    Richard Thompson is one of the most talented musicians to grace folk music. His evolution through Fairport grounded his experience and beyond with his wife flowering into the greatest folk ever produced from England.

    Richard Thompson is one of the world's most under-rated singer-guitarists... if you need further proof after listening to this song, just listen to his verson of the traditional Irish song, 'The Parting Glass', which captures every possible emotion its author could possibly have intended! 'Onya Richard! And long live Fairport Convention! (RIP the beautiful Sandy Denny!) :'(

    ffairport convention has always been one of my favorites. the level of talent of basically all of them. i still listen to them and their offshutes. sandy denny was one of the best. she had a problem with time and aging. they were all really young. swarb was really talented and unfortunately liked his nicotine too much it is sometines hard to watch him decline. his voice was incredible along w the fiddle. simon nicol and swarb did some great tunes. it is good to see how healthy richard is. he is totally versatile and keeps on making great music

    Tuning stuff: This version is in CGDGBE. The Fairport version is in standard, using chord shapes with a lot of ringing open E and B strings (same shapes as on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"). The '67 recording with just Sandy sounds like DADGAD, which would make her a very early adopter of it.

      I know very well how you feel ?I understand, friend. I feel the same way sometimes. But you must not allow yourself to continue on that road. That way of thinking is a dead end road. And then I look around at what I do have in this world and the things that I did accomplish in this world. No matter what you have lost there is always something that you can look into your self and say:”I accomplished many things! “. And then I can actually sit down (and I do ),and enumerate the things I have accomplished. I am a musician. At one point in my life I felt the hand of God picking me up and placing me on the streets of Burlington Vermont as a street singer,as we used to call them.Now it is trendy to call them buskers, which is the old name from Olden times.My advice to you,is to gather up the gifts you have been given,dust them off,polish them to an impressive shine ,and go find your dream,which you left behind all those wasted years ago.Make up your own kind of prayer and have a good long talk with whatever force of nature is responsible for your being here and now,on this still mystery laden ball of elements we call earth.Forgive yourself and make amends to those whom you have hurt..Some need the help of religious institutions.Others do it by going to a place of peace and work it out with the gods of nature(Pantheism). It is up to you and no one can do it for you. Be careful not to isolate yourself.Good luck!

    Ohh gosh Sandy Danny, Richard Thompson, Fairport... 1972 I was 10 and just starting my life and how lucky
    I was to grow up in the 70's when music was at its best.
    Arguably the best decade of music ever, and will ever be.
    The 70's, I wish I could go back and experience it all over again.

    • @Tonetwisters
      @Tonetwisters 5 років тому +4

      Well, we each have our preferences in terms of "greatest decade" for music. I was born in the late '40s and got to hear the big band stuff, then the very start of rock and roll and the doo wop groups, Presley, Beach Boys, Orbison, all the girl groups, The Beatles and British Invasion, ad infinitum; and yes ... the WONDERFUL Sandy Denny with Richard's great guitar work on the original recording of this song, as well as those fabulous bass lines.
      Lots of great music out there, including classical and New Orleans Jazz and bluegrass and Blues. Plenty to enjoy. The best, however, is music that glorifies God, especially Christmas music to the glory of Jesus Christ, Lord of all the universe and Heaven.

    • @taylor-vl1re
      @taylor-vl1re 7 років тому +2

      I haven't tried playing the song yet but the chord voicings are in an open tuning. This looks like open G. You can get the same sounds in open D or E.

    • @honeychurchgipsy6
      @honeychurchgipsy6 7 років тому +2

      taylor8492 - open tunings are really useful for folk music - especially if you finger pick. I play the ukulele and try doing my own versions of trad. folk songs - the uke's tuning is actually Am7 (G C E A). Also, I often find that proper chords just won't work owing to the use of modes (such as Dorian) rather than actual keys, in folk songs. I end up devising my own chords/partial chords - whatever works really.

Something about the way their handlers booked them, or didn't, or maybe they just suited their home population's taste in music better. Both of them becoming better known now. The songs are still great, fresh and relevant, so better late than never. I do wish Nick Drake could have known better when he was living, how he would be appreciated one day.
