+JayGamesOnPC as long as the pc dudes buy it and not pirate it like alot of poeple do. The dev team deserve the money from the sales.so far in my eyes its a work of art. great game.
I'm AMAZED by how gorgeous this game looks on xbox one. This shows that, given that the current gen consoles are obsolete, expert developers can make miracles. This feels like the xbox one's (at least for now) uncharted 4. Well done! Can't wait to play it at 60 fps on pc
***** Decrease treesfx antialiasing in the ini files. it only changes the hair antialiasing and without noticeable visual changes you get much higher FPS
+JippaLippa I cant wait to get this on my PC. What i don't get, how TressFX looks great with not much impact but play Nvidia hairworks on the witcher 3 my GTX 980ti goes up more than 10 degrees! Not to mention the FPS drop. WTF Nvidia! Get your shit right.
I hate how you always talk about the lack of motionblur as a negative point. I hate it when everything in a game becomes blurry just because you moved the camera a little. Motionblur is fine when it's used to highlight an action, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who hates it when it's used all the time. It almost always looks incredibly fake and really doesn't do that much to make a game look smoother.
+XDerKleineX Actually in the context of games that lock at 30fps, motion blur used as way to smooth up the action and not seems laggy. At 60fps, you no longer need it as it naturally smooth. Your right though, I turn off motion blur all the time. Of course, if a game locked at 30fps, I just skip it if there is no unlocking option without adverse effect on physics etc.
+XDerKleineX He didn't state the lack of motion blur as a negative point. He just said that motion blur exists in light performance scenes and not in heavy performance scenes which creates an incosistency.
Years late, after this video, game got improved in a few areas: Consoles: game got 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos. PC: besides all the upgrades over the consoles already, game got: DX12 which makes it run better than DX11. Better real time reflections, which also reduces shimmering, VXAO which improves the already excelent HBAO+ present. Things that are disappointing after all these years: 1. No proper NG+ a la Shadow of the Tomb Raider, only a chapter replay feature 2. While DX12 runs better than DX11, it also requires significantly more VRAM 3. Snow texture on clothes at the beginning mountain section is still low resolution 4. FXAA implementation still gives way to a lot of shimmering 5. No HDR or Dolby Atmos on PC 6. Still high input lag on X1/X1S, compared to PC and other consoles 7. VXAO unfortunately only ever got implemented on DX11 and not DX12 8. Exclusive Fullscreen feature reduces performance and increases input lag unfortunately. As far as everything else regarding the console and especially the PC version? Top notch for late 2015.
Really beginning to like the in-depth analysis of each game you showcase. I love to hear about the technical detail and appreciate the fact that you guys are as crazy about the details as me!
For anyone having input lag problems. I usually use 1 HDMI cable for all my consoles and plug it into the console I want to use at the time. Recently, I found out that using the original Xbox One HDMI cable that came with the console completely eliminated any input lag I had. Hope this helps.
Great video. I like that you went a little more in depth with the technical aspects. At least that's the impression I got compared to the other videos I've watched before.
At first the random disabling of the motion blur did indeed appear to be a very strange phonimu......phenumi.......phenonumi.....phenomeni.....phenomen......thing.
With this game looking this good on Xbox One, I can't wait to see what they will deliver with the PC version. Especially seeing how well optimized the 2013 game was and that they have several months where they can solely focus on the PC port.
+MGsubbie Trust me. This game runs like shit. I'v been playing it a few hours and you notice the graphics are inconsistant throughout. At times it looks like the last Tomb Raider game. 25-30fps all the way through is fucking annoying too. At least with PC you get to play it on ultra with 60fps. When it's out that is.
+Gonad Buster You dont own the game, since i do own the game and it plays just fine, so far is looking amazing... i own a PC, Xbox One and the PS4... so from me there is only objective analysis. The game does look spectacular, so much better than the first one definitive edition and it does not runs like shit. Take care little kid.
The depth and passion you guys have to bringing this kind of information to tech savvy gamers like us is really amazing. Thank you so much for these type of videos. Really enjoying the direction you guys are going especially with bringing together a package for console and PC gamers ranging from budget to higher range.
If anyone ever asks you if videogames are art, ask yourself if you've EVER heard anyone talk with this level of interest, knowledge, appreciation, and pensiveness about any painting or other piece of physical art. I've never seen a more thorough, involved, and technically excellent analyzation of any piece of art. Thank you. I'll be looking to your videos more often.
Just watching this video makes me in awe. Can't wait to actually be able to play and interact with these environments. This video just may have pushed me over the edge to purchase this. I think I will tonight, actually.
Floris R damn. Well they need to work on that. Texture quality for me is the most important setting, and anisotropic filtering just improoves textures further away
Im really impressed with the solutions the devs found to bypass the console limitation and still make a great looking game. Using a mesh with tess for the snow deformation was brilliant.
the game looks good but needs this on/off options: - lensflares - eyeball grime - water drops and dirt on screen - depth of field - cutscenes depth of field input lag and performance needs some good fixes, this problems shouldn´t exist in a released game.
Very good video as always, why don't you have more subs. I also need to say: your english is very clear, I'm a 16 year old stundent from germany, I understand everything.
the performance in this game is awesome, i am impressed with the level of detail in this game. the game designers are brilliant to design a game with this amount of graphical fidelity and get it to run properly on xbox one hardware. gaming consoles this generation are very underpowered and ps4 is no different despite what people think. until this game comes out on pc there is no other game like this at the moment.
Great work with the interactive snow. The hair is also the best I've seen. I wonder what the PC version will look like maxed out! Better AA solutions will help, along with the bump to 1080p.
So I guess what we can learn from this is that this approach to lighting that's cubemap based with PBR can look incredible in outdoor scenes but the specular maps start to behave really unrealistically indoors. That's what makes stuff like CP2077 and Metro Exodus so comparatively beautiful both outdoors and indoors when the raytraced lighting is on.
The input latency is the only thing that would really concern me. Hopefully responsiveness will be improved on XB1, and when it makes its way to other platforms.
The motion capture coupled with TressFX on Lara looks amazing. It's too bad the rest of the game I think falls a bit short when you consider the aliasing, and inconsistencies in the physically based rendering system. Can't wait to see how much better it runs on PC and PS4.
This was really really interesting video! Good job! Can't wait for this game, it looks damn great. I loved the 2013 reboot and it's still one of the favourites.

I just finished this last night. Overall I really enjoyed it and I agree with this tech analysis. Drthere were many moments that were absolutely stunning visually but there were also portions that felt rough in comparison. it almost feels like certain portions of the game didn't receive quite as much tlc when being created or had a less talented group of artists in charge or something. overall this game is great though.
I miss the PS1/PC titles, mainly because the platforming required some thought and precision from the player. Here platforming is effortless, there's no risk in it and traversing the environments requires little to no thought. Only the puzzle rooms offer something different, while the rest of the game is basically Uncharted.. Yeah, it really isn't my cup of tea. I prefer the tanky controls over the automated, effortless platforming. Although the combat in the older games suck.

Can't wait for this to come to PC. All that awesome technology will be put to 100% use. By the way, this game rocks and I hope Xbox gamers enjoy it. I'll play it on PC. The TressFX effects are amazing and my favourite part of the game's graphics. Thanks for the awesome video Digital Foundry.
literally everyone i know says it hallow-een and I've only ever heard british say hollow or i guess weird areas in the us that probably also call soda, pop and again maybe it's just cause where I'm from but I've only heard lah-ra when referring to the tomb raider
It looks better than I was expecting, but the aliasing still makes it remind me of Uncharted 2 or Halo Reach. The video compositing is interesting, weird to see how developers still haven't grown out of tricks like using prerendered material, but it looks really good so I can't complain. Crystal Dynamics have done a good job. I am curious if the PS4 version will be 60fps like TR2013 though.
Is it just me or is this the most technically complete review DF ever done for a game ?

+Nicholas Plummer That's what devs should care about, not that bullshit resolution. Lighting is the key for beautiful graphics :)
If you follow the link in the description they've always had a very in depth analysis on the website.
nx gamer was embarrassing them **in his videos** so they stepped their game up
Yes, but I prefer NXgamers performance review instead.
Horizon, Tomb Raider, and Uncharted.....all wonderfully done games

I freaking love these analyses! As a layman in technological field, I find them extremely interesting and well produced. Very impressive stuff.
9:40 - I think it's called radial blur.
Great job Crystal Dynamics, can't wait to play this beauty!!! also good work on the in depth analysis DF.
I have been playing this game nowadays and it just absolutely looks fantastic. What a beautiful game!
Wow. This is the first video I've seen on your channel, and your breakdown is incredible. Thank you! Waiting for the no-compromise PC version.
AWESOME video! I've been waiting for this sort of technical review since the very first Tombraider!
If anyone could tell me the name of the music that begins at 13:45 I would really appreciate it, thanks!

Love the analysis guys, even years later. Would also love to know what music you use in the background. Thanks!
it’s from the soundtrack of the game
Amazingly well made video, good job, digital foundry! :3
keep doing theses technical reviews for upcoming games pls! They are great
why do consoles use that low anisotropic filtering? i always put it on X16 because it doesent affect my fps, not 1fps difference.
Because the memory has not enough bandwidth for x16 anisotropic filtering.
Floris R damn. Well they need to work on that. Texture quality for me is the most important setting, and anisotropic filtering just improoves textures further away

Beautiful game btw.
That's a gorgeous looking game. Very in-depth analysis, too, well done.
Very interesting analysis - keep doing these!
i don't understand why anisotropic filter is setted low, it doesn't have a big impact on the performance
looks gorgeous.
That Lara Croft GO soundtrack though

This game looks beautiful I could careless about shadows and textures in real time this game is awesome
Please make highly in-depth videos, such as this, for other games in the future.
Great work with the interactive snow. The hair is also the best I've seen. I wonder what the PC version will look like maxed out! Better AA solutions will help, along with the bump to 1080p.

Rise of The Tomb Raider Is Amazing
I can't wait to pick this up layer today!!!! I am ready
Love how you used the Lara Croft GO soundtrack
Such a great video, guys. Well done. Now let's just wait and see if the PC version comes out nicely.
The input latency is the only thing that would really concern me. Hopefully responsiveness will be improved on XB1, and when it makes its way to other platforms.
This video was incredibly detailed. Great job! I subscribed.

Really great analysis, thanks :D
I'm loving this game, one of my favorite games I've played. There was one major stutter that happened to me. Before an ambush fight, the game just froze for about 3 seconds. Than everything was normal again. Beautiful game though.
Great vid, enjoyed this much more than just frame rate tests.
Seriously....How can anything like motion blur be excelent? Any setting which makes your screen blury is an abomination and must be ended before you even start the game :-D
This is the most educational crowd of You Tubers I've ever seen commenting on games. Future Developers
Great work on the video!
Anyone know the song from 2:57 to 3:30 and up?

Can you do an analysis of DriveClub Bikes?
+VariantAEC No real need for that... It's just driveclub with bikes
+WH250398 but the bike models are ulttra high detail and can be played in the rain with a full track of racers. Would be interesting.
No, it's exactly the same as the cars, but with different handling. It's a locked 30 fps

WH250398 What are you saying no to?
The cars are also ultra high detail.

I mean that it's no use testing, i never said anything about the detail
