How do you rip your DVD's ?
I started off with DVD Shrink to copy DVDs to a single-layer DVD (much cheaper but the lower capacity meant it had to drop the quality a bit). As hard drives became cheaper I started using DVD Decrypter to rip the files from the disc, then Handbrake to encode them to a single file and save space. Now that I have a Plex server and am looking to take my library of DVDs and Blu Ray discs and store them on hard drives I'm looking to see if there's anything better.
Thanks Scott, I thought I had to buy a DVD ripping software but he free MakeMKV works perfect. Really enjoyed your simple and clear style of presentation.
That’s great, glad it helped.
Thanks, worked great!
Thank you so much for this info. I'd been using handbrake for years and then it just stopped finding the source files - even for DVDs which I had already ripped! This is a blessing!
You’re welcome
Thanks for the video! Just started my Plex server gotta a lot of John Wayne dvd's to rip!
That's Awesome! Enjoy!
IM am converting V the Original mini series now with this and of this works I will super psyched as not even the pirate sites have this bad boy (original dual layerd excellent condition case and all lol), tries 3 different programs but they didnt work so I will be very happy to add this to the NAS collection, thank you sir!
This would be a cool setup for a movie theater setup at home just running ur own movies and shows without worry or buffering or fear it get taken off ur favorite platform
Hi Scott. Watching from England. Your presentation is perfect! Nice and relaxed and no loud background music. I'm new to Plex and so haven't uploaded any DVDs yet. I've got two WD NAS drives but haven't used Plex at all. I've ripped tons of CDs (my own collection) over the years and know only too well the nightmare with tags etc, but streaming, I'm new to it. Thank you for the help.
Any questions let me know
@Scott Burnette I've just ripped a dvd and it put it in C Video folder, but how do you add it to Plex? I've added it to my NAS by copy and paste as I normally do but I don't need to do this with Plex? Cheers Scott.
@@npr1300A8 Which NAS are you using? Synology, QNap , WD ? Let me know and I’ll send you some instructions.
@@ScottBurnette WD EX2, Scott.
@@npr1300A8 Here is the support / install page for the WD NAS: support.plex.tv/articles/115003310834-western-digital-my-cloud-home/
I have one of those pop-up outdoor theaters for my own personal use. I want to do a triple feature and have maybe trailers and intermissions stitched in between the movies. Will the software you use stitch them together so I can make a presentation like this
thanks for the tutorial! does the download have any noticeable decrease in audio/video quality? also, are subtitles available?
I'd love to try this and make a comment about how good and easy this program is to use, but the pigs might come and kill me.
Hi Scott. Really good Video. Thank you for clarifying the MKV program, it really helped. I'm have a problem with Plex going to sleep over night. The only way I have found to wake it up is reinstall the program.
Do you have any suggestions?
What are you running plex on ? NAS , Server, PC ?Let me know.
Whats other FOSS do you use!
Thanks for the information. I'm confused about how Plex works. Does Plex store my media files or do I need a dedicated computer in my house to store everything? Also, do you know if this service will work internationally. I am moving to Japan and want to bring my DVD collection, but in a a digital format. Thanks.
You would need a spare computer, nas , server to house the media. I use a synology NAS to do that. I am not sure about Japan, that's why I would rip my collection to digital and use plex.
Odd question, do you put the episodes into a single folder for whatever show? iE for Plex you have a big bang theory folder, and every episode inside that folder?
Under the tv shows library I have a folder the Big Bang theory. Under that I have folders season 01 - season 12 . In those folders I each episode named IE: the Big Bang theory s02e04. I hope this helps.
Hi just saw your video I have a question so sometimes I’ll run into an issue where mkv can’t read the dvd and it’s not scratched or dirty it just won’t rip it can you Plase help me thanks great video
There are products online & amazon to repair a disk if it’s not too bad. I’ll try to look into that.
Change the minimum chapter length from 120 to 3600 seconds. This will speed up your initial processing time by weeding out the chapters shorter than 1 hour long. Unless you’re ripping tv shows, then change it to 3000 second (50 min).
I know this may be a dumb question but the discs are still playable right? I know with imgburn I can still play the game disc afterwards. Just want to make sure before I wreck a bunch of my movies
Yes they are.
Plex freezes on my smart TV. Why is that. It's a 2023 Samsung. Doesn't happen on my other TV and it's the same. And other apps run fine. I use fire stick and reboot it and re installed and still the same.
What is your process for renaming the files after ripping them?
For movies, I just name them "Name".mp4 or .mkv. For TV Shows I name them the name, if it's a series I create a folder of the name and within that I create a season folder "Season 01" and within that I add the file named "Name" S01E01.mkv
how did it rip with the css protection?
From what I have read makemkv gets around that most of the time. I don't know how yet, I am reading up on it.
Is MKV free?I want to rip DVD down to a USB drive for my vehicle player.
Yes it is
Did our copy of Matilda and it was only audio on the mkv file.
Looking into this now.
Not working with some dvd - first one didn't worked
How do you know which file is which episode?
I'll make a video explaining how I do this.
Can you do that with games too
I Am not sure.
You can using imgburn then you find a matching emulator. For me I use pcsx2 which is a ps2 emulator and ripped all of my games.
Don't forget about forced subs for films like avatar
I try to use that one and it crashes I haven’t got it to work. I use windows
If you can , make sure your Windows install is up to date and if you are using a usb DVD drive , use a different usb port.
I tried this works great time to copy all my favorite movies then toss those messy DVDs
Great!
Good program but I have never got it to work it goes so long and freezing even times wins works even time
Have you checked your optical drive? Could be the drive or drivers.
Well my DVD's don't work so they must be copy write
Does the software throw an error ?
Yes

@@JH-kh9lf what was it ? Maybe we can work around it
Why do you convert your movies to MKV? The industry standard is MP4.
It's a fun waste of time. I say that because at least for me, I was never happy with the quality. I had several hard drive failures over a few years. Those things are not cheap and a power surge can easily take them out. And it got me to thinking, how many times do I really need to watch "Dude Where's My Car" and I cleared out a lot of stuff I haven't watched in a long time and recouped some of that money.
