  • Joe Lindsley is a traveller and a writer, and American reporting on Chicago's WGN Radio from Ukraine each and every weekday of Russia's full-scale war. He once was protégé to Fox News founder Roger Ailes, but Lindsley escaped that frenzied world where power mattered more than truth. He came to Lviv for a Ukrainian Catholic University journalism conference on Information Overload, AI, and Responsibility. Then the Coronavirus shut down world travel, and he stayed to build a better vision for the media industry.

Thanks Joe for mentioning that during Maidan there were no lootings, violence to nearby businesses or just random people! It was peaceful protest but people had to defend themselves when violence was used against them. So much appreciance to Joe, he understands what's happening for real and trying to explain it to others, respect this man

      @GrahamCStrouse 8 місяців тому +2

The Maidan protests were so different from Occupy or The Arab (False) Spring or most of the recent college protestors. Maidan was not a wild mob or a bunch of kidiots trying to score social capital. Maidan was all about people who wanted to be free. There was nothing performative about it. I’ve seen the same character in the Georgian protests.

Joe Lindsley is the best foreign journalist and reporter in Ukraine that I know of, because he is so connected with people, spirit and culture of Ukrainians. He even understands the "ghost" of Maidan. When at the slightest dissatisfaction of the people government changes their original intentions. It is hard to do it during the war, but even during the war this spirit is still pretty much alive.

Agree with y’all! Ukrainians have shown us all what a determined people can do for their future. We have perhaps forgotten that freedom is not free at all. Texans are with the Ukrainian people. Stay the course. Fight and win.

I will never fail to tune into updates and stories about the war in Ukraine. Remaining informed and being able to speak intelligently to my family and friends about the war in Ukraine is the absolute least I can do to support Ukraine in their efforts to free their country from the Russian aggression.
Speaking truth in the face of Russian propaganda helps to keep the support going in a country so far away.

yep, that's the upshot of this particular invasion, it's so transparent bcuz the entire Ru/ussr way of doing all things was always constant chaotic deception, grandiosity and theatrics; And due to cameras in everyone's hands, it was very easy to document their atrocities early on in invasion, and then ongoingly even worse, the torture of individuals, including up to half the population of an entire medium sized city of Kherson (large by many countries' scales. The scale is absolutely almost beyond anything the third reich did in cities of such size. Ru must be contained, one way or another.

Ukrainians do and are forced to beg to get the tools to do it. Thanks for this interesting conversation. I wanted to add a reminder that protesters during Maidan literally fought battles with security forces, and at the end government loosed snipers against civilian protestors, with the "100 of the skies" casualties being commemorated with an annual celebration. Once the revolution was "over" in the city square, the same people took arms in Donbass. I would not say it was a "people not burning down their city" type of deal. While it was certainly a unifying and colourful protest, the corrupt politicians in power litterally tried to drown it in blood.

I would love to find out if his show is syndicated, so we all can listen to it in our local radio stations. Will you please ask him to do that if it isn't already please? Another great show thanks.
For me it's all about the children. Never forget all of the Russians who abused children and their families in Ukraine. From the mass graves (in Izium) to the stolen children. Now if Ukrainian parents don't become Russian citizens and go to flight against their brothers and cousins Russia will take their newborn children at birth.
Speaking of Izium. What did those 414 people see? The Russians thought it was better to murder them and bury them all in a mass grave instead of letting them testify. Whatever they saw must have been truly horrific. At minimum I'm guessing rape and torture.
If Russia want's to sign😅 a treaty they must first prove they will stand by one. If Russia wants to negotiate, start with your original written agreement. Pull back all of their troops back behind their original boarder and then you can start negotiations. If they don't show they will honor the original agreement how can you expect them to honor any further agreements.
It's our war to lose. Russia can NOT win. Unless we choose to not support Ukraine of course. It is on us in the global West to pick the world we want to live in. Choose wisely. Thanks.
Glory to Ukraine. God Bless Ukraine and her people. 🇺🇦🇺🇸

The Maidan revolution was successful because it wasn't peaceful. If it had remained peaceful, it would have been drowned in blood just like every protest in Syria, Libya, Iran and Belarus. Instead, there was organized combat, and the Right Sector prevailed. This is the story that is often ignored.
I appreciate Joe Lindsley, but he's wrong here. Unarmed protests don't work against armed regimes. That's why there are Georgian and Belarusian units fighting in Ukraine right now. They know they will have to organize armed revolutions to rid their countries of their overlords. Absent external pressures, only violence brings down dictators.

Mr Lindsley is a journalist who carries forward the muckraking tradition of Chicago greats like Upton Sinclair rather well. He came to Eastern Europe to find muck but instead found, surprisingly, the muck in modern Europe is almost always tinged Russian in colour, except for instances of bungled Western aid to Ukraine to fight Russia and poor Western strategies to deal with Russia. Great guest!

I disagree. Joe is a friend… he doesn’t go anywhere to find muck… he mines for the good in others and practices getting shit done … nuff said

When the guest shared his thoughts about Ukrainians, I remembered a video with Boris Nemzov (Russian opposition leader killed by Putin), where he also talked about Ukrainians. This is not a direct quote, but it is close to the original: “Ukrainians have no respect, piety, or servility towards authorities. When Putin, or even the Western leader, enters the room, everyone rises and stands straight. When the Ukrainian President or prime minister enters the room, no one rises. I asked them: Why are you not rising? - Why would we? - they replied. Who are they that we should rise? Just another Hetman (top political/military leader in Ukrainian Kozak history). We are all Hetmans.”

Frankly, I've seen even the New York Times use the "passive" voice & have quit reading it

I practiced criminal defense law for 15 years, and that trial was a sham, the judge was obviously biased - and I've tried cases in front of biased judges, and watched their sullen, angry, and chambers-door-slamming temper tantrums when the jury came back and acquitted my client. Been there, done that. There's enough abuse of discretion and reversible error in that case to sink that conviction in any neutral tribunal. I don't particularly care for Trump's stated policies, and have never voted for him, but that trial was just shameful, a dark day in American jurisprudence.

This info bubble is real- we must get out of it somehow - many more people need to see through this without their comfy lenses of isolationism.

When I think of Ukraine and demonstration I think of Wat Tyler and the peasants of England facing down King Richard II in 1381.

All democracies will be challenged as long as we keep losing investigative reporters due to funding loss from circulated print. Especially in rural areas. Who will check corruption?
I hope it doesn't take a huge disaster to bring Americans together.....but it might.
Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦. Your folks are prayed for every day.🙏🏻🇺🇸

Was the Maidan informed by the brutal history of Ukraine from Russian revolution to Stalin's famines of the 1930s to WW2. The spirit of the people revealed and condensed at the Maidan seems to still be active across Ukraine today.
People who know their history are more likely to choose well between democracy and authoritarians.
