Solo Tones: Thoughts On Gain, EQ & Audibility - That Pedal Show
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 тра 2024
- In this episode we stumble around a general discussion on being heard when playing solos. A friend of Dan’s had asked him what he needed to think about tonally when starting to play guitar solos: it sparked an idea for a show.
Many of the concepts we touch on here have been covered in previous episodes, but they’re always worth a re-look for the already-initiated and close to invaluable for anyone new to the subject. Gain, EQ, volume… and a bit on delay, rounded up with five tips for better solo tones.

My wife is just leaving for a girls’ night; The kids are in bed; A TPS episode lands; it’s Friday evening in Oz. Gentlemen (and Gentleladies), this is what they call a perfect storm.
stew mcleod ditto cobber!!!!
Yewww!!! To all of the above. Evening fellas.
Turn it up to 11 bud
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE HOY HOY HOY!!!
Go the All Blacks !! (just jesting haha). My wife is also out for a girls dinner tonight... I have some beers chilling in the fridge and I think the kids need an early night
Damn Micks lead tone with that tremolo in the opening is incredible. The entire opening is extremely badass
very true! great choices on sounds.... especially love the part with dans solo
_The Gibson ES-335. For when 'conceptual compromise' (acoustic vs solid) instead feels just like having all you could ever desire_ :o)
mick is the king of "sitting right there in the mix"
You all probably dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Alonso Fisher instablaster =)
New T Shirt! It's not old school, it's THE SCHOOL.
"The sound guy hasn't got you. "
Sounds like a gatekeeper's call to arms.
It's fun to see your chemistry WHILE playing in addition to hosting. Fun show mates!
Not really a question, but my wife, who also bought me 2 TPS t-shirts for our anniversary, sat down with me towards the end of the video and recognized the Wampler Ego Mini from my personal board. Proud moment for sure. Excellent tips! Especially regarding less gain and working backwards volume-wise.
Took me years to realise I needed a clean boost in the loop to give me the volume boost for solos. It doesn't colour the guitar sound and gives me that little edge to come up in the mix as and when required.
Wonder how many of the thousands watching understand just how difficult it is to ALWAYS have something to play when those examples are required.
Lovely stuff gents, thank you.
That show was called something like Better Solo Tones for everyone. I consider it one of the best and most informative TPS episodes up to date! That's why I look forward to watching this one! That was a single and now you made a whole album of solo sound suggestions, tips and tricks! 😃
I liked your comment about thinking of your solo volume as needing to take over the space left by the lead vocal. In jazz, setting your solo volume to match the trumpet or sax is also a good place to start.
@David Malone - Most jazz players seem to understand the concept of "big ears" through training and experience. Except at the highest levels, most electric rock and blues players simply do not pay much attention to what others are playing, and the performance suffers as a result.
this here is the 'secret' to becoming closer to a pro level musician; learning to listen to everyone and adapt your dynamics accordingly
Lost count how many re-watches of this awesome episode... still Rockin guys... 45yrs and still counting...
every Friday the tps bell wakes me up..and though i still gotta go to work... somehow the weekend starts.. 👍🤘🎸
the TPS alert is also me Weekend Is Here alert lol!
Damn Daniel!!! That sweep 🧹 picking is freaking solid man!! You really rocked it out of the park in this episode. Let’s here more of this from you boy-o 😃
I am so grateful to you guys for talking about delay instead of reverb.
I find that sooo many people over use reverb with solos and I find that all it does is do the opposite of what they want. They want space and want to be heard.
But reverb usually pushes you back in the mix, where delay give you space but also clarity and audibility.
You’ve helped so many young players out there! Great job!
Nice trem at the start! Good hearing those guitars in a band context. More TPS Live dates please!
Holy shit that was an all time intro!!
My additions for soloing/gainstaging are
1. a fuzz to boost any drive pedal and clean up with guitar volume (old and new school?)
Also I noticed on clean tones a nice additional compression that keeps dynamics/transients natural with more focus on the mid frequencies at the same time
2. a boost pedal in the fx-loop to saturate the power tubes more
3. EQ Pedal: Negative EQing for tightening up the rhythm sound & pedal off for soloing (more bass/top end and volume)
Thanks for your work - useful & HQ!
3:10 Nice recovery from the jazz note. ;) (PS Amazing jam, kudos for not being tempted to edit the jazz out!)
Fellas, in light of the recent shows,I have a challenge for y'all. Please do a show on several small amps that have relatively large headroom and are reasonably priced. Amps that will allow the pedals to do a good part of the work (Like the Supro 1970RK) ...I believe that if y'all are going to fight the good fight against silent stages, more solutions need to be given as alternative to modelers/digital amps. Y'all did that with the Ox and BOSS tube expander and y'all have done a show on small amps. But we need a show on small amps with a lot of headroom that are for home use and gig worthy. Cheers!
Every time Mick dusts off the 335...it just slays me dead.
33 seconds in and a smile breaks out on my face. Massive, brilliant tone on all levels.
MANDATORY video lesson for every guitar player that wants to play solo's and be heard! Rearranging my boost/drive pedals as we speak!
Hi Guys, regarding Dan's comment for breathing while soloing and Mick's comment play half the notes, totally agree and what I often do is close my eyes to feel the music that your soloing over.I feel sometimes we tend to just listen to ourselves when soloing. great video and super info.
This episode has had some of the most rockin' lead & rhythm tunes in the history of TPS 🤘 flippin' love it! And tnx for covering this topic guys.
meh
Great episode! Nice work as always gentlemen.
Dan's gain sound is MEGA! Gorgeous melodic solo at the intro!
Perfect episode. Love the tracks for context.
Yay!! brunch with Mick & Dan.... strunilicious ! Sweet opening sounds !
a great jam to start out my friday morning at work. thanks guys!
Awesome show!!! Lots of great tips as always! Love loved the opening and ending jam demonstrating everything! You guys are awesome!! Thanks for doing the Pedal Show!!!!!!
If you want to be heard; give the sound guy your second loudest sound , volume knob on 6. Great show gentlemen. BTW love the play along with pre recorded tracks.
Love the jam things, please keep doing!!
That intro jam was incredible. I was about to skip and get to the content but it grabbed me. Ya'll need to record that shit.
Very good show, very informative and spot on. Thanks.
Didn’t know how much I needed this information in my life!! Thank you guys soooo much ❤️
Great topic. Loving the jams.
The martial artist Dan, brings breathing into guitar playing. I love it. I too am a martial artist. We bring breathing into everything!!
Great video guys! Really useful and covering a variety of genres. Thanks 😊
What a great episode! Thank you guys for all the awesome tones here and of course for the helpul tips! You rule! :)
Very valuable tips and insights here, thank you.
Wow guys! Absolute best jams to date.
The backing tracks are really helping you guys shine.
This intro was some magic.
Great ideas and great playing throughout the show.
Excellent video. Always great to reinforce understanding of basic principles.
GUYS! YOU"RE KILLING ME! For episodes like this I AM DYING to see how the amps are set! I think it really is important.
This video is not only useful for beginners, but also for people who don’t understand frequency content, dynamics and headroom.
I sometimes try and explain these very concepts to other guitar players, but I fail to simplify it as you did in this video.
Your videos are probably THE most important resource for guitar players, anywhere on the net! Brilliant. Cheers
Lots to learn here. Class!! 😊🎸
Guys, that opening jam was the coolest thing I've ever heard you two play (and that's not a statement made lightly, you dudes always kill it)
Great content! And both of you guys, your playing is tip top! I always feel inspired after watching the show...
That’s the best I’ve heard both of you play. Made me smile throughout 😊
Great episode!
Terrific episode! And I really love all the extra playing lately.
Some of the best sounds/jams I've ever heard you achieve are on here, guys. Bravo.
Awesomely stupendous backing groove gents, love it!
Oh man, I loooooove hearing you guys playing over those backing tracks. Adds a whole new exciting depth to experiencing pedals and sounds.
Great show! I was getting worried until the 45 minute mark though. I didn’t know it was even possible to play a solo without a delay on.
Another fantastic episode!
Nice sounds, playing (I really like the clean jam at 39:50) and some great tips.
Thanks!
Another friday, and another amazing bit of playing over a backing track. Some tasty bass lines to be had. Kudos to whoever recorded it.
What an amazing resource these guys have produced - it's 2021 and with the world opening back up again, we're finally getting back out there in new bands with new musical challenges, and TPS has the knowledge, information and wisdom already there, at our fingertips to help guide us on our way. Thank you!
For me, this was one of your most useful videos. Thanks guys!
These videos really help me out in my college ensemble situations . All my love from Wales, thanks guys!
Killer show cheers .
A very informative relevant and useful video! Great job!
the intro was quite good rocking! nice!
Excellent! Thanks for teaching about the "old school" method right up front. Great episode guys, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I remember the first 3 hour gig I did and after my first couple of solos I panicked since I knew I was out of ideas ha. That show really taught me pacing, what to practice and the importance of phrasing and economy. With regard tone, my lead tone is often cleaner than my rhythm sound. Like Dan said, I want it to come in like the vocals with a similar quality, cut and level. I also find for high gain, when it's needed, a fuzz will give a fat cutting sound while maintaining clarity (fuzz dependant of course).
So good!
I loved the intro jam - it’s magic when you both play together. I am glad that you’ve started doing that. Props to Fraser!!! The concepts in the show were presented really clearly. Thanks.
Thanks guys.
The intro jam reminds me so much of Queens of the Stone Age's "Fortress"
Dan's tone in the outro is just superb!
My favourite TPS intro yet. Loved that!
Superb video. Keep it up guys 👍🏻
I love your show. You two are a plethora of information and whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or a pro, there is always something to be learned.
❤ing the intro
Both of you your tone and your playing just keeps getting better and this new thing when you're actually using backing tracks and plane when your demo in the pedals is terrific some of the best stuff you've done on any show
Full on Rock - love you gents! Amazing how a little back beat and nifty bass line makes the guitar pop.
I think Pete Townshend on Live At Leeds is a good example of someone using the volume pot to "switch" between lead and rhythm. Also, the mid-song amp switch by swapping cords - brilliant! Will have to try that with my band :)
Thanks for doing stuff in practical applications. Really helps in the context of playing with other instruments. Much appreciated and good find in Fraser.
Dan’s shreddding at 27mins in is great!
WOW! I think you guys just played MY ass off,,, as well as yours. Great advice and gorgeous sounds. I was going to say "as always" but this was definitely even better than usual.
Ok. When this show came on, and that bass line started, it was back in my head. LOL. GREAT JOB!
Amazing Jam
that backing track is (again) so effing good. And I thought the delay length comparison was super helpful, thank you!
Thanks Dan & Mick. This episode contains some gold dust -I just wish the other guys in my band would watch and learn from it too.
Ive almost never use my tone knob before until I've got Allan Holdsworth playing ! That completely changed my perspective on solo tones. Those reedy/wind instrument sounds he could get by rolling back his tone knob are by far my favorite solo tone ever especially in Hard hat area where he was playing a modded dual-rectifier. He had an incredible control and musical approach over is compressed saturated tone. I know that it might not be everyone cups of tea but I found that whit his combination of tone/touch/melody created some of the most emotionals guitar solos ever.
great show, thanks
Love that "Paul McCartney" inspired Bass in the backing track.
Awesome, totally applying this for a gig next week!
YEAH!!!! That intro was badass!
Instant jams! Starting Friday off right!
Jams are SUPA! For giving examples!
And another thing. I've been contemplating the jrocket touch.
Thanks for featuring it. I had to get it after hearing what You guys did with it.
MORE GEAR, yeah!!!
The bit with the high gain sounds explains exactly why I’ve always struggled with amp in a box style pedals! Thanks for showing me properly how to boost a use a high gain tone! I was doing the exact opposite of everything you said in this episode!
Now that was just cool dudes. Your backing track? Great all around jam my friends. Both of you in your moment!
Best... tps ....jam...ever
What an intro! 🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely loved the J Rockett touch, really need to go and try one of those.
What an intro 👌🏻👏🏻
Well done Boys !!
Great sounding!!!
