I'm 63 and decided to learn to play cello. I've just viewed your 6 Fun Cello Bow Techniques video and it's AWESOME! Thank you very much for putting this on UA-cam!
You are welcome George! I have a lot more cello tips videos. Welcome to my channel!
w
I’m 82 and started cello when I was 60. It’s been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. In my retirement years(after teaching private piano and singing in choirs for YEARS) I am loving my experience as a cellist in my community symphony. And the university orchestra needed an extra cellist several years ago. So many friends my age are not so lucky. I always have something to do, rehearsals to attend, concerts to play.
Keep practicing. You won’t ever be sorry. New friends and beautiful symphonies await!

That is great Peggy.
I played guitar and sax before
and at 60 i also took up the cello. I am now 71 and still have a teacher. I use a custom size cello, 4/4 with short scale neck because of arthritis. Learning cello has been real slow for me but i will get there.
@@cow1939 thanks for your comment. I'm 50 and I was thinking that it was already too late to begin with cello.
I'm 77 years old and just picked up the cello. Your video was very helpful. Thanks
I AM LIVID! EVEN FURIOUS! These exercises helped me tremendously within MINUTES!! My cello teacher had the choice of actually teaching me and getting mad at me for not magically knowing the dark cello magic (flips table in rage) thank you so much I'll have a blast to learn how to play the cello for real this time.
Can you teach a beginer a whole song and if so i play many instruments..but chello is hard iv been playing for 8 months and you have taught me much..thank you ....you help my soul to jam...out..songs for beginers that want to inpress there friends and such.....i love your many chellos so cool ...i like the old ones... The Darker one is a cool sound ...god bless....🙏
😁👏🏼
Just a fabulous lesson, thanks Princess 🌹🌹
Thank you for the bowing tips. All of them are very helpful.
Thanks! My instructor suggested I look you up. I'm glad she did.
I joined Strings at my school 2 weeks ago and thanks to you, I’ve improved so much
I am so happy to hear that!
Wow u genius. Ive been attending lessons for over a month now and still learning only holding the bow lol
im going to try these soon, i been playing cello for about 3 years and my biggest struggle is holding the bow because i learned holding the bow wrong and it really hurts after a while of playing so now im trying to learn the proper bow hold and its a struggle because it feels weird so im going to do these thanks :)
Some of these exercises and tips seem like these will be helpful on violin and viola as well as we also use our fingers to do a lot too, a lot of the techniques used on cello - while not exactly - are very similar as all these instruments are in the same family.
Glad it was helpful!
This hit the nail on all I need to practice on!! I started playing years ago but never really corrected my bow techniques. Im still really struggling but Im definitely practicing these, thank you ☺️
Wow this is a GREAT video. I’m not learning cello, but my son is. In order to help him practice better, I’ve been watching a lot of UA-cam videos lol. Your video is easy to understand, and you get right to the exercises. Thank you!
So glad that you and your son found this helpful! I have a free cello masterclass coming up. You can apply here: bit.ly/3EExiMD
Thank you so much i loved your exercices ❤🎉
All your videos are so enjoyable.
I'm a recently retired adult and have started learning cello as first instrument ever. Your bow suggestions are wonderful, thank you! I especially appreciated the tp roll exercise as my bow finds itself in all sorts of angles.
This is such a huge help to me! Thank you, Wendy Law!
Recently returned to my cello after 6 months.... I already have blisters on my lefthand fingertips. These exercises are great to help me rest them and allow me to still practice cello! Thanks
So glad that you found this helpful
Thank you for the video!
You’re very welcome
This was so helpful! I was struggling with bow techniques and this was really helped.
Thank you, Wendy.
This was so helpful. I’ve been taught finger push-ups before, but I was taught to lift the whole bow. Watching you use your fingers for string crossings just made the exercise click. Now I can play string crossings without using just my forearm and shoulder.
Great tips! Sometimes It's also good to flip the bow and hold it on the tip! This help very well in Rococo variations in the first one, or similar pieces.
Miss Wendy Law, I am a cello student in Brazil. I discovered your channel at the suggestion of UA-cam and I loved it. Thank you very much.
I’m so happy that you found me. I hope that you enjoy all my videos. And I would love to visit Brazil and perform there one day. One day soon I hope!❤️
Thank you very much!! I’m relying on several Cellist youtubers (including you) and this really helps. Specifically the last technique. I struggle with keeping the bow straight and Im waiting for time to make me play like you eventually!
I'm watching this a year late but I forgot some of these exercises and fully intend to teach them to my kids. I remember they helped me a lot. Thanks for the reminder!
Fun to watch.thanks
Just found your channel! After 20 years of playing violin and 20 more of not playing anything, I decided to learn cello at 50, and it has been so much fun not to hold the bow like a violinist I’ll certainly try your bow techniques. Thank you!!
Wendy, this looks really helpful. I hope to try working on these tomorrow. Thank you.
Watching this in April 2020 makes me wonder how you could possibly use toilet paper so casually. #toiletpapergate🤣
Just hoard the cardboard tubes...LOL
These have been the most helpful that I’ve seen on UA-cam so far, thank you!!
I’m so glad the video was helpful to you. Don’t forget to check out the six fun Cello left hand technique that I just uploaded!
This tutorial is hella fun and actually makes me want to exercise :)
I love your videos, incredibly helpful for beginners.
Miss Wendy Law, I will be very happy if you ever perform here in Brazil. Thanks for listening.
Great techniques. Love it!
Thank you I’ve improved
Excellent Tips. Thanks
Awesome video. Thanks Wendy!
Thanks so much Wendy! Your videos have been so helpful!
Great exercises! Thank you. I knew a couple of them but I am going to practice them all!!
It really helped me thank you
You’re welcome
who knew that showing tp during your video would bump you to the top of the playlist! lol. Thanks for the bow practice techniques. : )
Hi Rebecca! Thank you so much for bumping my video to the top of the playlist! So glad that you found the video helpful
This was a great video, exactly what I was looking for
Fantastic
These were great! I really appreciate you making these videos! I've been applying them! They help! Thank you!
You are welcome Paul!
Thank you so much! you are awesome! your instructions are very clear
The TP exercise is a good way to get some of the same muscle memory training as you would from a bow guide, without the embarrassment of using a bow guide 👍
All of these are brilliant
u. I am studying music right now and my complementary instrument is cello, I play the piano and sing so I thought choosing this instrument would add so much to my way of understanding what music is and it is helping a lot. I love the cello. I am starting with the Susuki method and all your videos are so helpful and encouraging ♥ Right now I don't have a cello on my own so I borrow my school's one. Looking forward to having mine soon.
#6 was great!! I'm helping my son as a beginner. I couldn't figure out how to help him keep his bow straight! Thanks for the tips!
This exercises are very help full
Great ideas!
Thank you so much, Wendy!
I love the toilet paper exercise. I've been having a problem keeping my bow straight, and this helps a lot!😊
Thank you for your tips!
Thank you so much for the great tips 👍!
Thank you Wendy I am practicing for that 🤗
Wonderful
Great Tips. Thank you.
I am 54, play the violin and recently switched to the cello. The bow feels like my enemy. 😂 I am definitely going to utilize these exercises. I know I'm doing many things incorrectly, (i.e the death grip) and I'm finding I must ice my wrist after 20 minutes of practice. I think I'm over pronating as well Your examples will really help me realize it's not necessary. My biggest problem is my thumb. *OUCH* Thank you for the very helpful information.
Oh my take it easy! The violin bow grip is totally different from the cello one. Stay tuned for my upcoming course where u teach correct technique and posture to avoid pain and tension.

These are great pointers! Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Wonderful explications.
Bravooo .
Thank you 😊
I recently just started playing cello about a week ago and I’m really enjoying the exercises. My bow hold is getting better but trying to play the A string with a straight bow is giving me so issues
So helpful
Thanks for these tips. I did the 1st one too much when I was getting started and the 6th is brilliant rsrs. Hugs from Brazil :D
Son fun and very good
Thanks
Thank you for this teaching God bless you Amen.
Thank you so much!
To be honest i think the toilet paper one i think its good when it actually does have some paper on it, i think it Stabilises it.
Thanks again Wendy you really encourage me ❤
Sara ❤
Thanks!
Thank you Wendy! I will share the last exercise with my student.
Oh thanks so much!! 😃🙏🏼
Thank you wow it was so helpful amazing!!!
Everyone needs 101 comments.. i play sax, have always loved cello..and seeing you makes me wish i had a great string teacher way back in the day.

Eu amo essa violoncelista!!
I actually liked the sound close to the bridge; I’m an experimental Artist!! 🕺🕺🕺🎸😁😁😁
Enjoyed much
I love all your videos and they really help. Got my cello about a week ago and I’ve been incorporating the tips so keel up the great work
Well congrats on the new Cello. How’s it going?
@@WendyLaw it’s going well I’m starting to develop callus on my fingers. I am incorporating vibrato more, I can move my bow more freely and it’s getting more and more comfortable to hold and play. I really enjoy it. Sometimes I really lose track of time when practicing
thanks a lot it was so useful
Great!
Wendy, seriously, the toilet-paper thing, you are a freaking genius 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so very much!
Tysm❤️
Great tips and video, Wendy. Subscribed!
Thanks Andrew
Hi Wendy those exercise are great as a noble iam injoy learning the cello looking for to other tips that you may have
Thank u
thank you for your ideas! :)
You are welcome! 🙏🏼
I died laughing. I hadn't the toilet paper trick in ages... You made my day Wendy...Guess I gotta go get a roll and practice... #Practice40urs
😂 hahaha 😆
OMG, 20 and smth years I am playing cello, but the toilet paper I hear for the first ever time!!! So fun!!!
Thanks! It is very helpfull! And also i recomend one more exercise! It is „playing on the air”. You just pretend to playing but you keep your bow above the string. What is really important that you need to keep bow as close to string as you can but don’t touch it.
7.00 is the reason youtube recommended me this today,
The toilet paper 🧻? Haha yes that’s before the toilet paper cello challenge too! 🤣
Your voice is "divinal"
thank you!:)
Wow I didn't know it's not the wrist but fingers strengths too!
Excellent mam
Great vid so helpful
So happy to hear!! 🤗
Held my bow for less than half-hour; I THOUGHT my hand had dried up like a prune 😂 the cramps are insane, and I THOUGHT I was all athletic and stuff ❤ 😅😅😅❤️😇😇😇
The climbing monkey exercise seemed impossible to do at first, but once I slowed down the video and observed carefully... the key seems to be understanding how the thumb takes a step in between the two sets of fringers taking the steps. 3-beats rhythm. Thank you for sharing!
Hahah great analysis!! 👏🏼
Wow you're really good!!!
Thanks so much
