It is all the more remarkable when you consider that these 'licks' and obligato embellishments were largely spontaneous at this session, I think so at least, Richard was feeling his way and employing what all great guitar players respect: the chord tones, we might transcribe these forensically, however the spirit of this playing is all about using your own emotions, and interpreting the music, to offer something greater than the parts.
I always thought it sounded like he was playing a Les Paul on this track but on listening to your vid I'm wondering if it wasn't a Tele with the tone turned down.
As far as I’m aware, Thompson used a Strat for this album - I believe he gave up his Gold Top for the Fender in 1968. This track was 1969. See here - www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/richard-thompson-the-incomparable-alchemist

I think that's a beautiful riff
Thank you - I've been looking for those licks for years!
Same here 😀 Such tasteful, subtle use of basic positions!
really nice - thanks. I also listen to the Richard's licks behind and over Sandy's gorgeous vocals. Cheers!
Great song. Thanks for posting the lesson.
Stunning, what a great sound and authentic clever instruction.
