    I worked along here for 15 years probably driving at least a few hundred thousand miles. We wore out a lot of trucks. I’d drive in any weather. One time I was heading to Prudhoe from Fairbanks and it took me 10 hours just to get to Atigun Pass. I have also driven the whole thing in under nine hours. I also loved driving it in the dark. I had 4 real bright lights plus headlights and you can see a ways. You would also see the trucks miles away.I have hundreds of pictures some even taken at the same location but different seasons. I also have been transported in a helicopter along this road.

      To travel in this region for all those years must have been truly spectacular. Also seeing the seasons come and go in the Arctic regions must feel like driving in a different world every few months. We loved our drive along the Dalton Highway.

      @PhilUys  4 роки тому +2

      Ha Ha..It is easy to do in a Land Rover. My LR has not been in a service center in the past 25 years. Nothing to worry about. The real problem is rather the mechanical ignorance of some people.

    • @stewoe7157

      @@PhilUysYeah, I was just kidding, but you know since new Land Rovers are particulary known for being so unreliable, but the old ones are much more reliable (as is the case for most older cars). Those cars from before 2000, you can fix yourself if you have problems. The newer ones require computers to plug in and have electronic problems all the time. I'd choose an older car over a new one all the time, cuz you know those new cars feel so 'dead'. They don't feel like they belong to you anymore, they feel so 'plastic'. But hey I'm getting off topic here lol, I probably sound like a Boomer (I'm gen Z btw.). Awesome road trip, I'd love to do that myself one day. It's like that place that hardly anyone has on their bucket list and that makes it nice and quiet.

    • @PhilUys
      @PhilUys  4 роки тому +2

      That is true, new vehicles are basically consumables. This LR is a 1994 model and will certainly be used by the next generation. I am a Boomer. Judging by your interesting surname you must be of Dutch decent.

    • @johndavid1585
      @johndavid1585 2 роки тому

      Yes very true, my import specialist mechanic told me never buy a car that has “Rover” in its name. Very unreliable, they are in the shop constantly. I’m surprised your defender didn’t rust out completely during the drive.

    • @PhilUys
      @PhilUys  2 роки тому

      @@johndavid1585 Rust can be a huge issue on Defenders. This Defender has from the factory a galvanized chassis and firewall with lots of other galvanized bits. Rust is in this case a non event. It is still important to wash the vehicle after driving on salt roads. Back home in South Africa salt is never used on our roads. This Defender will last many many decades. The engine is all mechanical with no electronics at all. Parts are cheap and easy to find. I have owned it for 26years already. Without doubt my children will use it some day. Best of all it is an appreciating asset. Cheers

      @@PhilUys It definitely is amazing. I did the Alaskan cruise 3 years ago which included Skagway, Juneau & Ketchkin...all the port towns. It was a lot of fun but I hated being bound to the ships schedule...didn't get to explore as much as I wanted to. Next time I'm definitely flying. Yeah RHD is very seldom seen here. I'm born & raised in NYC & have only seen 2 RHD cars in my city in all my 31 years. My next car is definitely going to be an RHD one. It looks soo awesome to drive opposite of what we're used to in the states minus left turns lol those might be a little scary. You saw very few Land Rovers because yours is an older model & being old & analong with very little cpu built into it is why yours is still on the roads today. Your Land Rover & that era was WAYY more reliable than all the junk they're making today...it all looks pretty & neat with insane amounts of computers & not the best reliability longterm

    I see from your comments you guys drove all the way up from Argentina so I am sure it was not a feasible option, but in the part where you were sliding around and hard time keeping it in a strait line if you had good studded (or even non studded) true snow tires that probably wouldn't have been a problem at all for ya. The big semi's don't use snow tires but they are so heavy their weight alone gives them more traction than a car.
    Pretty cool drive to do though. :) Hell of a drive for sure.

      No, we did not have chains. It also was not necessary. We did no preparation as we were overlanding from South America and did exactly the same modus operandi as before. The only thing I added was a sump heater and two infrared lamps to keep us or the engine warm. We did need mains power for that. At Coldfoot we slept in the car.

    How did you prevent rust?? The road must be full of salt.

    • @PhilUys
      @PhilUys  3 роки тому +1

      The Dalton Highway does not have any salt on it, unlike all the other main roads. I did still do a lot of rust prevention. Washing the LR as often as possible before the salt becomes part of the vehicle. Spray Tectyl ( heavy wax like substance) on vulnerable areas like end of bolt threads, door hinges, any area that needs protection. I am lucky that on this Defender everything was galvanized by the factory, the chassis the firewall and all metal trimmings. Having said that I would hate to drive on salted roads all the time. I saw many cars rusted too pieces. Luckily where I live we have no salt roads at all.

Land Rover probably does not know the finer details either. In a way that makes it more exciting to discover what your Land Rover is all about. Mine was also painted the Camel Trophy color by the factory although it never took part in any Camel Trophy events. Only two were made like this in South Africa by special order from the first owners.

    I would like to try a motorcycle trip in the winter. Possible?

    • @PhilUys
      @PhilUys  4 роки тому +4

      It would be a seriously difficult undertaking. Lots of factors to consider. Motor cycling in tempetures that could be in the -30 tees combined with the wind chill factor will be dangerous. Any exposed flesh will be frost bitten in seconds. Your hands will be cold enough to prevent adequate bike control. Your toes will suffer from sitting still for hours on this 800km journey. Then you have to deal with the ice which in places stretch for many kilometers. Traction is zero. On a motorcycle your chances of falling is positively guaranteed. Just touching your brakes on the ice can cause you to loose control. Another serious obstacle are the trucks. Every time a truck comes towards you either from the front or from behind avoiding action is necessary. That means going to the edge of the road .Often it is impossible to know what lurks beneath the snow. These same truck will shower you with rocks. On our trip 4 times our windscreen got smashed by flying rocks. This road is unserviced . Halfway fuel and shelter is available. Strong winds are common which ads to the above mentioned problems. I suppose any thing is possible. Just make sure you have survival gear for those conditions should you get stuck next to the road. Never mess around in the Arctic it is dangerous. Cheers.

      I disagree with you on being foolish driving the Dalton Highway in winter. I understood exactly the consequence should anything go wrong. I had food for weeks fuel for cooking for months. Warm down sleeping bags and cold weather boots and clothing if needed. I also happened to over winter in Antarctica and had experience in survival under extreme conditions. At this time we had been on the road non stop for a year from South America to Alaska. I knew the Defender inside out as it operated under any condition imaginable.
