    Sorry about the John Denver comment. Actually, your videos have changed my playing and a good part of my life for the better! I started out as a brass player (trumpet-french horn-euphonium) before a 30-year career in orchestral conducting. I always loved the sound of the cello, and around 15 years ago I started to study. I had private lessons for a while, and then my teacher died. I've been treading water while playing in a 4tet with some very talented and professional players. Your videos have energized me . . . I'm now excited about practicing, and I improve every single day! Thank you! You are the best!

    Yeah i just got a new traditional cello and as you can see from my profile pic i have an L&C cf(Luis and Clark carbon fiber). Which is ridiculously easy to play compared to any wooden cello. And its been a bit of a struggle breaking it in and getting a good sound from it.

    Hello, Wendy! So, I’m a completely blind musician coming from 30 years of guitar. I feel as if I’m able to make great sounds on open strings, but when I put my left hand into the equation, things sound really weak. On guitar, this would usually be causd by not pressing hard enough on the strings, or by pressing at a weird angle, but I recognize that I’m dealing with a completely different animal. It sounds almost like I am muting the string. Any advice that you could give in a blind friendly way? Thank you, I love your content! Be well.

    • @jtotheulian708
      @jtotheulian708 Рік тому

      hi I am a cellist so maybe I can help you, I am not sure what you mean by muted but I think it could be the angle you are playing it. You either want to push directly on top of the strings or from the side where the strings is going left (when you push from the side the notes sound clearer which generally you should always do especially in fast pieces) It could also be where your placing the bow. You should generally place the bow in the middle of the bridge and finger board. I think if you are getting a squeaky sound it could be that you are playing to close to the bridge. It also could be how you are holding and playing the bow. Your bow might be playing at an angle. What I would say you should do is take the bow and put it directly on top of the bridge and play it. You will get this muted white noise like sounds but it will help you play the bow without an angle. You want your wrist to move also but not to much. It should feel natural, essentially your wrist should be like a door hinge moving with you arm/ bow. Or it could simply be the rosin. You should also lift your finger high enough so they aren't touching the strings but not high enough to where there is tension. hope this helps. I am not sure exactly your situation but hopefully I provided some solutions! have a nice day!

    I have problems with my bow hold and usually get pain below my pinky finger, right above the wrist. Do you think this is due to too much tension in my hand? This is the most frustrating thing for me

    • @limin1462
      @limin1462 3 роки тому +2

      You’re probably squeezing your thumbs. Try playing without the left thumb touching the next of the cello so that is is relaxed. Typically whatever your left hand does your right hand will do as well. Try playing some scales or some bach without the left thumb and see how it effects your right hand tension

    When my Teacher changed from saying "It's not the instrument, it's you." To "It's the instrument, not you".
    That's how I know my technique has improved to the point, the cheap instrument is no longer able to keep up.
    Technique is indeed important, for any instrument. Not just the instrument quality.

      What I mean Wendy, is that when I saw the video thumbnail on your page I thought you posted a new vid. But then after seeing the premier with premier time, I realized it was another cliffhanger for now, at the time. But I know the reward side of things that will be coming in about an hour & a half from now will be worth the wait, that’s for sure.
