    I picked up a Speed editor last summer and been loving it so far . As a travel "UA-camr " the size and functionality of it is perfect for my needs and skill level . The fact that I can put it and all my editing gear in my 20L camera bag and set up in any cafe is a big advantage in my option ( which Im about to do right now ).

    I'm an experienced davinci editor and I was skeptical on buying the editor's keyboard for the same reasons. thank god I watched the video. the double tap fuctions, jog wheel and the layout are deal breakers so I've decided to go with the speed editor. thanks for the most sensible comparison

      i have both and i can tell you that i prefer the speed editor waaay over the keyboard. Its wireless, works like 15 hours on a single charge, connects automatically to my macbook on launch of davinci. the keyboard is just stupidbig, once you add color panel you will run out of space on the desk, the fact that its missing lights on the keyboard is insane, all the buttons and you cant see shit. One of the most important things that most overlook is that the speededitor was designed for cutpage which is way quicker to work with, and the keyboard is made for the edit page and i hate the keyboard wheel, its has an electronic brake which to me is completely useless but is the main reason why the keyboard can not be wireless..., oh and, who ever wants a regular keyboard, can just change the caps on the keyboard, its regular cherry switchcaps.

    I've used both, getting the speed editor first and then the keyboard later. I ended up returning the keyboard. Part of it is that the keys had a very metallic sound when they bottomed out and I shared an office at the time and the other part is that it took up way too much desk real-estate. I spend most of my PC time typing for school, editing photos in Adobe LrC and Photoshop, and then in my video editing programs - which is currently Camtasia, Descript, and Davinci Resolve. It's a lot easier to just take out the speed editor for the portion that I'm using Davinci for than to always have the keyboard cramping up my space

    I loved my Speed Editor, but I didn't have a dedicated editing workspace. Now that I do, I'm going to switch to the keyboard. I hate having to move my hands from one keyboard to another (I like being super efficient with my hand movements and find it disconcerting to keep re-situating my hands). I'll still keep the SE for when I'm on the road, but that's it.

    I used the editor key board for a couple of months, it was great. The only drawback I had was that it was not backlit, it was a big problem in my dark environment. Then suddenly one day, it stopped working. Pressing one key was typing something totally different. The whole keyboard was typing different things, other than the button that was pressed. Did a lot of research and it seems to be an hardware issue. It's lying in the box now, and I'm back to my old keyboard. Contemplating getting a Speed Editor. Does it work as good in the EDIT Page?

      @georgekamenov_  Рік тому +1

      Oh man, that sucks! Did you reach out to Blackmagic to tell them that happened? If you've only used it a couple of months it should still be under warranty right? As far as the Speed Editor, there are a few things that are different in the edit page vs the cut page but you can get used to it fairly quickly and I still think it's really cool. I've got a video talking about the speed editor a bit more in depth which you can check out.

    I bought the editor keyboard because of the jog/shuttle wheel. When I first learned video editing, back in the dark ages on the Sony BetaCam editing equipment, the jog/shuttle wheel was how you quickly got through the source tape. I found editing with a mouse to be a bit cumbersome. For me it was more like the editor I learned on and it was just more comfortable for me. When the speed editor first came out I got one too. It basically came with free studio DaVinci Reslove software for the same price as the software alone. It's always good to have a back up.

      @@michaelhornbek2983 Not constantly. I'll just usually have the speed editor in a drawer right next to my desk and when I'm going to be editing I pull it out and set it right in front of my keyboard which I push back a little bit so that I still have access to it. Then when I'm done with the cut page I'll typically move the speed editor to the side and bring the keyboard back to continue editing.

    There are many comments that I am not going to repeat concepts, I had both and a mini panel. I have used both and while the small keyboard is very nice to use, the feeling of editing with the large keyboard was different, better for me. I'm using the Jog options a lot and once you get used to them they are very useful and effective.Edit, making cuts with the Jog like the Sony one is crazy, I think it provides a creative point when making fades, it feels better. It's like driving a BMW. All this without detracting at all from the Speed Editor.

    I’ve been working in resolve for 3 years now. But I started with custom keybinds from another editor, 80% of the most used shortcuts are bound to my lefthand. I got the speed editor but even the speed editor makes editing less speedy for me because I can do everything with a mouse and keyboard a lot faster 😅. I was hoping the editor keyboard would fix that but I really can’t switch over to the default keybinds…

    I like the full size keyboard for the heavier scroll wheel. But they could really go much further and I would pay for it. There needs to be more keys that can be customized in my opinion. And backlighting! The lack of the double clicking options and special options seems like a miss too. Plus they could really benefit from more tools for clip positioning like y-pos. It would be awesome to see more keys like these.
    For keybinds, what I like to do is setup a second small keyboard, like a tarturus, for my own shortcuts. So the default shortcuts stay the same in Resolve, with the keyboard buttons being assigned to the original keybinds. So resolve stays the same, but the tarturus gets configured as I need.

    I'm just about to pull the trigger and buy the speed editor. I'm doing it because I'm mostly an Avid editor (because that is what 99% of the production companies that I work with, use), but I want to start using Resolve on my own projects. But since all my keyboard shortcuts and even the 'style' of my editing workflow, is very geared towards Avid, I feel like using the speed editor to get used to working in Resolve will help me to separate the muscle memory that I have for editing with Avid. I'm hoping that It will help me and my brain differentiate between the two programs, even though I'm ultimately doing the same job on both. The cut page is VERY different from the way I edit in Avid, so I think the speed editor should be a huge help in getting used to this faster but different workflow.

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, that might be a good way to approach getting more used to Resolve. The Speed Editor was built primarily for use in the cut page and once you get used to it it's actually pretty intuitive in there. Hoping you like it if you do pick one up. Could drop by the comment section and leave a comment sharing what you think once you've used it for a bit 🙂

    I jumped on the Speed Editor since it was wireless (perfect for mobility) and the kb was nearly $1000 at the time. First issue was getting it connected to my computer, then came the constant disconnecting, and then the coup d'état was it being designed for the cut page exclusively. Throw in other quirks like not having a power button and there's no doubt I've regretted this purchase and would be reluctant to purchase any other surface tool from DaVinci.

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  8 місяців тому +1

      I only had connection issues with it the first 2-3 times connecting it but since then it's been completely fine and auto connects with no issues. Technically it's not only for the cut page as it does work in the edit one as well, just behaves differently in certain situations. That said, since I got it, there have been a few projects with huge amounts of footage I've had to work on that would have been hell without the Speed Editor and the cut page. It has its quirks but I still think it's crazy useful once you get used to it. Also, you shouldn't really need a power button since it's only on when Resolve is. Otherwise you could just turn off Bluetooth before opening Resolve and it won't auto boot up.

    Thanks for the video, George. I've had the Speed Editor (SE) for two or three years and have found it does everything I need. I did consider the keyboard, but the SE came with Studio for no extra, so there was little contest. I also have a keyboard that I love. It took some time to learn the muscle memory, at least beyond Source/Timeline, Stop/Play, In/Out and Smart Insert. Is it worth the money? With Studio, no contest. It's not quite a bargain, but good value for money. Without? Borderline. The Jog/Shuttle has a lovely feel and makes me almost believe I'm a pro. It saves time, a fair bit in my case. I hardly used the Cut Page before. I start almost all videos on Cut now. It's a nice bit of kit and if you can afford it, then I'd recommend it. If you're on a tight budget, then consider very carefully.

      @@Resolve4u It depends on a lot of factors. Have you set up your own keybinds that you're used to? If yes, I would suggest the speed editor. But if you use the default Resolve binds the editor keyboard might be a better fit. It also really depends on how much you're willing to spend. The big keyboard gives you more functionality but it's also quite a bit more expensive. I personally found that the speed editor fits my workflow better. But that was only after I decided to try and learn how to use the cut page more. If I hadn't, I don't think I would have liked the speed editor as much. Also, like I mentioned in the video I did hand both keyboards off to editor friends for a few weeks at a time but neither of them came back with any of the buttons looking worn out or anything. @George Kamenov - Thanks for the video... it makes my decision easier. I always have problems with video editing programs because they don't conform to the usual standard when it comes to the behavior of the scroll wheel.
    (Scroll-Wheel up/down, Scroll-Wheel + Shift - left/right, Scroll-Wheel+CTRL - Zoom in/out - This is Win-Standard and covered in 99,9% of all programs)
    I know most people don't care about this, but working in different graphics programs at the same time can be very confusing and often ends in sheer frustration.
    So I decided to build a PC just Davinci, complete with the editor keyboard and the micro color correction thing - although I usually name my PCs after Disney characters, this one will be called "The Odd".

    The speed editor cost a lot less and worked great with the ATEM generated ISO files letting me overlay 8 camera angles with the touch of a button and the scroll of the wheel. It is worth $400 whereas the keyboard at $1000 at the time seemed like a waste of money to me

    I think it's a little ridiculous how expensive it is. Like I know it's highly specialized but is it really that much different than any other high end keyboard? was there really so much R&D required to make this keyboard to justify a $600 price tag? Like, I have a Daw controller with motorized faders and a display with program specific functions for multiple workspaces and that was only 500 bucks. My small DJ controller was only $200. Hell! an entry level Mac Mini is the same price as this freaking keyboard!!! A full on computer bro that's insane. I could justify $100 for this keyboard for sure, maybe $200, but no way in hell am I paying $600 for a plastic keyboard that does the same thing as any other keyboard but it has the functions written on it with a jog wheel and a couple extra buttons. edit: davinci resolve studio is $300, so it's not even like a bundle deal because that would still makes this a $300 keyboard! absolutely not worth it imo

    just remove the keycaps and use your config

    If the keyboard uses Cherry MX style switches, you can always swap out the keys with another key set.

      Kind of. Some keys are slightly different lengths than what you'd find on a normal keyboard and you might have a hard time finding keycaps for some of the keys. For a bunch of them it might work though yeah

    i think both are a waste of time as resolve works best with a normal keyboard and mouse... I wish though Blackmagic made a editor mouse

      I wouldn't say they're a waste of time. They're just meant for a different workflow than what some people are used to and that's okay. I personally really enjoy using my speed editor and find that it makes certain parts of the editing process a lot faster and simpler for me 😅

      @@georgekamenov_ I never edit on the cut page... which one should I look into then?

    • @georgekamenov_
      @georgekamenov_  5 місяців тому +1

      @@frequency_sequencer Well, in your specific case you might not want to look into either. That said, the big keyboard is also made to work across all pages, not just the cut one. But like I said in the video, that depends on if you've set up custom keybinds already, because in that case, using the editor keyboard might be more confusing than helpful.

    Hey don't You find LUNATIC that You are saying something on Factory keyboard VS Your custom order You already have made on Your standard keyboard?!?
    I mean, You are reviewing a porduct, with full logic built imto it by the ones who made the software itself...and them blamish it becouse You already made Your logic with shortcuts on some standard keyboard You have.
    Well, then You should be brave enough and say it more directly = "it is possible to make Your own shortcuts with every keyboard, but I do not like how the factory made it into their own software related keyboard" or somethimg like that!
    As this if any has no meaning at all by how You represented it!!
