Hats off to the owner to preserve a little bit of history. Hope they have deep pockets.
What's missing at my workplace is a madman in a kilt.. I reckon we'd get heaps of work done if we had more bearded guys in kilts.

I worked on my Uncles 1938 48’ wood boat as a commercial salmon fisherman from 16-20 yrs old in 1979-83 out of Monterey Bay. I am transfixed by what you are doing and accomplishing. It is absolutely fascinating. Keep up the great work. I have no way to describe the intensity of physical work and the in depth curriculum being passed to everyone. Love it!!!!
I love the comparison between this project and Tally Ho! However rotten the boat may be, the physical shape in space *is* the boat! I like the idea that keeping that intact while working keeps the original boat intact

Shipwrights are a breed apart. The variety of skills and experience required to claim that title exceed most skill sets... millwrights are in the same category and jack of all trades perhaps as well. I'm but a hack by comparison... I can get it done, probably - it won't be as aesthetic and finely crafted but it will work. Not saying it will float...
They should make more longer shows in-depth restoration like tally ho

Is the test with the magnet to detect the quality of stainless steel valid???
It'll just tell you wether there's iron in it or not. You need to make sure you get the right stainless by looking at the package you're buying.
My god, how long was that ship underwater?! There doesn’t seem to be one drying anything on that boat…except maybe the concrete. Even the metal encased in the concrete is rusty.
88 years, in some of the roughest conditions in the world. Frozen into the ice many times, beached, etc. she was built like a tank with a layer of ironbark on top of the original planking. And then copper was eventually added on top of that.
She certainly is in a bad way, makes Tally Ho look pristine when Leo first took her on. Appreciate that North Star is a working boat, but hopefully the aim is to restore/rebuilder to a high standard respecting her history. Lots of work around very rotten and wet timber and rusted and rotten metal work. Stripping down is nearly always the relatively ""easy" part, but how are you going about recording the shapes and details? Are there drawings of the boat, and/or new drawings being made as the work progresses, and are photos being taken of the parts as well as measurements, or how will the replacements be accurately reproduced? Whatever, wishing you all the very best of luck in your mission to bring her back to life.

It's a GM 4-71, lots of power. Installed laying on its side to fit under the galley. Very odd installation.
Its only like 160 hp from that block. Sure with lots of torque . @@fahmoh

ln the deconstruction of "Tally Ho", Leo Sampson and his lone helper were quite careful, that they salvaged a lot of hundred year old wood which they cleaned and reused in the new, refurbished Tally Ho.
This one is at least 8 feet longer than Tally Ho and younger by about 25 years so there could be more salvageable, precious wood.
the condition of tally ho's timber was much better than this - this is at an advanced state of decay, as has been stated by many pro shipwrights/riggers in this series. also tally ho had been gutted. i'm sure they are documenting and labeling many of the salvageable components, if not all.
@@brianmolhoek8403 But the North Star was still floating, towed afloat; Tally Ho laid on its side, beached and on the mercy of the tide for years before Leo found it. Was it that although Tally Ho was 25 years older, it was better built and built with better wood?
I'm not sure about that "a lot wood” being salvaged on Tally Ho. The only real part of the old girl left as originally used would be the Transom. It is not a restoration anymore but more a recreation, which is fine. But it would seem at some point just build a new one from scratch that's really what Tally Ho is now, less work, probably cheaper and it serves the same purpose.
@@NOLAART You're probably right. l just observed that a lot of Tally Ho's upper planks were saved, and so a lot's been repurposed by Leo and his crew to various parts of the new Tally Ho.

Let's see if you agree with my statement...you are NOT refurbishing/updating a boat with some history.... you are REBUILDING is pretty much from scratch with little of the old girl left............
I just posted just about the SAME question. I’ve asked that about this boat and the Tally Ho. It doesn’t make any sense to do all this extra work just to basically build a brand new boat around a few save pieces of questionable wood.
With this boat and the Tally Ho, I ask the same question. At what point are you just building a new boat? Why wast all this time and effort? Just cut it up to take measurements, save the hardware and build another replica. Trying to tear anything down while also trying to keep it together at the same time is at least double the work if not more. And to safe what a few boards so you can give the boat the same name. You’re kidding yourself. It’s just a new boat with a few old parts on it……so just build a new boat and put a few old parts on it. Stop trying to build a new boat around a very few old parts. It’s taken years and an enormous amount of money to “rebuild” Tally Ho” and it still hasn’t set sail. I’ve followed it, at first a lot….then less…then barely. It was excruciating. But what was evident is that there is VERY little of the original boat there. Say 10% and that being generous. Aside for the hardware and so little wood you could probably have stacked it in a corner after tear down, it’s a brand new boat that could have taken way less time to build. I’m not trying to be negative though I realize that’s how it may be coming off. I’m just trying to understand the logic here. Digging out all that concrete and rotten wood while gingerly trying to save boards only to find out they are rotten anyway seems crazy to me.
I think the Acorn to Arabella had the right idea, they had a donor boat and just took what was usable and built everything new.

If we use classic cars as a comparison, there is a sliding scale for restoration and keeping original identity. It is a difficult situation to navigate.
I do not understand the fixation with how much of the final product is “original” or whatever you want to call it. Specially with a project you have nothing to do with. Call it whatever the hell you want. If you don’t’ like watching people working toward a common result and learning what they want to do while they are doing it, then watch something else. This commentary about “why all this because it ain’t original” is neither constructive nor of interest but rather blowing hot air.
