Dir. Thomas Vinterberg
Come all you fair and tender girls
That flourish in your prime
Beware, beware
Keep your garden fair
Let no man steal your thyme,
Let no man steal your thyme.
For when your thyme it is past and gone
He'll care no more for you
And every place where your thyme was waste
Will all spread o'er with rue,
Will all spread o'er with rue.
The gardener's son was standing by
Three flowers he gave to me
The pink, the blue, and the violet true
And the red, red rosy tree,
And the red, red rosy tree.
But I refused the red rose bush
And gained the willow tree
That all the world may plainly see
How my love slighted me,
How my love slighted me.

For this clip I muted the original sound and synced it up with the soundtrack version of the song in order to give it a clearer "music video" quality, so without any of the background sounds present in the film. I hope people like it, but if not, there are obviously other clips on UA-cam which keep the original "diegetic" sound, :)
Michael has such a beautiful and warm voice
Why is no one talking about Carey Mulligan’s achingly beautiful voice?! It’s magical every time she sings!
So utterly beautiful. So utterly devastating.
PICK WILLIAM!! Oh for heaven's sake woman PICK WILLIAM!!!!!
Rightttt🥲

Come all you fair and tender girls
That flourish in your prime.
Beware, beware keep your garden fair.
Let no man steal your thyme;
Let no man steal your thyme.
For when your thyme it is past and gone,
He’ll care no more for you,
And every place where your thyme was waste
Will all spread o with rue,
Will all spread o with rue.
The gardener’s son was standing by;
Three flowers he gave to me
The pink, the blue, and the violet, too,
And the red, red rosy tree,
And the red, red, rosy tree.
But I refuse the red rose bush
and gained the willow tree,
But the world might plainly see
How my love slighted me,
How my love slighted me.
Last phrase should read, “That all the world might plainly see, how my love slighted me”...
That o is "o'er" as in "over"
Such a beautiful song. cant stop listening..
Beautiful duet 🥰
WILLIAM BOLDWOOD DID NOTHING WRONG, EVER, AND MICHEAL SHEEN KILLED ME
I mean he did shoot a man and that's never a sollution, but I do pity him a bit. And Micheal Sheen is a wonderful actor❤
❤❤❤❤❤
The song is sung so beautifully with such an angelic voice in such a romantic and touching scene. I have watched this scene for more than ten times, and i am still touched and not tired of it. I am obsessed with it. Thank the director and the singer (who is the real singer ? Mulligan herself ?).
I believe the thyme implies women'S virginity/virtues.
¿Como se llama la pelicula?
Far from the madding crowd
carey sang this herself, she sang on the previous movies she's been on, "Shame" and "Inside Llewellyn Davis" which I definitely recommend watching
A very beautiful song, the movie is also good, based on a true story.
My favourite scene. ❤
beautiful song
This is on my "dancing with my husband" playlist.
I wonder if there's a version of Michael Sheen singing alone
I can't believe there are any thumbs down on this! They probably listen to that drop top, rain drop, peanut butter, fly rap 😂
this is beautiful! thank you for uploading
how beautifull
The grace of this song and this video version!
Btw, this was written by famous Victorian poet Christina Rossetti
Source ? I’ve looked it up and it’s really just a british / irish folk
Katharine of Arrogant the song is much older than that, there are different names for this song

Rebecca😍
who is from Rebecca?
Guilty as charged😅
This is from the movie Far From The Madding Crowd based on Thomas Hardy's novel of the same name
A version of this Scottish/Irish folk song was also used in the Rebecca adaptation
Yours faithfully.
🙌🏻♥️
Why do you think Gabriel looks on with concern as Bathsheba and Boldwood sing together?
I think it's Boldwood's obvious and increasing infatuation with Bathsheba that is unsettling to Gabriel and although he loves her himself, I don't think it's jealousy he feels; he's more concerned about the possibility of things ending badly and feelings being hurt because he knows Bathsheba doesn't reciprocate Boldwood's feelings. This moment of intimacy between them as they sing together can only strengthen Boldwood's passion, so she is on dangerous ground if she wants to discourage him. She is ever the gracious hostess, but - as Gabriel said to her in an earlier scene - it would be unworthy of her to lead Boldwood on, so all he can do is stand by and trust she will ultimately set things right.
That is one GOOD reply...WOW
I need a similar movie, help me.
Another favourite of mine, the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion: ua-cam.com/video/NKdcX6jId-M/v-deo.htmlsi=VdbkX_fKNcoVd68W
Is this the same melody as in the song "Oh, Arranmore"? It seems so to me, but I am not quite sure :)
Gabriel mille volte
Is that Jessica Barden at 0:19??
Yes, she's plays a supporting role in the film
Wonder what the meaning behind this song... 🤔
Thyme represented a metaphor for a woman’s vitality, empowerment and independence back when the poem was written. Thyme translates from Greek to “courage”. It was a herb that was always relied upon to grow in wet climates so poor peasants across Ireland and Britain could always rely on it appearing. Back then people took what they could from the land to survive, especially with the Irish peasant not even owning their own land due to domination from the crown: With this in mind , the Thyme was a reliable herb that everyone had. Irish peasant girls used to leave thyme on the walls beside working young men they fancied, as a sign “I want to be courted”. I think immigrants carried the tradition over to England so they started doing it there aswell. The thyme in this song/poem represents a woman’s independence and heart of courage giving it to the man in the first place, and the song is warning to young girls not to give away their hearts so easily. Back then people’s reputations were everything , social standing influenced marriage prospects and how successful marriages went down could mean the difference between your family having a full or empty belly the following winter. This song is a warning to always keep your guard up and not to fall for the wrong person . I wish people still though that way these days it’s so beautiful
what movie is this from?
Emma Bennet, it's from "Far from the Madding Crowd"
thanx
Can someone please explain the song meaning
Let no man steal your thyme (innocence) , keep your garden fair (virginity)
Movie name??
Far from the Madding crowd (2015)
i'm gay
I understand, my dear honorable man. Have the most pleasant evening.
I see kids present. Or young ladies? Would this song have been vulgar, back then? Curious.
Carey does a good job on this, but she doesn't have the innocence of Jacqui McShee.
Back then, virginity was nothing to be ashamed of, but rather, held in high regard.
Anyone prefers Julie Christie...
why are you here then
Beautiful song
