Underline the key topic points that need to be included in the report ( usually 3-4 point in the head of the question ) who is going to read our report? To decide the correct style . We normally have the choice between formal, neutral and informal language, and depending on the person that the report is directed towards, we choose, e.g to the manager , we choose formal words. How to structure our report (all reports are the same ) 1 Title : simple title 2 introduction: clearly state the purpose of the report. And prepare the reader for what to come in the following paragraphs. 3 topic paragraphs: we address the key topic points that we found in our task analysis ( the main , longest parts of the report) give each paragraph a subheading, and start each paragraph with what to expect in this exact paragraph. 4 conclusion / recommendation: use a subheading as well. We suggest a specific course of action and summarize the information from the topic paragraphs. ( we use persuasive language to help change the opinion of the reader’s opinion in our favor)

Good afternoon from Spain, teacher! I have a question regarding to whom our reports are written: is there any particular difference in the degree of formal register that I need to consider when writing to a superior or a peer group? If so, how should I put it in words? Thanks in advance and congratulations on your channel!
Hi Francisco, thank you for your comment. There is generally no difference in register when you write a report for a superior or a peer group as the peer group never consists of your friends or anyone you are close to. You might want to avoid contractions (don't, I'm, etc.) completely when writing to the director of your school and include them when the readers are your colleagues, but it doesn't really make a difference. If in doubt, keep it formal in a report.
Hey, I have an urgent question. There are some reports where they don't ask for suggestions, instead they ask you to say how helpful your training/etc. has been for your future career/etc. In this case do we still have to write suggestions? Or do I just have to write a conclusion? Or both?
Hi there, I have a doubt with a report task I found and I need some help. So, the task asks me to write about an exchange programme I took part in and it says "Your report should include where you went and who you stayed with and what you did during your visit. It should also include a comparison between your visit and the person's previous stay with you, as well as any points you wish to make in general". Which would be the topic points?

My CAE exam is on Saturday and this video has been very helpful. I do have one question. Can I choose a random job? Or do I have to leave it at: ‘ I developed this skill due to MY JOB’?
Hi Phill, First of all, I want to thank you for all your videos that are helping me preparing my C1 exam (That I will have on the 17th June). However, I find it difficult to differenciate between a report and a proposal because they have a lot of similarities and, although I really like proposals, in some occasions I might confuse them with a report. Could you give me some advice, please? Thanks in advance. Felix
Thank you for your question, Felix. Reports and proposals are indeed very similar. The biggest difference is that a report is about something that has already happened and a proposal is about ideas for the future. Therefore, you have to adjust your grammar, but in terms of layout and style, the two are very much alike.
An important question indeed and yes, you need a subheading before each section. This is an essential feature of a report. However, a section can be one or more paragraphs. That depends on you and how you want to structure the report.
No, you don't. It's up to you if you want to make a list, but that's probably not the best choice for every task. Make that decision when you make your plan and don't leave it until after you've started writing your text.
Phill I got a question: Whats the difference between a report and a proposal, for me, the structure is practically the same except for the formal/informal style.
Hi Sergio, you are right. Proposals and reports are very similar. The main difference is that a report always talks about something that has already happened (e.g. a survey you've conducted or an event you've attended, etc.) while a proposal is about something in the future (e.g. the future use of an area in your town, the future allocation of funds, etc.). You might have to adapt your language to the specific topic, but structurally they are pretty much the same.
Hi Andrei, I am working on an ebook about all the different writing tasks in C1 Advanced and there you will be able to find tons of linking expressions and other useful language.
I agree with both of you and I also would like to point out that punctuation is also paramount when writing in a formal register. There is lack of commas throughout the text, even if the the explanation is on point and thorough.

Hi phil
I do only have one doubt with the report structure, is it necessary to include a conclusion?
In a report, you don't need to summarise your text as you would in an essay, but your "conclusion" should include the recommendation you want to make.
Can you write a report in 1st person or does it have to be in 3rd
You want to try and keep a report as impersonal as possible. However, it is your report so you can throw in your suggestion as well.
The explanations are nice and clear, but it is strange to see spelling mistakes here like "evaluation" is written as "eveluation".
Thanks for pointing it out. Even the best of us seem to make mistakes from time to time. Luckily, it doesn't change the main ideas of the video. :)
