    For the pasted 10 years I've owned and have been surf fishing using Penn reels and had nothing but problems with them and they're not smooth NIB or otherwise. I recently purchased a new BG 4000 and I'm blown away by what a pleasure it is to fish with this reel !! I can't believe how smooth and effortless the retrieve is on this reel and the gears are as smooth as glass. Yes ! The Daiwa BG IS DURABLE AND SIMPLISTIC & MAINTAINABLE !!!!!!!! I viewed the mechanical breakdown of this BG reel on Tackle Advisors the pinon gear is seated and reinforced with a ball bearing inside the housing of the reel & the crosswind gear is seated and reinforced on a ball bearing and the gears are reinforced two with stabilizer bars, no other reel company puts a reel out there like this for such a low price as the BG. Don't be fooled by the price tag because as inexpensive as this reel is Daiwa didn't cut any corners building these BG reels and they're not a cheaply designed product, this reel could have easily been three times the price that Daiwa is asking for, and no reel company on the market can sell a reel like this with such a low price tag attached to it ! This new Daiwa BG spinning reel a quality mechanically crafted marvel. My next two reels will be the BG 5000 & 4500 reels when I fish the ocean on the surf this fall.

      I got the Black Gold 4500 because of the twin anti reverse. It's smooth. You get plastic body if you buy Shimano of the same price and single anti reverse bearing can get destroy by big fish.
      The old BG is a cult favourite. But wobble. The famous copy is Banax SX( Korean made ) series. Very good detail. Better than Shimano. Cannot better than Daiwa, coz it's a Dauwa BG copy. A cult favourite too. So robust that almost every fishermen in Malaysia have them !!!

    Nothing against the reel, I love mine with a passion, but I wouldn’t recommend people treating it like a Van Staal. It doesn’t have corrosion resistant bearings in it and it doesn’t have Daiwa’s seals like a Saltist so if you do dunk it and reel it underwater like that I highly highly recommend taking it apart, spraying some solvent in there to clean it out, and adding new grease and oil. It’s just not designed to be dunked like that so I hope people don’t think it’ll last very long if treated like a fully sealed reel!

    I have a BG 4500 for last 4 years. Love it. I recently landed a 6’ blacktip with it. Wasn’t worried about the drag at all. More worried about the leader! Lately I wanted a bigger reel and got the BG 5000 and now I have a couple great beach surf reels and I am very happy. My wife is happy because the 4500 is now her go to and we scrapped her old cheap Walmart reel and she loves the SMOOTH action on the 4500.

    The Japanese Shimano models (Stradic SW - 2018) are by far the best reels in my opinion but bang for the buck, the BG is where its at. Personally, I kayak fish and all of my reels are always getting blasted by surf. Both these reels have stood up well with a simple freshwater wash from the get go.

    Excellent review, I have friends that I surf fish with and have no complaint about this new BG reel and for the price you can't go wrong. I've read comments in response to your review relating to the Penn Battle series reels that have grinding gears and failed after catching one fish. I caught over 50 Bluefish in one outing alone in less than 2 hrs and probably caught over 1000 Bluefish this past spring run and all these fish ran BTWN 12 and 20 LBS each using plugs and tins off the surf using my Conflict 5000 that has the same gears as the Battle II and I've hard fished the Battle series reels for the past 5 years and the only problem with the Penn Battle and V reels are that the gears are made of die cast aluminum and they lose there smoothness in a shot period of time of use but they never failed me yet. My friend that I fished with all spring long was using his Penn Sargus 6000 on different outings the same reel that I saw him land a 50 pound bass snagging bunker off the beach in Jun of 2011, he also uses an old model BG that's indestructible from time to time using mono on it and he has the new 5000 BG model loaded with 17 LB Nanofil and from my observation the BG reels are great. I'm tempted to purchases a new BG but I have enough fishing gear and I can't fish them all at once. {Great Product Review ! }

    I have been using my trusty BG 60 since the mid 80's and it has never let me down. I now have two spare spools with different line classes depending on what I am fishing for.
    For me the only issue was a line holder so, on one spool I have drilled a small hole in the lip and on the others I have a 1/2" piece of elastic cloth that I have sown.
    Very interested is seeing these new reels in the flesh.

    BG is a killer especially from a boat. Ranks easily with the Penn Battle.
    Do you fish beaches or flats?
    The Daiwa SS Tournament series has no equal until you spend 4-6 times more money. Around $100.00 new in four sizes.
    A surf and flats equivalent to the BG.
    No reel is tougher but it outcasts everything until you spend $500.00 plus. Drag is fantastic.
    I have used it alot on bones, tarpon , Permit and even some sails. Add smoothies if you chase pelagic fish.
    Again, my clients can't break it.
    Really a fantastic review and you make some important points about how much performance you can get at a reasonable price.
    Cheers!

  • @wvXvxvXvw
    @wvXvxvXvw 5 років тому

    The new BG reels are great. They are smoother than the old ones, and have instant anti-reverse unlike the old ones. However, I would have to recommend the BG Classics(they still sell them, between $99 and $150) if you do much inshore/beach/deep water fishing. I love instant anti-reverse. It makes hook sets better, is smoother and has less chance of a line snapping because of handle slap. That has actually never happened to me but I have heard people say it happened to them. That said, instant anti-reverse really hates saltwater, sand and grit. The roller bearing that makes anti-reverse work is extremely delicate and has no tolerance to any debris being introduced to it. Also, once it does get grit/sand/salt in it, it will never be as tight again. It will work, and it will still feel good, but it will not be as good as it was. The old BG Classic can be used under water, not be cleaned and work for the next 20 years. The only failure that one of my BG Classics had was an anti-reverse spring rust. That reel was 20 years old. A new spring, and its back to new. I personally would spend the extra few bucks on the BG Classic if long term reliability in saltwater is what you are after.
    One reel that has surprised and blown me away is my little Pfleuger President ultralight. I have now had it for a decade, used it everywhere from Pensacola(it was able to handle a 6lb sheephead from a pier) to Savannah(hundreds of trout) to the Tennessee River(last week, a dozen or so 4-6lb catfish in the current) and have never even opened it up. It has gone through 3 rods, because I way over stress them with the size fish I use it for, and ran nothing but braid since it was new. It was dunked under saltwater in Pensacola when I fell off of the walkway of the bridge and was dropped in a harbor in Savannah when I let a little boy reel in a croaker with it. I actually have a few videos on here of me using it about a decade ago catching 20+lb catfish from our pond. That is a reel that I will never let go.

      The daiwa bg is a much better reel apart from the sealing, penns are pretty overrated for what they are

      @@Nofishnoclue thats just not true, the gears in the spinfisher are made from better materials and cnc'd one at a time. in addition to being sealed, its an all around better reel. BG is still amazing at the price point

      @@ianundercover6295 although the gear material is of a higher quality in the spinfisher the daiwa bgs gear is much larger for similar sized reels resulting in a much smoother experience with more cranking power at the anglers disposal, I own a spin Fisher vi among many other Penn reels and the spinfisher is one of the better ones, but honestly I think the bg is better for general use, the Penn has its place, but like I said the penns are overrated, Americans treat slammers and spinfishers like gold when really the are just quality reels, with issues of there own

    I would like to know what is the difference between the BG and the Saltist? They both have the same performance. The only difference that I can see on paper is ball bearings, but the Saltist is quite a bit more expensive. Based on the 4500 size, the BG goes for $120 while the Saltist goes for $230.

    I fish for minnows with a shimano stella 10000 paired with a Phenix Black diamond rod and 100 pound braid. For my shark setup i use a zebco dock demon with 8 pound mono.

    I still fish with my 1976 Daiwa Silver Series 7000C and love it. The BG came after the silver series and the only substantive difference to me between the silver and the early BG is the color. I have been interested in the new Tsunami reels with all the seals but between your review and Tackle Adviser’s I’m leaning toward the BG. By the way I also use a RG 5000 Daiwa that still fishes very well. My best Daiwa is an Emblem X 5500T long-cast reel since I am a surf fisherman. Most of the reels I fish with are vintage being 45 yrs. old or older. Anyway, thanks for this. Fist tackle video I’ve seen of yours. Love your enthusiasm!

    Thanks for the review man! I'm new to this saltwater fishing. Been looking for a new reel. Was between this and a spinfisher. Only fished from piers. Ready to go down to the surf for bigger sharks and whatever else I can hook into. Can you do a video on what is the best type of braid and rod for this reel?

    No way affiliated with the company and yet sells pitch is better than the Daiwa sales rep. Nice job.

    Nice vid, I just bought a Stradic ci4+ for a trip down to S.C(from Boston) for redfish, I already own a penn battle 2(4000) for light schoolie striper fishing in Maine. In your opinion should I take the Stradic back and pick up a BG and have money left over for another reel of my choice, or stick with the Stradic because it’s worth it?
