Colby Badhwar - Why US Military Aid Package will not be Enough to Achieve a Real Ukrainian Victory

  • Ukraine will not succeed in liberating its lands without the provision of long-range missiles, argues Colby Badhwar. For Kyiv, the ability to strike operational and strategic targets deep inside enemy territory - i.e. inside Russia itself - is not a whim, but a crucial necessity. But are allies framing their strategy and aligning their production and logistic capabilities accordingly? The manufacturer of German TAURUS missiles has halted production due to a lack of orders. Meanwhile, Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains adamant in refusing to supply Ukraine with long-range weapons. Do the Western allies want victory, or merely prevent Ukraine from being annihilated by a revanchist Russian empire?

      From whom? This may very well be the last US package. And 5 years from now, when the ruzzians will still be attacking as long as their regime is in power (doesn't matter if Putin croaks), who will still be voting for a for more aid? The euros talk big but underdeliver. And the US is politically exhausted.

      Assuming Ukraine is able to maintain a stable aid level (lethal and otherwise) Russia can probably keep fighting for another 2-3 years. That’s likely all they’ve got unless China takes a more active role.
      Russia has a LOT of real estate to maintain & a comparatively small population to maintain it with. The 1990s population crash has left Russia with a very limited pool of working/fighting age men & most of the capable ones are either fighting, dead, or living abroad. And it’s not likely they’ll be coming back.
      China’s support for Russia has been lukewarm at best. Xi is very aware that the Chinese economy would struggle very, very badly without its trade with Europe & North America. It’s unlikely he’d risk that trade for Putin’s adventure. And without full-throated Chinese support Russia’s long-term prospects are grim.
      Plus, if Russia does come apart at the seams China will probably be able to take Manchuria back, perhaps as some form of loan collateral.

      If Europe (and Germany in particular) didn't have their heads completely up their own arses, EU states would be scaling up arms production and taking up the slack. The fact that this isn't happening is sheer lunacy.

      I think it's even unlikely that this will stabilize the lines. The last shipment of weapons from the previous approved congressional aid package was announced December 27th, so likely arrived in January. There was also 300 million worth of weapons sent in March from the presidential drawdown authority. This is just from the USA. Ukraine has never stopped getting weapons and they've been on the back foot since July. They ave a serious manpower problem, and nothing short of nato intervention is going to fix that. This summer is not going to bode well for ukraine.

      Looked like Russia and America could be friends for a while there, after the U.S.S.R. shattered. After all, I'm not sure that the U.S. and Russia are truly natural enemies. We only really compete in the Arctic, in a mild way -- and conceivably we could cooperate there to our mutual benefit, if we really wanted to. But Putin needed an enemy to smear his political opponents as traitors instead of having to describe them as honorable opposition. He could also blame all his failures on the U.S. and its "puppet states" and vassals. And the U.S. has naturally opposed the reconstruction of the U.S.S.R. under a new name and guise. Old habits died hard on both sides, and a round 2 of rivalry seemed fairly natural, unfortunately. Russia really needed a person in charge who could embrace the new era, instead of an amoral KGB retread nostalgic for the "good old days" of the Cold War. The world would be so different now had such a hero emerged and prevailed!

    He’s right that this won’t be enough. But does it need to be? How do we find Ukraine managing on its own through growing their civil economy and arms production? How do individuals and businesses ally with Ukraine to help them fight off Russia so they reacqiure the land they had back to 1991 borders?
    The sea drones they now have continue becoming more innovative. Can they eventually be used to dominate the Azov Sea? Can they be used to begin a new battle front to match the front on the west side of the Donbas?
    Can domestic built air drones be used as long range weapons?
    How much does reconnaissance and intelligence help Ukraine? How much observation is needed to target supplies going to the front lines, to starve them to the point Russian front line forces collapse?
    What role can Conscientious Objectors have in speeding up the day of peace, when this war will end? Both Russia and Ukraine have deserters and likely have some people who are court martialed and are serving jail time for not fighting. But what can COs do in an active nonviolent way to work for peace?

    In 2022 US military aid was $8B. In 2023 it was $12B. Russia spent $110 bn on the war in 2023 in absolute USD, which in PPP was $250-270 bn. Math?

    • @toby9999
      @toby9999 Місяць тому

      So, Ukraine is a whole lot more effective per $ than is ruzzia? I think this was the case. Pretty sure ruzzia was firing thousands of shells into open fields etc.
      As to aid amounts from all contributers, total to date is more like 200B. Not all was for direct supply of weapons, and not all has been delivered, but I think your 20B is wrong. Additionally, I wouldn't believe any of the ruzzian figures. They lie about everything.

    • @arickfakhar1717
      @arickfakhar1717 Місяць тому

      A rough example without true figures (I don't have access to true Russian figures).
      It's not really about PPP. But the ppp ratio russia-us is ~1.52. This means it coats Russia $1.52 to purchase what the US can for $1. So, a $200bn purchase in Russia is equivalent to a ~$131.5bnnpurchase in the US. With US aid being a total of around $120bn combined witht the EU's ~$60bn for military aid, Russia is at a purchasing disadvantage.
      The real problem is things like this. In the US, one 155mm artillery shell costs around between $5-$6k to make. In Russia, a 152mm artillery shell costs $600.
      That means, in converted rough costs, Russia could produce almost 6 shells for the cost of one US shell for the same $. And that is just shells.
      The issue is that Western munitions and systems use many more advanced parts, and wages are so much higher. Even with the PPP advantage, the cost of procurement is heavily in Russias favor. Although, if the West produced a similar tech level of weapons, the West would far out produce Russia (roughly 1.52x in pure ppp comparison).

    • @arickfakhar1717
      @arickfakhar1717 Місяць тому

      @timthetiny7538 Yes, a $ does go further in Russia. But PPP is a comparison of the cost of goods, not a comparison of currency value. The PPP conversion ratio was, in fact, ~1.52:1 in Q1 2024. The US has a better PPP than Russia. This is public information, and anyone can find this data.
      PPP ratio of Country A:Country B = (Price of a product in country A) / (Price of the same product in Country B)
      For the calculation to work, you have to have the same stoichiometry, which means you have to put both into terms of the same currency. So, a coffee in Russia in 2023 was ~ 644.4 rubles. Converted to dollars, that is $7.24.
      In 2023, a coffee in the US costs ~$6.16. So, 6.16/7.24= .85 PPP US compared to Russia. Or 1.17 PPP Russia compared to USA.
      So, in 2023, in Russia, a coffee cost 1.17 times what it cost in the US. Thus, the US had a better PPP. In 2024, we have seen the PPP gap widen in US benefit.

    the strategy is very simple as biden says as long as it takes in short the only way Ukraine will win is to do attrition vs. Russia.
    Many misconceptions on that Russia is the master of attrition , in this war its not , yes they may have a bit bigger economy and population and military compared to Ukraine but the Russians are on a time limit. Their national wealth fund is set to run out in 2025, even shoigu himself stated they can support the war until 2025. and I think the Russian economy will warp badly if the war goes past 2025. the war is already costing from 400 mil to 1 bil usd every day for the russians.
    and analysts say the Russian cold war stocks of tanks and apcs will run out by late 2025 and into 2026. this will result in the russian production and refurbishment of tanks and apcs to be cut by 2/3s. Russians will have a tank shortage. this will be very detrimental to the russian ability to fight.
    true the ukrs are on the backfoot now but the front line despite Russian succcesses in the battlefield has not really changed, on a strategic scale the Russians have not reaLLY expanded from the 20 percent they control
    and when biden wins this year 2025 and onwards will be horrible years for the russians.
    russians have to win by 2025 or its the point of no return.
    Sure the Russians may get a korean war style win armistice with russia getting control of the 20 to whatever percent of Ukraine but the russian economy and military will be so ruined and their economy in military mode and cant switch over to civlian due to lack of western investments , their economy will implode within a decade of the end of the war. and whatever territory they conquered and get to keep in ukraine they have to repair and pacify. that would cost hundreds of billions of usd.
    I can see a ciivl war happening in russia or some sort of time of trouble 2.0 whether russia loses or "wins" this war.

    I think this fear of "600km to Moscow could be achieved by a Taurus missile" is wrong.
    1. The missile needs to be launched from a fighter plane. That plane cannot go right to the Russian border from where Moscow is situated at a distance of 600km. The Russian air defense will keep any Ukrainian plane some 100km from the border. So Moscow cannot be reached.
    2. Why should Moscow be attacked by a Taurus? Makes no military sense. Better hit more functional objects.
    3. The only reason of Scholz refusing is to keep a military secret. As in the maps installed in the guidance systems.
    4. And perhaps he sees it as simple man's nuke. If it should fail to be the "decisive weapon" then the deterrent value would be gone.

      Depends on the end goal. I doubt Putin's goal was to be stuck in Donbas after two years of war, but now any village the Russians occupy is shown as a victory back home. Ukraine needs to set realistic goals and the main one now is to limit what Russia can take in the next few months. The longer the war drags on the more weight on Putin's shoulders and the far right could start causing trouble back home.
