It is also one of the most elusive, unknown and underrated boots out there.
After months of searching and research I finally found my ultimate boot.
I created this vlog as sort of a guide to the Austrian Field Shoe Light.
How to find it, where to find it, design, aesthetics, fit , function etc.
These are the Greatest Military Boot Ever!
I spent six months looking for this exact boot and finally found it hopefully this guide helps anyone else going down this rabbit hole.

This is my favorite boot now, I wear them almost daily. Availability is unpredictable so please feel free to share information you find that will help others find these amazing boots!
Bro, not sure if you're aware but your profile pic aqua color is a gay feminist color. See gay men's flag.
I got an email the other day from KOMMANDOSTORE, they said delivery has been pushed back to December. The good news is they are accepting orders again and have wide and narrow sizing options.
@@KRTLyfe Same. I cancelled my pre-order. Sucks. I need a new pair of meme boots.

The heavyweight Austrian boots you showed are the same ones Robert Pattinson wears in The Batman.
I went through the same search years ago. Found these bad boys and got them resoled with vibram tanker sole. Cobbler admired the leather quality. 10/10 boot
What do you mean “hard to find”? I can find them everywhere - here in Austria 😉 On a more serious note, you are right, they are indeed great equipment! You can walk with them long long distances (which, of course, in the Austrian military, they do…), you can run in them for a few kilometers/miles, you can use them for work as you mentioned (mind that they have no safety features like a steel toe and metal mesh in the sole, they are _no_ safety boots!), and if you shine them properly, well, no too big a problem wearing them to a suit. 7:45 - this mark “Heereseigentum” is important, it means “property of the [Austrian] army”, and you will find this on boots actually issued by/intended for this organisation or the respective surplus. You might not find these on resoled boots, of course. 8:01 - “theoretically, you could have these resoled many many times”? What do you mean “theoretically”??? _This is done,_ and you might even find pieces in some army shops that are decades old. And still do what they are supposed to do. Btw, Steinkogler is (as far as I know) the company that actually supplies the Austrian military. 16:22 - super heavy??? I can only laugh at this. Ever worn a “schweren Feldschuh” (“heavy field shoe”)? 😉 But yeah, even the “Feldschuh leicht” is absolutely not flimsy, mind these are made for war, they _have to be_ heavy duty. Also, the socks typically worn with these are called “Bundesheersocken”, wear these in combination with those boots (as it is done in the Austrian military), and you will not have problems with sweaty feet or something if you change socks once every 24 hours. I do not think “original Bundesheersocken” are shipped abroad. The lacing can be something you have to figure out, but once you do and you have the perfect way to lace your boots, they quickly become like a second skin. On a side note: 11:46 - aaaw!, how cute 😃
Thank you for your detailed response, I am guessing you spent a lot of time marching and training in these boots. I actually wore mine with a suite and really liked the way it looked! These are still the best and most versatile pair of boots I’ve ever owned! Would love to get my hands on the socks to match!
@@KRTLyfe - I'll put this on my reminder-list and might contact you in a few weeks. Because those socks are in a league of their own, a perfect combination of wool (from sheep) with synthetic fibers, machine-washable, and the toe-parts are sown by hand to make them basically seamless there. I'll contact you in a few weeks.

Bei uns im ÖBH sind diese Schuhe mittlerweile selten zu sehen. Mittlerweile muss man diese komischen Plastikschuhe ausfassen. Die sind zwar ganz ok weil sie bequem sind, jedoch nicht so robust.
Ahhh I have Innsbruck
Schweren (with the square toe and metal ski clips) and these liecht are slippers 😂
I just got my pair in the mail today; this review made me pull the trigger on grabbing them. Thanks, great stuff man!
Glad you enjoyed the review and hope you love your boots!
@@KRTLyfeI opened the box and noticed I actually ordered the COMBAT boots in lieu of the lightweight boots. After breaking em in over the last few weeks though, they're by far the sturdiest and most comfortable boots I've ever owned. I was initially worried they'd be too hot (been a pretty brutal summer here in Chicago) but my feet sweat less in these than they did in my Docs, even when blousing them/tucking my pants into them.
I'm keeping an eye out for the lightweight ones to polish and wear as dress boots, though.
I love the leather insoles in them. This is the halmark of a quality boot. The boot bed is also leather ❤
Another great boot to check out is the M77 Norwegian boot. It’s a lot easier to find too.
Just make sure you buy the OG Norvegian Alfa made ones and not the Estonian made saapvarbrik ones. Originally desighned for Finnish military trials, now used by Norvegian and Estonian military. ive had both, the estonian made ones are ok, but the Estonian rubber cracks in -20 to - 30 celsius. Ive had both for years.
Kommando Store generally is reliable in getting hard to find boots like that. They’ve had other boots that are hard to find remade by the original manufacturers in the past.
HOWEVER, their lead times aren’t always accurate. Sometimes off by months.
Thank you for the information. When I finally get them in hand I plan to do a comparison video to the ones I have. Probably won’t be until the summer…
9:05 that's called the instep. You can get a cheap instep stretcher, which will work great on leather boots.
Im just breaking in a pair of Jim Green AR8's. They are a great all around boot that next spring will be hitting the Rockies with me.
I have a pair of these I wear every day. They needed new sole and laces and a lot of Polish when they got to me but I've had them quite a while now and they're best pair of boots I've ever had hands down!
This is basically my boot journey in video form
Great video, man! I've had a pair of the surplus boots going on 5 years now, and yeas they definitely can be resoled. Had a vibram sole put on for about 60 bucks, and they're still a perfectly functional, comfy, and sturdy piece of footwear. And I jumped on the Kommandostore preorder the moment I saw that they were going to get new production boots. Sucks a bit to have to wait to later in the year, but it will be worth it to have a brand new pair without the hassle of going through European markets. Glad you're loving them!
Thank you, I absolutely love these boots! When my DM finally die I wont be so sad because I found these amazing boots. I am considering getting a pair of jungle boots for the hottest days but I really don’t need to.
@KRTLyfe right on man! I will say if you do end up getting jungle boots, keep two things in mind. First avoid the super cheap 30-50 dollar repro boots (Rothco, Fox Outdoors, etc.) They are pretty notorious for low quality and falling apart. Altama and McRae, make good repros for under 200 that are US made. Original surplus boots are great too if they're in good shape. The next big thing is they run kinda big, at least in length. You may have to go down a half size or a full size compared to the Austrian boots for a similar fit.
Thanks for the thorough review, i've ordered a pair just today after waiting for a couple of months for them to come back in stock
Awesome, I cant wait to get them!!!!!!!
I have the heavyweight version of this boot made by Steinkogler. It's probably the toughest, heaviest boot I'll ever own at 1.2kg per boot. It's not as sleek and fashionable as the lightweight version, and it's slower to move around in it, but they are my favorite pair of boots
I thought about getting a pair of them as well but, it never gets cold enough in my region of the world for me to ever use them. I would love to get my hands on a pair of Steinkogler boots tho! Hopefully I will make my way to Austria one of these days and remember to find a pair!
@KRT LYFE The heavy ones aren't that much warmer. They are just much tougher. If you get a fresh pair, they'll break you before you break them in.
@@KRTLyfe - Don't do it! If you buy them new, you will have to basically soak the leather in special fat for a few days to make them not feel like a concrete pipe on your feet, the soles bend so little that walking in them on hard surfaces is uncomfortable (which is no surprise, since they are designed to traverse most difficult natural terrain and _not_ for walking on paved streets), those things are also heavy, _well_ over a kilo of weight each (1.2, to be exact, 2 pounds 10 ounces) - without fat in the leather and dirt stuck to the soles, that is, _with_ all of this those can get quite a bit worse in that regard,… Don't do it. Just don't do it. Heavy Austrian field boots are very specific tools for a very specific job, and in fact, I have to wear orthopedic inlays for the rest of my life because wearing them for too many years when I was younger ruined my feet. The “Feldschuh schwer” is not intended for a daily walker, and should not be used as such. If you do not need boots for the very specific purpose they were made for, then just stay clear of them. Or would you use a 50 ton excavator for your daily commute?
@mediocreman6323 they're not THAT bad......I have the "clod hoppers" made by Innsbruck and as long as you know your size (width is just as important as length) these are incredibly comfortable and definitely more comfortable than most PNW work boots😂
@@richardcostello360 Agreed, all of the negatives he listed can be applied to Nicks boots and other pnw boots. I never owned one of those, but it's probably comparable to this from the looks of them. The only downside of wearing these boots is the weight, so it's more tiring to walk longer distances and climb stairs. And jumping and running are out of the question with these
bro i went throught the exact same journey and ended with the austrian feldschuh. I also bought desinger boots for 1k+ from Ann Demeulmeester and bought leathershoes and brought them to a shoemaker to let them modify them with a thicker sole and such.... it was exhausting and i did spent/waisted so much money. also i have very wide feed and dr martens for example are way too narrow (besides that its a shitty shoe and everyone wears them in europe) - and then after years i randomly was passing a guy and he was rocking them and I bought them from an austrian military shop and did let them widen a little bit and they are the best shoes ever now! - its so funny that you just cannot find anything in the internet about similar shoes like that. it felt i was the only one who wanted shoes with this look, also most of the similar looking shoes have this "duck like" toes where the toe area goes up and the sole is not flat... really happy for you, all the best!
I bought these boots for 40 euros in Austria when i was studying there! Very good boots considering the price! Quite stinky and stale but after a little TLC they work well!
Kept my feet dry on the edge of a hurricane, water resistance is on point. Comfortable too.
The reason why steinadler boot wasn't like the original boot is that you bought expensive version with the membrane, just in my opinion haven't bought them yet :D
Yeah idk, based on the product photos they seem identical minus the lining.
@@KRTLyfenot got a pair - but looking at pics the tounge looks different on the unlined steinadlers
Super cool pick up
Thank you, I love these boots and wear them as much as possible!
Please more videos about the boots.😀
I just went to the same website you suggested and looked at the exact same boots. They do have my size, I just can't spend £52 + £70 on shipping.
this is the boots that robert pattinson wore in the batman
IDK, I’ve never seen the movie.
Where did you find the info between the different brands? Really struggling to tell apart steinadler and steinkogler - I think you brought a slightly different pair to their reproduction that has lining and a different tounge
theyre back in stock on a bunch of sites rn if anyones researching im def grabbing a pair!
Indestructible boots made in Austria are Made by Steinkogler - far better than Steinadler and KSWB - had mine for nearly 25 Years
I believe you, wish I could have gotten a pair of the Steinkogker but I haven’t been able to find them and they don’t ship brand new to The USA.
Great video!
the dutch millitary boots you would like, they called bata m400.
Damn they're so fucking beautiful, have been searching for such black military boots for few days and these m400 are just awesome, am thinking about buying them now.
Also what I as a Russian noticed is that m400 look very similar to main Russian army soldier boots(Фарадей мод.211 if you wonder), I wouldnt be suprised if Russian designers actually took these dutch boots as a base.
Those boots look great! Have you tried the bates paratrooper ones yet? Those are pretty good, I also found that 5.11 has some good quality boots and some are fashionable.
I have looked at the Bates and was considering trying them. However these are so good I no longer have the desire or need to try anything else. I still wear these daily since making this Vlog and don’t see my self switching to anything else any time soon .
That’s awesome. What kind of socks do you recommend for these kind of boots? I tried some merino wool ones and they are good but the heel area isn’t padded enough and starts to hurt.
So, I changed my insole on mine as you saw in the video. I highly recommend Darn Tough socks. I’m not sponsored by them or any brands for that matter but If Darn Tough ever wanted to sponsor me it would be hard to say no. Their socks are soooooooo good and come with a lifetime warranty!!!!! I’ve been wearing DT socks exclusively for probably 10 years now. They offer all types of socks with and with out cushion. So yeah I 100 percent recommend Darn Tough, better than Smart Wool and everything else out there.
@@KRTLyfe nice! I use the darn rough ones, but I think I have to get some with more cushion. They are great quality for sure!
BATA M90 M400, dutch army boots
You think these would be ok for wide feet? They don't seem to come in different widths and in my experience Military boots run mighty tight.
I would try to find a wide version if possible.
Every boot has to be walked in, and after a while, the leather will adapt to your foot. And although this has limits, a leather boot will change to fit your foot to an extent. I have friends with … let's say, leg-ends that would make every duck envious, and they could wear those. To be fair, you just might have to try a few pairs, but outside Austria or its military this might not be possible for you.
Austrian army boots come in different widths
That is what the 8 means 😂
8 is standard width......my pair is 9 for wide 😊
I lived in these boots in the 90's but UK shoe repairer chain Timpson's destroyed most of the original Austrian Feldschuh Leicht Milsurp boots in circulation by grinding the leather away down to the stitching that held the soul to the boot when they re-souled them, a practice that should be recognised as a crime against humanity.
Mayte how have these been leather quality & comfort wise, still rock em? Askin cos am toying with getting them for Canadian winters
I love them!
I actually just got a second pair because I love them so much.
If you get them brand new you will have to break them in but my broken in pair is perfect!
@@KRTLyfe awesome I scored a pair but cancelled - as I am unsure if its too tall !! Might go for Addison Boot & install Vibram looking for that Dior Navigate Vibe !!
very cool
Your doc martens got loads of life left bro
How is the sizing on these brodie? Would you say it’s true to size or do you recommend sizing down? I am a tts 10.5 what would you recommend? Thanks g, great vid
I went true to size and it offers me a lot of flexibility with different insoles and sock combos.
Good video
Thank you! glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks! Check out these too!
Quick question: What condition were your boots when purchasing? Were they Used Grade 1? Or do you have any knowledge how worn the soles are on the Grade 1 boots?
I can’t remember but there were definitely used. However, after a little TLC they look great now!
@KRTLyfe Thanks for the response! Wanting to order a pair, just hoping the soles are in good shape. Yours look great! Fit is pretty true to size also?
Check out the French bm65 double buckle boots, absolutely beautiful boots to have, both for the looks and for the practical part of them!!
If you're talking about the pebble grain black ones......they are terrible to wear on the urban street
What's your US shoe size?
Were the original insoles glued in? If so how did you get them out?
Mine were not glued in, they are just leather flaps that sit in there.
No, they are not glued in, they never are. Greetings from Austria.
What is your shoe size in US sneakers?" For reference
In Nike I am a 8.5.
@@KRTLyfe Right on. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply
I have pair from 1989 and I got those from Varusteleka. 947g is NOT very heavy boot. I have many boots that are heavyer. I think you cant even say that Docmartens are boots, they are more like disgusting shit...

Please. Stop. Calling. Them. Paratrooper. Boots.
They are called Feldschuhe Leicht, if you really need an english name, just call them Austrian combat boots or something like that. These boots were issued to all soldiers, not just paratroopers.
I understand that, however the inter webs references them in many ways, right or wrong. I refer to them in a manner that most people would probably search for them by.
Which is why in the title I put “Paratrooper” boot in quotations. Thanks for the suggestion tho
Oh, and most of if not all Austrian websites/ companies that manufacture this boot spell it Feldschuh leicht not “Feldschuhe”.
Full disclosure, I never jumped when I was in the military but, from what I have heard you shouldn’t jump in boots with hooked speed laces because it is seen as a safety hazard with the parachute. So it would be interesting to know if these boots were issued to airborne units at all.
@@KRTLyfe Thanks for the fast and friendly answer.
I did not jump either in the military, just got drafted for the infantry and medically discharged after 2 weeks of basic training... But our paratroopers do get issued the same boots, they just cover the hooks with tape, although others just wear their privately bought boots.
Good review. These are awesome boots.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
