Yes they are all pleasing patterns, but as you say, it's best to start simple with the horizontal pattern and build oneself up gradually. Is it customary to leave the edges of the fabric on which the sashiko is embroidered raw or are they hemmed or is that a matter of individual preference?
Haven’t put needle in cloth yet but learning and gathering supplies. Your instructions are so well done and organized and you’ve included helpful tips all of which are more than video and words. You are a good teacher.
Such beautiful stitching. Could you please tell me what type and weight the thread 🧵🪡 is that you have been using as it looks quite thick compared to normal sewing thread
i have been in a creative slump recently but learning more about sashiko has my mind going again! i cant wait to try out different patterns and make different things. this video is so clear and so nice to listen to while still being helpful and informative. thank you!!
I was looking for good explanations in French and there you are ! making things smoothly and clearly, with a gentle voice (plus some nice piano background !). Your videos are more than tips, they introduce us to an art and a philosophy. Thank you Xiaoxiao
I love your choice of music and your beautiful soft, gentle voice. I also love the advice and directions you share. Thank you very much. I will soon be doing my first practice piece.
I want to try them all of course, but I will start with the first one first, once I am Happy with the way it looks, I will try the next one.... and so on. THANK YOU!! for sharing your talent with us, and Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. Love how you tell us the History and meaning of all your work.
Thank you for showing your lovely patterns I have watched your three videos, and will now try your patterns whilst recovering from covid. I enjoyed all the videos.
Xiaoxiao, like you suggested, I'm going to start with the Horizontal stitch until I feel comfortable with the length and size of my work. You've done an amazing job showing some different patterns and they are all beautiful! I will then do the "Rice flower" stitch and finally the fundo-tsunagi pattern. I will have to ask my husband how to say it though! He was a Japanese professor for many years. Thanks again for your wonderful and informative Shashiko videos! Stephanie

I really like the way you go about this stiching, I enjoy it, I want to learn this seriously. This sashiko stiching isn't popular in India, But I want to go through it, properly, will help me
Hii there....very nice art of hand embroidery..... I just came to know about sushiko...loved the art .....i m from India .....hoping to make these patterns ....keep it up dear
The embroidery I learnt from my mother is based on this one stitch system at a time. It has beautiful patterns based on this simple stitch system😊 Also women in our village use this stitch for quilting.
Thank you! That sounds fascinating! May I know where you are from and do you know if there's a name for the technique? Actually, sashiko is also used in quilting and mending!
I am originally from South Asia, now live in Norway. The name of the embroidery technique I learned from my mother is "pathani kashida". The ladies who use it in quilting live all through the South Asian Continent, but the ones I referred to are from the villages of Sindh, the southeren province of Pakistan.
So happy to have discovered shashiko and I haven't started. As previously commented, gathering. This video gives me courage to go look and see what I have right now to make this work. Embroidery thread stored from my middle school projects 40 years ago. Thankyou so much for your wonderful video. I'm watching only while hubby watches Godzilla movies. Surely I have a long needle somewhere. Going to hunt for the thimble. Is there any practical item around the house that works work for the thimble? Subscribed 😻
Thank you so much! Really happy to hear that! And, yes, you can make your own thimble from a pair of old jeans, here is how: ua-cam.com/video/rW96lpXKAgA/v-deo.html . Have fun!
could you please tell me the measurement of the round circle you used? I heard 4 cm x 5 cm? that seems more oblong and not a circle. maybe i misheard. please clarify, thank you for your videos
The hanging quilt you showed at the end was beautiful. I can't imagine how long it took. Sadly, I have arthritis, so I am not able to learn this craft. Do you sell any of your work on Etsy?
Thank you! The quilt you see hanging is actually an antique piece from India. While I'm flattered by your inquiry, I'm not currently selling any of my works. Thank you for your interest though!
Hi there! Thank u for these patterns, I find simple horizontal lines so beautiful already :) I was wondering - is there any reason for not crossing lines in sashiko? Some spiritual or something like that maybe?
Hi Denisa, thanks for your very interesting question. As far as I know, this is not spiritual related. From what I've read, to avoid crossing the stitches helps your work stay clean and neat, but you can also find some crossing stitch patterns, for example the "crossing ten" and the "rice" pattern - this is for the purpose of adding texture to your fabric.
Que bom que gostou! Feel free to check out my other sashiko for beginners videos, I explained in them how you can turn regular thread into sashiko thread like.
When mending a garment, do you always make your patch first and then add it on to the garment? Or do you mend it directly on the garment? Thank you. and can I say what a lovely video.
Both! Sewing directly to the patch and garments will make the mend stronger. If your cloth is not that worn out, for example, it's a relatively new shirt, but you made a hole in it by accident, which means the rest of the fabric is still strong. In this case, you can just sew a patch and cover the hole.
Hi Magot, if you check the discerption under the video, you'll see the links for the pen I use. The ink fade out when you apply heat on it. :) Hope it helps! 😊
Hello Xiaoxiao, i got a problem. I want to use natural silk, Dupion. Its red and the colour is bleeding out even after warm washing, so i want to make sashiko with it in black to avoid colour changing...but what pencil i should use because i do not like to wash more often because i should not wash it again. Do you have a tip for me?🙏 I dont want visible lines...
Hi, you should be able to find the link of heat erasable pens under my videos, however, I'm not sure if it will dissolve in lower heat, also the one with black colour sometimes is less easy to get rid of. You can test it before you use it. Another tool I think that may help is the hera marker (amzn.to/3IuopKD), if you are making straight lines. Also, if you use silk, make sure you choose a thinner needle, and you probably want to test your threads, too. Hope it helps. Have fun. :)
I'm so happy I've found your channel. I'm hearing impaired and find the background music very loud and it distracts from your beautiful voice.
