I appreciate the time and detail you put into this. This is one of the best videos yet. You do great work and I’m very similar with my approach to my work. Well done
Great job. The Lawson product cabinets brought back some good memories working in my old mechanical shop. I ordered so much hardware from them when I worked in my vocation back in the day. You truly have this flag business down to a science. Keep up the great work.
What A BEAUTIFUL Job you did! I am impressed and I absolutely loved your video! very detailed and precise! You my friend are an amazing woodworker! The Flag is INCREDIBLE! I look forward to more videos! I am an artist and i love other artists and seeing their creations! Thank you!
Great Video!! I made one following your instructions and it came out great. I have received a lot of great feedback on it. I did get a little bleed over on the red stain, but a razor blade can scrape it away just fine. Thank you very much for efforts to make this process understandable.
I just saw someone in my local woodworking group make one of these and I so want to try it. Thank you for such a well put together video on how its done! Now to convince the husband we need to go to the lumber store lol
I just made one myself earlier this week and of course now I see the video. Good job explaining and going through. Next one I make I may use a gloss finish as the first one was satin.
My first couple were satin. But everyone since has been gloss. I have sold dozens of the gloss finish and in my experience most folks like that better. Good luck on your next one.
Thank you for the video, the measuring will help me out a ton. Would you mind sharing your setup for the burning? I currently use the little blue bottles & tired of it. Yours seems so much more convenient & easy to use
Man that’s really nice and you shared your layout. I am going to make one, thanks. Also, if you use a sharp razor knife and a straightedge you can score your lines before you stain and it really helps with the bleed through as it scores the fibers. Thanks again for sharing!
Great job, and extremely helpful in understanding how it all comes together. Can you tell me what size Union stencil you've used from the Amazon seven-pack?

I used gloss spar urethane on everything. It's great for exterior, I think it gives a better finish than most polyurethanes. I've tried different ones, but Helsman is my favorite
@@HanleysHomestead Do you use the oil base and your reasons to use the oil base .I think after little reading iwill use oil based . thank you again will wait for anser will have more questions later
@@bshort6941 sure do and that's perfectly fine. When you look at a real draped flag the stripes are not perfectly in line. The first couple I made I made sure the spacing was perfect until one day I took the time to look at a real one now I just make sure that when I start a new stripe its spaced right but then I let the tape follow the wave pattern in the wood.
Well done! Sie. You asked about the bleeding of the stains. I saw another video, for a regular flag, were the guy making it made a small cut were to stains were going to meet (were the Union was going to meet the red and white). He said that it was to cut the fibers in the wood, and when he painted it it came out perfect, colors did not bleed into each other. Maybe this can help you.
Man. Awesome work. It looks fantastic. I was a little bit confused by the layout, but it makes sense in the end. How many hours do you have into it? Not including drying overnight?
That all depends on how carried away I get with carving and shaping the waves. I try to have less than 3.5 hours not counting any dry times. Counting dry times and sanding between coats, it's a few days start to finish.
Have watched this several times and am planning on attempting this soon. Would have been great to add all parts in description like stencil size, frog tape diameter, dremel head, stain etc as an Amazon affiliated link so everyone benefits.
@@HanleysHomestead not over the whole project. Put the tape down like you do, then, just over the seam of the tape where you want the crisp edge, apply a thin strip of poly. When dry, paint as you normally would as the poly will accept the paint but prevent it from bleeding under the tape. Try it on some scrap piece and see how the stain works on the poly. The trick works on painting moldings and baseboards.

I'm having so much trouble masking off the lines. Other than that awesome video and thank you for taking the time to share👍
Trouble as far as what? Spacing? Good contact with the tape?
Spacing mainly. Whenever I go over any of the "waves" or the side it changes the angle of the tape if that makes sense.

You should have shown how to lay out the stripes...and the finished flag in total instead of a zoom
Use razor blades instead of tape. Rubber mallet in a line into wood. Leave in while staining
