I may have gotten a little mixed up with which number the tips are so i just wanted to clarify that the bigger tip is the 106 and the smaller tip is a 105.
Correct
How many flags are you doing before replacing the tips?
Hey Max - thanks for the tutorial- do the stars get more of a shine to them when you clear coat? I currently use 1 inch wood stars but have been interested to try the dremmel instead.
@@andreww5318 Where do you purchase the wooden stars???? Thanks!!!!
I've never known of a fan that attaches to the collet that blows the dust away from what you're working on. Just found one on Amazon and it says it fits all standard sized collets. Thanks for sharing your video and how you do the stars. I want to make a flag at some point and I agree with the comments. The flags with glued on stars or painted on stars look ok, but IMHO just look bad. I love the hand carved stars. It just looks so much better and so much more thought and care put into the flags. Keep up the great work.
I followed up with the little stone sanding bit to smooth it out and get rid of any rough spots
Great idea!
sweet really like this vid. as im just starting out wood carving. my 5th week in n loving it. thank you lots of hints in there.
Thank you very much! Im happy to share!
Nice work! I don’t have your steady hand, so I’ve resorted to gluing on wood stars on my flags.
Thank you Matthew! As long as it works for you thats awesome!!
Where can i get glue on stars?
erwin benally I get some from Amazon and That Flag Company
Thanks for showing exactly how you carve out the stars. Very informative. I am thinking of using the drop plunger to dig out the center of the stars.
Of course! Im glad it helped, best of luck to you!
I tried the plunger , I did not really liked it.
I will say that I use the Dremel plunger for stars and it works quite well. What I have found is that getting the right depth is tricky and once you have it set, by all means try not to change bits lol.
Very good video....straightforward and to the point!
All these guys with big intro s and music should take note.
You should do a video on how to do a diy video....aww nevermind, they just love to see and hear themselves so they probably don't watch anyone else.
THANKS!
Haha thank you so much I really appreciate it!! 🙏🏼
Thank you Max! Love your work and you got a new sub 👍
Thank you very much Mark i really appreciate it!!
Personally I like to go deeper.
But those are nice strait stars for being free hand. I like them.
Wow what a great video. Very informative! Thanks.
Thank you! Im glad it helped
Great Vid thanks for the tips.
How deep do you go when carving out the stars?
Thank you! Pretty much just deep enough to take off the stain and get nice clean wood
You could try using iron star clavos or upholstery nails if you want somthing a bit easier or cheaper
Hey thats a good idea i should try that! Thank you for the suggestion!
Try Dremel # 195, it will blow your mind. You won't have to change out bits for the stars and it gives very nice clean lines. I use to do the 105/106 setup but haven't since I've been using the 195. Nice job on the flags!
I will have to try that! Thanks for the tip! Thank you i appreciate it!!
@@MaxF01 you are very welcome!
I can't find a 195
I can't find it either. Dremel's website doesn't show a 195. Are you using a #196 cutter?
Sorry guys, I meant the 194
Wow that takes some time to make them stars ⭐️! Good stuff!
After the first 2000 you get into a groove ...
Frick might as well just woodburn the stars, gone be cutting stars and carving for ages lol
Great video, just curious with the flex shaft, how are you keeping the actual dremel still? Mine just wants to vibrate all over the table.
I've done quite a few flags now like this, though I use the Chicago Electric "dremel" with the similar attachment. Do you use just a pencil for outlining the stars? I have trouble seeing the pencil lines, especially if doing indoors/no sunlight, so I use a silver sharpie. Anyone have links to the steel template? Have been considering making a few myself for different sizes. Great video, nice of you to share man.
I have been using just a regular pencil but someone recommended i try use a silver pencil so i have been meaning to try that, i also have been meaning to order one of the steel templates to try it out as a jig and i will make a video when i do. Thank you so much and i am happy to share!
@@MaxF01 - I'd think we could make a template out of THIN steel sheets...? Then touch up the points after. I see some flags that have store bought stars glued on or just white paint for stars and those look pretty bad imo. Hand carved stars look so darn good.
@@RebelRob34 haha i 100% agree with you! That might work! What do tou think would be the best way to cut the stars out of the steel? Maybe the little cut-off wheels they make for dremels?
@@MaxF01 - Email me if you want, I have some questions and ideas for you. Working on a "Thin Blue Line" flag now to donate to local PD. GoUNLV98@yahoo
Hi Rob I do have the link if your interested but I wont post it without Max F permission. They are on You tube however if you look.
Thank you!! Very informative!!
You are very welcome!!👍🏻
Do you sand stars after carving? If so, what do you sand with? Thank you!
So, I've been using a Dremel as well but I get stars that aren't uniform. I think because I'm using the Dremel to carve deeper like a CNC machine would. It appears gettin your video that you just carve slightly below the surface. Is that correct?
That is correct it is just below the surface
Max, great video. Approximately how long does it take you to do the stars?
Thank you very much!! It takes around an hour and a half to 2 hours to mark, outline and carve them
Where do you get the template for the union/stars? did you make that as well? im guessing if one wanted to make a larger flag then a larger template of the union would be needed. Did you have some place like office depot make the template for you?
I purchased it off Amazon, there is a link in the description. You would be correct, i havent ordered any that are larger but im sure they sell them. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!
Thanks for sharing. Good tips.
Of course! Im glad they helped!
Max when you get done carving a star how do you clean up the bottom of the star?
Usually i just brush over it with my hand and it will clean out a lot of the little fuzzy wood shaving and i also lightly torch over them which will burn a lot of them off as well. If you want them to be very smooth you could try using a grinding bit to sand them smooth but that could be very time consuming
Have you considered the steel template? I just saw one posted on fb 15% off for the 10x14.
I have seen those but havent ordered one yet but i should! Do you mean to use it as a jig for the dremel or to use it to trace out the stars?
Max F you use it as a jig! I haven’t gotten one yet, but there is a video on it how to do it, looks easy
@@evanstrain5808 ok ive seen images of people that have used them and the only downside was that the edges looked a little rounded but they still looked awesome! I should order one and try it out for myself to see how they work, thanks for mentioning that!!
Max F yea I noticed that, I think it would help to razor knife all the edges first, which would take hours. But beats buying the Cnc router..unless you have a couple thousand dollars just laying around lol
@@evanstrain5808 haha i hear you there! Seems like it would work pretty good
Hey Max, I saw your other videos and you should check out plinkpop.com you could upload some of these in the home DIY section
Hey man, thanks for the recommendation ill have to check it out
@@MaxF01 Right on! here's a link plinkpop.com/foundry
Would it be easier hogging out with the plunge attachment? Wrists of steel 🏆
I still prefer the flex shaft but i haven't used the plunge attachment enough to get the hang of it but im sure once you get the hang of it, it would make it easier and maybe my hand wouldnt start to cramp up! haha
I use the router attachment. Its great and all when the boards are flat but I don't have a planer so when I do the mini flags I constantly have to adjust the depth so in my personal opinion don't go with the router atatchment.
I bought the stencils you linked and have a flag ready to carve. How did you transfer the stars onto the wood? The outline was there prior to your demonstration of the tips. Razor blade? Or the dremel?
I use tape to hold the stencil in place and then use a pencil to trace them onto the wood👍 hope the rest of the build goes well!!
Great, thank you!
Where did you get fan from. Great vid
Thank you very much!! I got it from home depot next to where the dremels are sold, i think it was around $6. Let me know if you have anymore questions!
I find when I paint the union it doesn’t come out white like yours. How many coats do you use? Do you torch the union?
Hmm, i only do one coat and so far on the unions that ive painted the stars i have not torched them. I do try get a nice thick coat on so maybe that could be why
where did you get the green stain from for the stripe because i cant seem to find it anywhere
Its from home depot, its Varathane water based wood stain tinted in forest green
Max F thanks so much
@@zachstelter6788 no problem man happy to help!
So do the new tips fit in older dremel models? I’m trying to figure out if I need to buy a new dremel or just new tips since I can’t test it.
Im actually not too sure about that i havent ever used any older models, ill try look into it. If you know the size of the opening on yours you should be able to just compare it to the size of the new tips to see if they will work. Ill let you know if i find anything 👍🏼
Max F I just bought some tips, but I also bought new collets just to be safe and the description is in Spanish so hopefully I won’t need to make a second trip and spend $90 on a new dremel 😂
Update: it works and my first Star wasn’t as bad as it thought it would be! Thanks for the vid too!
@@isaacmaze864 thats awesome!! Thanks for letting me know now if someone else asks i can help them out. You are very welcome! Good luck to you👍🏼👍🏼
Done.. im buying this now
Awesome!
Bad ass man👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks man! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great job Max. I have the exact same set up with the 3000 but when I ran it on full speed the drill end got very hot, so hot I couldn't touch it. Have you had that problem?
Thank you very much George! Mine has not gotten to the point where i couldnt touch it but it has gotten pretty darn hot if im using it for longer periods at a time
What are you doing to mark your stars? Are you using a chisel first to make the lines? I've been using a template and tracing it with pencil, but the lines are harder to get straight when I dremel it. Your lines are super clean.
I am also using the template and tracing them with a pencil, ive found that it helps to make sure sure that your pencil is sharp so that you have clean lines to carve and i also use the smallest wood carving tip to try and get the cleanest lines around the edges. Best of luck to you!
This is what I do but I do not like the result, my stars are all fuzzy, not only on the perimeter but also inside.
@@FrenchieFrench1555 Mine also they are hard to get super clean and straight and the same depths. Practice I guess.
Where can you get the deer and star template?
Thanks for the info.
You are very welcome! I hope it helped!
I’m in the middle of my first flag and was wondering why you trace in pencil before carving the stars? I found placing the stencil down and securely taping it then using tip 105 just carving was much faster and made perfect lines.
That does sound a lot quicker! The only reason i havent done that is because i worry that i will accidentally bump into the edges and ruin the stencil but it would be worth a try!
Thank you for sharing!
Are you able to sand inside the star very well? I'm using the same setup but it seems to come out very rough inside the star and I'm not sure how to get it a little smoother
Usually i will just brush over them with my fingers and it will knock a lot of the fuzzies off, otherwise their are sanding tips that would work for sanding out the insides. Another option is you could just lightly torch the stars and it would burn a lot of them off but if you just want clean bright stars then that wouldnt work. I think that the dremel sanding bits #83322 or #84922 would work. Best of luck to you!
I torch my stars but I do not really like the result.
I have the sane issue that Blake has , my stars are very rough inside.
@@FrenchieFrench1555 the sanding bits #84922 and #83322 i think would work for sanding out the insides of the stars
How do you keep the star smooth. When I tried it, the shape was fine, but I had all these different depths inside the star
Were you pushing down hard when you were doing it? If you push too hard the bit might sink deeper in spots where the wood is softer
Nice job
Thank you!
Max F I have the link for the steel templates but I wont share to your channel unless you ok it. I have bought 6 of them, and I am brand new still I have only made one (twice because I messed up LOL). Let me know sir and I will either put it up or not, via your wish. Thanks
Please go ahead!

What depth do u go to? Just a shallow scrap or a little depth.
Its pretty shallow, just enough to take off the color
can the duster fan bit fit on a Wen rotary tool?
Im not sure ive never used one, i tried to look it up online but it just says that some dremel parts are compatible with the Wen but im not sure which ones. Sorry i wish i could help you more!
damn! i thought it was hot in my shop!
Haha yea garages in az in the summer time are pretty much saunas 😂
This one time...at band camp...
Have you tried making a jig to make it easier? I'm working on my first flag and dreading the stars. Trying to think of a way to make it easier.
I havent yet but i have thought about it, if i make one and it works i would be happy to let you know! And yes the stars are a pain haha my hand always cramps up doing them
@@MaxF01 I'll keep looking for one. I have the flag done except for putting the boards together and the stars. thanks
@@kurtc9687 best of luck!
Thanks for the walkthrough!
Have you had to replace any of the carving bits yet/do you know about how many flags you would be able to get out of a single bit using the technique you showed?
I'm making a couple of flags and wondering if I need to plan on getting extra bits right now... beore I start. I'm still on the ones that came with the tool and the one carving kit I purchased.
I think you could get at least 10 flags out of a single bit before it might start getting a little slow. Once they start to get dull youll notice that it will almost try to burn through the wood, rather than carve it. If you have any more questions let me know!
max, I have a question. So I carved 48 of the 50 stars and messed up on star 49 is there a way to fix it without starting over with a new flag? Thanks for your time!
I can definitely relate! I guess it depends on how you messed it up, ive messed up before just carving a little off the line and fixed it by just making that part of the star just a little bit bigger to even it out and usually with 50 stars its very hard to notice a small mistake when looking at the flag overall it just looks way worse when your focused on it, if it got carved too far off the line to fix it that way you could try to add some stain to cover the bare wood and then carve it again and it might not be too noticeable. Hopefully you can get it fixed so you dont have to start over! If anything you could try to fix it since your so close and just see how it turns out. Best of luck to you man!
@@MaxF01 thanks for the help!!
I basically do the same thing but my stars do not turn out that neat
Practice makes perfect my friend!
I know, thank you but I wanted your secret
@@FrenchieFrench1555 im sorry but i aint got any secrets!! I am considering making another video and make it a little more in depth incase their is anything that i missed

When I try to carve a star into select pine the tips both #105 or #106 wants to jump all over the place. Thoughts?
Hmm im not too sure, im actually using select pine on the project im doing now for the first time. I didnt notice it being any different from the common board i usually get, the only thing i can think of is if there is a lot of change between the hard and soft grain because thats when i notice it being the hardest to keep it clean and under control. I wish you the best!
@@MaxF01 what's the difference between select pine and common board? I've usually just been picking up some 1 x 2's at HD
@@slappymcslapster8845 i think the select pine is just cleaner, straighter and overall better wood, its i bit pricey though! I think for a 1x2 its about 6 or 7 bucks. For pretty much all my stuff i just use the common board
Do you paint inside of them or just clear coat?
More recently i have started adding white stain inside the stars and it gives them a whiter look that i prefer but if you like the plain wood you can just clear coat 👍🏼
What black stain did u use?
Is this battery or 120 out let
How did you outline your stars brotha??
Using a pencil and a stencil from Amazon, i linked it in the description 👍🏼
Max F thank you great looking stars by hand I know it’s a pain but sometimes it’s worth it
@@ravenXcozmo thank you very much!
How do you carve the stars that fall in between the lines of wood?
Just do my best to trace it and carve it as if it were a solid piece
Would the dremel styli work for carving stars?
Ive actually never tried it but i have been thinking about getting it and doing a review to see how it works
What green do you use?
It is varathane water based wood stain tinted in forest green👍🏼
I do the whole star with a 194 bit and I do all 50 stars on a 3’ flag in 20 minutes.
Where did you get the pattern to carve the flag
Just off amazon, if you search flag star stencil it should come up 👍🏼
How many stars can you get out of a 105 bit? Same with 106?
If you are using the 105 bit for outlines and the 106 bit for the centers of the stars i think you could probably do about 10-12 flags before they start to slow down
Max F Okay. Wow. I figured 1 or 2 flags.
what black dye do you use.
It is varathane water based wood stain tinted in "Midnight"
What stain do you use for the TGL
It is the varathane water based wood stain tinted in forest green
Stencil the stars then go to town with the dremel
Yes sir 👍
Where is the best place to get stencils
I have gotten all mine from Amazon and they seem to hold up pretty good
Nice
Thank you!!
Looks time consuming, how long does it take?
To trace and carve the stars around 3 hours
How often (if), do you replace the bits?
I think you can get around 12 flags carved before they start to slow down
How are you minimizing glue squeeze out? I just glued my first flag and had more than I wanted. I really tried to use only the necessary amount, put it only on the back half of the wood(away from the finished side), and cleaned as I went. Still got bubbles of squeeze out my the front that's already finished. Frustrating.
Hey man, im so sorry i didnt get a notification for your comment! Hmm im not too sure, it sounds like you did everything right and everything the same as i do it. The only thing i could reallt think of is doing even less glue but it sounds like you are already being cautious with it, i have had people say that its not necessary to glue between the stripes if you glue the stripes to the backer strips, ive never tried it so i cant really say how well it would work but that would solve the problem of glue coming out between the boards. Hopefully that helps a little and i apologize again for the late response
I bought 2 dremels they are junk. The bits are expensive.
Why don’t you say what number the fine tip is etc.
Sorry if i didnt make that clear, the bigger tip is a 106 and the fine tip is a 105
He did say it...and even showed them side by side
Thanks
