Hi, Alex. That’s was a clearly presented review of the speed editor. I’ve had mine for about a year and, after some initial trepidation, now use it to probably 50% of its potential. Like you, I edit out ‘ums’ and ‘errs’ out of respect for the subject person. I always found it necessary to jump back into the edit page to be able to clearly see the waveform. I had no idea that the volume could be adjusted from the deck. With regard to the camera buttons, I just saw these as barren landscape. However, now I have a second camera I now know that I can use at least one of these. I also use a Stream Deck Mini, so it would be ideal if I could assign some shortcuts to the unused keys. I can honestly say that I learned something today that will save me even more time. One negative point I would like to make is that of it not having a power switch. When loading Resolve I tap random keys to make the SE wake up, so no problem there. My issue is that if I have a three hour UA-cam upload the SE remains switched on and using power. Ideally, I would like to see the ability to toggle the power off.

Just a short update. Since viewing this I’m now using the speed editor 75% of the time, so thanks again!

They should allow us to remap the multi cam buttons to some other tools

Totally agree. I wonder if they could work normally as multi cam keys unless you hold down another key which acts as a modifier. Feels like it should be possible and then if you have a favourite tool in Davinci Resolve you can programme it to a key without undermining the consistency of the rest of the speed editor.

No! No MK2, just update the software, I would love for the camera angles to also be mapped to the video tracks (using numbers?) because I love using the cut page but if you have stuff on other tracks it becomes a pain to edit them, so instead of just having synched clips may be an option to choose which video track you are editing on the cut timeline. Also, the scroll wheel seems to have a click function that is not being used, this has to be something worth utilising.

I could have paid $A500 for the Studio version. Instead, I bought the Speed Editor for around $A600 and got the Studio version licence included. WIN, WIN. Yes, it could have been better designed, but its still incredibly useful and amazingly well built. Thanks Alex, I'm now getting even more value from it.

Good overview and points about the speed editor. I love using mine, mostly for first assembly cuts of projects on the cut page. Unfortunately, after that it's always the edit page and mouse and keyboard for me, as I think the more complex a timeline gets the less efficient it is to work on the cut page. But my biggest gripe with the Speed Editor is, that the fastet edit function is missing. I use "ripple start / end to playhead" all the time. I saw several instances in your showcase where that would have been the easiest and fastest option to trim down the videos. Holding down a key and using the wheel and having to be precise about it is so much of a time waster when you already are at the cut point and know anything before or after this point has to go. So I totally agree, having 9 camera angles hard coded on the unit is targeting such a small number of users where it could have been used so much better with features like ripple to playhead etc.

Completely agree. It’s not that slow, I was trying to go a little slower for the sake of the video but totally take your point. I use ripple start/end to play head all the time when not using the Speed Editor. Thanks for checking out the video and glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Sure thing. Wasn't meant as a critique of your editing style, it just perfectly showcased the short comings of the cut page / speed editor in that regard. There's just this irony of calling it speed editor while actually missing the fastest way to trim clips ^^

Excellent Video! Here is a Speed Editor MK2 Improvement idea: Flip the Trim-In and Trim-Out buttons. This way the left clip's Out (and right clip's In) is not opposite on the Speed Editor.

I love the source tape function! And the scroll wheel is great for precision. I am beginning to use two cameras, so I will learn to use the multicam buttons, but don’t see myself EVER needing NINE of them. It would be great if they were reprogramable.

Thanks for this. I haven't had a speed editor that long, bought one used. I have to say now that I've used it for a few months though I miss it when I don't have it mainly just for that wheel. That said, I still struggle with the cut page a little. I love the source tape for finding clips and chucking them in a timeline, but other than that I find myself wrestling with it compared to the edit page where I can just grab a load of clips and shunt them around. If I want a pause in an interview for example, and to allow some b-roll to play over the top, I end up just jumping into the edit page. That said even in the edit page, I often trim clips using the speed editors trim in/out and the wheel because it's just so much more refined. Slightly tricky combo at times.

Would love any tips on working in the cut page but actually being able to create gaps in your master interview as desired (for something that is interview based as so many of my projects are). Also how one might change the structure within the cut page with the speed editor, say you had something of a scene that feels better earlier on, how best to move that to earlier in the timeline for example.

    • @AlexCameron-Depiqd

Thanks so much for popping your thoughts down here. I think possibly you struggle with the Cut page as you’re already familiar with the Edit page and how that operates. Now that we can Toggle On and Off the ripple option of video track 1 you can simply move the clip up the timeline to create a gap (although frustratingly it seems you can’t use the Speed Editor move key to do this you have to do it with a mouse/keyboard). That does make it a little more useable. I try and think of the Cut Page (for my workflow) as part of the process generally. So it’s the place I go after Media to begin roughing things out and building select timelines etc. Doing some Multicam work before then heading to the Edit page for the heavy lifting. That said, simpler edits that require a fast turn around I’ve definitely enjoyed doing in the Cut Page.

Hey man, great tutorial! Is there a way to split the clip and automatically remove the gap when working on multiple tracks? For some reason, it doesn’t seem to work the same way as it does on a single track. Thanks!

Thanks for showing us how you use the Speed Editor. I, perhaps unfortunately, learnt Resolve using the Edit page and am struggling to enjoy the Speed Editor. There definitely needs to be a button re-mapping facility (it's available for the standard keyboard) and I think that would make it more use in both the cut and edit pages. If they updated it would I upgrade? Currently no, but I am trying to work more in the cut page so maybe I'll begin to appreciate it more.

I often edit multiple cameras, and once I found myself using almost all of them.. and I wondered what would I have done if cameras had been more :' )
For me is an important part of the Speed Editor, but yes... there should probably be a customizability option, so we could re-assign to other functions when we have only one camera ^^

Thanks Alex, great tutorial on the Speed Editor. It's on my wishlist as I don't yet have Resolve Studio. I have yet to even use a Speed Editor, however it looks well built, on par with my ATEM MIini Pro switcher.
The Elgato Speed Editor, hmm yes please. Remapping or alt functions for some areas like cams would be interesting. More options more flexibility. Maybe Blackmagic does different versions for basic and advanced.

You mentioned at point 7.08 sec that one can tap a key on the main keyboard to create a larger view of the audio track. For me as a Windows user, that looks like the key with the windows symbol, but you did it so fast that I didn't catch which key you were referring to. Could you clarify that for me? Thanks!

Hey! How's it going?! I have a big question, every time I press In to put a marker, DR inserts the marker exactly where my playhead is, but when I mark the Out, the marker is done one frame after the playhead, is there any way to correct that?
I think it was working properly before and I don't know what I pressed to change it (or I just never realized it was like that since the beginning hahaha).
    Thanks a lot!!!

Great video! At a minimum, the camera keys should have the ability to be remapped (on existing & future versions of SE) so that those of us not using cameras often--or at all--can utilize that real estate for other functions. Label machines are cheap.

Interesting video. I will have to watch it again, likely many more times. First, because I'm not very knowledgeable about editing and you move way too fast for me to catch your actions on the first viewing. Not just you. __ Trying to get familiar with your clip, which is not mine, which I'm seeing for the first time, listening to it's audio, which might be low volume, listening to your very minimal narration about what you are doing, and trying to see what keys you are striking, plus seeing what the effect is in the timeline - it is very difficult for me. I've said this before, and been told "my videos are made for somewhat more advanced users". OK, that's likely true and I accept that.
Still, I can't help but feel that a series of videos that really go through the basics *_slowly_* one speed editor section at a time would find an appreciative audience. For example the upper left 6 keys probably can do a lot. One video. Maybe might require a few other keys, that would be fine. Leave the multicam stuff for last, say video number 12...
Identify the problem, descibe the fix, demonstrate the fixing, show the result, maybe twice, and do it all fairly slowly. Nice slow narration. Short sentances.
If this is not for you, I understand. It's kind of what an old nerd like me needs, but maybe I'm a tiny minority of Speed Editor owners. Don't know. I fully endorse buying the full software and Editor bundle, I'm happy I did.

You win most valuable comment award! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. Totally take onboard that parts of the video were moving quite quick. I think there were two things in my mind: 1) I was trying to demonstrate that I was able to work very quickly (I actually slowed down a little believe it or not!) and 2) It was less of a tutorial this video and more of an overview and always conscious of how long a video is. I personally love doing the longer, slower more detailed stuff but aware that that isn’t always what people want. Really great to know that there are some real students out there who love to get as detailed as I do! 👍🏻
Out of interest, did you check out the other Speed Editor video I did a little while ago? It’s linked in the description and it’s a bit more detailed and involved as to all the keys and what they do etc.
      Thanks again for watching!

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd Not yet but will tonight. Documenting the movement of a large milling machine into a basement this morning. It’s broken into pieces, but still needs a small excavator to lay the heavy base body on its back and move that to the skidways to slide downstairs. Restrained by a winch attached to the Kubota. So, have editing to do! Yesterday, had to figure out speed changes on a clip. Why is the speed change item in Inspector greyed out but still works? How to do all clips at once? If you know …
