this sealed terrarium WILL outlive me

- David Latimer made a terrarium in 1960 that is still alive today! It was opened once in 1972 and since then has remained sealed shut from the outside world. It was planted with a single Tradescantia cutting and I'm going to try and recreate this exact terrarium.

I won’t be alive
I have a reminder set😅
I've had my eye on making a permanently sealed terrarium since December, this is real inspiring!! 🙌
Same
Could you make more videos checking in/giving updates on old terrariums? I just think it would be so cool to see how some of the terrariums you've made are doing after months or years on their own!
Forreal and his voice is so nice to listen to while trying to sleep 🥹🖤
Yes
I agree that would be pretty cool
We built a terrarium in school when I was 7 years old. Last time i visited that school I was 19 and it was still alive :)
That is so cool!
My neighbors, the Hillarys, had a beautiful terrarium. They were in their seventies, but they let me in every day to stare at their terrarium in their living room. A tiny rainforest with miniature porcelain animals and people. I was about three years old. Thank you, Mr. And Mrs. Hillary!
I saw David Latimer's terrarium some time last year and since then I've been interested in the hobby. Not so long ago I got my first container and after that containers just sort of popped up all over the place. I'm surprised how many people have great glassware just hanging around somewhere waiting to house life. Anyways, I'm looking forward to filling my office with life and appreciate the videos you make available here on UA-cam.
Crazy thing is there will perhaps be comments here- many years, decades, from now where UA-cam is littered with all these golden gems of intent from people - maybe long gone and in the past.
I hope I’ve grown and succeeded and am still around to see some of it.
David Latimer,
You are an amazing, patient, genius. Thank you for sharing with the world
If John Cena and Heath Ledger had a baby
Can't unsee it now 😄
If only more people would realize that if we can make a sustainable terrarium with a set of basic rules to help it last forever, we can do the same for our planet to help stabilize it and recover from the terrible unsustainable imbalance we've caused.
This video was a little different than your usual terrarium builds but I like it a lot!! 👍 I'm thinking about building a demijohn terrarium myself but I have to find the proper plants first - I don't think our native ones would make it..
Yup past weeks I’ve been struggle with my mental health, and I agree with you it helps me go through it. Thank you so much, i found you on tiktok and now always ur vids here❤ thank you
Fairly new to terrariums. I've built 1 that's still going and filled it with local plants. I live in central Texas where it's very humid during a lot of the year, so I figured they'd do well in the enclosed environment. Added a few pillbugs, a beetle, and an earwig. I've noticed a bunch of tiny creatures crawling around it, either mites or springtails. Question I had is, is it possible to "overfeed" the animals in it? There's a good bit of dead plant matter in there, but I also added in a dead gecko I found, some small slices of apple, and a few potato wedges. Sorry for the long comment, love the videos!
Worst case scenario is that the food becomes moldy or nasty before it can get eaten. The isopods and springtails should clear it up even if it's got mold on it. Make sure the terrarium isn't getting overtaken by mold and you should be fine.
Couldn’t say I knew I’d be learning about terrariums today but I’m sure glad I am
Bro I woke up trying to do homework now I'm here
The atomsphere in the video is legendary! Just like the terrarium!
What a beautiful story of strength and resilience. Art is mimicking life.
I saw the article on David’s terrarium years ago and am finally making my own version. I have a 12gal Pyrex and a 6gal Carboy. I’m also adding some isopods and some mosses, different plants. I wonder if David’s plant choice just ‘maxed out’ and worry a little that overgrowth will occur. Also guesstimating amount of water such a large closed terrarium.
What a beautiful story of strength and resilience. Art is mimicking life.
What a beautiful and inspiring video, you’ve captured mine and many others’ attention with terrariums and can’t wait to follow your beginners guides to make my own. Love the videos and shorts ❤
It Would be nice to see the 63 years old terrarium in a future video and discuss with the maker!!
i havnt seen videos like these before but ill say i love it, quite different to your other terrariums nice job!
I loved your Videos so far, but this one is amazing. The editing, the humor and of course the information are on point. Thank you for your work.🥰
you look like john cena kinda
No he looks like Edison cavani
He looks handsome 😻💖✨
My mom has a jar just like this! Maybe i can convince her to let me use it lol
I never thought a subject like this could ever be relayed in such an entertaining way. Well done.
I hope UA-cam algorithms show me your update in 63 years
I made a jar terrarium that's 3 years old now with cape sundew plants, they eat springtails and springtails clean the terrarium but your long term jar terrarium is much bigger and I been trying to find the right jar but they are rare that size.
He is amazing this lad he really is!!
Amy from Liverpool
I bet one of your terrariums will live that long 😀
Hey man, this is truly fascinating. This right here is single-handedly the future of something huge!
Yea especially if you really research the plants to make like art work🎉
I love your videos, nature really gives us perspective on our lives! I am curious to know how you keep all of your plants and springtails when they are not yet in terrariums. If possible, could you make a video on this subject? Keep up the amazing work!
Always wanted to replicate that terrarium, i have no room for it tho so it's cool to see someone else do it
I'm glad I found this channel, I had no idea how much I like terrariums
63 years from now I'll be 90, at least i'll be grateful if only i got to see this terrarium at 50 years old
Would love a yearly update on this bad boy!
I just found your channel and I'm hooked.
Partly because terrariums are fascinating and partly because you look and sound like Robert Webb.
Dude you should try to collab with david latamer and get a shot with both your terrariums together!
Awwww so wholesome ❤ I love what you made here, man. I really like the ball you use as a cap, what is it?
I loved the part where he calmly tells his friend: you're a fu***ng idiot jajaja
I would add a flat rubberized piece of steel or magnet so you can clean windows to see it when it goes full algae!
Cool! I’m ready for an update on this one
1:41 he Looks like Minecraft Steve
You got me wanting to start making Terrariums. They look so kool. I also want a sliver play button so so so badly
you are doing great Sir, salute 💪
The diecast skyline is a great touch
Just found this channel and awesome video randomly and ol boy looks just like an alternate reality John Cena.
That is one of my favorite plants
It was hard to see, but it’s the soft looking one that’s like a fern, but it’s not a fur
This is such an interesting hobby.
5:10 Note to viewers: Do not confuse charcoal or activated carbon as being a disinfectant. It does have the ability to absorb microorganisms, but it cannot disinfect. I know this because I used to sell water filters and, in order to disinfect, they had silver in them. Silver is anathema to germs.
I finished mine today. I'm curious to see how it starts to develop inside
Great video!
Question:
Would adding some earth worms be a good idea? I was thinking about maybe some woodlice, too.
And I was wondering how you're going to seal it? How long to wait before sealing?
Thanks a lot!
This channel is so underrated...
Very cool guys. I'm so glad I found this channel
This video is amazing but I’ve just discovered your channel and thought one thing. You straight up look like Heath Ledger 😂😂. Still videos are great you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber
I'm not sure what those plants are called that you gave the kids at the end but here we call them wondering jews the purple ones. Also the very fine fern is that asperguse fern? I had one of those and loved how quickly it grew. I'd wake up in the morning and see a big shoot come out. It was beautiful. Great idea by the way. I remember hearing about that big one that guy had and I thought I would love to make one as well. But I thought I heard he said he kinda put it away and forgot about it behind closed doors like put under stairs or something like. 🤔
3:13 hello, fellow Tesco connoisseur
2:05 these shots :;)
When you hear your favourite tune from Epidemic sounds (at the start)
Another great video :)
Is this cork ball enough to seal this terrarium, though? Or is sealing it tight like David's terrarium not a priority at this point in the lifecycle of the terrarium?
I watched a video yesterday about "Springtail Olympics," sort of …
"Springtails Do Their Own Stunts | Deep Look"
(I'm not doing this as a link because YT likes to block them!)
See you in 63 years, hopefully 🤞🏾
Will you be sealing the opening?!
you should etch the date it was made onto the jar so people in the future will know how old it is
Still waiting for part 2🙏
Ben this one was so great 😁
Any update on this?
Nice video homie
“NOT IF I HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT” (pushes terrarium over)
Give your kids existential dread: easy
Good luck! 👨🌾🤞
that...ball on top doesn't look too permanent if I'm being perfectly honest
I have 12 years and I am from hungary and I love very much 😊
Okay so in some circles of theology there is the concept of the Firmament. This terrarium is conceptually the same thing
There's an Oasis juice cardboard that I see daily since 2014, I wonder if it counts as a terrarium as well?
Kinda jealous NGL. This man looks like the Lovechild of Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon Levit & I'm not even mad about it.
4:27 you already have a very long stick daddy 🥺
we ALL know that you cant help yourself with a lid like that we all know your gonna stick your tools inside there every 6 months
Was there ever an update?
URGENT: I NEED HELP LOOKING FOR A 8L FISH BOWL BUT I CANT FING ANYTHINGGG
PLEASE HELP ME
So, do you have to keep it unsealed for a while until it gets established? Just curious since it looks like you just set a stone ball on the opening. Cool, though. Ideas percolating in my head... 😉 😎☮
But what about care? Don’t even open it to let any air out?
Is there an update for this one?
The jungle shop 🤘🏻☮🤘🏻☮
I love the video so much ❤
why does he look like john cena
Couldn’t see him
Loved the video, makes me want to venture into terrariums from my aquarium obsession.
Btw, has anyone ever told you that you look like a skinnier version of John Cena?
By the comet ! May Sigmar watches over this terrarium.
See you in 63 years… I hope 🤞
I would love u too do a update until it’s like rlly over grown
Can we get an 8 month update?
YOU CANNOT FOOL ME, JOHN CENA!!!!!
it's been two months I want to see how it looks like today
You look like if Steve Coogan and John Cena had a baby.
Hopefully I make it to 98 to see the 63 year update video.
Man I thought it was health ledger for a sec
Maravilhoso. Parabéns ❤😊
Ok how about a one year update?
Who would have thought that heath ledger simply quit hollywood and started making youtube videos about terrariums 0.o
