I'm new to weight lifting and fitness in general. I'm about a year in and I still doubt what I can accomplish. My coach (who I've been with the entire time) now loads my bar for PRs because I get into my head so badly. I've been able to lift weight that still feels unimaginable! It's literally all in your head and being confident in the lift!
If I'm ever feeling like a lazy piece of shit, I always motivate myself by not allowing myself to watch one of Will's videos without working out first. He has really been a huge influence on my fitness journey! :)
I feel like I’d be a little stronger blindfolded, because without I tend to get in my head abit and think “oh that’s too risky I shouldn’t go higher” But also I workout alone at home so I don’t have a spotter, knowing I have a spotter there (along with not knowing the exact weight) is definitely going to push me.
It's kinda hard to keep yourfelf balanced. Bth man I wanna say a huge thank you for motivationg me to get into fitness, I've never felt myself so good like after a good workout, now I'm even trying to film my home workouts to help more people who doesn't have access to gym! Hope to become a fitness influencer too one day
In junior high I had plateaued at the same exact bench press for months. We were maxing out, my coach told me to close my eyes and take a deep breath, and he told the guys to add a 2.5 to each side and then told me to open my eyes and lift. After lifting I saw they added a 10 to each side and it was easy. I continued to have gains after that
Emotional state greatly effects strength. The easiest one that gives most people strength is to get angry. You get angry at the weight, and decide you'll do what it takes to move that POS, it'll usually move. But if you have structural limitations, as in pain, don't push past it. Fix that ish, and then get mad at a quarter of a ton. The 3rd guys posture was terrible for the deadlift, his shoulders were rounded over before he put any load on them. You want to keep your shoulders flat like you're standing if you can, to protect your rotator cuffs and upper back.
I have been a personal trainer now for over 7 years, I've done a similar experiment with probably 60 different people. Never to this much production but constantly adding weight to the bar without my clients knowledge because they always psych themselves out. In my experience, women vastly underestimate what they are capable of. Whereas men are either spot on or overestimate their abilities. The older than man the more accurate they seem to be, where the young men overestimate more. But women almost always underestimated themselves. Once I had a girl hit a 20lb 1rm on deadlift because she didn't know how much weight was on the bar. There were outliers for sure in every category but in general this is what I found to be true. At the end of the day every person is different. I'd love for you to do this video again but with more people and personality types.
Will would’ve loved graduate school and the IRB process. This could be a really great case study, especially if it was double-blinded and the contestants were in different rooms or went one-by one.
It is a lot of weight, but don't worry - it's a powerlifting phenomenon called thoractic rounding. It's the rounding of your upper back rather than your lumbar, so your back can handle heavier loads without causing too much strain. It's better than keeping a straight back.
Thoractic mid to upper back rounding is a thing. But that was definitely lower back rounding there. Granted that even little rounding on the lower end can be beneficial on rare max deadlift occasions, but you must control and recognise the limits there. That 205 was definitely scared cat rounding and just pulling with everything you got. That will do harm and on the long run cause severe issues. Romanian deadlifts are one of the best full body excercises out there, but the technique is hard to master and you definitely should recognise your limits and leave the ego out of the door. @@kevinbae2388
If you pause at 18:12 you can clearly see why he failed that bench, his right hand is way more narrow. I'm betting the horse blinder glasses made it pretty hard to get an even grip.
Variables left open: - Lifting Standards were not set (see the 'attempt' at 6:51). Without setting standards you cannot compare lifts... - Mindset: Some people believe in their abilities more than others. Maybe the woman is in genereal rather underestimating her abilities and therefore did limit her PRs before. Perhabs her old Squat PR was RPE 6 - Obviously the progress since their last PR is significant for this experiment. How hard did they train and how much time passed since their last PR? Especially because you chose rather Novice to early intermediate lifters who can progress quite fast - Lifting habits are modified due to blindfold, reduced hype, being forced to lift at a given time. Calm lifters might profit from this atmosphere, hype lifters might be affected in a negative way
@@nesciusplaygroundyeah. I think not concealing the identity of the test would’ve made them perform better. They all seem to be nervous for the blindfold and focus part
I think heavier for the girl, the same for the shorter gent, lighter for the taller gent. I don't think she's usually really going as hardcore with heavy lifts, so a heavier weight (even a PR) can still be very easily lifted (those deadlifts looked like a light warmup), except for bench where a small increase in weight is a lot for someone who isn't lifting a tonne of weight overall. I think the taller gent was in his head, and struggling with other things, and then on the deadlifts in particular it was very easy. Oh they guessed what I'm guessing lol. Yay, everyone is right! Could fill the ends of an olympic barbell with cement... Then the lighter person gets a fake weight added to the mix. Certainly a lot of variables here, but ultimately they were all correct with their guesses either way so whatever.
Other commenters are saying the same thing but I accidentally squatted 445x2 instead of 425x2 the other day and it felt like 425 to me mentally. I think the key is, when you're going for a heavy lift, treat all your warm up sets like they're a max. So your mindset and routine should not change regardless of the weight on the bar. I think that eliminates the mental variable
It would be impractical just for this video but custom made barbells with the weight difference built-in would be perfect for an experiment. Or maybe an opaque 3D printed cylinder to cover the plates. No need for blindfold/glasses. Love that line at the end - "What you give power to, has power over you." Great video!
I was stuck to 30kg dumbbells for incline push cause there aren't 32kg in my gym, after two weeks from me switching from 28kg to 30kg (so 2 pull days) I decided to go for the 34kg and see if I could get at least 3 reps (my goal was 5) and I did 6 with nothin in reserve. Did the next set with 34kg and last 3 sets with 30kg. Next week I was able to do first 3 sets with 34kg and last two with 30kg, then I started cutting and sadly had to come back to 30kg at peak, I'm now using 28kg for the first set and then go down to 26kg and 24kg (sometimes even 22kg). There surely is a psychological part in lifting.
4:36 the arm around the shoulder & the hello beautiful ... I wish I didn't feel sketched out by compliments, this is either really wholesome, or a little uncomfortable. I don't know how to handle feelings.
Good job Noelle! If you don’t have a coach already working on your form, consider chatting with someone. Looks like you’re lifting a lot with your back on those squats and if you can lift more with your legs I think you’ll keep getting PRs for awhile. You def have a lot more potential with the squat! Nice work.
I was noticing the same thing but I was going over in my head how she could fix it...I'm now realizing I have some of the same issue and its probably why squat is my worst lift.
It doesn't work like that, you can't just keep your back up if you have long femurs, short shinebone and also the length of your torso makes a big difference. But squat shoes would maybe benefit her
If she squatted upright, she would fall backwards. When your legs are long, you have to squat like that to keep the bar over your foot. If she rounded her back or her hips came up first, that would be more concerning

A buddy of mine spent weeks trying to bench 135, yet would fail every time because he was so up in his head about seeing the "big" plates on each side. One day, I loaded the bar up with 135 using smaller plates, without telling him how much weight I'd put on. Guess what? He was able to press it. So much of weightlifting is mental.
Personally, I find when I don’t think I’m gonna have a good workout (if I’m tired or not feeling it) then I end up having a great session and vice-versa.
I am a completely blind powerlifter and I find it much easier to get into muscle memory. Lost vision while serving in Afghanistan best lifts S-529, B-363, D-545.
100% know I leave strength in the tank when I left, especially with bench. My bench press has been hard stuck at 225 for over a year but my strength in every chest and triceps exercise has exploded over the last year. Even my dumbbell press has increased substantially but I still struggle with 225 on a bar. In the time since I hit 225 for the first time I've increased my dumbbell press from 8x70lbs to 25x75lbs or 5+ reps at 100lbs. My deadlift is also an area where I mentally hold myself back. The only time I've hit 435 was a day when I told myself "the bar will be heavy but you got this" and then accidentally misloaded 435 instead of 425... and it felt EASY. Like I could have went for a double but I felt a fart coming and I was in a crowded gym. Deadlift farts tend to be pretty loud, at least for me. If not for the fart I would have pulled a second rep.
I'm really glad you did this. I have been saying this for a long time. It would be awesome to see people lift random objects without knowing the weight.
I accidentally did this to myself a few months ago when I went to a new gym. Picked up what I thought was 15kg Dumbbells and did some presses. I expected to be able to do 12 reps but I only managed 5 or 6 and wrote it off as a severe 'off-day'. When I put them back I noticed that they had been misplaced and were actually 22.5kg 😂
'Placebo vs. Nocebo' = No matter what the weight lifted be the same, heavier, or even its lighter. Everything is up to your mind to jump scare out of the panic/fear. 🤩
8:30 bech press cue, you need to be pressing your toes/feet against the floor before starting. This firms your body in the bench and will provide a slight impulse for your upper body to elevate the bar. All your body needs to be activated in the bench. Bench is not a "upper body exercise". If it has been for you, you need to fix it.
Actually there is a big psychological study, that proofs that women perform worse when you tell them there are not as good as men in a topic :) So in my opinion its so stupid that in sport we focus so much about the fact, that men are stronger and faster in average. Women can achive a lot and be pretty good. You also would never tell somebody „yeah have fun running, but you will never be as good as a profi athlet“ when they start a sport. I think we should stop that and focus on what we can do 👍
Bro, you have a one sample statistic with 3 tests, 1 failed and 2 succeeded with something like 4% increase over the perceived PR. And she felt it was heavier.
@@williambrinkmeier1772 Maybe we should not take our own observations as facts. First of all if it was true maybe the part that women get told they a weak influence the training intensity from women a lot. Second of all you only see a small part of women training. And also how close they go to failure is just an guess you take. There are humans that step over their limits and dont express that much and other people that are far away from their limits and already screaming etc (just look at the expression of pain in for example Art sports like dancing. A lot of times the when the dancers fall pretty hard and even breaking their leg etc they just stand up and continue. But i football for example they cry very early) so actually its hard to see from the outside if someone is really going to their limits
I just competed in a powerlifting meet with a blind 75 kg (165 lbs) lifter who put up a 657.5 kg (1,450 lbs) raw total. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
If you do something similar again, I definitely think that a better way to hide the weight would be using some kind of board to block the line of sight from the rack, like a larger round piece of wood that can be slid over the same place where the weights are, rather than the glasses. I'm pretty sure people could see the weight during the deadlift and bench. Really cool concept though and a great video! Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Depends on the lift, had this a few weeks back. My 1RM was 220kg's before I started training for PL. Adjusted my technique and everything over the course of a few months. Did my official 1RM testing and apparently miscounted and put 240kg's on. Didn't even notice, thought I put 220 on it to test. Failed on grip(no magnesium) So my coach said put some magnesium on, you have this. But hey? What was your previous 1RM? You know this is 240 right? Wellll, I still got it, but damn. If I had to put 240 on it knowing I'd have to do it, I think I'd failed.
It's so interesting watching the average people lift nowadays, there are so mentally weak I remember when I used to train really heavy 20 plus years ago I always read from the silver era and golden era About visualising you're lifting What's every time I loaded the bar for squats and deadlift, that was it didn't think about the weight at all I was just have a little walk around the rack or the bar visualising all the muscles I needing to use visualise the actual lift and focusing on my breathing Then I would rattle the bar and shout at it to say that I owned it When the lift became to the point where I can't lift, I wouldn't worry about the way all I was worried about is getting the bar to it's finishing position so I would scream get the lift finished
I think it depends on mindset. I never think that it's too much. I just do it and give it my all. I'm impressed by the lady. And honestly, it seemed like everyone underestimated their squats, and she underestimated her deadlift too.
3 months into lifting my my cousin took me into his gym. He told me to get under the bench and he’ll rack me. He put on 180 without me knowing. I asked him how much he put on because his plates were in Kg and I never had experience with Kg. He told me not to worry about it and to lift it. I hit 180 thinking it was 145. I still don’t know how to feel about this 😭
I once went for a deadlift PR and misloaded the bar by a full 20kg and still made the lift as I expected to be moving up only by 2.5kg not 22.5kg, there’s definitely a psychological element to it.

7:34 was the most hilarious jump scare i've ever experienced
Will is one of the best fitness influencer out there. Keep it up🫡
Do we get an update on the 60 day stranger transformation ❤
it's been 46 days since he put the video up...should be another couple wks or so
what about the knees over toes @@STEVEN_GUILBEAULT_BUFFOON
I have absolutely loved the content and going through the backlog as a new subscriber. I think the mixture of fitness, nutrition, and wackiness is the perfect entertaining blend to keep viewers hooked. Cannot wait to see what you do next!
Hishams squat form is on point, really impressive, great bar path and depth
I'm new to weight lifting and fitness in general. I'm about a year in and I still doubt what I can accomplish. My coach (who I've been with the entire time) now loads my bar for PRs because I get into my head so badly. I've been able to lift weight that still feels unimaginable! It's literally all in your head and being confident in the lift!
Great concept. Can’t wait to see how you develop it over time. Hope a series of this comes!!
The Noel jump scare at 7:35 got me 😂😂
I’m glad to hear it 😂 Sincerely, Editor
Fr😂
Daddy Noel and Mommy Noelle
if i squatted like noelle did my back would snap in half
long femur, same for me but I'm trying to work on my ankle mobility
to go deeper and touch more quadriceps, rly hard the back squat for long femur:(
she kinda has to with those mile long femurs. I have the same issue and actually I have developed back issues.
It's completely fine.
Would be beneficial for her to squat in heeled shoes or on plates to elevate the heel. Also cursed with long ass femurs.
Actually insanely impressive
*whispers* this is like psychologically violating them... but I love it
💀
If I'm ever feeling like a lazy piece of shit, I always motivate myself by not allowing myself to watch one of Will's videos without working out first. He has really been a huge influence on my fitness journey! :)
Thats so nice 💝
I feel like I’d be a little stronger blindfolded, because without I tend to get in my head abit and think “oh that’s too risky I shouldn’t go higher”
But also I workout alone at home so I don’t have a spotter, knowing I have a spotter there (along with not knowing the exact weight) is definitely going to push me.
It's kinda hard to keep yourfelf balanced.
Bth man I wanna say a huge thank you for motivationg me to get into fitness, I've never felt myself so good like after a good workout, now I'm even trying to film my home workouts to help more people who doesn't have access to gym! Hope to become a fitness influencer too one day
Noel did the whole thing beltless like okkk I see you
🔥
That opera Note Hold was AMAZING!!! Crazy skills!
The quality of these videos is something else. Its amazing 🔥 I accidentally went up in leg press because my math didnt work properly 💀
Will would’ve loved graduate school and the IRB process. This could be a really great case study, especially if it was double-blinded and the contestants were in different rooms or went one-by one.
Not being scared of weight is what gave me a scar on my face
If it's with a spotter or safeties, my sense of self preservation is gone
My spine started hurting watching the 2 guys deadlift, holy cow
Better work on that glassback
There’s nothing wrong with their deadlift
thoracic rounding is ok tbh
Noel popping out of nowhere 7:31 really had me cracking 😂
If you pause at 18:12 you can clearly see why he failed that bench, his right hand is way more narrow. I'm betting the horse blinder glasses made it pretty hard to get an even grip.
Variables left open:
- Lifting Standards were not set (see the 'attempt' at 6:51). Without setting standards you cannot compare lifts...
- Mindset: Some people believe in their abilities more than others. Maybe the woman is in genereal rather underestimating her abilities and therefore did limit her PRs before. Perhabs her old Squat PR was RPE 6
- Obviously the progress since their last PR is significant for this experiment. How hard did they train and how much time passed since their last PR? Especially because you chose rather Novice to early intermediate lifters who can progress quite fast
- Lifting habits are modified due to blindfold, reduced hype, being forced to lift at a given time. Calm lifters might profit from this atmosphere, hype lifters might be affected in a negative way
To make it easier next time, instead of putting sunglasses on, just put trash bags over the plates.
They were told it is about focus, trash bags wouldn't achieve that.
11:23 the famous turkey handclap, where the fist meets the flat hand..
😬 love your content as always
Catchball!
I think that eliminates the mental variable
bro, when people on your videos say lbs - can you put an on screen KG equivalent, I'm forever googling lbs kgs when I'm watching your stuff.
It would be impractical just for this video but custom made barbells with the weight difference built-in would be perfect for an experiment. Or maybe an opaque 3D printed cylinder to cover the plates. No need for blindfold/glasses. Love that line at the end - "What you give power to, has power over you." Great video!
I love when Will enters the room everyone runs away like he's captured them.
Dude Will put out so much unique creative and original video concepts man. GOAT!
more videos like these would be awesome. it makes a big difference seeing multiple people at different stages or places testing things out
3:00 I have never seen anyone with such a close grip, wild I wanna try it now
Will is now also a scientist , is there anything this man can’t do ???
Yes, create a better experiment. He’s definitely not a scientist, not yet.
swim hahaha
i thought you wouldve mixed up who was lifting heavier or lighter for each lift. would give more data
even when she was blind she still hit that handshake
Played in a rock band with Noelle back in highschool, can confirm she rocks! Glad you're still killin it Noelle!
That Noel edit at 7:33 made me feel things I haven't felt since my dad left to buy milk
Everyone's talking about Noelle's squat but no one gonna mention those cat back deads?!
Next week I was able to do first 3 sets with 34kg and last two with 30kg,
then I started cutting and sadly had to come back to 30kg at peak, I'm now using 28kg for the first set and then go down to 26kg and 24kg (sometimes even 22kg).
There surely is a psychological part in lifting.
Lateral raises while blindfolded would be crazy
Why?
No one cares about lateral raise pr tho lol
4:36 the arm around the shoulder & the hello beautiful ...
I wish I didn't feel sketched out by compliments, this is either really wholesome, or a little uncomfortable.
I don't know how to handle feelings.

Always a great day when Will Tennyson uploads.👌
Good job Noelle! If you don’t have a coach already working on your form, consider chatting with someone. Looks like you’re lifting a lot with your back on those squats and if you can lift more with your legs I think you’ll keep getting PRs for awhile. You def have a lot more potential with the squat! Nice work.
Her form isn’t as bad as you think
@@jmagicd9831 I didn’t say it was.
Noelle’s goodmorning squat hybrid scared me that has to be harder than if she kept her back up
She has very long femurs, makes it really difficult (or impossible) to maintain an upright position.
That deadlift form had my back screaming
Wow! Your videos are getting so high quality Will!
Bro just uploaded🧍♂️
im sayin@@Lownerzzz
@@LownerzzzYeah, I know, but as soon as you see the animation and intro, you know it’s gonna be a banger. His videos now are higher quality than four years ago. His humour is gold too
Getting? When will they be high quality?
@@Disneymagic24What I mean by that is that the quality of his videos is always getting better, although they’ve been high quality for a long time. No matter how good someone gets , they can always get better.
I really like these types of videos from Will
Hisham definitely had the best form on his squat
Definitely on Squat I would be stronger, I always psych myself out on squat
All their forms sucked.
New title: Study finds 3 out of 3 lifters lie about their max bench press.
That female was ready. She was having fun
Personally, I find when I don’t think I’m gonna have a good workout (if I’m tired or not feeling it) then I end up having a great session and vice-versa.
This is a great episode. Love this concept Will!!🎉
That Noel bit was awesome 😂
Glad you liked it lol (Editor)
I am a completely blind powerlifter and I find it much easier to get into muscle memory. Lost vision while serving in Afghanistan best lifts S-529, B-363, D-545.
Its a Mindset -Dr Rick de la Stick
Keep up the great work will. Love the content.
I was waiting for you to Drop a video man I know it's going to be 🔥
8:30 bech press cue, you need to be pressing your toes/feet against the floor before starting. This firms your body in the bench and will provide a slight impulse for your upper body to elevate the bar. All your body needs to be activated in the bench. Bench is not a "upper body exercise". If it has been for you, you need to fix it.
Confirms what I already knew: women are stronger than they think/are told they are.
Woman do sell themselves short all the time. While man oversell theirs reason why man have more deaths in the bench press
No they generally don't train as hard test creates more drive I rarely ever see women go anywhere close to failure in the gym .
Why was Will so touchy with Shawn😭
Love the support between the three. Good gym culture there.
Nobody is doing it like Will. Who else is doing content like this?! Good stuff!
Interesting concept.
This is so hype!!!
7:50 Noel was so cute how she said and hand signaled what her 1 rep max was
I really love your videos!! Definitely my favorite fitness influencer!! Keep it up brother!!!
It's so interesting watching the average people lift nowadays, there are so mentally weak
I remember when I used to train really heavy 20 plus years ago
I always read from the silver era and golden era
About visualising you're lifting
What's every time I loaded the bar for squats and deadlift, that was it didn't think about the weight at all
I was just have a little walk around the rack or the bar
visualising all the muscles I needing to use visualise the actual lift and focusing on my breathing
Then I would rattle the bar and shout at it to say that I owned it
When the lift became to the point where I can't lift, I wouldn't worry about the way all I was worried about is getting the bar to it's finishing position so I would scream get the lift finished
banger video idea
I think it depends on mindset. I never think that it's too much. I just do it and give it my all. I'm impressed by the lady. And honestly, it seemed like everyone underestimated their squats, and she underestimated her deadlift too.
7:06 his grip is way off balance.
Hisham looks like such a kind dude
This is how a physical therapist tore a ligament in my shoulder, by not telling me he was giving me 10 lbs more than I was able to lift
Hit 100kg bench for the first time the other week. Did it pretty drunk and it flew up. Try sober vs drunk PRs
Wait how did she high five Will after being "blind folded"?
because she's actually blindered and not blind folded, so that she can see where to rack
Ah I see@@ULTRAOutdoorsman
"What you give power to has power over you, if you allow it" Very well said
2:10 what an outstanding voice, just beautiful
3 months into lifting my my cousin took me into his gym. He told me to get under the bench and he’ll rack me. He put on 180 without me knowing. I asked him how much he put on because his plates were in Kg and I never had experience with Kg. He told me not to worry about it and to lift it. I hit 180 thinking it was 145. I still don’t know how to feel about this 😭
