    The Astronaughts are my fave from Solovair! As you know, I am more of a greasy/matte man haha but these don't look too shiny. Wish they did them in a matte in the 11 eye but I am very tempted to pick these up. Really nice boot mate!

    I find it refreshing to see someone showcasing some Solovairs, and to see that DMs doesn't have a monopoly on that style of leather boots. I've been wearing DM 1460's since I was a teenager, and have noticed that the later pairs I had didn't last as long as my 1st ever pair (which lasted ages with almost-daily wear). Fab boots btw!

    I have had a pair of boots from Solovair for two years now and although I don't wear them everyday, they seem to be holding up fairly well. Initially I was skeptical of the durability of the leather and especially the rubber sole but it doesn't wear out as fast as I thought it would. (Obviously they don't compare to my boots with chromexcel leather and vibram sole) Because I liked it so much, I recently got a second pair. (both MHL x Solovair collabs) I can't wait to wear them this fall!

    I just got mine some days ago, after thinking of buying those FOR YEARS. Totally worth it, no comparison at all in all categories to docs ( and I owned the made in England 1914 some years back). Docs are expensive garbage, which I never bought again. In fact I got a pair of leather Doc Clones from Wrangler. I got them for 20 Bucks in an Outlet and the funny thing is, that even those are more comfy and easy to break in then Docs.

    Personally I often wear a "Balmoral" boot to work because my workplace (a normal corporate office) is frigid. They're made to be worn under trouser legs and to resemble normal Oxford shoes from the ankle down. Only when I sit down (and trousers ride up) would the boot part of the boots be visible. I think this best suits my purposes as I don't want my footwear to be the first thing people notice about me, but they should be visible if someone is in the know about footwear or is very detail-oriented.

    I love the shape and the look of the astronaut boots, was going to keep them but I noticed two things wrong with them that were deal breakers for me.
    1. That long tongue wouldn’t stay centered for anything! Very annoying.
    2. Water leaks directly into the toe box.
    For those reasons I returned them, but they fit perfectly and Solovair customer service was on point!
    I wear Austrian Feldschuh light boots now and they are amazing, but some days I still go back to my good old 1460s. When I don’t feel like dealing with all the lacing and weight of a taller heavier boot.
    Having both types of boots makes me appreciate the 1460 that much more.

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  11 місяців тому

      Ah yes I’ve heard a few people have the same problem. It doesn’t happen to me thankfully, the tongue stays centred! The leaky toe box sounds annoying though - I haven’t worn mine in the rain yet so will have to see what happens. Yes I agree the 1460s are still great boots and I love them!

    Their sizing for seems to be all over the place and the fit guide on the site is next to useless. Everyone says that they come up large, so I ordered a half size down, but they seem way too small. I just received a pair of the 20 eyelet Derby boots and they're very uncomfortable. The crease across the top of the foot is extremely rigid and digs into my foot. I have narrow feet and the toe box is still too narrow.

    How does the footbed feel to you? I got their tassel loafers a few months ago and they're almost fully broken in but i do find it's quite hard in there there's this pain point on the ball of my foot in the left shoe in particular which just won't go away. I think it's the welt, because of the way it tucks under the footbed, but I still really feel it several months in and by the end of the day I'm begging to get them off. I'm hoping it eventually goes away because they look so sweet, even better than the DM Adrians.

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah the way some of them are put together makes a pinch point, I saw that on Rose Anvils video. To be honest I haven’t noticed any issues, but I think my feet are quite slim. Have you tried any insoles to see if they help?

    • @murrayisarobot
      @murrayisarobot 11 місяців тому

      @@JamesLeung unfortunately most insoles I've tried leave the toe box too cramped and by the end of the day you can still feel the welt coming through. In hindsight, although I did the same as you and size down to an 8 when I'm usually 8.5-9, maybe I should have got an 8.5 to allow room for a thicker insole.

    I actually never buy Dr.Martens again after my first pair of Solovair Boots. Reasons for that are:
    The Pricing.
    During the last 12 Years i had around 6 Pairs of Dr.Martens Boots.
    Over these Years the Price went up from 70€ in early 2012 to now over 200€ for the same boot. There is really NO particular reason why the price should go up that way. Imo that just comes down to the increase of interest/hype (over a yellow stitching lol).
    Okay, Solovairs are actually a bit more expensive, but they were made in england, not like the usual DM you get from China, Taiwan, Indonesia or India f.e. . Especially considering the Quality of the material, Dr.Martens seems to have lower demands nowadays.
    The material.
    Nowadays it doesnt take long for the most pairs - considering you wear these a lot/on a daily basis, to have significant damage done to the boot by just walking it. Especially the side of the boot often cracks and gets holes in it pretty quick up until the point where you end up getting wet feet just by watching a puddle lol. Also they are way more stiff, beven though the leather is thinner than the solovair boots leather. The insole gets damaged pretty quick and you cant even get it repaired from official side. The outer sole of DM's is also less robust than the Solovair ones.
    Objective rewievers and shoemakers also found that the Dr.Martens Quality is definitely lower than the other Brand.
    Breaking In Process.
    Ok this is maybe a more subjective thing, but while the BreakingInProcess on all my DMs was horrible i had little to actually no problems with Solovair. I actually never got any blisters and my feet are feeling way better in these boots from day one.

      @@JamesLeung they are from the 80s unsure of the exact year. They definitely have a slimmer toe much like yours! I really liked them but they are patient leather and have cracked really badly.

    Even if this is basically an ad, don't care. Didn't know about the outlet, now I do. How comfy are they though? Only resoleable in the UK?

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  11 місяців тому +1

      It’s not an ad (I wish it was 🤣). I am finding there’s a bit more of a break in compared to Docs, that might be because the leather is thicker. You can buy replacement soles from them for £15 and take them to a cobbler of your choice I guess!
