So you don't need to remove the ballast like you did at 1:42, to remove the bulb and high tension connector? Looks like you ended up replacing the bulb all through the round access seal/port? Is that correct?

There were some flexes along the way, maybe a midyear production run that required the removal of the bumper cover… I have discovered that there are some from the same year with the projection headlights that do not require removal. Mine definitely required removal, as I tried everything known to man to get them out before I discovered the Ford process for doing it
