I'm 21 and my friends always wonder what the hell I'm listening to, but screw 'em. John Hiatt and Steve Earle are musical monsters, can't wait to see John live again.
We're mixing up drinks with mixed feelings. . .god, I love John Hiatt! This is one of my favorite Hiatt songs. How could you not love "there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are"?
Yes sir, I am 65, and this is my favorite video. Even the videos are excellent. I had head of him years earlier, but damn, when slow turning came out--- I know good stuff👍🍉
My mom's family survived the Great Depression on 40 acres in northeastern Arkansas next to Buffalo slough. Every time I hear this song it takes me there and it's 1933, now that's Americana. Grandpa built the house on the 40 acres himself. All that from a 4 minute, 35 second song, all of his music is like that.
Our man John is a special talent with an amazing ability to paint a picture with words in a way that only a few can. And he adds cool music too. ;) Long live John!
This video was filmed in 1994 and I'm actually in it for a few seconds at 3:24 the girl on the left in the white sweater. I was 24 at the time and I so miss these times!
I'm 26 and feel that most of my peers have abysmal taste in music. Good to see other people around here who agree: John Hiatt, Steve Earle, John Prine...simply three of the best ever.
We play this track as part of our set and the good people of the UK love it. The melody is evocative and the beat is beguiling so even folks who have never heard it, love this track - best wishes, Mike from The Hicksville Band
My God! One of my 5 favourite Hiatt tunes of all time! I never knew this one was released as a single. It's incredible that songs like these don't sell a million/billion times. But it's great to see that at least it is much appreciated by his fans. John is one of the best!
“Now there’s only two things in life but i forget what they are”... What an amazing lyric. The phrasing and musical pronunciation should be studied by next gen songwriters.
Crying my eyes out. He came to Melbourne Australia when my late wife was in the last stages of her battle with cancer and blew a certain blues artist out of the venue. He got a standing ovation and Robert Cray had a huge walkout.
Put this on my walkman 20 yrs ago to listen to on holiday with my kids, they still love the tracks from Perfectly good guitar , to this day ,now that's education
For what it's worth now, this song has been out there all along on the underrated "Perfectly Good Guitar" album. Just one more absolute gem from Hiatt that never got enough notice. Great to find it here.
This guy is a great singer. I can't imagine why he isn't more famous than he is. I had the CD "Perfectly Good Guitar", but my kids tore it up. BAD KIDS!
This song, as well as Cross My Fingers, was my "gateway" to the genius that is John Hiatt! IMO, he is the not only the greatest American songwriter but he is the greatest American lyricist ever. I welcome any others that are in his class. I would love to hear them!
I heard this song Live four (count 'em, *four!* ) times on the Perfectly Good Guitar tour, with Mike Ward on guitar. As much as I love Ry Cooder and Sonny Landreth and David Immergluck and some of the other great folks who have played with John over the years, it was one hell of a band he had here, known as The Guilty Dogs ("I did it!) on that tour. This song was fantastic live, and Mike Ward's slide guitar break and solo on "Thank You Girl" was one of the most insane over-the-top phenomenal slide guitar moments I've ever heard. (I have it on tape, as one of the show's was broadcast on local radio and a friend taped it for me). I took my new girlfriend to the 3rd (and fourth) show I attended on that tour, and I think she fell in love with John Hiatt at the same approximate time she was falling in love with me! She has been a huge fan ever since. She tried to get tickets *today* for the upcoming tour of John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett, but all the good seats at the closest theater were already sold out, except for the seats in the nosebleed section. Our old eyes don't work that well at a distance, and anyway the timing would be problematic for her work schedule , so I guess we won't be able to see him this time around. Bummer!
@ShortiSnappin You have really exceptional taste. Hey, I'm 33 and I was about your age when I got into John Hiatt too. Don't worry. John Hiatt and Stever Earle will still be highly regarded long after Kanye West and Rhianna are gone.
I was given a copy of Hiatt's "Slow Turning" cassette by a boss during a college job. I was probably about 22. I was a metal head but I instantly loved Hiatt. Delbert McClinton, Knopfler and Robert Cray were also some of my faves.
I've seen quite a few performers on stage. John is among the very, very best of them all. There is no better singer and no better songwriter on the planet. Unfortunately I have seen him live only once, as he doesn't come to Germany too often. I'd love to see him again.
So many similarities to manic depression. The song may have nothing in common, but it fits some ways, very close. Thank you John for telling truth better than any shrink.
Year’s of living and driving that road this is a blues tribute song that I always thought was a great song and the best song Compared to highway 61 with Dylan .
Well the last couple people who say that their peers don't get their taste in music... Our parents are cool and they listen to wicked music! We went to see Hiatt as a family when I was like 14. (The Mandy Moore thing is painful)
@ShortiSnappin Good for you! Stand your ground....you are the one who should be laughing at them. This music will stand the test of time, theirs will be forgotten.
Having owned the cassette (ask your parents) since it was released, I can testify that it IS "mixing up drinks, with mixed feelings". The repetition is intentional, when done right (as it is here) it enhances the meaning. When done wrong (as it so often is) it just sounds clunky.
I remember seeing this in fairly heavy rotation on CMT back when it came out. Yes, CMT used to play more than the same 20 songs (not to mention non-musical programming. What's up with that?). Getting bought out by MTV was the WORST thing to ever happen to CMT.
I'm 21 and my friends always wonder what the hell I'm listening to, but screw 'em. John Hiatt and Steve Earle are musical monsters, can't wait to see John live again.
John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett are stone cold magical to see together as well.
Tell them you're listening to music! Give me Hiatt, Earle, Lovett, Bruce Cockburn, Jason Isbell and Rodney Crowell and I am a happy camper
Being 21 doesn't last long, huh?
@@tmac8892 Not long enough! :)
May I suggest the late great John Prine for you also check out rock and roll group Dire Straits Mark Knopfler solo stuff
We're mixing up drinks with mixed feelings. . .god, I love John Hiatt! This is one of my favorite Hiatt songs. How could you not love "there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are"?
Trying to fill this hole in my soul but nothing fits there! What a great songwriter!!!
Just let that pony ride!
The first time I heard this gem it resonated with me on so many levels. "Trying to fill up this hole in my soul, but nothing fits there".
Who's listening in 2023??
2024
Loktown John, Hamburg 😅
Man, i'm 52 years old and just recentlly discovered this guy. I think iI missed alot.
His music is great!
Yes sir, I am 65, and this is my favorite video. Even the videos are excellent. I had head of him years earlier, but damn, when slow turning came out--- I know good stuff👍🍉
One of the few songs in the world & can listen to over & over. Hands down John Hiatt is America's greatest songwriter!
AMEN!!! And Nashville agrees!
I agree

This is such a great song. Haven't heard it in years and it hits hard.

I was listening while reading the comments then I saw yours.
That's cool.

Your taste in music is beyond EXCELLENT!!!
steve earle ?? you lost your mind ??
25, right there with you. So many more. Lyle Lovett is great if you haven’t checked him out.
We play this track as part of our set and the good people of the UK love it. The melody is evocative and the beat is beguiling so even folks who have never heard it, love this track - best wishes, Mike from The Hicksville Band
He is a national treasure. Once he cleaned up and found his footing as an artist, every album has been a gem.
Absolutely one of the greatest songs ever written!
My God! One of my 5 favourite Hiatt tunes of all time! I never knew this one was released as a single. It's incredible that songs like these don't sell a million/billion times. But it's great to see that at least it is much appreciated by his fans. John is one of the best!

Not underrated.
Haven't heard this in years
Crying happy tears now of better times

God, I love visiting Hiatt's videos. No vitriol, just love.
One of my favorite songs of all time. And I've been around awhile.
Meeee Tooooo!
Sixty three and I agree.

Lived in Mississippi for a while and this sound was always on the bonfire playlist.
John Hiatt is such a great musician. He's amazing!

This is one of the best songs ever
just floated the Buffalo river yesterday and we did see some pretty sweet old homes, front porches, horses.
What a great storyteller he is with such a wonderfully unique voice to tell it in!
Rock on, John. Very few people paint a picture with words as well as John Hiatt.
I have ALWAYS loved this song!!!! Thanks for the vid :-)
Saw him live once, great performer.
His album 'perfectly good guitar' could be a Greatest Hits record.
Wonderful.
@ShortiSnappin
You have really exceptional taste. Hey, I'm 33 and I was about your age when I got into John Hiatt too.

Fabulous ..great rhythem and melody..guitar stringing great..great band
cool melody. he's a genius amongst songwriters.
I've seen quite a few performers on stage. John is among the very, very best of them all. There is no better singer and no better songwriter on the planet. Unfortunately I have seen him live only once, as he doesn't come to Germany too often. I'd love to see him again.
Just when you think that you've gypped, the bearded lady comes and does a double back flip......
I thank you great song and video.
Saw the man in Manchester UK, 20ish years ago. Great gig.
My favorite Hiatt song. Love this song......

Blasted out the album this came from earlier
Awesome from the truly marvellous John Hiatt
This is a nice little compact rocker with good lyrics.
Michael Ward's guitar work makes this one of my favorite Hiatt albums.
one can t go wrong with the best song writer EVER
Why does this damn song move me so much!!??
Because it is brilliant!
super! never knew there was a video of this song
great music, nice man, JOHN HIATT!!
This song is SO phillosphical...
One of John's best!
So many similarities to manic depression. The song may have nothing in common, but it fits some ways, very close. Thank you John for telling truth better than any shrink.
mr. hiatt's best songs, and there are several, stand alone
"Now there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are"...Ha Ha!!
"It seems we're either hanging on a moonbeam's coat-tails or wishin' on a star...."
Thanks John...............................
this is some of the best music in current times
Always thought I would like to See John hook up with Neil young and the horse on this one. Guitar and drums very similar and a great song
Reminds me a little of Tom waits. Love it!
WoW! What memories! Shows my age!!!
@ShortiSnappin Hiatt's a recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievment Award in songwriting. Your parents are wise. Quality endures.
Year’s of living and driving that road this is a blues tribute song that I always thought was a great song and the best song
Compared to highway 61 with Dylan .

Video filmed in Coahoma county and Clarksdale, listen closely to the lyrics.Luv you all.
Ever see him in concert?
Pensacola Springfest!
#BassPlayerSusan
No but I am taking my daughter Stephanie Jean up to Santa Rosa Calif. in October for his show with Jerry Douglas. We can't wait.
I looked for this song from the mid 90s. At one point one person told me it must be Bob Dylan. What a joke.
In a subtle and humble manner, he's the antithesis of the Hollyweird. He's a bard for the ages.
that kid must have been crying frome the sheer epicness of John Hiat in person
@ShortiSnappin Kid, you are our hope for the future.
@ShortiSnappin Good for you! Stand your ground....you are the one who should be laughing at them. This music will stand the test of time, theirs will be forgotten.
An Indian blanket on a pony, with no rider in the flesh and bone. I've seen it in this Land of Enchantment.
Buffalo River. Arkansas born and raised.

John Hiatt Rocks. So to speak
mixing up drinks with mixed feelings
One of my favorite lines too. I hope you get to see him live...it further proves what a genius he is.
Hope my neighbors like this song.
BRILLIANT!!!
anyone have or know where i can see tenessee plates?
right here on you tube, just got done listening to it, a little faster than the version that I like tho.
Man, is he good or what?
as mobetta56 sd, i am pretty sure it is mixing up drinks with mixed feelings

You're right. John quit drinking before this song came out. Thus the mixed feelings...tending bar as a teetotaler.
Only two things in life we forget what they ae
@dbciii i am right there with you on that dbcii.
Legend!!!
@orsiorsi186 This video came out in 1993, the child would be much older now.
