Another great John Hiatt song. Melody, memorable lyrics, a smoking band, the whole package.

Saw them in a small venue, Crest Theater, touring after this release.
Michael Hall was so freaking good on guitar, and John Hiatt doesn't do bad shows. Great Album spectacular songs and Hiatt is the musicians musician.

This song is sooo American. Delta reference, soulful backup vocals, blues/country licks, and going wherever life leads you!

John Hiatt is a great songwriter and singer but The Guilty Dogs were a great put together for this tour.. Saw them live and them all just clicked so well together.

I would love Love LOVE to see John Hyatt and Lucinda Williams Perform together......That is a DREAM.

While we're at it let's add Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, and Willie Nelson! That would be a great supergroup! A country/roots rock Traveling Wilburys.

Roland, Many years ago I went to see Los Lobos play in a midsized club. The previously un-announced opening act turned out to be Lucinda Williams and her band. A John Hiatt show at the same club had Sheryl Crow as the previously un-announced opening act! This was only a few months before she became famous and started playing much larger venues. Both of those ladies put on great shows and had excellent backing bands.

I would not.John Hiatt is far superior to Lucinda Williams.I think she is over rated.

@@patrickhoulihan7210 I don't think she's overrated but I feel like she ran out of material as good as her earlier work. Her music was original and that's rare. I think Hiatt has produced more original work for longer and I think he's underrated.

2:59: "...Now there's only two things in life, but I forget what they are..." I defy anyone to just sit quietly while this song jams along thru their soul!!

kaywat40 To this day. I play this song everytime i am in the bar that i hang in.All the sudden got some regulars singing and liking this tune. But John Hiatt goes way beyond this. What a great artist.

I quoted this verse at my speech at my brothers rehearsal dinner in 2002. Mom thought I made it up.

@@donbebee556 few people in rock can turn a phrase like John Hiatt. Delbert McClinton or Mark Knopfler might come close.

A year or two after the Perfectly Good Guitar tour , my wife and I saw John doing duets with Davey Farragher in a disco! They were standing on the slightly raised dance platform and we were directly in front of them about 3' away. It was great. This might have been the Little Head tour, or a post-record tour, if I remember correctly. They were wonderful. I particularly remember a lovely version of Ethylene with that loopy bassline.

I saw them 4 times on the PGG tour but other than Mike Ward on guitar this looks to be a rather different version of the Guilty Dogs on the Leno show.

@John Hiatt 🎵 Well, I am not young, and the dim recesses of time are challenging to try to navigate, but I was turned onto you sometime before Perfectly Good Guitar came out. Love your work, especially Stolen Moments, which I think is in the top tier of albums, all-time! The collaboration with Jerry Douglas is also fantastic. Thanks so much for your continuing artistry.

a somewhat different version of the Guilty Dogs then the one I saw 4 times back in the day on the year-long tour. I recognize Mike Ward but not sure about the other guys. Backup singers too? they seem superfluous....
