The Gs mini and the junior sound the best in my opinion nice balanced sound
I bought the GS mini Koa a while back and is beautiful to play, it is now nicely played in and the wood has mellowed very well.
Totally agree
And the last one
Correct... i bought the gsmini hog yesterday and Djr in 2015
Totally agree. Recently bought the Martin DJR street master and I love it!
Outstanding demo! You set the standard by which all all accouatic guitar comparison demos should be done! Thank you!
Loved the Cole Clark "Little Lady 2". Sounded best to me overall. Beautiful instrument, too.
I think Little Lady sounds a bit nasal, because of the obvious design flaw; two bouts of the guitar are almost the same size and same surface area. It adds volume to the guitar, but the soundboard can't separate mids and bass notes well enough, but blends them together.
Played all of the guitars and I ended up with the gs mini. Don’t regret it. Best feel and sound. Also the loudes travel guitar out there
good choice
Did you try the Alvarez LJ2? I haven't gotten to try it yet, but they are transferring one to my local guitar shop from their other store. Which GS Mini did you buy? They had the Spruce/Rosewood and regular Mahogany versions at this same guitar store in town.
Thanks for any info/advice! :)
I liked the warmth of the Martin Dreadnaught Junior. It is made by the renowned Martin, is made of solid wood with a 1.75 inch nut width, which gives more room for anyone other than someone with small hands or a young child. For the price it is an unbelievable value.
That Cole Clark sounds epic! I’m not a Martin type of guy but I was surprised with the Martin jr, but I think the Taylor for the price is my favorite option
23” long the Taylor.
And the Cole Clark
24” for the Martin
24 3/4” for KLOS
24 1/2” for journey
Martin DJr all day - Sounds like a full size Martin what a beauty
I would love to just listen to you play. No tutorials, just covers. You're so good... Although you're also a great teacher and your tutorials are really good.
Thank you and keep up the good work. :)
Gs mini .Thanks for the demo, appreciated much .
The cole was definitely the best all around, especially on the finger picking part!!!!
Your videos are excellent. Well done. For me a travel guitar has to:
1. Have a removable or foldable neck,
2. Be very light, and
3. Be entirely carbon fiber.
The only guitar I know of that matches all that is the Klos full carbon version. But the carbon fiber Journey Of-660 sounds better, and the neck is a better size and comes off way more easily, but it needs to lose a bit of weight.
GS mini and D.JR sounds so good!
For those of us who actually travel... road trips, backpacking, climbing trips, boating... the klos is the only real option on this list. I wish some other companies would catch on and build things that can take extreme humidity change, hot cars, flights, and the unexpected bump on a crowded subway. I've ruined too many wood ones.
See the Lava Me guitars
The Furch Little Jane is literally THE travel guitar
That Cole Clark was obviously by far the best sounding guitar out of the bunch. But for that money you could get a full size guitar. Which brings me back to the Taylor. Small and cheap enough to qualify as a second or travel guitar with a good sound for most genres.
Toss up between the GS Mini & The Cole Clark IMO
What a wonderful comparison. Thank you!
I have the Taylor GS Mini Koa and I love it! Nut width is only 42.7 mm which is exactly what I was looking for. So the Martin and also the Cole Clark wouldn't work for me with the full size nut width. Although they are beautiful. The Martin sounds awesome, too. And the Cole Clark is super cute :)
However, my Taylor GS Mini Koa is perfect for me for the size, playability, sound. And it is simply a beautiful and unique guitar. None of the Koa versions looks the same.
D Jr for all it matters! Full sound, good action, perfect size. The one I own though, plugged into a nice AC60 Bugera amp. Great match :)
That is a good combo indeed! Merry Xmas ciprian!
@@GuitarZero2Hero Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
In my opinion
Sound:
1) Taylor
2) Martin
3) Cole Clark
4) Journey
5) Klōs
Looks:
1) Taylor
2) Martin
3) Cole Clark
4) Journey
5) Klōs
So basically the same haven’t had any in my hands yet tho
The quality you bring in whatever you post is incredible, and something I want to inculcate in me.
Thanks a lot for this review!
Gotta throw my vote for the Martin, was just getting ready to order a GS Mini but after hearing this I thinks the Martin sounds better. I've been on the verge of buying a GS Mini Mahogany for over a year and always held back because of the nut width and I see the Martin is 1.75", perfect for me.
Yup if you’ve got bigger hands the GS mini will be squishy on the fretboard!
The idea of travel guitar used to be (old old old days) a smaller parlor guitar. But since airlines no longer provide service as much as shovel slop onto the masses, and air travel is nowdays the “main” form of travel, i would say quite firmly, especially with consideration to bag/case size, there is only one travel guitar in thise whole list.
you have a fair point there!
I have Taylor GS-Mini & a Taylor 214ce DLX edition and in my opinion the gs-mini sounds better than the standard sized 214ce
Agree 🤣😂
Also make a video on Electric guitars and what to look for before buying .
And what to do if the distance between fret board and strings of acoustic guitar is more ? It becomes very difficult to play at higher frets.
This is how the great review should look like. Many thanks!
Love the Journey for the backpack portability after removing the neck. I wish more high-level manufacturers would implemented something similar to their guitars. Maybe even for a full-sized guitar. Furch has Little Jane that's similar but more expensive. Any others?
The GS mini sounds natural
I love my GS Mini but I I personally wouldn't take it traveling. That gig bag is surprisingly bulky and is a hassle taking on a plane or a car. Get a Baby Taylor or a Martin LX1. A lot easier to carry around and can fit in the overhead compartments.
Martin is still number one, however you can't go wrong the Taylor or the Cole sound wise. To my ears the Journey sounded a bit tinny and the Klos was just plain awful.
I like the fact that you demonstrated each guitar with different styles of playing this give a buyer a better idea of what each one can do and can not do.
My father had Martin it sounded awful and was too fragile
@@petergarland7995 Did you check to see if it was a real Martin? I would suggest you take it to a Martin dealer and have them check it out. I can understand that a Martin may not (personal taste) sound as good as another brand, but that it sounds awful is hard to believe. And what do you mean by fragile?
LafayetteLeSaint yes it was real bought from Andertons in Guildford ,it was terminally damaged by other hand luggage in an overhead locker in its padded case
@@petergarland7995 Sorry to hear that. The awful you hear I think came from it being damaged. I hope you can get a new one. Good luck.
Of the 5 mini travel guitars liked the Taylor mini best.
I own a Klos travel guitar and it sounds pretty good, a little weaker in bass (due to smaller body) more trebles and mids.. surprisingly loud for its size.. it sounds unique but not in a bad way.. sounds better in person than in the recording.
The Cole Little Lady sounds beautiful and has best tones overall.
Hey Alaric!
I agree the Klos definitely has its own unique sound and is a whole lot of fun to play. People shouldn't expect it to sound like a wooden guitar because it just never will being made of carbon fibre! So have to agree with you there! :)
GuitarZero2Hero, hello Dave, I was wondering why the recording for this video for Klos carbon fibre travel guitar sounds different from your original product review.. different mic? I upgraded my Klos with Bigrock Engineering Power Pin 2.0 and Gotoh Magnum locking tuners (black, the heavier tuners cause some neck dive) but once I put the TWA on the back it balances the whole guitar.. since carbon fibre is durable and has good resonance, I get good sound from the TWA effects. Btw, would upgrading the plastic saddle and nut to graphtech TUSQ make a big improvement? Thanks.
You should be a TWA artist, you play really well.
Hey Alaric, sorry for the late reply, but yes I believe the mic setup was slightly different in the other video!
Taylor Gs mini, Martin d Junior and Cole Clark little lady& OF 420 sounds good
Wow. You nailed it. Gs mini overall best I think but if I was gigging with it I gotta agree that Cole Clark sounded amazing plugged in.
I have a GS. I think I'll sell it and get the Martin Jr.
why?
At least some of these just seem like grand concert body style, so my grand concert guitar is already considered a type of travel guitar?
That Klos looks awesome and comes in lefty! Thank you for the recommendations!
Ive always wanted an accoustic Guitar, but they are expensive and i dont have any money, so lately i have been using a cheap guitar from ALDI, my dream is to play an acoustic guitar as well as you can
All it takes is practice, I believe you can!
I travel with my Baby Taylor 2 (Mahogany). Best size for travel.
They’re a good size I agree!
Martin Junior by far the best sounding overall.
Wow, tuff decision- I’ll take one of each........😉🤘
Best comparison video of small guitars! Love my GS mini, but use a baby Taylor strapped to my pack with bunggies for backpacking in the Sierras. Lighter and better than most tiny travel guitars such as the Martin travel. Can you tell me the 1st song in this demo. Love it, and would like to learn the rest.
First song is my friends by red hot chili peppers :)
Your work is a triumph; much like a book that was a triumph in its genre. "A Life Unplugged: Reclaiming Reality in a Digital Age" by Theodore Blaze
KLOS guitar ♥🔥 My ears are awaken by its sound. Different people different taste in my opinion.
D JR. for me is the best, solid and large sound
I'm a Martin fan, I have a D28, but I thought the Martin here didn't have the bass tones that I'm used to. I thought the Cole was the best sounding overall, but the fret width is a bit wide for me and the price for a travel guitar is a bit of a deal killer. Overall, the best value for me in sound, aesthetics, price and size is the Taylor. Plus, I love ebony fingerboards. I am in the market for a travel guitar, so this video was very helpful. Thanks for putting it together.
You’re welcome! Certainly can’t go wrong with Taylor :)
Australia makes excellent guitars. Maton mini is also a good travel guitar.
Agreed Maton are a great brand too
KLOS sounds ghastly - thin and reedy. GS MIni very rich, Martin very close 2nd. I've had both and opted for a Walnut GS.
Dave, now that Journey has come out with a carbon fiber version of the guitar you highlighted above I'm curious to know how you would compare those two. In fact, I'm curious to see a side by side comparison of ALL of the various carbon fiber travel guitars that have a normal guitar body shape, namely the Klos, the Journey AND Lava Me 2 (that I'm aware of). I haven't seen that anywhere here on UA-cam...
I looking to purchase a carbon fiber travel guitar because I'm a huge traveler & nature lover (camping/backpacking/river rafting, ocean beaches, and air travel literally all over the world in climates ranging from - desert to rain forest and hot to alpine cold), and given the variety of places I want to be able to take this guitar and the hugely variable climates and temperatures, carbon fiber will be far more durable and maintenance free. In addition I'm a woman with small enough hands that a smaller nut is fine by me.
I would dearly love to see a comparison of the various dreadnought carbon fiber travel guitars if you have the time. Many thanks for your amazing videos!
The Taylor GS mini wins hand down imo. Followed closely by the Cole clark little lady.
Unplugged:
Nr.1 Martin&co(very good balance between low and high strings sound and very clear sound!)
Nr.2 Taylor(but sometimes i miss the body of deeper strings)
Nr.3,(the last one)
Plugged in:
Taylor has more deeper sounds when plugged in , whit h is good, and Martin&co has the same quality as unplugged.(nothing changes so much like in comparison to Taylor).
Martin
If y'all wonder about what songs he's playing, it's these:
6:18 - 7:41 Red Hot Chilli Peppers - My Friends
7:43 - 9:07 John Mayer - Daughters
9:08 - 10:54 Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
thanks, that helps!
Why do people say the GS mini is not suited to people with big hands when most other Taylor guitars have the same nut width?
No mention of the Martin LXM, Martin Backpacker, Taylor BT 1&2, Takamine GX11ME-NS or any Takaminis?!
Definitely the Little Lady 2 for finger picking (and also for the guitar's design)! But I think the OF420 has an interesting concept: it has a fair sound and it is clearly very easy to transport. I can't get used to the Klos' metallic sound!
Thanks for this nice video :-)
Thanks for watching! Agree with you :) despite the thinner sound the klos is heaps of fun to play though so there’s always pros and cons haha
Was not expecting that sound from the Cole Clark. Definitely a toss up between the GS Mini and the CC but I'm definitely leaning towards the GS mini for my next purchase.
Cole Clark Little Lady !
Don’t miss the SX Trav1, it and it’s padded gig bag are superior in many ways!
1. Martin
2. Taylor
3. CC
4.Klos
5. Journey
Taylor and Martin sounds great.
Mini GS and the Martin is close or the same. Prefer the Koa on the GS. Best tones on these two.
Take the Cole Clark pickup/mic and put it in the D jr and we have an absolute #1
Couldn’t stand listening to the carbon fiber. GS mini is tops bro.
Jr., GS Mini, Lady... I didn’t care for the sound of the Journey or Klos guitars.
Cole was the best sounding but dang pricey Taylor and the Martin for affordable imo thanx for the review 👍✌
Taylor GS mini and Martin Jr.
I kind of like the gs mini but after hearing the cloe clark i fell in lobe with it
You really do have your act together, thanks
Thanks Ron
Thankyou bro. You show me the good guitar
Taylor then Martin as a close 2nd. The rest aren't even close imho
good work Dave
my ovation celebrity cs212 is a great travel guitar! it is acoustic/electric With preamp. it sounds great and it's tough as hell!!
they look beautiful too!
excellent, systematic review. Very helpful, thank you!
excellent comparison video. this is how it's done.
thanks mate :)
I think Little Lady sounds a bit nasal, because of the obvious design flaw; two bouts of the guitar are almost the same size and same surface area. It adds volume to the guitar, but the soundboard can't separate mids and bass notes well enough; all parts of the soundboard vibrate the same, therefore mids and lows are blended together.
for me just martin, sound very good in my ear. and the second maybe taylor. 3 other im not!
I think so for the unplugged sound, Martin is number1
My opinion the Martin sounded the best.
I have a Little lady.... great guitar, great sound... but maybe twice the price of most of these?? Not sure. They are not cheap. But are solid wood, are well made and look great (such a minor detail!!!)
The lid on Pandora's box is lifting.............I have a Dreadnought junior which I leave in the car, rarely out of tune and plays well. I have tried the Little Lady and did consider it as I have small hands anyway, it also has a fairly unique feel and sound to my ear. For air travel I use the folding Air-Voyager which has a cabin bag dimensions, 25'' scale and reminds me of the Martin Dreadnought Junior sound. I also use the Yamaha Silent guitar, some airline accept this as hand baggage also. It has another advantage in that through headphones with the onboard effects you get great performance without irritating people in the hotel room next door. These are of course all acoustics but have seen some good electrics coming out but not tried them out. I can imagine playing through something like a Blackstar mini and headphones gives a true electric feel
Hey Andrew! Haha certainly is Pandora’s box! Wish I could have reviewed more in this list :) I really dig the Yamaha silent guitars, very unique look about them! Quite a nice collection you have there! Happy new year, Dave
For me the best travel guitar is ibanez ewp 14Opn picolo 👌
Taylor gs mini kao wood what is the price is it 🥰🥰🥰 I love it
Im not expert and maybe its just o my liking but to my ears the GS mini sounds the best.
I really like the talor mini but I think most of the time I would find the taylor more pleasant. That Martin tho... The klos sounds awful to me
In my not that cultured oppinion, from worst to best would be Klos > Journey >Martin > Taylor/Cole depending on preference but I guess the cole is a bit better perhaps?
That said, I like the most the Taylor and the Journey, and think the journey for what it offers, if you want that of course, is the best option
Great to hear your thoughts! Yeh they're all really great. I think the Klos is good too but it is definitely more suited to travel playing, it's tone definitely can't match the wooden options. If i'm being honest the Martin is the most fun for me to play out of these :)
Great breakdown
Plugged Martin and unplugged Journey
Taylor is absolutely superior to the other ones in terms of sound.
D JR. Is the best i think
Taylor vs Martin both best , so hard to choose
Hey Dave! You're videos are awesome mate! 👌Been here for a long time now! Also could you PLEASE do a video on The Other Side from The Greatest Showman? It'll be a huge help! Thanks a lot!
Taylor GS Mini has by far the best sound in all categories :)
Great video, thank you so much. I like the full sound of the CC, but the price tag is steep. Next, Taylor, then Martin. Didn’t like the Klos until you plugged it in w fingerpicking. Journey sounded too tinny. I have a baby taylor now for travel, but doesn’t quite meet my standards. Was hoping to love the Klos cuz I like the durability factor, but I guess you can’t really mimic solid wood...in the end I’d save up for the CC, or buy a good travel bag for my guild m120.
Not sure if GRETSCH JIM DANDY fits in the category, but it was an awesome below $200 travel guitar!
i'll have to check it out!
Unplugged
Martin
Taylor
Clark
Journey
Klōs
Plugged
Clark
Taylor
Martin
Klōs
Journey
In my humble opinion 🙂
I thought the GS mini sounded the best all round although the Little `Lady sounded best picked and finger style, she sounded too bright strummed but that could be the tone wood. I have a redwood version that doesn't sound that bright.
The Martin sounded muffled. The other two - meh!
Great job, thank you!
Good one mate
The Cole Clark wins hands down for looks! And in my opinion also sounds the best.
Thank you so much! I already have 2 gutairs one nylon stringed and one steel stringed for rotation when my finger's burn but i wanted to get a travel gutair and you couldn't have made this video at any better time.
-keep up the great work👍
Cheers Daniel! Let me know how you go!! :)
I kinda liked the GS Mini myself. But I am a little prejudiced since I have the mahagony version that has a deep rich sound. and I have an after market skb case with ata approved locks. travel case and I just check it in the airplane bagage . Just got back from key west with it. I have ab'd it against the koa and i like the deeper richer sound of the mahagony.
Brilliant video - many thanks
cheers Ian!
