The Italian engine in the Ram needs to take a few shots of espresso to wake up because that lag is unacceptable and frankly unsafe. Chevy on the other hand has made a really impressive medium size diesel.

Enjoyed the video. Not sure that someone buying a diesel 1/2 ton is after speed. It's all about the mileage in my mind. Would be curious how they compare to the Hemi and 6.2L
Since turbo lag is a big deal on daily driving (and a real problem in certain manufacturers) maybe it could be a good idea to start making all tests without brake boosting. That can't be done every time when power is needed on daily driving.
Interested to see how well the GM 3.0L Duramax mods. This is one thing GM got right over FCA and Ford. A I6 is just a much better foundation to build a diesel on than a V6.
@danturbo316 yes, with iron cylinder sleeves. The most overlooked feature is the water-air intercooler that provides direct feed from the variable geometry turbo.
Great comparison! I currently drive a 1500 Silverado and love the idea of a diesel as my next 1/2 ton truck, BUT 1) Why are the Silverado’s tow ratings so much less than the Ram? 2) Has GM improved their quality over my current 2013 Silverado? Which has been the worst of any vehicle I’ve ever owned. I could list 15-20 different issues I’ve have with this truck over the past 4-5 years. Since the 3.0L diesel has the same torque output as the 6.2L, I expect with a max towing package it would easily be rated closer to its numbers.
Diesel trucks are not meant for speed... But I will say that I'm going to be leasing a 3.0 duramax soon, MPG numbers are better than ram and previous ecodiesel has been unreliable.
The 10spd gearing is spaced closer together on the Silverado(less lag too, but it is added by the 10spd trans as well). That makes a TON of difference, especially on a diesel. The 3.21 and 8spd RAM just won't cut it in the guise. Test the Ram with the optional 3.55 or 3.92.(not sure if Chevy offers optional gears).
Going by the specs in australia the v6 diesel is 11.9L/100 but the 5.7 petrol is 12.2L/100. So the petrol v8 makes way more power, more torque, uses the same amount of fuel (petrol is cheaper here compared to diesel as well), is $10k cheaper and sounds better. Seems like the ecodiesel is a bit of a flop in my eyes!!!
Most said the RAM would be faster because it had the most low end torque & horsepower. I predicted the Chevy would win in the last video. That 10-speed in the Chevy must be helping. The rear ends are near identical so you really can’t argue that.
The Ram only has a very narrow portion in the RPM range where it is above the Chevy. So we have one with a very flat torque curve, that peaks just slightly lower than the other one. Meanwhile, at all points other that the Rams peak, the Chevy is producing better power. Both before, and after the peak. Too much focus is given to the peak numbers, and not nearly enough attention is paid to area under the curve. It's the difference between having a number to brag about, vs actual engine performance.
By the numbers, the Chevy makes 460lb-ft of torque from 1500-3000RPM with 95% of that available at a low 1250RPM. the ram has 480lb-ft of torque peak at 1600RPM and drops off from there. Chevys horsepower is 277hp@3750rpm vs the ram is rated at 260hp@3600RPM.
Suggestion: How about a 0-60 with the auto start/stop feature enabled? No brake torquing or building revs. Just foot on brake with engine auto-off like as though you are waiting for a opportunity on a short/busy on ramp then floor it. It would be more interesting to know how they respond then.

the class leading lie, ram has higher "peak torque" but if you compare the full powerband of each truck chevy's straight 6 is on top of torque the majority of the time.
Exactly! I have pointed this out before, but the Chevy haters being out in full force, simply assume I am being a fanboy. Honest truth, this 3.0 Duramax has a FAR more broad powerband. Peak torque coming on at a lower rpm compared to the other two, and peak horsepower being a higher number at a similar rpm to the others. All of that means that this engine produces its torque earlier, AND it continues making that torque over a larger rpm curve. That makes a very pleasant driving truck. One that should never feel like you caught it unprepared.
@@ChrisRash the 10spd probably didn't hurt, but the Ram only makes >90% torque for a blink of an eye from 1600-2500rpm, compared to the Duramax >90% torque from 1200-3000rpm. Take away half it's gears and it would still smoke the Ram.
Idea for expanding on the drag race. For trucks you could attach a trailer to each truck with an identical weight to see if there’s a difference to the result while under load.

Ram max towing is 12,500lbs and Chevy with the Duramax is only around 9,000? That's a major performance issue even if the Chevy has better acceleration.
It's the electronic throttle on the ram that is also making it so slow. Even the 2nd gen was super slow. If you use a pedal commander it really helps out things a lot. The Chevy seems to be a lot better from the take off though.
All of the technology they dump into these things is just ridiculous. I see nothing wrong with offering it, but at least give me the option for an affordable, basic truck. A/C, power windows, a decent radio and the powertrain of my choice. Nothing more.

I would really like to know in the descriptions, what gearing your trucks have when you test them. Did the RAM have the standard 3.21 gearing, or the 3.92? Also, what was the Silverado rocking?
They really need to come to Montana and do the tow test on HWY 93 between Polson and Kalispell. There are at least 3 hills steeper than the gauntlet. There are lots of up and down hills. Areas where you are going downhill and into a lot sharper corner than they have and then right back into a big hill right as you come out of the corner where you have been off the throttle. I have yet to see any truck pulling a trailer be able to maintain speed on this stretch of HWY for more than just a few miles due to all the hills and corners. Their I-gauntlet is week in comparison.

Do these two diesels verse the 3L Powerstroke in an F-150
they're both faster and more efficient than the ferd ua-cam.com/video/0o9VAvz_59s/v-deo.html
@Dirty Harry lol like the "brand new" rangers...and the legendary F-150 battery fires...nothing goes up in flames quite like a ford does.
@Dirty Harry Ford has always been known for fire hazzard recalls.
@Dirty Harry here's a very short list...

You know when the very first drag race took place?
Less than a minute after the second car was built. 😂
Chevy rules, dodge drools!
Chevy SUCKS! Ram sales higher! 😊
Whoa! That Silverado has a black steering wheel badge. I have the black pack on my gasser and it doesn't have that! Looks like a trip to the parts department is in order.
Normally not a fan of truck racing comparisons but really enjoyed this, TFl ftw. Silverado almost as fast as an 80s Testarosa - 😅
Really good video, can’t wait for the Ike videos of these 2!
Really would appreciate a vid on the 2019 ram 1500 with the 3.21 4x4 BigHorn please
Is this ram different on the ike you said 3.55 ratio
Also curious about this. The identical red Ram from the mpg loop had a 3.55 as well, and I'm assuming these are the same truck. You could only get the Ecodiesel with either 3.55 or 3.92 rearends in the 4th gen Ram trucks and I doubt that's changed for the 5th gen trucks.
@@bretmarstellar603 3.21 or 3.92, no 3.55 for new Ram Eco diesel
How about some retro tests on the Ike Gauntlet for those buying used trucks and SUVs? Some GMT900s would be nice to see.
I'd like to see a discussion and comparison of the cabs and what the extended cab versions are like to live with.
I have the extended version and I dont regularly haul people, but when I do they have more than enough room. The only complaint is that the entry doors are a bit small.
@@bmartinez2086 thanks!
It's all "Fun and Games" until California makes diesels illegal...
Umm they can't charge their teslas with how bad PG&E are and half the state is on fire at the moment so soon no one will care what they think.
Why would California get rid of a far superior fuel source?
@@matthewlawrence2181 a proven history of ruining all things that are fun and good like booze on a beach or not bankrupt?
@@matthewlawrence2181 :Because they can! It's California! LOL
Imagine how impressive a Voltec Duramax truck would be.
Ram needs to fix the turbo lagging. Chevy needs a redesigned oil pump. Maybe in the next few years.
Hello Roman &Andre’! I have an idea for the future. While you guys are in different trucks using walkie-talkies to communicate with each other, why not do away with them and use your cell phones, through the Bluetooth systems in the trucks, so your hands are free and you could talk like you’re in the same truck!
Why is the base model RAM heavier then the Chevy with snow in the bed?
The Silverado has less weight due to having more aluminum on the body
If I where Ram I think I would just drop the Ecodiesel and pick the 5.0L V8 Cummins Nissan just dropped.
Completely different applications. The Ecodiesel is aimed towards fuel economy, the 5.0L Cummins is aimed for midsize power.
@@rooh5825 Yea pretty sure that 5.0 cummins doesn't get that great economy. it isn't that much better then what size motor in HD ram gets if any.
It gets less than the eco diesel does. I wouldn't mind seeing the 4BT Cummins (a four cylinder diesel based off of the 6BT) in the 1500.
Beleve it or not in 2010 ram was going to put the 5.0 cummins in the half ton, but got benched. Then they went with the eco diesel cus its actually efficient, the 5.0 Cummins does no better on fuel then the 6.7 cummins.
I usually like the look of the Ram compared to the Silverado, but in this comparison, I'd take the Chevy all day! And then they raced...
I just got the 1500 3.0 duramax good truck
I Loved The Duramax I6 Diesel, Because It's A Giant Killer.
The Ford 1/2 ton diesel was 9.3 first year production. We want to see real world towing comparisons between the three on one video please even if it’s a montage of videos
race to major (expensive) repair needed. Will either make it over 150k?
Ram transmission takes a fat shit as soon as the warranty is up
Cant wait for mods on the I6 chevy. Imagine how its going to sound
Do you have a video of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V6 racing itself with the Hemi? Curious about 0-60.
There were several diesel mini pickups in the 80’s
Inline diesels are so
much better, smoother, and fuel
Efficient. Gmc’s inline V6 was awesome too as one of wards best engines. Peppier than 5.3 and fuel efficient.
I love this series.
How about a drag race between the new ram eco echo diesel vs the old eco before and after the system update
What is the price difference between the two trucks?
5.3l 10-speed test
I’d still go for the ram! Diesels aren’t meant for speed...
Then you would have loved the old 350 Oldsmobile diesels !
Jeff Gantt probabaly would of! All the old stuff was better built, lasts longer, and was affordable! Now look at them...
I would love to see a drag race between these two trucks with an equal weight trailer attached to both. I have a feeling the results would be opposite to what was obtained here...
Why would it be opposite? The Chevy just destroyed the ram without a trailer and has a better 10 speed vs 8 speed transmission. Straight six for the win.
Wish you would have included the f150 diesel in the mix
Would have been better.
Have you done a OFF ROAD test for Silverado 1500 Duramax. Lots of towing video no Off roading.
"Spooling my turbo, and scratching my ass!" LOL. Good one Roman!
Where is the ike Gauntlet Sprinter van!? Both the 2.1 and the 3.0 both need to do the Ike!
I wish they (ford check or ram) would do a 4.0 liter 1/2 ton diesel.
About a truck length? Try a city block.
Straight 6 puts more torque to the rear wheels. If I ever buy a government motors I would get the 1500 with the straight six diesel.
@Don Olypopper Emphasis on the if. I've never owned a government motors. Ram 3500 DRW with the 408 cid cummins is my choice.
@Mr Sunshines Don't know why/where you coming with that. I don't really care if they were the first to pay it back or not. All I commented on was a straight six and if I was to buy one. So don't know why you are trolling that with your comment. And another I dont drive a ford either I drive a Cummins that, happens, to be in a Dodge Ram.
My comment was NOT any thing about bailout money by who, what where or when.
Congrats to the Ram for not having a catastrophic powertrain failure.
Chevy❤❤❤
