I had the same problem. I think it has to do with the way you are holding your cello. The vibrato just brings the problem out. If the cello is not tight against your chest in a flat way, or if it's leaning to the side a little, any vibrato will make it shake. Make sure if you let go of your hands the cello falls on your chest comfortably, in effect you need to be hugging your cello closer so it doesn't shake.

Oh man this was useful. I've been playing for 12 years now (though I started when I was four so most of them don't really count) but I've just taken on my first student. I was completely stumped when we encountered a problem with vibrato, all the techniques I had used to learn it had slipped my mind so this has been a great refresher on how to explain, and exercises for, vibrato. Then go get your cello man ! It may be late but just stop thinking too much, learn it, find a teacher if possible, dedicate a regular part of your free time for practicing it and enjoy playing for yourself ! In 10 years you'll be getting close to your 30's and will already have 10 full years of practice under you belt. It IS something ! Look at all the young folks playing amazing stuffs at 15 or 16. Most probably they started playing at 5, so 10 years of practice is what they have too...
Now Imagine yourself reaching the same 30 without even knowing how to hold a bow nor play a basic C scale. Believe me you'll be slapping yourself even harder for not having started before, because you could be already playing a ton of neat stuffs.
I started learning the cello only 3 years ago, and I'm going on my 35s. The biggest thing I regret is not having started at 19 when I bought my first apocalyptica album and fell in love with the instrument. Don't waste as much time as I did, you will regret every bit of it !

I asked for a cello for my graduation present and my husband got me one, I’m 25 and a mom to a toddler I just sit and mess around and make noise at this point but it kinda chose me in a weird way, my husband plays the violin and I asked to hold it one day after I got him new strings, I play castanets and sing but don’t know any other instrument, I didn’t like the violin though my arms were too short to complete a whole note properly so I saw a cello and asked to hold it, it like molded to my body, but the bow was missing. Later I tried to find a music store in town that sold castanets and I saw the cello and asked to try it. They handed me the bow and it was like I had been doing it my whole life! Both the instructors were like “you’re doing everything right, you basically would need to just learn the name of the notes and their placement, and you’d be able to play since you can read music.” Bowing is fun and easy but I’m struggling with vibrato. I wanna learn a good technique before I start learning notes but it’s not impossible. I randomly just picked one up one day and made noise with it and my body was like “yes, we like this” so when I finished my degree my husband asked what I wanted for graduation and I said a cello. Low and behold, a cello showed up at my door. Just ask for it as a graduation present if anyone asks hahaha. Hope you get your cello!
