A gem, 90's are coming back again. They will be sought after, need to get me one. Jarre used it a lot on revolutions album. Mostly presets, but hey, you know that. Thanks, these sounds bring me back. Times were interesting then with the dx7, d-50, wavestation and later jd-800. Just got back into hardware after a bit of a lay-off. Mininova, big sky combo atm, styles ambient, golden age of synth music and some deep house.
Yeah, the virtual D-50 from Roland sounds 100% identical to the original hardware. I actually believe it is the same original code and PCM samples running in a wrapper that allows Roland to package it as a VST. BTW it is the same with the System-1 and System-8 VST's. Brilliant stuff, worth every penny of the Roland Cloud subscription.
yes i think you are right thomas, agree! i read a post from roland on facebook that this will not be available as plug-out due to memory and hardware limitations, shame, but I'm stoked to have it in my vst library! no reason to own the real thing perhaps, dare I say it? we'll see after i've done the comparison.
Haha had me fooled. I know how much you love the D50. I have had one in storage for about 10 years, and have never really appreciated it until I came across your videos. Yes what a classic, the VST is a lot better than I had thought. Thanx for sharing. love your videos, never sure what you'll do next makes it more exciting. A real pleasure to watch.
Haha, nice trick! I was playing along to your video with the patches on the D50 plugin thinking, "man, this sounds identical to the real thing" and then I saw the "reveal"!!
Oh woody, wish you didn't title the video as you did as I presumed what u we're doing (l word). I'd quite like to have been shocked at the end really! :-/ Sounded fabulously clean. The d50 without doubt really blossoms in this environment.
I love Spacious Sweep. That made me love the D50 back in the days :) (and I also love the new D50 VST since it does not hum on the outputs like my real D50 :-)
to fix your stereo problem with the d50 ,its the volume slider .you need some super 10 sprayed in there or replace the slider .I spray mine every 6 months or so.
Before buying always check max keyboard velocity and aftertouch in D50 test mode. It's quite an issue and you won't hear the sounds' full dynamics. Unless you play it thru another keyboard or a sequencer. Also get Carl Johnson's banks Voltage Drift and Descent Into Madness they are just great.
Do you know how to control Spacious Sweep and make the begining of the intro not to fade in time, but to keep doing the same effect over and over again? Like woooooaaaaaooooowwoooaaaaaooooooww I'm not sure if I am being clear. Thank you.
Woody piano shack: can u make a video step by step. In what we need in order to get patches to a Yamaha dx7II from the beginning a lot of people don't know how to transfer patches from a pc to the dx7II FD.
The D70 is a rompler but has a D50 feeling too, there are some D50 patches in it and they sound really good. Check that : www.synthmania.com/Roland%20D-70/Audio/Factory%20Performances/61%20Prologue.mp3
Hi Woody, I was wondering what the name of the tune is you played in the beginning with the "Fantasia" preset. I've heard it on multiple occasions but I can't find the title for it :/ If you could supply me with it, that would be just great. Thanks :-)
EXCELLENT ! , Tubular Bells is probably the best piece of music to play when buying or checking out a keyboard , if its sounds good then buy it , for a plugin this sounds brilliant , well done Woody , a very nice mix you displayed and played today with a real twist ! ,EXCELLENT . 😎AK 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nice demo! The D-50 has always been one of my favorites. Take away the PCM- samples and just use the synth engine and you have a synth on par with ANY VA today, even better imo.
I agree, the PCM samples are incredibly dated, but if you only use the synth engine itself, you will end up with this lush and creamy sound, unlike anything else. It will sound as contemporary as you want it to be.
with the plugin gui it's now easier than ever to program the d50, so perhaps we'll be able to discover some new sounds. i'm looking forward to playing the new patches.
Web based D50 syx to bin converter by user beely(so anybody with sysex bank files can convert by himself, no need to wait Roland to include that function which can read sysex files ): www.difficultaudio.com Some of them are already converted by user beely: www.dropbox.com/s/owdr8l3ulp0s31p/cultofd50_for_plugin.zip?dl=1
Who can forget that first time when they first heard the D50 in 1987? Soundtrack was such a killing sound. Can't help but feel the Wavestation walks all over this but D50 was certainly the first time I had heard Synclavier/Fairlight/PPG level sounds on a machine in a local shop...
yes, the wavestation kind of blows it away just a couple of years later, things were progressing rapidly in the digital synths of that era! you never forget the first time you played the d50 :)

"oh nice, a D-50 video." Right away, "MY CHILDHOOD NIGHTMARE SOUNDTRACK!" haha.
Yeah, the virtual D-50 from Roland sounds 100% identical to the original hardware. What a special synth, feel like I've heard so many sounds from this one before. I grew up in the 80's but this has a ring of childhood for me!
for me too dudley. well i was a teen back then :)
1:34 Timbre do tema nostálgico do PlayStation 1 ! 😍
Sounds like a dream, a trip. Nice.
haha..nice surprise at the end
Yup! That Midi out cable was a little suspicious ;)
and the word "legendary" in the title was also a clue... :)
Haha had me fooled. I know how much you love the D50. I have had one in storage for about 10 years, and have never really appreciated it until I came across your videos. I'm a simple man, I see D-50 I click on the video. Great sounds!
way to go Zenith, cool that you digged the vid.
Thank you Woody! Nice demo, i love your channel! And now i love AGAIN the d50! i Want one so much...
You got me! Looking forward to the upcoming videos
haha, great! no way to know until the reveal.
Very nice demo, Woody! I am glad to see that D-50 becomes a trendy again, especially with the new emulation that Roland presented recently.
glad you liked it georgios! not sure if it's trendy, not really noticing a revival in 80s digital synths, or am I wrong?
Among all the synths I've been collecting over the years, I often end-up playing the D-50! :-))
Good work, Gareth!
hi gully, yes it will be enjoyable to explore all the new patches available in the plugin.
Oh yes, already expecting it!! :-)) Thanks Gareth.
if you had played it from a controller keyboard, everyone would be like, "yeah, but it just doesn't sound as good as the original!"
yes, the visual presentation probably does affect how people perceive the audio.
Haha, nice trick! I was playing along to your video with the patches on the D50 plugin thinking, "man, this sounds identical to the real thing" and then I saw the "reveal"!!
I never get tired of all the Numan phrases ❤️
i was so into tubeway army as a kid :)
Woody Piano Shack me too. Big influence on how I write music to this day. 👍🏻
D-50 sounds apsolutly amazing Woody,
great demo,
have a nice time and excellent weekend
Daro🎹👉👍👈😉
thanks daro, cheers for checking out the vid!
Oh woody, wish you didn't title the video as you did as I presumed what u we're doing (l word). I'd quite like to have been shocked at the end really! :-/
Sounded fabulously clean. The d50 without doubt really blossoms in this environment.
so i shocked you at the end? that's great that you at least made it that far, thanks!
Man way to go with this demo! Love the twist 😎
Amazing what "they' can do these days... *(The "they" refers to the surprise at the end)* Great video as always Woody!
thanks xavier, and glad I got you with the surprise :)
What song is that from? 2:57
I love Spacious Sweep. That made me love the D50 back in the days :) (and I also love the new D50 VST since it does not hum on the outputs like my real D50 :-)
yes andrew, vintage hardware has it's drawbacks :)
to fix your stereo problem with the d50 ,its the volume slider .you need some super 10 sprayed in there or replace the slider .I spray mine every 6 months or so.

you can replace the keyboard aftertouch with an expression pedal though
Do you know how to control Spacious Sweep and make the begining of the intro not to fade in time, but to keep doing the same effect over and over again? Like woooooaaaaaooooowwoooaaaaaooooooww I'm not sure if I am being clear. Thank you.
Soundtrack is the best patch ever made :)
yes!
Woody piano shack: can u make a video step by step. In what we need in order to get patches to a Yamaha dx7II from the beginning a lot of people don't know how to transfer patches from a pc to the dx7II FD.
i think i have a video about transferring to DX7mk2...? you'll have to search my channel.
you should sale presets for vst d-50 synth!! I would buy them
Hello! great demo, nice surprise indeed!
Does the hardware D50 have a Prologue patch or recreation that sounds as good as the one the D70?
Thank you!
you could probably make it, most people say that the d70 sounded worse than the d50, the d70 was more of a rompler.
The D70 is a rompler but has a D50 feeling too, there are some D50 patches in it and they sound really good. Check that :
www.synthmania.com/Roland%20D-70/Audio/Factory%20Performances/61%20Prologue.mp3

If you could supply me with it, that would be just great.

It's Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield :)
Thanks a lot!
Intruder fx is so awesome
For a moment I was surprised not to see the Roland Cloud version... Until I noticed the midi cable!
bravo gustavo!
Bitter sweet symphony on track 2
Wow! the part you play with the patch "soundtrack" sounds alot like a part of the Song "Tier" by Rammstein! AMAZING! :)
never heard that song, so pure coincidence! everything sounds great with that preset.
EXCELLENT ! , Tubular Bells is probably the best piece of music to play when buying or checking out a keyboard , if its sounds good then buy it , for a plugin this sounds brilliant , well done Woody , a very nice mix you displayed and played today with a real twist ! ,EXCELLENT .

cool that you recognised the track, thanks for the comment and thumbs!
btw. the d50 revival started with Justin Biebers - Sorry. pretty sure his brass sound is one of the presets on the d50.
Sweet!

Spacious Sweep totally reminds me of the original PlayStation startup sequence.
Anybody get a chance to try out the "D-05" module yet?
me, checking it out now :)
Top sounds top 80s!!!!!
The ending of this video was shocking ...at least for me :D
i love to read that, i was hoping to catch people by surprise.
Oooo intruder fx = live intro to Down In The Park :-)
I don't like digital keyboards because some replicate instruments well i like them because some can make really nice pads.
1:34 and that's how Playstation One's startup sound was made
Not a big fan of the D series but this was a good one.

The magic of aftertouch...
The Fantasia patch even has the subtle audio clicks that occur on some of the higher notes. Just like the real thing.
Aahhhh, you bought another one Woody ;-)) LOL
not exactly rik, but I knew the vst was coming and pre-recorded some performances in preparation :)
I wonder if the VST can load all my collected patchbanks...
Very digital sounding, but much better than it's competitor DX7!!
Two different worlds... LA & FM
Well... it IS digital. And that is not necessarily a dirty word.
It took me less than two seconds to smash the thumb's up... I mean, Tubular Bells! How not?
jon, we are brothers in arms. thanks for smashing!

Hahaha I thought so :D
Can't believe I sold mine with all the cards back in 1993 for £250!!! WHAT A COMPLETE TWAT I WAS!!!!!!! 😢😢
Run it through a tube amp like you would a guitar.
I knew this sounded too clean.
Exorcist
and not a single jarre tune. :)
It's a shame really ! ;)
ok, sorry KEK. I will take that as a request and we'll sort that out in upcoming vids :)
Good plan! Maybe you could have a go at "Industrial Revolution part I" :)
