I own a BT2 since 2014. It came with me on so many trips, and it’s getting better every year. I love it dearly. Could never sell such a good companion.

I have a Bt2 myself. Got it just to learn on better. I have smaller hands than most guitarist out there. I'm trying to use a capo on it. I keep getting buzzing. Sometimes that is. I'm a beginner guitarist. Does it get better with time? And am I not holding down chords hard enough? What do you think? I have a yamaha ac1m. And I feel like the capo works better on there. Just wanted to know if you could give me your opinion.

jesuisravi maybe the carbon fiber guitars are the most expensive but the others are not. I think that the Traveler Guitar Mark III escape acoustic electric should most definitely absolutely have been on the list

And by expensive, you mean better. In reality, the GS Mini (particularly the Koa version) is the best of the bunch.

I've owned multiple Baby Taylors, multiple GS-Mini's, Zager 4/5 Parlor, Journey Instruments Roadtrip RT310, Martin LXM, Martin Dreadnought Jr, and a couple others. As for playability I love the GS-mini and Dread Jr, they are awesome guitars for the price, but for travel where size matters and sound is less important I always grab my Baby Taylor. I never cared for the Little Martin. Sound wise, I love the Dread Jr followed by the GS-Mini. I cant say the Dread Jr or GS-mini are better than the other because they are really much different and both provide me what I want when their differences matter.

Hi Shane, what do you think about the Zager? Is it actually easier to play like they claim? I am new at guitar and was thinking about getting the GS mini but am also curious about Zager due to the ease of play they rave about.

i just bought a Taylor 210. While shopping I was checking out a smaller guitar. I looked and the Martin Little X (or whetever they're called, the Ed Sheeran signature model) and a year old (2016) GS Mini. I couldn't find a Martin Dreadnaught Jr to try... anyway, the GS Mini absolutely blew the others away to MY humble ears. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Even though I bought the Taylor 210, I wanted to add a martin to my stable and thought the travel guitars would do, but after hearing the GS mini, no way. It's gorgeous.

    • @parkjammer

I agree. The GS Mini rocks. Totally blows away the Baby Taylor or the Big Baby (both of which suck hard).

I love my exquisite Composite Acoustics Cargo guitar. Two of its features nobody mentions are its extremely light weight and neck action that reminds me of a top-of-the-line Fender electric. It sounds like a much bigger guitar acoustically, and it's great with an amplifier too.
BUT I often lodge in hotels, and I enjoy cruising. To avoid making intrusive music for the people next door when I practice, I pack a compact, solid-body guitar equipped with a battery powered plug-in for ear buds. Though I prefer acoustic performances, experience has taught me the importance of being a quiet guest and a good neighbor. 😊

I ended up with the Seagull Maritime SWS Folk for traveling with. It comes with an amazingly durable case, fits in overhead bins, and plays much better than the Martin or Taylor in my opinion. I actually had purchased the GS Mini, but the neck is very narrow and I didn't like how cramped it felt playing for extended periods. The Seagull, on the other hand, has a wide neck, sounds amazing, is solid wood, has amazing electronics, and plays just beautifully.

GS Mini is the crown achievement of Taylor guitars. I say that because it's a product that represents a composite of great engineering/design that benefits from Taylor's assembly line automation innovations to deliver a unique product at an exceptional price point. You may think "no way does a GS Mini represent the spirit of the Taylor brand better than their iconic 800 series" but it really does.

Interesting. I recently bought a Baby Taylor built in 1999 (The NT neck was introduced in January 1999). My guitar has clearly had a hard life and been 'played in' for the last 24 years, but with just a thin shim under the neck, the action is perfect but - most interestingly - the tone is amazing. Nowhere near as 'zingy' as the new instrument demo'd by Tony. It is deep, rounded and suits my needs perfectly.

I bought a Yamaha fs800 installed Martin silk and steel strings and brass bridge pins. It's not my best sounding guitar but it travels and at $200 I'm not that attached to it. But what travels best is my home made cigar box guitars. I built one on about 24 hours they cost 20 to 80 bucks and damn are that fun. Only 4 strings but gets alot of attention.

If you want a travel guitar it has to be carbon fibre, the temperature changes rule out wooden guitars, and the best carbon fibre guitars by far, are Emerald guitars, ( not cheap, but you get what you pay for) they do a travel guitar Emerald X7 which is a real beauty and looks and plays better than any of the other carbon fibre guitars.

  • @parkjammer

Utterly and entirely agree... the Taylor GS Mini is absolutely fantastic. My favorite guitar (and I have many).
The Baby Taylor and the Big Baby Taylor both suck incredibly hard (as do the Martin backpacker, the Ibanez DayTripper, and many more).
I put a "B-band" pickup in mine. It comes with a great case (tough, handy, road-worthy). I've played living room jams, backyard jams, and bar gigs with just the GS Mini.
Can not recommend it highly enough.

Takamine Mini (made in China / Korea, reasonable, consistent standard), is the same size as makes no difference to the Taylor GS mini (made in Mexico) in both body and length.
The Taylor case is simply the best hard padded soft case, if not buying a Mono case. For the record I agree with you about the Taylor GS Mini. Note, I love, really adore, the GS mini like you.
BUT the Takamine Mini is very close for less money, I would buy both the GS and the Taka, in fact and the Martin Dread Jr too, for its sound, after a Fender Mexican Baja Tele but that's another story.
But come on please, you are not presenting a full picture when deliberately 'blanking,' ignoring the merits of the Takamine mini, which is a brilliant economic offering. Best under saddle electrics to boot.

The title should be clear in that this list is for acoustic only. If it was for any travel guitar, the best bang for the buck is the LX1e IMO. Plugged in, it sounds tremendous. The GS Mini is HUGE compared to the little martin or the baby taylor. Especially in the thickness of the body. That is not really a travel guitar. The GS mini is more Grand Concert type.

  • @becksutt
    @becksutt 8 років тому +3

Unfortunately, little guitars often come with little necks. It would be useful during your reviews if you noted the nut width. Going one step further, noting the string saving at the saddle is also important. For finger stylists or those with big hands, this is important info. I actually find that wide string spacing at the saddle makes a bigger difference than an extra 1/32" at the nut.

No such thing as tone wood. It's how it's built. CARBON FIBER is AMAZING...ZERO WOOD!

Groovy Music Lessons it doesn't really matter for an electric guitar, but for acoustic it makes a difference. The top is the most important.

This is just my opinion and my experience regarding the Taylor and Martin only.
Yes, Taylor GS mini is the best sounding, best playing, and also the most expensive. For example the spruce top with electronics. $650. Being that it is the 7/8" size this helps against the Martin LX1E which is a 3/4 size guitar at $400-$430. The 3/4" Taylor is trash, and the two screws showing on the front neck is simply unattractive. The Martin LX1E sounds amazing, but mine came with the action way to high, and the strings are extremely heavy gauge to help get the beautiful Martin tone.
Since I was not into paying for a set up, or playing around with a guitar that needed much set up work, like sanding down the bridge etc etc, and that it is presented with heavy strings, it simply was not for me. With a proper set up, it might be a keeper
I'm thinking a cheaper Yamaha or the Mitchell for the take on the road deal, or to simply have a guitar around while laying around. Catch a moment in time.

One of the better Amazon reviews compared the Martin and GS Mini. Those would be my top 2 of this list. While the GS mini looks better at first glance, particularly with price. A lot of build, playability, and sound qualities of the Martin seem to make it a better choice.
    Good review Tony, thanks.

I had a Martin Jr. Beautiful guitar but weather change’s really affected it. If it was out of my guitar room that had a humidifier for a few days. The neck changed. Great cough guitar but no way a travel guitar.
