I would much rather watch videos on the evolution of this specific truck than a 3rd gen. I have a 25 limited factory lifted 3rd gen. Probably my most favorite truck I've ever owned, but the 2nd gen is so good. And with it in your capable hands, I know it will be awesome. Excited for the supercharger!
I love our 2018 Sequoia. It’s such a comfortable truck. The V8 it’s amazing and gas isn’t that bad. We drove from NJ to Florida and I was averaging 18 plus. I filled up twice. The room for the kids and knowing that it just will start every time and not give any issues, is worth keeping for years to come. No rattles so far. I have everything I need. No crazy tech but I don’t need it.
Good video Jon, hopefully you won't get torched too much but you can't build videos that please everyone. This is a good honest review from someone that has owned both for more than a minute, despite what some might think. I think the most appealing thing about 2nd Gen is the reliability and how the "well built" feeling lasts up to 200k+. It's not just reliable, 2nd Gens with 100k feel the same as 2nd gens with 200k, it's astounding how good the build quality is, but it has its limits. It will never drive like the new one, It won't tow as much as the new one, it won't double as a race truck, but it will probably tow for longer and outlast the new. For folks that are constantly cycling vehicles, 3rd gen is probably awesome, more fun to drive and they way to go (just don't keep out of warranty). For folks that want to just buy something and keep for 10yrs+, 2nd gen and it's not even close. I think it's two completely different types of people.

Oh..and no light in the glove box on the 3rd gen? come on Toyota, my 2008 honda crv has that
The only other Toyota I considered before I bought my 2019 LC200 was a 19-21 Tundra TRD Pro. Great truck! Love that huge gas tank! But in the end the 8 speed auto and full time 4wd won me over.
Really good video. Loved the comparison. It’s funny everyone has a fav. Some love the old v8 some love the new hybrid. Years ago the FJ cruiser was not a big deal, now it is. One thing about Toyotas is they always weather the storm and years from now they will all be considered favorites. Everyone one dogs the new Land Cruiser but having all of them I love it. I loved the 200 series, now love the 250. Loved the old Supra from the 80s now love the new ones. Loved the older 4Runners and I have had most of them, now loves last years and then new ones. Morale of the story you just can’t go wrong. (But the price’s are getting crazy). Keep your the awesome videos.
2:34 lmao. Exactly how I felt when the dealer was working on my Tacoma for frame replacement. They gave me a couple 2.5 gen Tundras as rentals to use and I was scooting that 5.7L. Felt great
Jon, the 19 pro on an SR5 platform was a sub $40,000 trim. So, yeah plastic makes sense. But for a $75,000 TRD PRO, I think buyers are expecting lesser plastic. Spot on review though
I love the raw feeling of my 2nd gen TRD pro. I also had a 2010 reg cab long box before that. Talk about a REAL truck. However, I do agree with the seat complaints. I don’t feel like I’m being hugged enough by the seat and I feel like I’m subconsciously always fighting to stay in the seat. Also, having a powered drivers seat but not passenger seat is just silly.
I used to look forward to new Toyotas (and other new vehicles). Now, I’m a “classic” Toyota fan. I have several early 90’s Toyotas and my new (15 year old) 2024 TRD Pro. I’m really curious how the refresh of the Tundra will change. The new one is not ideal, but let’s see how they fix it.
I totally disagree. The TNGA vehicles are superior. That said I like old school vehicles better in some ways. The 19 RAV4 for example is superior to the POS 18 RAV4. The new 4Runner is better at least when it comes to low end torque and fitting bigger tires. They are improving the TNGA vehicles slowly every year. The 25 Camry for example is the best one ever.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q2019 and newer RAV4s come with that dreaded 8 speed that hunts for gears, not to mention the 2.5 A25A engine is noisy and unrefined for what it is, and burns oil at 80-100k miles
@@BigAltimaEnergy719 They don’t burn any oil and the transmission is smooth as butter. There are zero reports of this engine burning oil unless abused or not maintained. The shifting behavior is based on input from the driver. Resetting the ECU and getting a better driver fixes the issue. My early build 19 shifts great. It’s the smoothest transmission I’ve ever experienced. The engine burns zero oil at 140k.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q U probably do a lot of highway driving, that’s an exception since it puts less strain on the engine. City driving with stop and go traffic is a different story tho.
It's such a beautiful truck. Love the rugged classic pickup truck exterior and the rare color. If I didn't live in the rustbelt I'd buy a used one. I agree on the missing comfort features, but I'm sure you'll get there with the upgrades and will provide us some quality content.😅
Im on my second 2nd gen tundra, had a 2014 over 100k miles not a single issue. My current 2015 is almost 80k miles no issues, at some point I stopped caring about getting the newest "stuff". I love my tundra I drive it everyday with all its flaws because its not sitting at the dealership for repairs, it just works.
One might have acoustic glass and the other doesn't. I have to say my 2024 is super quiet, no rattles. Only issue is a sudden rear brake squeak backing up first stop.
Hey Jon ! Happy New Year ! Love the video. Had the thought, regarding the gears… have you reprogrammed the truck for the larger size tires ? Although not a big change it may be throwing off the computer. When I put 34’s in the 4R & added the Magnuson we had to reprogram it. Wishing you the best !
One of the pros you can’t see right now is that in ten years, this truck will still be running and the other truck will be crushed and recycled into the next generation.
I just purchased a 21 Pro tundra in lunar rock about three months ago and I am not getting rid of this for a while!! Definitely not going to purchase a new tundra it’s not only the engine problems and also transmission problems. They are having they are ridiculously stupid for making their price is so high. The auto industry right now is hurting and the best thing that we can do is not feed into it and purchase anything new make them bring their prices down.!!
I would love to have a 2nd Gen Tundra to be able to share on my channel, out of everything it is the one I trust most. You are right though about the 3rd gen Tundra driving like a car because I recently filmed a 2025 Tundra and it was just easy to drive which took away that ‘truck feel’
I cannot comment about the Gen3 Tundras as I've not driven one. But, your comments about the 2.5? I have to agree with most. My greatest gripe is about the amount of hard plastic throughout the cab. It does not feel good to the touch and scratches incredibly easily. Yes, the mpg is really poor and I wish it had an 8 or 10spd transmission. The steering is a bit vague at highway speeds. However, I find the front seats comfortable on my 2020 Pro. Maybe there was a change from the 2019 to the 2020 or maybe just a better fit for me. I prefer the higher stance of the seats. And, I don't agree that the truck feels underpowered. Yes, it downshifts when more load is encountered. That is because that the 6th gear is an overdrive ratio and so must downshift in order to match optimum torque/rpm for the condition. And, finally.... reliability. The 2.5 gen has proven itself over many model years and is top of the class across all brands for reliability. I'm sure that is why the resale value remains stable.
If your ding is a few mpg’s, I would call that a win for gen 2 As a 21 trd pro owner, I like the new ones but I also know I saved $20k so a bit extra in gas I can live with. That said if I was in a gen 3, I would be a-ok 😊
I like my 3rd gen (Limited TRD OR) at 31K miles ... I like the power- I don't spend a ton on gas like I expected- I like all the cool new features- the family is comfortable on road trips- I like the look- and I'm getting a brand new engine. I don't have all the rattles and wind noise as some. I've kept mine stock- I put Falken Wildpeak AT4's on it and it looks pretty good (20's)- It is by far not a perfect truck and I guess you have to spend $150K to get a perfect truck these days- not sure. I always get compliments on my truck. I know Ford had the most recalls last year (2024) and I believe they struggle with recalls every single year. I appreciate the video Jon- I was curious what your overall opinion was going to be when you bought the 2nd gen. Happy 2025!
Jon did you get the OTT tune yet? Smoothes out the shift points and lets the truck rev higher before shifting. Add a good bit of horse power too. Well worth it.
I was debating on either the 2nd gen Tundra or 3rd Gen Taco, thanks for the video, Jon! Wish it came sooner but I am happy with my 3rd Gen Taco... For now.😅
Gas mileage does suck but I can get easily get 17 mpg highway in my 2020 TRD Pro with the Westcott Designs lift and E load 295’s. I do not use cruise control though and feel like I can “control” its shiftiness better without it which I believe helps with getting better mpg’s.
When the 2nd gen came out in 2007 it was a game changer. This 3rd gen is straight downgrade and comparing to the competition there’s better options right easy . The competition in 07 had to step up there game .
I have a 19 Platinum and was gonna trade it for a new one and thought na. Just was not worth it for me for a lesser truck. I do agree that they are rough but it's a truck so I'm ok with it. Then weird on the no heated seats because I have cooled and heated seats in mine. Guess it's based in a Sr5 probably but my platinum actually feels built good to me. When you shut the door you can feel the build quality in the truck.
I traded in my 2.5 for the third gen. No way I would go back! Side note, I loved my platinum 2.5. It really is not a comparison. Reliability only time will telll.
Not a bad summary of the strengths and weaknesses. I have a 2021 SR5 and while I love it, I would say its biggest weaknesses are gas mileage and payload.
The 2nd Gen is basically superior as a “work” truck, something with no frills and fully dependable. If I had the luxury of having more than one vehicle I’d have a 2nd Gen as a work truck. However I don’t have that luxury, so I’d take a 3rd Gen over it as a daily driver for sure (once the issues are worked out).
I’ll agree with you on the seats in the 2nd gen. There isn’t enough side bolstering on the back or bottom. It’s very flat and wide overall without much support. Almost designed for someone who weighs 250lbs.
The popular wave right now is to crap on the 3rd gen...both things can be true, the 2nd gen as great as it is, is a time capsule and the third gen beats it in lots of categories. People forget but when the second gen first came out, they had a bunch of issues.
See if you notice your Tundra clicking when you are turning, as if you were pulling out. Mine did, and Toyota said everything was fine. Drove me nuts. It sounded like I was hitting metal together. I hope it doesn't. For the record, mine was a 2019 TRD Offroad.
We bought brand new a 2017 SR5 5.7L i get 15-16 MPG City. Towing my 19’ Airstream and average 12.5 mpg. My Chevy Avalanche w/ 5.3 L (268 HP) thats 100 hp less and it made same city mpg but 10-11 mpg towing same camper. Not sure if I can get a lot if i sell it with garage kept 48k miles I’ve been offered $19k-$20k by private and dealership. It will be in our family for many, many years 😊
@@jamesbowman9495 it was a lot of engines, at the time of recall it was less than 1% of the trucks were affected🙄. I bet Ford has similar failure rates normally.
That truck is a gem it’s def a beast there are some things you have to do to the truck but that’s every truck you buy it’s not fun unless you have to do some mods the Led lights and the new radio every one has to do unless you have the 14 inch monitor but you still had to replace the speakers because the factory JBLs suck the magnets are so small on any of the speackers the JBO‘s and other factory speakers if you buy the ones that are not plug-in play there’s videos on UA-cam they’re plug-and-play you just had to buy a couple extra plugs you save a lot of money on the speackers I kept seeing all these videos the plug-in play speakers are like $500 no matter which brand that you got then I seen a couple other videos where you get the same brand speackers that or not plug and play but they are plug and play it is fine and extra couple clips and you save a lot of money there’s definitely a few videos on UA-cam that I seen because I was wondering why no matter what brand speaker I bought I was still spending $500 and then I seen the video that’s not what they cost as people making money on the speackers when you can hook up the plugs yourself 👍👍👍👍👍🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾💪💪💪💪💪🦾🦾🦾🦾love that truck

Jon, you are wrong the 2nd gen Tundra is better than the 3rd gen. However, none of us are perfect and we still love ❤️ you man. It’s also that time of the year when we should be kind to others, even people with grievously wrong judgments. 😃
I have a white one in mind for long term business use, these special blue/tan/gray ones are really tempting, but if anyone has a that tomato soup colored one...I found a nice topper shell for one of those on cragislist this week...if you wanna sell your truck ;)
Toyota dropped ball on the Gen 3. Massive engine recalls and owners sweating ticking time bombs. I still smile every time I jump into my 20 Pro. Great truck with zero worries.
I get about 17.9 mpg on a long trip. It does looks better with larger tires ,but I am not willing to sacrifice more mpg. Wait till you throw that supercharger on, mpg will get worst.
My 2002 SR5 Tundra is more Camry like than my 2007 SR5 and the '02 is also quieter than my '07, in my humble opinion my 1st and early generation Tundra trucks are much better looking than any Tundra made after 2013.
I have a 2nd gen 2019 and my dad just bought a new 1794 that I’ve been driving all week. His 3rd gen is WAY quieter than my 2nd gen. Granted, my 2019 has the TRD exhaust, but I totally disagree with your comments on noise levels.
Good assessment Jon. I am more disappointed with Toyota than either of the trucks. There’s no excuse for them going backwards in the areas they did. I have a 2018 double cab and the back seat is perfectly usable. The 3rd gen double cabs might as well not even have a seat. Plus that turning radius you mentioned. Total deal breakers for me. Like I said, I am thoroughly disappointed in Toyota for screwing up things that are so fundamental. These can’t be fixed with aftermarket upgrades.
I do t remember if you put a westcott 2.5 on your tundra or not but I'm wondering if you did or anyone else in the comments had an issue with the pre collision sensor malfunction. I can't seem to get it fixed. Any ideas?

Oh and the horrible turning radius, oh and the horrible noises at speed, its a piece of junk compared to the 2nd gen
I never loved how the double fake hood scoop in this gen of TRD Pros looked. But that V8 with the TRD exhaust is just 🤌
I love the third gen and would love to see another one on the channel!
The only other Toyota I considered before I bought my 2019 LC200 was a 19-21 Tundra TRD Pro. Great truck! Love that huge gas tank! But in the end the 8 speed auto and full time 4wd won me over.
It’s huge for sure. Makes up for the crap mpg. Until your pay at the pump haha.
I Put in a new DAISTA HU its been a great game changer in my driving. Also front camera set up is huge as well
Really good video.
I would check with the dogs. Park both in the driveway with the back door open and tell them to get in the truck…see what they prefer.
2:34 lmao.
Exactly how I felt when the dealer was working on my Tacoma for frame replacement. They gave me a couple 2.5 gen Tundras as rentals to use and I was scooting that 5.7L. Felt great
I’d take that solid 5.7 v8 any day over new generation time bomb.
This truck looks like it’s built solid and the color is very nice.
Proof that newer isn’t better. The people will see this once the 6th gen 4Runner hits. Toyota cut costs everywhere on the TNGA-F vehicles.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q New is never better nowadays
That sound is heavenly
Can’t go wrong with the blue. Keep it bro.
Hi Jon, are you going to do the giveaway for the 4G Taco? Also, love the content
I'm not. There didn't seem to be enough in the comments that wanted it to happen. So I will be selling it.
@ dang, ok thanks for the update
Bro chill, Raw isn’t always better 😭😭
LOL bro
Bruh lol
Gen Z: "bro bro bro bro bro"
Im on my second 2nd gen tundra, had a 2014 over 100k miles not a single issue. My current 2015 is almost 80k miles no issues, at some point I stopped caring about getting the newest "stuff". I love my tundra I drive it everyday with all its flaws because its not sitting at the dealership for repairs, it just works.
He said " This Tundra. Its underpowered with the 6 speed". 5th gen 4runners have entered the chat.
Where did you get that steering wheel, bro? It looks nice.
One of the pros you can’t see right now is that in ten years, this truck will still be running and the other truck will be crushed and recycled into the next generation.
Do you have a magic globe that tells the future?
I just purchased a 21 Pro tundra in lunar rock about three months ago and I am not getting rid of this for a while!! Definitely not going to purchase a new tundra it’s not only the engine problems and also transmission problems. They are having they are ridiculously stupid for making their price is so high. The auto industry right now is hurting and the best thing that we can do is not feed into it and purchase anything new make them bring their prices down.!!
@@Gmanautonut what transmission problems? I like the new tundra transmission a lot.
I would love to have a 2nd Gen Tundra to be able to share on my channel, out of everything it is the one I trust most.
You are right though about the 3rd gen Tundra driving like a car because I recently filmed a 2025 Tundra and it was just easy to drive which took away that ‘truck feel’
I’ve got your truck, but a 2021 TRD Pro in white, and I agree: seats are trash. Love everything else though.
I hear the OTT tune completely changes the shifting on the truck. Might be something to look into!
If your ding is a few mpg’s, I would call that a win for gen 2
As a 21 trd pro owner, I like the new ones but I also know I saved $20k so a bit extra in gas I can live with.
That said if I was in a gen 3, I would be a-ok 😊
My complaint is that killer gun metal color trim above the glove box should have been used instead all of the stupid silver and chrome.
For sure man. Yea it’s not the end of the world, but it’s just when comparing to my more modified 3rd gen the difference in MPG
For now.😅
Heck ya!!!
@@NotYoCheese714 💯 Toyota was trying to really beat the competition in 2007, and it blew away ford, dodge, and GM at the time…
Yea it’s honestly a let down on how much they didn’t care about the competition
Best looking, best running, longest lasting, almost all the "issues" you have can be solved by the aftermarket
Glad you are enjoying the new truck!
Bro you should try getting the OTT tune it’s awesome! They also tune the transmission so it shifts great especially uphill.
That’s perfectly put.
My opinion sir 2nd generation is much respect 🙏🏿 beautiful truck 😊
I’ll agree with you on the seats in the 2nd gen. There isn’t enough side bolstering on the back or bottom. It’s very flat and wide overall without much support. Almost designed for someone who weighs 250lbs.
2nd gen Gold! 3rd gen garage
The popular wave right now is to crap on the 3rd gen...both things can be true, the 2nd gen as great as it is, is a time capsule and the third gen beats it in lots of categories. People forget but when the second gen first came out, they had a bunch of issues.
I will follow you with a super charger can’t wait!!!!!!
It's funny you're tundra gets better mpg than my 24 tacoma on 35s lol
See if you notice your Tundra clicking when you are turning, as if you were pulling out. Mine did, and Toyota said everything was fine. Drove me nuts. It sounded like I was hitting metal together. I hope it doesn't. For the record, mine was a 2019 TRD Offroad.
I haven’t heard that yet, but I’ll keep an ear out
the plastic comment is spot on. so many people act like old Toyotas are made of Corinthian leather it is hilarious. Talk about selective memory 😂
Yup. When they get totaled in an accident all those flimsy pieces of plastic don't kill you either.
It will be in our family for many, many years 😊
I think the third gen will make a comeback, everyone panicked…after all the engine mess gets settled, things will settle
Pretty huge mess to get settled, reports 2025 tundra engines are grenading too…
@@jamesbowman9495 it was a lot of engines, at the time of recall it was less than 1% of the trucks were affected🙄. I bet Ford has similar failure rates normally.
Everyone keeps saying things will settle but they’re selling fine. Look at the numbers
Hey jon where can i get that hat? Ive looked everywhere and cant find it looks like the only way to buy one is to be part of the nitto crew not sure if you have any connections or a spare one i can buy from you
Jon, you are wrong the 2nd gen Tundra is better than the 3rd gen. However, none of us are perfect and we still love ❤️ you man. It’s also that time of the year when we should be kind to others, even people with grievously wrong judgments. 😃
lol 😆
I have a white one in mind for long term business use, these special blue/tan/gray ones are really tempting, but if anyone has a that tomato soup colored one...I found a nice topper shell for one of those on cragislist this week...if you wanna sell your truck ;)
That's not brained best engine period 💪
Hey Trd jon, i love your video. I think another cons is the gray headliner. Do you think you can try to change to grey headliner to black?
Yes you can. I do agree with that
@@TRDJon where can i find the accessories for that
It would be an interior shop for sure. Custom.
😂 Acting like 16-17 mpg isn't atrocious.
My last truck was 2020 Trd Pro Tundra and was very outdated and sluggish compared to my 2024 1794 Trd Offroad.
2nd Gen gas mileage can be brutal especially if towing. What size tires do you have? 285 or 295/70/18?
They are 295/70
Dude enough about gas mileage. It is what it is. This is why it is reliable.
LOL. Yeah, and he said he’s gonna turn around and put a supercharger on it now?? I’m not saying nothing more.
Do you think the 25 Tundras have the bugs worked out? The engine issue, the wind noise, the rattles??
Yes, a supercharger! Get the MESO Customs interior lighting you won't regret it.
I got a new 2025 Tundra over the American Big 3. It’s fit, finish, and features fit my family recreational and light house chore use cases the best.
Toyota dropped ball on the Gen 3. Massive engine recalls and owners sweating ticking time bombs. I still smile every time I jump into my 20 Pro. Great truck with zero worries.
Gotta love that reliability!
Have You Sell Your 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road! Or Looking For Buyer
I'm selling it. Video coming in a few days on that.
@@TRDJon Dumb Idea.
Selling it cause it’s trash lol
No cuz I bought another and don’t need two.
No
Love your channel! IMHO if you want a full size get the F150 Raptor
Would love to own one in the future.
I get about 17.9 mpg on a long trip. It does looks better with larger tires ,but I am not willing to sacrifice more mpg.
Wait till you throw that supercharger on, mpg will get worst.
So the question is, if you were in the market for a used truck would you get a 2nd or 3rd gen?
What was not comfortable enough from this pickup truck to not use for family roadtrips? I guess besides trunk space vs truck bed.
My 2002 SR5 Tundra is more Camry like than my 2007 SR5 and the '02 is also quieter than my '07, in my humble opinion my 1st and early generation Tundra trucks are much better looking than any Tundra made after 2013.
Loved my 3rd gen
1st gen I mean.
I have a 2012 tundra and looking to keep it still.
4:09 completely agree. The poor turning radius is the first thing I noted on my 2025 Tundra. It’s atrocious.
Dont touch the engine. Its an abosulte gem. Change out the coolant asap though. Its best for its long term longevity.
It’s getting a supercharger 🤤
A v8 supercharged prerunner? That'd be amazing
That’s the dream.
@@TRDJon I wish it was possible to do a transmission swap with the 10speed for the v8 with supercharger.
I do t remember if you put a westcott 2.5 on your tundra or not but I'm wondering if you did or anyone else in the comments had an issue with the pre collision sensor malfunction. I can't seem to get it fixed. Any ideas?
