Hey Scott. Great vid, I learned a lot. I have a question since you mentioned you often shoot weddings. How do you feel about the GH5's low light performance in situations like being at a dark wedding reception? As someone who's just getting into wedding videography, I'm cautious of jumping on the GH5 bandwagon and then realizing my low light footage is going to look like garbage in comparison to what the A7S ii can produce. Would love to hear your take on this. Thanks!
Patrick Gibbons the a7sii is the low light king, no question about it. The GH5 does a good job though and I have no issues with it. With that said, I light things for visual effect regardless, so low light isn't as big of a deal to me. Not everyone does that. I'm doing another behind the scenes wedding shoot again today so subscribe to the channel so you can check it out.
Something I'd like to point out with DXO's low light test is they "correct for sensor size", which is a great big no-no for detector testing. The A7Sii gets a DXO low light score of 2993 The GH5 gets a a DXO low light score of 807 but if "uncorrected" it, that becomes 3212 - oops! Which confirms my own real world low light tests comparing the GH4 to the Nikon D600, the Panny blows the socks off it, the D600 can't even autofocus in low light
Scott, I wish people would refer to the AF you're talking about as "Continuous Auto-Focus" vs. just the word Auto Focus! GH5 has an incredibly fast Auto Focus. Autofocus used to be the term used when focus is acquired after you press the AF button. That's from Photography. AF Servo, or Continuous Auto focus is what's used in video where the camera will decide what needs to remain in focus through time. This loose use of the term AF and saying that GH5 has a bad AF is really doing the camera a disservice. It has an incredible AF. However, it doesn't have the best continuous AF. There's a big difference between test two terms and why people are confused. Still people say it has a great AF and video people say it has a terrible AF. It's because people are not being specific enough when using terminology. Thanks for sharing your settings. I"ve found the same thing, one point AF or one area AF is the way to go for continuous AF.
Real World Endo really great points. One of hr biggest reasons I think it will get improved with a software or firmware update. Since it has no problem grabbing focus quickly, but it hunts looking for it, I think it can be improved greatly. We shall see. Thanks for the informative post.
Thanks. The grabbing I've found can be addressed by switching from AF Continuous to AFS (Auto Focus Single). Most of the time, we don't need the camera to continue to focus once the record button has been hit. You want it to find focus, press record, and have it lock on. When you choose Auto Focus Single, then the focus is locked as soon as the record button is hit. I've found in the vast majority of situations this is the way I use the camera. To quickly switch to Continuous Focus simply assign the same identical settings to two separate Custom Modes with Continuous vs. Single AF being the only difference. Then based on the situation where you need continuous AF vs Single AF switch between the appropriate mode! Cheers!
Which one? The GH4/5 has two continuous focus systems. AFC for stills and "Continuous Focus" found in the Movie Menu, the latter overrides AFC. If you are shooting movie, set it to AFS/AFF or AFC it doesn't matter because Movie Continuous Focus will override them. If you set it to MF it will MF. If you find poor autofocus response shooting movie then you really need to learn how to use these cameras because they have extremely good continuous focus during movie (and stills). On the Panny it's called 1-Area but that will contain several AF zones, being contrast detection it doesn't have focus points, it has areas. Again, learn the camera.
Something else - hitting the red record button does something a bit different to swivelling the dial around to movie. If the dial is in stills mode then hitting the red button mostly uses stills settings and a limited movie menu.
My GH5 arrives on monday and my buyer's remorse had been peaking until your reassuring video landed in my lap. Subbed. Some creative thinking and a bit of faith in future firmware updates are just what the doctor ordered.
I don't know if anyone has told you, but I really enjoy that you do your vlogs are filmed in long takes without alot of cutting in the monolouge. Thumbs up for that.
I know this is an old thread Scott, but one thing i noticed the other day when i was doing some testing is that the flatter profiles seemed to have a little more trouble grabbing focus than others. So, i decided to make a high contrast profile, just for grins, and it started grabbing a little faster. I guess it makes sense with contrast detection. In manual mode the higher contrast really brought out more of the focus peaking as well.
I wanted to share my GH5 settings. I love it. Speed +5 Sensitivity 0. Dial at AFC instead of AFS/AFF. Set it to tracking focus. Touch your eye or nose. It will blow you away with how good it is.
Just tried it. It's not bad, and works decently still didn't focus nearly as fast as 1 area. Just my opinion. I appreciate your tips though, They were definitely better than some that I've seen for sure.
AFC continuous focus (stills) overridden by movie continuous focus ON. AFS/AFF autofocus single/ autofocus flexible, the letter detects movement of the subject and compensates MF manual focus, will override movie continuous focus and stop it working
6 years later, and I am still loving the GH5 series. I have the GH5 II and the GH5S and while I am saving up to add the G9 II to the mix, I find the GH5 cameras plenty good enough for my needs. Weight made me give the GH6 a miss, but the G9 II is everything that I wanted. Meanwhile, three cheers to the GH5 super-heroes.
The GH5 is still a great quality camera. The only reason I'd tell someone not to get it these days is all about Autofocus. The Sony and Canon autofocus systems on their cameras these days are incredible and beyond useful. Most people that I see create content with GH5's still have a LOT of times where they are missing focus and to me that's a big factor.
Nice work. Although, you and most others go quickly to the six types of AF without telling us where to find them in the menu. Um, why? I have found them now and then, hunt and peck.
I have a G85 and I have had no issues with autofocus. I use single area for pretty much everything. The only time I've found facedetect useful is for heavily backlit stills, where it usefully can affect metering.
Hi Extremely good info video. 5 years down the time which camera of Panasonic supprts Auto Focus in slow motion like 120fps and 189fps. Couldn't find this info on UA-cam Regards.
Great video. Please tell me why you use the M.Zuiko lenses? Why not the Panasonics? Especially the Panasonics with version 2 IS. I ask because because I want to buy this camera and a few lenses. I will start off doing mostly stills and the Olympus M.Zuikos 7-14, 12-40 and 40-150mm have been on my list. Anyway, thanks for doing the video and nice Man Cave Studio.... Maybe never mind... I just started watching your other video about getting all your new gear.
Richard Cabezza I chose the M Zuiko for two main reasons. Build quality on the lenses are outstanding. They feel solid and look great. The Panasonic lenses look and feel cheap to. They look like plastic kit lenses which I wasn't a fan of at all. Most importantly, the M Zuiko lenses have a manual focus clutch which allows true manual focus unlike the focus by wire on all other lenses like Panasonic. That's a huge deal to me.
Paul Lowry really glad this helped you. I think with a firmware update, it's going to get even better but this is a huge improvement. Thanks for watching.
Why is my Quick AF option (Focus section of the menu) is grayed out? Same goes for Eye sensor AF option.... also same with (camera menu section) AF Custom Settings (video) option.... Any hint ???
Thanks for this!! You convinced me that I DO NOT want the GH5. What you refer to as grabbing focus pretty quickly is not much different than the slooooow focus I get with my old GX7. Maybe Pana should open their minds to phase detection.
Great video! Thank you for sharing! Is there a reason you don't max out focus sensitivity to 2+ for vlogging and instead keep at only +1 ? Also..I don't see in the info but what lenses are you using for vlogging? I have the Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 pro and Panasonic 15mm f1.7.. Thank you!
When the AF is set to fast and sensitive, it pulses more and more. So I like it slower. I use the Panasonic 7-14 for vlogging. I had the Olympus 7-14 first but it was a little heavy for vlogging
Scott McKenna also check out this af tracking test with the new panasonic g9 (seems the fastest most efficient af tracking I’ve seen so far with a panasonic camera (think it’s better than gh5 and possibly has more af points plus extra image stagnation etc) & this is using a older slower to focus lens and af sensitivity at default so imagine how it will be with af sensitivity increased and with a newer lens model etc).. ua-cam.com/video/q7oNPIFQxI4/v-deo.html
Bought few days ago the GH5, without watching reviews. Disappointed with AF (You really think that AF will improve with firmware later?) Should I get the A6500? Mostly shooting cars, motorcycles in fast motion. Thank You.
+VG Production hey my friend. Sorry you’re bummed with the camera. The GH5 is a tremendous camera but definitely not for autofocus. If you’re shooting fast cars and motorcycles, unfortunately this isn’t the best camera for you. The a6500 would be better for that. Just my honest opinion.
Nice video. I too have had the most success using the 1-Area mode. Another useful feature in this mode is that you can control the position of that focus area on the screen by use of the little joystick on the back, whilst you are shooting. Handy if the bride moves slightly but you don't want to recompose the shot. I'm still struggling with knowing what settings to use for continuous autofocus where the bride and groom are walking towards you.
Hi Scott, thanks for the great video, i make low cost Real Estate Video Walkthrough and we currently use the Lumix G5 that is an old camera. And now in 2017 we want to use a better camera to improve the image quality of our Real Estate Videos and I am undecided between the Panasonic GH5 and the Fujifilm X-T2. Which camera do you think that is better between the new GH5 and the Fuji XT-2 for the type of videos that we do. One important factor to me is that i need to spend the less amount of time possible doing Color Correction, Is true that the video footage from the XT-2 require less time in the computer doing color correction than the GH5 video footage ? Sorry for my english I'm using google translator. Regards,
I've never used the Fuji XT-2 so I can't give you an accurate comparison. I will say that the GH5 is a fantastic camera (as I say all the time and it's the reason I have 3 of them). Outstanding quality, and capable of great image straight out of camera. I think you'd be very happy with the camera.
Hi scott, I've just bought a GH5, loving it so far but I have a question regarding autofocus. I'm using the 12-40 olympus lens with manual clutch. Is there any way to also work with MF+AF like you've showed in this video or not? I guess all autofocus settings stop working when you use the manual clutch?
Hello Scott, greetings from Thessaloniki Greece ! I have noticed that when i am in 4k 50 fps mode, the autofocus works way better/faster (but on FHD not). What is your opinion ? (my configuration too : GH5 WITH 7-14 Olympus Zuiko Pro) - When i use my GH5 or my older GH4 with the speedbooster from metabones i have no autofocus at all with my 70-200 2.8 Canon or my Sigma 18-35 . Thank you and keep the good work ! Aris
I set all the settings as you said (1-Area, +5, -1) in my gh5, and I also tried various other combos, all with rear dial set to AFC, yet Continuous AF works with NONE of those combos (yours included), UNLESS Quick AF is enabled (set to ON). HOWEVER, Continuous AF DOES work with ALL combos, including and excluding your settings, EVEN with Face/Eye Detection and Tracking, as long as Quick AF is enabled. From what I’m seeing, Continuous AF works, if, and only if Quick AF is On - regardless of the settings suggested in this video. Furthermore, when Quick AF is on, the Continuous AF seems to work ok to pretty well - but far from the terrible or non-existent AF that exists withOUT Quick AF enabled/On. Anyone have any feedback on this or explain what I’m missing? Thanks!
Hi Ryan, I'm in a huge dilemma. I am a filmmaker who is dedicated to making documentaries and short films. I currently have an a6300, and I need a second camera. I would not bother to work a little more to match the colors of my a6300 with a gh5 thinking that it has different features like an excellent slow motion camera or unlimited recording, but perhaps it is a better idea to buy an a6500 to have a complete match. What do you recommend me Since you have both thank you very much (Excuse my English, it is not my native language)
Scott McKenna this has been working. Best settings I have used so far! Still hoping for more improvement on a software update this summer. Fingers crossed.
Good video Scott! I prefer to use manual focus because the focus peaking feature is AWESOME! I will test out your settings and let you know if they work. I'm currently using the Leica 12-60 but that Olympus 25mm is sounding great.
AFS+MF lets you do both. Unlike an Olympus back, the Peaking won't stay on during AF, only MF. The Leica will DFD but the Olympus won't. It's still pretty quick but if you're shooting movie they can dither a little bit as they follow focus. The Leica 25 is so sharp it will cut your fingers but my Panny 20 gets more work. Some folks like the softer Olympus lenses for portraits.
Compare it to the Leica 25/F1.4, chalk and cheese. Saying that, I sold the 25 f/1.4 as I prefer the Panny 20/F1.7 and was not using the Leica. Both being "standard" lenses (diagonal=21.7mm) and if you delve into its firmware it is also a Leica. It does DFD and will Dual-IS. The Ollie 45/F1.8 on the other hand is a great telephoto head and shoulders portrait lens. Moving further back with a longer lens (than say a 70 on FF) gives a shallower DoF for mft.
Thank you for this. It may be the simplest and therefore best discussion of the issue. One thing I would like for Olympus and GH5 is how to lock that one point in the middle and know it is going to stay where you put it and not be too easily and inadvertently moved. Thanks. Bob
Could you make a short video showing your Wedding kit and other lenses. A comparison of the same distance to an object using these primes and zoom lenses. Also showing your distance to your object from the side. Maybe also with an IPhone to compare. That could be nice and show what a 25mm Olympus/Panasonic looks like on a GH4 and GH5 compared to the other lenses like a 45mm. 😊 Compare all your lenses 👍😊
I don't use continuous AF for situations in which the subject is at a constant distance from the camera. I like to use the camera to get focus, and then turn off AF. This way I can reframe the subject without the concern that the camera will decide to focus on something else. A good example is when I am shooting a subject, and then an object or person moves behind my subject. I do not want the camera to change the focus to the object behind. IMO, in most situations you do NOT want the camera to continuously auto focus. If you do, then many times you will be disappointed with the results.
Good video mate. On my FZ200 I've set auto focus to 'flexible' instead of 'continuous'. Don't know if that is an option on the GH5, probably is. Continuous auto focus is too erratic, seems like a Panasonic thing. Same with average low light performance if I can believe the reports. Also like you I use 'area focus' but that is because the only other option is face detection which does not work well for vlogging. You can also adjust the size of the area focus from tiny spot to almost 2/3 of the screen. I snap all my pics using that square. Personally I think it doesn't reflect well on Panasonic that they have the same issues on their 2017 flagship camera as on their 2012 superzoom camera: focus and low light, especially the latter. Other than that it looks like an awesome camera to work with. You just want to love it.
Can you explain the difference between the physical BUTTON on the camera at the AFC position and having Continuous Focus set to ON in the camera menu? When do you need to switch between AFF/AFS and AFC modes, or are those more for still photography? The autofocus settings really confuse me on this camera.
+Tess Goodman AFC is continuous AF and the other is single point essentially, AFC is good for video. MF is manual focus obviously. In MF mode if you press in that button on the center of the dial, it’ll instantly autofocus to whatever the box is around and then when you let it go, it’s back in MF
Thanks, Scott. I had to turn on AF-On in the menu settings for the AF/AE button you mentioned on the dial for that to work, but that will come in handy, as I manually focus just about everything.
Hi, Can you post a high-res portrait shoot with 12-60mm kit Lens with the GH5. Planning to buy one!! Also if you could give a Raw file and JPEG for comparisons.
I think you need to change the title to "Continuous AF" fixed. I have been experimenting with settings, as well as reading other VLOGS about the subject and it is scary how people do not understand their cameras.
Great vidéo Scott ! Could you produce another video like this on the picture style settings that you use for shooting wedding videos ? Particularly on their customization. I used to be a Canon EOS 5D Mark III shooter, shooting prolost flat. Would similar settings work with the Panasonic GH5 ?
Makha Sy I'll put it on list and try to make it happen. In regards to picture profile settings right now I'm using cine like D and I customize the profile to -4 contrast; -5 sharpens, -3 saturation. Seems to be working well so far. I'll be switching to V Log soon but first I'm working with the profile to test it.
Harris Hardy Hakim there's no one perfect lens for weddings as you need a lot. If you can only afford one lens, then I would probably recommend something like the 12-35 2.8. It's a wide range to be able to use and has great stabilization for handheld use as well. If you can afford more than one lens, then I definitely recommend the 25mm 1.2 or 1.8. It's great for bride and groom prep and a nice look.
videoman1965 the a6500 is a great little camera for sure. Enjoy it.

I have problems with extended tele conv. Could that create difficult AF focus problems. There is a flimmer. Could that be because the camera is refocusing all the time. Is it nessesary to use manual focus with the extended tele conv. function The function becomes really powerful only with 1080 resolution
Lars-Åke Theorin honestly I've never used extended tale with the settings I've talked about. It's not a feature I use as of now. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I just don't want to give you an answer that's not correct.
I really appreciate that. Hopefully they feel very honest to you because that's what they are. This channel is all about learning together, and admitting things I"m working through and learning. Thanks for watching, keep checking out the new videos.
Scott McKenna great thanks. I'm very interested in the GH5. I'm just concerned about the auto focus, especially for Vloging. Everything else on it looks amazing especially for the price range. Thanks for the tips.
This is an old video at this point so a lot has changed since then. BUT with that said, I don’t like that new method, because I NEVER shoot in 30p. I only shoot 24, 60 or 120. So to me, it’s pointless.
mikel magdadaro I never owned the GH4 personally so I can't compare it. But with that said, using these settings laid out here, I've had great success.
@@gilosgarage No, when turning the dial betwin photo (M) and crative filming mode the picture profile changed automaticly. THAT is not possible with the GH5, or?
Nicely done Scott ;0) I have set my Fn6 button (on the front) to AF ON and this has the same effect as half pressing the shutter or pressing the AF LOCK. I use it all the time (having set the AF AE LOCK to exposure lock ;o) I would imagine that if you were VLOGing, having the button 'in your face' could be handy.
I really appreciate this content and I thank you for making this video. I will definitely give this a shot. But don't think think just at face value (no pun intended) it's a little ridiculous to have jump through hoops to find one setting that sorta works if you press a button and don't mind a little hunting? This is NOT directed at you. It's directed at Panny. This aspect of the camera was such a HUGE let down for me especially after Sean whats-his-face (their marketing guy) personally assured me the AF was going to be great...and now we are here just blowing by the whole "face tracking doesn't work for face tracking" as if that alone wasn't a hugely unacceptable thing. It's like having a car that won't go in reverse and the solution is to just always drive forward or hear people gripe about how "real professionals don't drive in reverse anyways." For a brand new camera flagship camera in 2017, it's just hugely disappointing to have to jump through so many hoops (use a setting it's not designed for, reset the AF speed and sensitivity, make sure you keep yourself in that box, press the back button if it's not working, and say a little prayer) just to film yourself... Again, this is not directed at you. I realize you are just sharing what has worked best for you and I appreciate that. I hope you are right about it just being a software thing...but then again, why wasn't that ready?!? Of course, it's my fault. I preordered based on early reviews I did not realize were all Lumix luminaries. In fact, I didn't even know that existed until photo Joseph (whose great) made sure he disclosed it every time he talked about the camera. Oh well, we live, we learn. I'm glad you like the camera.
I 100% agree I wish it worked even better out of box, not complaining there. The videos main purpose is to help find a better solution until they figure it out better.
I have noticed an improvement actually in the AF since the last firmware update. Check out my video on the GH5 if you can. Since then I've been using 1area AF with +1 speed with -3 responsiveness for locked on subjects and I just increase the responsiveness and speed (only up to +3) when I want it to change to a diff subject faster. It's actually not that bad once I use these settings. +5 speed I've noticed it pulses sometimes. I also change the gate to "release" priority vs focus priority. Believe it or not in talking with an engineer they said despite the fact this is primarily is a stills function, it DOES play a factor in video because these cameras only have 1 autofocus system. There isn't two autofocus systems in these cameras so making sure your camera is set to release vs focus means it will always let the camera shoot without regard to whether or not it's in focus. Meanin the camera doesn't have to "think" whether or not it's in focus before it moves on to the next subject. Now whether this affects real world use I haven't done enough testing yet, but it's def worth trying
I LOVE the features this camera offers - it would be perfect for me but the auto focus still kills it. Even your test from your check to face is deadly slow. Try that with any Sony. When they do get it right, I will get another one.
We Shoot Films sorry I can't be of help. No experience with that monitor. Make sure you have the newest firmware downloaded on the GH5, that's the only thing I can say to try.
Am I the only one who thought that the second, hand held camera did a REALLY crappy job of refocussing when it was moved around, from 6:10? It looked like it stayed focussed on his face and didn't change AT ALL.
Bobby Schandra if they are moving around very fast, I wouldn't try any haha. Unfortunately it's not fast enough to track a fast moving subject. I would put my aperture to f6 or higher and let it all be in focus.
One of my main uses is for auditions, so I want to be able to leave the auto focus on and I move a little in and out, my feet are typically planted but sometimes I walk into frame. I don't want to have the focus pull in and out in the middle of a performance, it's extremely distracting.
+Deanna Rashell if you shoot a lot of your own content and don’t have a camera operator, I wouldn’t trust the GH5 simple because of autofocus. That’s my only concern for you. It’s great for mostly everything else.
Scott McKenna Thanks, yeah I am the camera operator for my commercial shoots for now anyways and for my films I have somebody else operating their own camera. But I also use my camera for auditions and need a very strong autofocus but the gh5 has some other great options
It is a case of learn how to use you camera. I have used the GH4 for years and I concur that for movie you want 1-area, with "continuous focus" On in the movie menu. If we set it to MF it will not AF so it needs to be set to AFS. In movie mode the continuous focus is deliberately slower than AFC in stills to provide smoother transitions, AFC is overridden. Face Recognition and Tracking are for stills, Multi-Area lets it look at the entire screen, too complicated. Custom-Area will work however 1-Area is simpler to set and can easily be adjusted in size. Pinpoint is for stills with a long lens. However you are using Olympus lenses which will not utilise DFD and are therefore slower to respond and may hunt compared to Panasonic lenses. Basically you have crippled the focus system. Panasonic "HD" lenses are designed with silent motors for video, Olympus cameras are hard pressed to shoot video and none of their lenses are designed for it. Most of the pro wedding photographers around here switched from Canon to GH4 a couple of years ago. Mainly because they can shoot video and stills on the same camera, especially in low light where flash is not permitted.
I have Olympus lenses and I have no issues with AF, as I stated in this video. Thanks for all the info for the people watching, I appreciate your feedback.
We do tend to collect lenses. I have mostly Panasonic lenses, but both Panny and Ollie backs. There are subtle differences between the two lens systems and they are unfortunately diverging. The focus speed of an Ollie on a Panasonic is good but if the focus target is "difficult" a Panny lens will lock-on more reliably. The GH5 has Body-IS but without a Panny lens you cannot get Dual-IS which is probably good for another 1.5EV and of benefit hand holding video. Lens/camera choice will depend on scenario but it is important to understand the systems, their advantages and their limitations.
Marcus Sundman meaning everyone that has used them states they don't work. No point trying what no one has success with. I've tried them plenty since this video and they don't work. Thanks for chiming in though.
Well by far the best solution. I use it every day for vlogging, and I have always used it for tracking a bride down an aisle at a church, and it works without problems. As I stated in this video, it's not Canon or Sony AF, but it works fine if used properly. Thanks for watching.
Most pro wedding photographers around here traded up from the Canon to Panasonic GH4 some years ago; I expect they're trading up to GH5 now. Not only because they need to haul less gear but because they get better and more presentable pictures in all lighting conditions, stills and video. Once you understand it, the auto focus on a Panny can be as good or better than a Canikon. Sony AF has its own problems, you may have to resort to opening the iris to focus and stopping back down again. And then there is the lack of good Sony lenses.
Test it for yourself. What do you think?
The A7Sii gets a DXO low light score of 2993
The GH5 gets a a DXO low light score of 807 but if "uncorrected" it, that becomes 3212 - oops!
Which confirms my own real world low light tests comparing the GH4 to the Nikon D600, the Panny blows the socks off it, the D600 can't even autofocus in low light
Have you seen this video which supposedly outlines how to improve the GH5 autofocus? Check it out ua-cam.com/video/iGMY4YRTk0E/v-deo.html
Yes, autofocus works just fine for us. We shoot a daily show and sometimes run without a camera operator.
Cheers!
Real World Endo outstanding advice and tips. Thanks for sharing it with the other viewers.
Subbed. Some creative thinking and a bit of faith in future firmware updates are just what the doctor ordered.
laughingboy9000 don't have buyers remorse. It's an outstanding camera and you'll love it. Thanks for subscribing.
my thoughts exactly. the new firmware updates are confirming this in 2023
I don't know if anyone has told you, but I really enjoy that you do your vlogs are filmed in long takes without alot of cutting in the monolouge. Thumbs up for that.
I try my best. Thanks.
Hmm...testing it right now. I will see what I think.
Just tried it. It's not bad, and works decently still didn't focus nearly as fast as 1 area. Just my opinion. I appreciate your tips though, They were definitely better than some that I've seen for sure.
Nathan P. What is the difference on these focus settings? AFC and AFS/AFE
AFC continuous focus (stills) overridden by movie continuous focus ON.
AFS/AFF autofocus single/ autofocus flexible, the letter detects movement of the subject and compensates
MF manual focus, will override movie continuous focus and stop it working
Jeff Slade
It seems like he continues on overrides both AFC and AFS/AFF
Just to be clear:
You are using "Continuous AF = ON" in the menu with mode dial at Creative Video Mode?
Duuude yeah that manual part at the end is a very nice feature! Thanks for sharing 😊
Apple99er absolutely.
Lyndon Smith yes single area is key.
Excellent! Subscribed just on the strength of this, great relaxed and honest style ! Thanks 🙏
Hi
Extremely good info video.
5 years down the time which camera of Panasonic supprts Auto Focus in slow motion like 120fps and 189fps.
Couldn't find this info on UA-cam
Regards.
Good man, I'm liking your content man. Keep up the good work and your subscribers will grow in no time.
Forayem TV thanks for checking it out.
Great practical example of how to use the autofocus system. I have been wondering about whether or not to purchase and you have just made my mind up
Paul Lowry really glad this helped you.
+Jeff Tight I agree phase detection would be nice. Not sure why it’s not there.
Scott McKenna thank you
Scott McKenna also check out this af tracking test with the new panasonic g9 (seems the fastest most efficient af tracking I’ve seen so far with a panasonic camera (think it’s better than gh5 and possibly has more af points plus extra image stagnation etc) & this is using a older slower to focus lens and af sensitivity at default so imagine how it will be with af sensitivity increased and with a newer lens model etc).. ua-cam.com/video/q7oNPIFQxI4/v-deo.html
Bought few days ago the GH5, without watching reviews. Disappointed with AF (You really think that AF will improve with firmware later?)
Should I get the A6500?
Yup. I use that all the time. Works great. Thanks for chiming it, glad you're having success with that also.
I agree it's a great camera. The autofocus is not that bad and it's only going to get better. I like what you've done here.
John Pszeniczny -MPT- I agree. Thanks for checking out the video.
Great video what kind of Mic are using? its amazing
Thanks for the kind words. I'm using a Countryman B3 Lav mic.
You have to have the lens not on manual clutch for the push button to work.
Damn! how are you working with manual focus? you switch between clutch and fly by wire with autofocus depending on situation?
Hello Scott, greetings from Thessaloniki Greece ! I have noticed that when i am in 4k 50 fps mode, the autofocus works way better/faster (but on FHD not). What is your opinion ? (my configuration too : GH5 WITH 7-14 Olympus Zuiko Pro)
- When i use my GH5 or my older GH4 with the speedbooster from metabones i have no autofocus at all with my 70-200 2.8 Canon or my Sigma 18-35 . Thank you and keep the good work ! Aris
The Autofocus isn’t good on the GH5 no matter what. It’s just luck if it works good sometimes and not others.
What do you recommend me Since you have both
thank you very much
(Excuse my English, it is not my native language)
Diego Alvarado buy a gh5. It's an outstanding camera and you won't be disappointed.
This is great! I have had the GH5 since late March and have tried a lot of settings. I will give this a go. Subbed. Cheers!
HarvyDanger Films thanks for watching. Hope it helps. Report back.
Scott McKenna definitely will. Thanks!
Scott McKenna this has been working. Best settings I have used so far! Still hoping for more improvement on a software update this summer. Fingers crossed.
Very helpful! Thank you, Scott!
this channel is so underrated
Baesthetic thanks my friend. That's a kind comment. Appreciate you being here.
Hell yeah! Works great, I wish I had known this earlier, but good to know. Thanks for the tip!
Robby Huang awesome to hear. I agree it works great.
I can't get the AF/AE Lock button to work while it's recording though, is there some setting I need to change?
Robby Huang I don't remember changing a setting for it to work but I'll see if I changed something.
Good video Scott! I prefer to use manual focus because the focus peaking feature is AWESOME! I will test out your settings and let you know if they work. I'm currently using the Leica 12-60 but that Olympus 25mm is sounding great.
I love the Olympus 25, it's a great lens for sure. Let me know how the AF settings work for you.
Do you have a video that would show us how to go go into our gh5’s to set this up?
I want to use this camera for wave videography and filming surfers in a 4k 60 fps. will the autofocus issue be a deal breaker?
Brent Weldon for that type of autofocus with so much movement, I wouldn't rely on the autofocus with any camera. I would do manual focus.
Awesome i ended up going with the sony A7sii and love it
if you have any tips or tricks for me to tryout would love to any knowledge
Sweet man, enjoy it. It's a great camera.
Thank you for this. It may be the simplest and therefore best discussion of the issue. One thing I would like for Olympus and GH5 is how to lock that one point in the middle and know it is going to stay where you put it and not be too easily and inadvertently moved. Thanks.
Bob
bobfleckcreative agreed. We will see what happens with the new firmware update coming in a couple weeks.
What do you think of the latest GH5, GH5s firmware 2018 update? I shoot in manual focus only but am thinking of auto focus for some applications.
I have a video on it. Check my channel.
Compare all your lenses 👍😊
I don't use continuous AF for situations in which the subject is at a constant distance from the camera. I like to use the camera to get focus, and then turn off AF. This way I can reframe the subject without the concern that the camera will decide to focus on something else. A good example is when I am shooting a subject, and then an object or person moves behind my subject. I do not want the camera to change the focus to the object behind. IMO, in most situations you do NOT want the camera to continuously auto focus. If you do, then many times you will be disappointed with the results.
Agreed. I use manual focus on all projects that I’m filming. The only time I use AF is when I’m vlogging occasionally.
Hey thanks for the Tutorial !
Question about GH5 - I can't use the auto focus in the VFR mode (196fps) - is there any way to make it work?
do you have any interference issues with the Rode video mic pro? I had to sell mine
Arber Baqaj interference? No. What are you getting interference from?
Great video thanks for sharing!
thanks for watching
Also turn ON Quick AF (especially for video)
+Tess Goodman it’s super useful for sure.
Hi, Can you post a high-res portrait shoot with 12-60mm kit Lens with the GH5. Planning to buy one!! Also if you could give a Raw file and JPEG for comparisons.
Jagdish Limbachiya I don't do photography, sorry I can't be of help.
I think you need to change the title to "Continuous AF" fixed. I have been experimenting with settings, as well as reading other VLOGS about the subject and it is scary how people do not understand their cameras.
Sorry for the confusion. It's just supposed to help people with autofocus, not trying to be over technical. Appreciate you watching.
I need a better mike for my GH5. Which Rhode mike are you using on yours pls?
Sorry for my delayed content, I missed this awhile back. I use the Video Mic Pro. It's great. Check it out and all my gear on my kit page.
Scott McKenna Thank you already
Hi. Could you please recommend the best or must have lenses (GH5) for wedding video shoot. Thank you.
Thank you for our recommendation.
Hi Scott enjoy your videos i picked up a A6500 instead and like it heard some good things about the features of this camera .
videoman1965 the a6500 is a great little camera for sure.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, I just don't want to give you an answer that's not correct.
how is the autofocus on VFR? 60fps?120fps?
what do you think of the yoda focus fix ? Would you add it to your tips ?
No good if shooting 24fps. So to me it’s useless.
Would you go for the Sony X70, Panasonic UX90 or the Panasonic GH5? Why?
I own the GH5, so that's my choice. You can watch a couple of my other videos explaining all the reasons. It's a great camera and perfect for me.
very nice video.. I've seen many videos but yours are something different in a better way...
I really appreciate that. Hopefully they feel very honest to you because that's what they are. This channel is all about learning together, and admitting things I"m working through and learning. Thanks for watching, keep checking out the new videos.
Are the lenses your using dust and weather proof?
All the lenses I use have weather sealing yes.
Scott McKenna great thanks. I'm very interested in the GH5. I'm just concerned about the auto focus, especially for Vloging. Everything else on it looks amazing especially for the price range. Thanks for the tips.
Spaldam's Adventures watch all my vlogs. Any of them. You'll see I don't have any af issues.
Hey God bless you thank you for all the video , what picture profile you use? Thank
Check out my video titled my gh5 settings. Thanks.
Hey Scott...do you have continuous auto focus set to on or off?
On
Top man
As I noticed even Sony has problems with autofocus as I observed at vlogs from famous Sony using UA-camrs
Yup. No one has it perfect.
ya they have the firmware for this issue now but not for the g85 :( so sad...
It looks like you were at 24p, yes? Have you tried the new technique using 30p at 179d or 1/60 sec? It's way faster than what you show here.
This is an old video at this point so a lot has changed since then. BUT with that said, I don’t like that new method, because I NEVER shoot in 30p. I only shoot 24, 60 or 120. So to me, it’s pointless.
awesome, i sold my gh4 due to focus breathing... how's the focus breathing with the gh5???
mikel magdadaro I never owned the GH4 personally so I can't compare it. But with that said, using these settings laid out here, I've had great success.
awesome... i wanna try this... shame i sold my gh4 lenses due to the focusing
oh and the lowlight capability
mikel magdadaro yes the low light on the Gh4 wasn't good at all from what I read. I think the gh5 does a great job for what I need.
really cool review
Thanks for watching.
How do i set the photo style to be cine d in filming mode and natural in photomode? Seems like that wont work. It did work on the GH4.
Not sure honestly. It's annoying I know
Custom button?
@@gilosgarage No, when turning the dial betwin photo (M) and crative filming mode the picture profile changed automaticly. THAT is not possible with the GH5, or?
What aperture did you use for the tracking test?
Chester Bay that lens is f2.8. That's what I used. At 7mm (14mm equivalent)
Nicely done Scott ;0)
I have set my Fn6 button (on the front) to AF ON and this has the same effect as half pressing the shutter or pressing the AF LOCK. I use it all the time (having set the AF AE LOCK to exposure lock ;o)
I would imagine that if you were VLOGing, having the button 'in your face' could be handy.
Jon Pilling great point. I may try that. Thanks for sharing.
How big should your box be for 1 area?
I make it fairly small
Thank you Scott McKenna
Glad it was helpful.
Excellent video About GH5 focusing issue. Thanks for your presentation. I appreciate.
I appreciate you checking it out. Thanks. Subscribe if you haven't already, I'm a huge GH5 fan and I have lots of content about it.
It's like having a car that won't go in reverse and the solution is to just always drive forward or hear people gripe about how "real professionals don't drive in reverse anyways."
For a brand new camera flagship camera in 2017, it's just hugely disappointing to have to jump through so many hoops (use a setting it's not designed for, reset the AF speed and sensitivity, make sure you keep yourself in that box, press the back button if it's not working, and say a little prayer) just to film yourself...
Yeah, I know. I appreciate that.
Thanks for for the feedback and being a part of the conversation. Appreciate you being here.
7-14mm olympus lens is manual Focus .I have one myself. How can than lens be used in an auto focus test ?
No it's not. It's a focus clutch. One is full manual, the other is not.
John Knowles a Cyclist understood. If autofocus is the most important feature, then it's not for you.
Tell me how I can change the AF sensitivty!
Great video man! Totally agree with everything you said!
Mike Caruso thanks Mike. I love the camera.
Scott, has Panasonic released the firmware update yet to hopefully address the autofocus issue?
Mike Caruso nothing yet.
I have the same Polaroid camera AND Brownie on display in my collection too!
Red Reef Media nice. I have tons of those types of old cameras. They are a nice touch.
thanks - nice video. agreed that this has to be fixable in firmware upg.
John Smalley I'm hoping so for sure
the GH6 has a "one area plus" that works great
As long as the autofocus works with the button, that's good enough for me
jermainesky me too.
My gh5 wont playback on my aputure vs5 monitor when i hit playback it shows tv ouput in progress
We Shoot Films sorry I can't be of help. No experience with that monitor. Make sure you have the newest firmware downloaded on the GH5, that's the only thing I can say to try.
does your monitor playback fine
We Shoot Films I don't use an external monitor when shooting with the GH5. Only the one on it.
thanks
Good stuff sir. Ty.
Thanks for watching.
Am I the only one who thought that the second, hand held camera did a REALLY crappy job of refocussing when it was moved around, from 6:10?
It looked like it stayed focussed on his face and didn't change AT ALL.
what setting would u try if the subject is moving around?
Bobby Schandra if they are moving around very fast, I wouldn't try any haha. Unfortunately it's not fast enough to track a fast moving subject. I would put my aperture to f6 or higher and let it all be in focus.
I can't get the "hybrid" focus system to work. When I have it in MF and half press the shutter it does not auto focus. Is there a setting I'm missing?
It can't be in MF.
Scott McKenna oh maybe I misubderstood you. But then when I have it in the other focus settings I can't manually focus...I'm very confused!
One of my main uses is for auditions, so I want to be able to leave the auto focus on and I move a little in and out, my feet are typically planted but sometimes I walk into frame. I don't want to have the focus pull in and out in the middle of a performance, it's extremely distracting.
+Deanna Rashell definitely don’t go GH5 then. Just not reliable enough.
Thanks, yea I'm really torn. I also shoot business videos and films so I know the GH5 would be great for those but....
Thank you for sharing. I am looking for my next cámera (¿D5, D6, GH5) and I found this info really helpfull. Thanks!!
So glad to hear. Check out the updated video on the AF.
Have you tried empty 225 area as well?
+Tomek Tomczuk yes. For photos it’s great but continuous AF not as much.
super nice video
igetsmart thanks my friend.
Lens/camera choice will depend on scenario but it is important to understand the systems, their advantages and their limitations.
can u do a Q&A or with DemiLovato or any one btw nice video
I'll do a Q&A sometime when people start to ask more questions. What do you want to know?
Scott McKenna when did u love music
What?!?! 6:10 - Yeah it grabbed your face, and nothing else, fucking useless.
The AF isn't perfect, I agree.
Very useful, thank you! :)
Glad it was helpful;
"There are 6 AF modes. I haven't really tried 5 of them, but the 1 I've always used works the best for sure."
WTF, dude!?!
Marcus Sundman meaning everyone that has used them states they don't work. No point trying what no one has success with. I've tried them plenty since this video and they don't work. Thanks for chiming in though.
It finds focus but only after a little back and forth 'pump' no good for what I do.
Agreed.
Thanks for this video
Well Scott, to me you've just illustrated the issue everyone was having. Not any kind of "solved" to my eyes. But thanks for the video!
And then there is the lack of good Sony lenses.
custom multi and select the focus area in the centre forming like a shape of a face
iDeal interesting technique. I'll try it out.
thank you! good info
Thanks for watching.
is the gh5 af the same with g85 ?
not really gh5 has more contrast detection point (225) and the g85 has 49 points
what he said
How big do you make the 1-area square?
John Packard small
As small as it will go, or two or three clicks larger with the back wheel?
not as small, but basically where the square takes up most of the face but not more than the face.
