  • The Davinci Resolve Speed Editor is a device that provides you with dedicated controls that can help to streamline your video editing process.
    In this video, I'll go over my first impressions and early observations as a new user of this device.

    If you click the spin wheel in, it highlights the nearest cursor point to a cut. I.E where the roll, slip, trim tool will work..... That's what it does

    Think of it like the speed editor being the free gift you get for buying the Studio license. Still an unparalleled value.

      I definitely agree. I have found myself using it less and less though. Mainly because it’s another device to carry around with me.
      I think if I was always editing at my home office or wasn’t on the move as much as I am, I would probably use it more.

      Unfortunately, they have increased the price of it by $100. Still a good deal compared to just buying the license.

    In my case I played around with the free version of Resolve and liked it. To my benefit I wasn't experienced in video editing and when I purchased the Studio version that came with with a free Speed Editor made a WORLD of difference. I hardly ever use the editor tab. I build the bulk of my videos in the cut page in a matter of minutes. the Edit tab is now strictly used to polish and adjust, just like the Color tab and Fairlight tab. In time I found the Cut tab to be one of the most valuable space in Resolve, especially when someone is waiting to see a draft of what you have in mind for their video. instead of taking a couple of hours in the Edit Tab I can do the same in the cut page within 15 minutes. The speed editor is absolutely essential. I can only imagine how a Mini Surface to color grade would bring to my workflow. Which is something I am considering if I ever get into disposable money. It's a toy but as musician knows, toys brings that feeling in when you want to get th sound you really want out of your guitar. Resolve and black magic toy together does the same to me.

      only problem i have is cut tab seems to lag. its not the footage, it runs every other tab fine, its just stuttering in cut. and when i make proxy it does the same. its not about processing power it really seems like a bug and its a big deal when im trying to cut precisely when few frames drop, also its annoying as hell

    My experience was entirely different in part because I had no experience with Resolve beyond a quick evaluation of the free version of Resolve before purchasing the Studio License / Speed Editor bundle which I did after watching several different tutorials on how to use it.
    Thanks to the tutorials I understood going in that it was designed to be used with the Cut page and having never used Resolve any other way I found the process of appending, trimming and adding to transitions very simple and intuitive. In addition to the convenience of the jog/scroll wheel it saved me the trouble of learning all the equivalent keyboard shortcuts or point and click equivalents on the user interface. All things considered it made the process of learning Resolve easier.

    I am considering purchasing the Speed Editor mainly to get DaVinci Resolve Studio version. Current pricing is $299 for Studio and $395 for Speed Editor plus Studio. So, the “getting the Speed Editor for free” option is no longer available, but paying $100 for it is still not a bad deal. Thanks for your reflections on the unit.

    Hey Mike.. I have one SE but didn’t used it very much. I am still learning the Davinci Resolve, so not a pro. But one thing I found particulary useful is the grabbing stills with the jog wheel. Like said, not a pro, but I doubt there can be a faster way to scrub through video and take out thousands of pictures.
    As for the manual, you are kinda right. Would be a nice to have one dedicated 50 pages pdf, but there is a ca 400 page Editors manual to download from BMD site and it covers all the functionality of the Speed editor. Not on one place though, but through working tutorials that are accompanied with downloadable video samples.
    My only problem with speed editor is, back to the jog wheel, that can lose connection to program so you have to reboot it by pressing 4 knobs at the same time. But this happened just once and the solution to this was already online, posted by people who have experienced this beforehand.
    The best, full tutorials for the use of SE I’ve found were those from
    Darren Mostyn and Mr AlexTech.
    But I don’t recall none of them mentioning the jog wheel button:). I hope the answer will come in the future or with a firmware update.
    Have a good day.

    Watched this for the second time, because I connected my speed editor for the first time. I now need that editing demo video. Don’t need the comparison because I have already purchased the activation key and SE package. Oh, effectively, I am a genuine newbie. Someday I will understand what a ripple delete is, but boy, most demos are too fast, very opaque.

    After some years using the Free version, in April 2020 I bought the Spped editor together with Studio License. I'm really happy of using Speed Editor in Cut Page and really good for me to first selection of clips from many files.... I'm still trying to understand which differences arrived with 18.1 version.....

    • @MikeLazarecki
      @MikeLazarecki  Рік тому +1

      Hey Dutch! It’s really hard to say if this is a product that would help your workflow or not. I am getting ready to make a follow-up video to this that I think you’ll want to see.
      I’ll say this, if you are editing all the time and constantly using the speed editor, it will almost definitely speed up the initial cut of whatever you are working on. Especially if you always edit at your home workstation. But if you are like me and you are traveling from home to a workplace and editing whenever you have time, I have found it to be inconvenient to carry with me so I resort back to keyboard shortcuts.

      @@MikeLazarecki Thank you for the imput. I'm excited to see the next video. The other big part I forgot to mention is not having gpu acceleration. • @MikeLazarecki

      That’s a hard one for me to comment on, I have been on the studio version of the software for a couple of years and have been using a MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro for the last 6+ months. With that system, I have been able to render 45minute wedding videos, fully color graded with stabilization on several shots in like 12 minutes.
      Playback is always smooth, even with large RAW video files from Canon C70’s and other crazy cameras. Haha

    • @DutchHollandLowz
      @DutchHollandLowz Рік тому

      @@MikeLazarecki I have a 3070ti Founders edition. So I would expect crazy fast render times. Currently though, a 10 minute video takes roughly 20 minutes to render. 40k 60fps. H.246. Also. My play back during editing is a bitch choppy because the system won't use the gpu.

    Thanks so much for this cool video! DaVinci will probably remain a Swiss army knife diamond-in-the-rough kind of thing forever. I'm cool with that and very interested. But without a manual, extensive tutorials, and a more friendly user-interface, most folks will probably not buy this hardware. Poor documentation, non-existent documentation, and even over-lengthy documentation are all unusable to me. If they were to fix these problems they would own the entire market and even more people would leave Premiere and Final Cut.
