I've seen Hiatt twice, only recently at the Moore Theatre in Seattle 2021, and in Edmonds WA in 2022 with Lyle Lovett. Two songwriters on stage talking and playing their songs, while discussing where the root of the songs came from. Hiatt has grown on me, one of the great songwriters of his time. Hiatt lyrics are from the heart, they hit you.
I feel bad that more of the world doesn’t know hiatts’ music. I’m 25 and this kind of music doesn’t exist anymore. Probably my favorite artist of all time. 🎶
When John's bands aren't on an astral plane with him they are laughing their heads off with each other at how absolutely rockin it sounds! I want to be in a John Hiatt band.
A really great singer/songwriter who blends elements of different styles together seamlessly. No surprise that a series of great musicians have chosen to work with him over the years. A genius.
Even years ago, Hiatt was finally starting to look like that heart carved out of granite, but he's always been a great songwriter. His work will endure.

He does have a weird voice, but you oughtta hear Robert "Junior" Lockwood. He had a really weird voice, but he did mighty well on his tunes: ua-cam.com/video/C0ieKUoYCHo/v-deo.html
"Cartoonish" voice? Gravelly, yes, but chock full of soul. There's a live recording on UA-cam of him doing "I Stood Up" (with Sonny Landreth and the Goners) that has a vocal performance which will knock your socks off. Granted, his voice has lost much of it's former range and power in recent years ---- it happens to virtually every singer eventually ---- but "cartoonish" is best reserved to describe modern, heavily auto-tuned pop-music vocals.
Here is a younger Hiatt singing "I Stood Up". ua-cam.com/video/4MUQZJuA5RE/v-deo.html . If you don't feel this right down to your toes, I feel sorry for you!
Who is the guy left of stage that doesn't play ? I saw John Hiatt and The Combo last year at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. and they opened with this song. Great show.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️
I´ve uploaded the DVD of the complete broadcast to DIME and will be available soon at my blog: my nick dot com (or press the link in my youtube channel info).
That looks like a Gretsch the lead guitarist is playing; Pete Townshend said in an interview that Joe Walsh gave him a big orange Gretsch as a present; Pete opened the case and thought to himself, "It's ugly, I hate it" ---- until he plugged it in! He ended up using that guitar for most of the Who's Next record.
Guitarist is Doug Lancio; I don't know who the others are off-hand. Definitely NOT the North Mississippi Allstars. I saw JH play with them once; I've seen him many times with various backup, and solo, but it was the only time I've seen him where the backing musicians didn't seem to be up to the job.
@@timbryant2259 , it's "Dude" 🙂😁, and you're welcome! The dudette of the household is also a huge John Hiatt fan; I took her to see him play on our 4th or 5th date (it was the Perfectly Good Guitar tour) and she was just blown away. We've seen him many times since. My personal favorites are when he's playing with either Sonny and the Goners or with the Guilty Dogs (Mike Ward and the rest from the Perfectly Good Guitar tour), but his backing bands are almost always top notch. Another highlight was seeing him in a songwriter's circle tour with Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely and Guy Clark. We also saw him play *in a disco* one time ---- on the elevated dance floor! ---- doing duets with bassist Davy Farragher, who you can see playing bass with Hiatt and the Nashville Queens on the UA-cam video of them doing the song "Graduated". We were standing right in front of them, about 4' away. I will give you another tip from my wife: of all the shows we've seen together, the other one that is her favorite is blues-rock guitarist Tab Benoit from Louisiana. He is a powerhouse singer and player, and you can find lots of video of him on UA-cam including some where he jams with Sonny Landreth.
One of the greatest lyricists I have ever heard.
John Hiatt is such a sparkling star in the infinite sky. Thank you for making the world a better place
Hiatt is like a good drink betta with age.
Amen
A master when he plays the blues
Hey- he ain’t no mean ole’ old bastard. 😎
But he sure plays a purty guitar
I saw him live twice, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and in the Chicago area. A unique artist, grossly underrated for sure
Just heard this for the first time. Fantastic!!!!!
One of the best songs I’ve heard. Haunting. At least for me.

J Hiatt is a rock star for sure. My all time favorite .
Same tours, but Pantages Theater in Tacoma with Lyle and The Washington Center in Olympia.
SO glad I found this!! What a song what a performance what an amazing lineup in that band!
I've been a Hiatt fan for some years but I don't know who the band is here. Please give us some names and instruments.

You are wise. I think you probably have a good dad
I love this guitar players tone and phrasing.
He is Doug Lancio, and he's excellent on stage on many instruments.
Sadly, not a telecaster
@@JamesEPowell: Can't beat the warm tone on that Gretsch...
Yes, totally. And that big orange Gretsch...
@@marcjohnson7882 yep, looks like it's modeled after that of the great Chet Atkins
This song feels just right since I spend several 1980s evenings at Madam Wongs watching Hiatt play the blues.
Thank you for making the world a better place with your music

That's some killer lead guitar work right there.
A great American treasure.
He is awesome live…. I’ve been to at least 5 live performances. Every time he’s playin close I attend!
Doug Lancio on the Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins. Absolutely magical guitar soloing ...all the way home.. just perfect!
When John's bands aren't on an astral plane with him they are laughing their heads off with each other at how absolutely rockin it sounds! I want to be in a John Hiatt band.
John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett! Got to see them twice together. So fun, respectful of each other. What a cool concept for a show

Great guitarist.
Great feel.
Great sound.
Great taste.
"Ship to Shore - I can't see the shoreline anymore. Shouldn't be here - I thought I made that clear." Oh yes John. Yes.
he had me at "can't see the shoreline....."

"That great Gretsch sound"....can't beat it.
Great singer/songwriter who has never really gotten the credit he deserves!
"now he's just a mean old bastard when he plays the blues"
GENIUS!
"...there's a debt I owe, I'll never pay before I go; so I sing the blues..."
I saw John at the Troubador in 2010 0r 11, great show in a small venue like that. Love his voice and writing
Dylan was quoted as saying this guy was the best songwriter HE ever heard... not bad eh??
Blast from the past!!
Thank you very much for this beautiful Video !!!

Tell it brother
This is the only good thing I ever got out of listening to Imus in the morning.

I was amazed that friends of mine who all play, had not heard of this man, great that you're getting him out there.
it's one of life's mysterys, he has so many awesome songs that if you are a player they are just manna.
Saw him some time ago but his band is still so tight, lead man is pumping it out.
Hiatt has succeeded against the odds of his cartoonish voice thanks to great writing and a natural feel for storytelling in song.
