What’s it like to fly on World’s Shortest 53 seconds flight or fly on the World’s Longest 20 hours flight non-stop?
The shortest flight in the world is between Westray and Papa Westray, the flight distance is just 2 miles. These two islands are part of the Orkney Islands off the shore of Scotland. One way ticket cost 17 pounds for the 2-minute flight. Sometimes it can go as fast as 53 seconds from takeoff to landing, depending on the direction of the wind.
What’s the shortest jet flight in the world? Air France uses a widebody 777 to fly 16 miles from Brazzaville to Kinshasa. This is also the world's shortest international flight - A flight that lasts for an average of 14 minutes.
The longest non-stop commercial flight in the world happened during COVID in 2020. Air Tahiti Nui operated nonstop flights from Papeete, Tahiti to Paris, covering a distance of 9,765 miles made possible by a crew of four pilots with eastbound tailwinds.
Currently, the longest non-stop scheduled commercial flight is between Singapore and New York with Singapore Airlines. The route was launched in 2004 initially flown by A340-500 then it was re-launched in 2018 with A350-900 ULR. There is no economy class on this flight! The Pilot gave an interesting briefing about the 3 different routes this flight can take…
Qantas in 2025 will be launching the world’s longest flight between Sydney and London, covering a distance of 10,573 miles. I was onboard QANTAS project sunrise trial flight in 2019 from London to Sydney with seeing double sunrise. Qantas currently also flies the World’s second-longest flight between Perth and London and third longest flight between Melbourne and Dallas.

Hi Sam, The shortest flight I have taken was between Oakland, California and San Francisco, California on PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines) in 1973. I was on a business trip from Oakland to San Diego, California, with a stop in San Francisco. We took off, flew over San Francisco Bay and landed, about 4 minutes, highest flight point 1,000 feet. It was a Boeing 727, and I always liked using the rear stairway. I have watched all of your videos over the years, thank you so much for sharing.
Hi Sam, my name is Jojo, from Cagayan. my first shortest flight was back in 1987 flying out from my hometown to Cebu City on a PAL BAC 1-11. My longest one was in 2013; a PAL flight from San Francisco to Manila. By the way, thank you for sharing to us your love for aviation.
I’ve flown the stretch from Kinshasa to Brazzaville on Ethiopian Airways and it was about 12 minutes on a Boeing 787. The Addis - Kinshasa - Addis service has a short stop over in Brazzaville as they merge passengers from both cities to Addis.
The shortest flight I ever went on was from Whiteman airport to Burbank airport in Los Angeles. We took off and then were immediately cleared for landing about one minute later, because both runways are only a few miles apart. Total flight was about three to five minutes.
Non-commercial but proving flight for the B777 (200LR)... when it flew from LHR to HKG the long way round, taking 22 hours and 43 minutes...
I've flown the route between Papeete and Moorea in an old De Havilland Twin Otter with canvas seats. Only one pilot, sitting on the right side, with his window open and his arm resting on the sill, like he was driving a car. The old wooden ferry serving the route sank (it was recovered and is now a restaurant over on the leeward side of Moorea), so now it's air service. We departed from a small building near the end of the runway at Papeete's F'a'a'a airport and could see the Moorea runway from the ground. Time in the air? 7 minutes. Very cool! Unfortunately, like the sinking of the ferry, flight 1121 departing from Moorea on 9 August 2007 went down, with the loss of all 20 souls aboard. So sad.
That was really an adventure. Thank you.
I was on the same flight in 85 but can't remember what aircraft we were on
If the plane had the canvas sling seats (like a director's chair) and a huge tubular Y yoke (single control yoke, Y'd to both pilots) , it was a Twin Otter.
The shortest flight I have ever took so far was 40 minutes from OGG to HNL on a Boeing 717 operated by Hawaiian Airlines, the longest was 15.5 hours from HKG to DFW on a Boeing 777-300ER operated by American Airlines. I have never had a chance to fly in a turboprop aircraft, and this is on my bucket list.
Shortest flight I've been on was Geneva - Zurich which is only about 40 minutes. The longest was London to San Francisco
Hello Sam. Great idea to cover the shortest as well as the longest flights ever made. Undoubtedly very interesting. For my part, unfortunately, I don't have much to share. Although aviation fascinates me and I enjoy learning new things about it, I only had the pleasure of flying it twice. Although both flights were extremely identical (one way and the other return) the duration of both was different (a difference of a few minutes), that is, one of them was the longest flight I have ever experienced and the other it was the shortest flight I have ever experienced. The longest flight was a flight from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto (OPO), Portugal to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna (BLQ), Italy, on a Boeing 737-8AS operated by Ryanair, which took approximately 2h 50min. The shortest flight was a flight from Milan Bergamo Orio al Serio Int'l Airport in Milan (BGY), Italy to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto (OPO), Portugal, again on a Boeing 737-8AS operated by Ryanair, this flight lasted about 2h 30min. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this sharing Sam, even though it might seem a little pointless... hahah. Keep up the good work Sam.
Nice one, Sam. I was expecting to see DXB to AKL and DOH to AKL flights in the list too.
Hi Sam,
The shortest scheduled flight in the Southern Hemisphere is from Tonga to E'ua TBU-EUA, distance 15 miles. Flight time is 3 to 5 minutes. Currently served by a Harbin Y12, absolutely worth the trip if you ever get to the Kingdom of Tonga.
Cheers Eric
My shortest ever flight was 30min from Detroit to Put-In Island in Lake Erie. It was in a helicopter.
My longest ever flight was 14hrs from Toronto to Shanghai.
In March 2024 I'm flying from DFW-SYD, which is 17hrs long.
I know someone who just flew the Singapore to New York yesterday and was not jet lagged. I flew the New York to Singapore with the layover in Frankfurt flight. It is a pretty good route as it is pretty chill and easy going.
Back in the Continental Airline days, I flew their shuttle from Houston Hobby to Houston Intercontinental. That was about a 23 min flight if I remember correctly. Currently, the longest nonstop I've taken is IAD to NRT on United.
Sam, the Aer Arann flights between Connemara Airport in Galway and the Aran Islands are surely some of the shortest scheduled flights in the world?! Definitely no more than three or four minutes!
There are some pretty short routes in the South of England. Sky Bus to the Scilly's is 20 mins from Lands End and 30 minutes from Newquay. The view of the Cornish Coastline from the air is wonderful.
My shortest flights were the full 17 minutes long, each time between Kupang and Rote (Indonesia) with a Wings Air ATR 72-500.
I always like the 6-9 hour flights in business class from Europe to UAE and from there to south east Asia. Etihad or Emirates, both very nice. Love the 380 and 777. Flew with Qatar in January and it had a bar in the sky, awesome.
Sam, as you mentioned the shortest jet widebody flights: what is the longest scheduled turboprop regional aircraft flight in the world? Over ten years ago I flew from Berne BRN, Switzerland to Thessaloniki SKG in Greece on a Dornier Do328, about 3 hours block time. Fun flight, but my back hurt after that😂
Gonna take SQ23 and 24 in a few months. So excited! The longest I’ve taken was NY to Taipei at around 16 hours 11 mins
2 min flight in Kenya, between camp airstrips at the Mara game reserve on AirKenya. Between Kichwa Tembo and Musiara, dash 7 - dash 8
It's not as long as these, but my longest flight is IAH>NRT on a NH 787, but, my flight back NRT>ORD was more comfortable on their new designed 777s. I've also done AKL>LAX and LAX>RAR. Shortest flight has to be IAD>RIC, just following the I-95 highway at a pretty low altitude the entire time.
I flew between St. Louis and Salt Lake City, Tampa to Atlanta, Atlanta to Honolulu, and Honolulu to Kailua-Kona. These were done on separate trips. ATL-HNL was 9 hours, which was my longest real-world flight. Nowhere near Newark to Singapore
Hi Sam - I have flown:
LHR - SYD - LHR via SIN on BA & QF
LAX - DXB - LAX on EK
DFW - DXB - DFW on EK
SFO - SIN - SFO on SQ
LAX - BNE on QF
And in December I have SFO - DOH on QR and in January DXB - SFO on EK scheduled.
Keep up the great work on the videos!
My shortest flight was between Dusseldorf and Frankfurt in Germany. Flight time was about 30 Minutes. It was part of my journey from Milan and it was 130 Dollars less than a direct flight and took also just an hour more. It was operated by a Lufthansa Airbus A320-200. A fun fact is, that the high speed train ICE can reach 300 kilometers per hour on this route and it is a little bit faster than the plane 😅
My longest flight was from Barcelona to Santiago de Chile with an Iberia Airbus A330-200. It took almost 14 hours.
Hi Sam, love your posts! I used to fly the Hong Kong San - Fransisco route when it was serviced by a Pan Am short bodied 747SP, it was supposed to take 15 hours but sometimes it couldn't quite make it because the head winds or for other reasons the fuel load was insufficient and so it stopped en route, frequently at Okinawa going West, or Honolulu going East. Those were the days after 14 1/2 hours in the air looking out the window waiting for Hong Kong island lights to appear off the starboard side! Then the heart stopping landing at Kai Tak absolutely amazing!
Hi Sam!
Great video. About the question you ask, I only have one answer which was my shortest flight. The longest flight I've had was 12-13 Hours so pretty standard but the shortest flight I've ever done was from St Maarten to Saba. The flight was done in a DHC-6 Twin Otter run by Winair. Flight time is around 15 minutes and you get to land on the world's shortest commercial runway (which is on Saba). The flight is also international.
Hi Sam, the longest flight I did was 15hrs between Seoul Korea and New York on A380. Unfortunately I had a fractured shoulder and was traveling home to Toronto Canada for treatment. I had a window economy seat and never left it for the whole flight because I couldn’t get up with people in the other 2 seats very easy.
i'm flying the Singapore airlines Sin-Ewr in October and absolutely looking forward to this flight!
Did Kara and Nate let you know they were releasing the same video on the same day? LOL But that's okay, I'll watch both and likely get some very different information ;)
Great upload! We fly NY to Philippines once a year. SQ21 is our favorite way to go via Singapore, love that long flight! This year though, we'll be trying Delta's long haul service in partnership with Korean air, Newark NJ to Cebu Philippines via Incheon Korea. I'm sure it's not going to compare with Singapore airlines, but we're excited to see how Delta and Korean air do. 👋✈️
Qantas flight with the double sunset was just sublime and beautiful memory to keep hold off especially taking images of the Arctic - North Pole.
Very interesting as usual. Those long-haul flights are amazing!
Longest I’ve had is in this April, yyz to tpe. Due to the strong head wind, it took us 16.5 hiours to fly on a Eva air 773
The shortest flight I have flown is between my hometown Ningbo and Shanghai Pudong, around 150 kms. It was primarily used as a flight connecting passengers who are flying domestic or international from China Eastern's hub Pudong International Airport. It was a daily flight, however, it was suspended during the the zero-Covid era due to low demand. The flight between these two places has been restored recently. Now, it is actually the positioning flight for Shanghai Airlines' Ningbo-Budapest flight. The flight now only operates twice per week. The longest flight I took was Cathay Pacific's HongKong-London service, for around 12 hours.
Hi, Mr sam, I'm from Malaysia
My shortest flight is one hour domestic route in Malaysia..
My longest flight is five hours flight from Malaysia to Taiwan.. hope you see my comments.. you are the reason I love aviation
What in the world. I just saw Kate and Nate did the same shortest and longest flight….
I live in New York and have done a few very long flights. JFK-BKK was probably the longest, around 17 hours, back in 2007 when Thai Airways flew that route (which only lasted about 3 years). I spent some time talking to the charming FAs on that flight and they were really excited about it. I've also done JFK-HKG on Cathay Pacific and ATL-JNB on Delta, about 16 hours each. Shortest flight was Chiang Mai-Mae Hong Son in Thailand, about 20 minutes.
What another great video Sam. Hope your mum’s health is getting better from last week. It is a big gap difference between 53 seconds to 20 hours.
Shortest and longest flight. Very interesting to see the flight lasting 2 minutes to 17 hours
My shortest experience was domestic flight between Jessore and Dhaka in Bangladesh, around 15 minutes. And longest experience was two connecting flights for 12 hours each, first one Auckland - Bangkok, second Bangkok - Frankfurt, with connection of six hours in between, and layover in Frankfurt for 3 hours, and next flight from Frankfurt to Kiev 2,5 hours - totally 26,5 hours in the air, almost no sleeping, that was exhausting.
Just went on the worlds shortest flight between Westray and papa Westray this month! We got the exact same aircraft G-BLDV as you, and I actually sat in the exact seat u sat in for ur second flight in the plane! It was a great experience, and we got lucky because it was a bright and sunny clear day with no rain
I’m praying 🙏 for your mom Sam ❤
Awesome job sam with the vlog .
Hey Sam. For me the shortest was between Kampala to Nairobi via Sabena A330-300 for about 45min. and the longest was from Gatewick to Dar es Salam via British Airways 747-400 for 9 hours.
It was fantastic views, Thanks Sam.
Great video, nice recap of the flights :)
I flew between EZE and MVD on an American Airlines 777-200 when MVD was a tag. While the flight was about 27 minutes, it was still cool to fly it on a widebody aircraft that at the time had First, Business, and Economy class and was sold that way. There aren't many widebody flights that are less than 30 minutes where 3 classes of service are being sold.
I regularly fly seven miles one way to Caldwell Executive Airport from Nampa Municipal Airport, both in Idaho. I use a 1946 Ercoupe 415-C and it can be flown with the cockpit open or closed depending on the conditions.
Love all your videos Sam. Watching you for some years! Keep up the great work
Thanks Sam!!
Very informeded video thanks mr sam.
Thank you for information 🎉❤
The longest flight I have been on for now, is from LHR to PKX on a B777-200ER, which took 10 hours and 33 minutes. Even went from PKX to MNL and then to NRT it was wild.
Qantas flight attendants and captain was so lovely and responsible ❤❤❤
My shortest flight would have been between Kieta Aropa airport and Arawa (now closed) in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea which was just 19km in a Britten Norman Islander (a great workhorse plane).
My second shortest flight was between the islands of Tongatapu and ‘Eua in Tonga in the Pacific which is just 24km in a Twin Otter. As soon as we stopped climbing we started our descent. This was also my smoothest landing, there was no bump at all when we landed.
My longest non-stop sector so far is Sydney to Dubai on both Qantas and Emirates.
The shortest flight i‘ve been on is 35 minutes long from Hanoi to Vinh with vietnam airlines a321. The longest is a cathay pacific b777 from san francisco to hong kong and was 13 hours
I think my shortest flight was probably somewhere around 45 minutes- 1 hour HKG to TPE and my longest nonstop was from HKG to LHR at around 13 hours :)
That was amazing job Sam keep it going for more videos
Hello Sam! My shortest flight was from IGI New Delhi to Chandigarh around 25 minutes and the longest was from Abu Dhabi to Sao Paulo around 15 hours.
Well my shortest was from kci to ict it was take off get to cruisinglevel then start to descend. The longest was in " 91" in a braniff 747 flying out of DFW no stop to Honolulu that was 9 hours, but bonus I got to Johnny Cash and June on that flight. Really enjoy your videos they are fun and informative. Keep up the sensational work!
Hi Sam I enjoy your channel. In 2017 I flew Singapore Airlines A350 San Francisco to Hong Kong on first leg to Singapore 14 hours. In 2019 I flew Alaska Airlines B737 Juneau AK to Gustavus AK. Flight was 12 minutes 3500 feet max altitude. My friend upgraded to first class for $30 but the flight attendant never got out of her seat to give him a drink. We had a good laugh.
Sam Cui ur a real legend! I watch your video's almost every day and their so cool man. 🤩
Hi Sam, ThanksMuch for sharing !
Hey Sam, my longest flight was with Qatar from Doha to Dallas which lasted 16 hours and 27 minutes on Being 777-300 ER Business Class and was epic.
Great Vid Sam. Keep it up. I love Avaiton!!!
Hi Sam. Been following you for 6 years and love your aviation videos. I would appreciate it if you could make a video from India to Calgary or vice versa via Emirates Airlines.
Not forgetting to mention Turkish Airlines From Istanbul to Bucharest OTP with the a350-900 the flight is about 50 minutes
Hi MR Sam,
Am from Vietnam and I'm a big fan of you. I have watched a lot of your videos, which leave a strong impression on me. From your videos, I can learn a lot about aviation in the world. I hope in the future you will travel to Vietnam and have a chance to try some airlines in my country. Love all your videos Sam. Keep up the great work
Good video Sam!✈️🛫
did 19 hrs ferry flight on Singapore Airlines A340-500 from Newark to Singapore on 12 October 2010 after 9V-SGD landing gears were repaired. 4 flt deck crew plus one male flt attendant with cockpit door widely ajar throughout the flight. Flew over North Pole
Hi Sam
The shortest flight for me was Boston to Newark, NJ gate to gate was 35 to 40 minutes total. The longest flight I've taken was JFK to Tel Aviv, Israel, about 13 hours non-stop.
Interesting to see the captain lean the mixture on a 4 minute flight! My shortest flying GA in socal was riverside to flabob (3 miles) or riverside to Chino (9 miles) 😂
Kate and Nate also uploaded a video on this today! Coincidence?!
Great video Sam. Inspires me to travel to Sydney from London. 😮
Wow. Great video
Hey Sam. My shortest flight ever was from Little Rock National to Memphis International on my way to a military leadership school. Take off, a burp, and we are landing. My longest flights were either: DFW or Houston International to Tokyo, Narita for temporary active duty (TAD) to Yokosuka, Japan
The longest flight that I tooken is From Vancouver to Hong Kong by the Air Canada. Air Canada is impressive, but the price is still at the high level for no reason.
Hi Sam, The shortest flight I have ever taken was a puddle jumper on an ATR-72 in Myanmar from Mandalay to Kalemyo at ~20 minutes. The longest flight I have ever been on was a Thai A340-500 from LAX to BKK at 17 hours 20 minutes!
The shortest flight i ever had, was a turkish airlines 777-300ER from Tel aviv to Istanbul, great flight, but much to short
Thanks!
I have flown from Houston and SFO to Dubai a few times on the A380. Both of those are about 15 hours. The last time from Houston to Dubai the flight had few passengers. We were in Economy and the last nine rows had only six passengers when we started but some moved back as the flight continued. Many of us laid down in the center four seats and had a good sleep. I have a photo of our empty flight. After a layover in Dubai we always fly to Addis Ababa.
Those are all on my bucket list and can you give some tips on how to book first class for cheap? Thanks!
The shortest flight I've ever flown was from Adelaide to Sydney on a Jetstar A230 that flight took about 2 hours. The longest flight I've ever been on was from Abu Dhabi to Sydney on an Etihad Airways 777-300ER a long time ago. That flight was around 11-14hrs I think
Shortest flight for me was Louisville, KY, to Cincinatti on a Delta Embraer 145. 20 minutes gate to gate, with a distance right at 100 miles. My longest flight was Minneapolis to Tokyo Haneda on a Delta 777, right at 12 hours
I consider most of my flights at present (apart from the business trips within the US) most of which are between Los Angeles or San Francisco to Sydney or Melbourne most of them with Qantas naturally). I almost considered a recently a singapore airlines flight from the US to melbourne via singapore (purely because one of my wish list items is to spend a little time and look at Changi Airport and the Jewel (which i understand to be the best stopover terminal currently. I will admit that im looking forward to the idea of flying into the new Western Sydney International Terminal once that is completed in the next few years (maybe you could do a video on its progress and what innovative ideas it has planned). I believe the biggest change it will bring to Sydney flights is the change from any type of curfew for international flights, which could be a game changer for Sydney.
Great video 😊
Fantastic content as always.
Sam how long did it take you to get so much access to everything? Your contents are very informative and enjoyable to watch. Keep up the amazing work.
fascinating video!
My shortest flight was from Julius Nyerere International Airport Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Shekhe Abeid Aman Karume International Airport, almost 70km. The flight took 25min
The GOAT is back!!
Tinian to Saipan is extremely short also. Not sure if there is still scheduled service between those islands, but worth checking out.
My shortest flight was from Réunion Saint Denis to Mauritius. It took 25 mins (officially it takes 45mins but we had favourable winds) with Air Mauritius Airbus A330neo.
My longest flight was from Mauritius to London Heathrow which took 12 hours on Air Mauritius Airbus A340-300.
Definitely gonna try that flight in Japan
When I think of longest flights that contain an arrival or departure airport within the former Eastern Bloc, some that come to mind are between:
- Moscow and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
- Baku and Beijing
- Saint Petersburg, Russia and Beijing
- Saint Petersburg, Russia and Shanghai
- Saint Petersburg, Russia and Yerevan
- Paris and Yerevan
- Minsk and Yerevan
- Moscow and Vladivostok
- Warsaw and Dubai
- Warsaw and Tokyo
- Warsaw and Cancun
- Dublin and Burgas, Bulgaria
- Riga and Dubai
- Riga and Baku
- Riga and Malta
- Riga and Tivat, Montenegro
- Reykjavík and Riga
- Reykjavík and Prague
- Almaty and Seoul-Incheon
- Tashkent to Moscow
- Tashkent to NYC JFK
Great vid, Sam. You're a top man; I really enjoy your videos, bro.
Shortest - Birmingham UK to Bristol UK - not scheduled, Jet2 didn't have enough passengers on 2 return flights from these airports to Corfu in July 2021 so they combined the 2 services. Otherwise it's Birmingham to Dublin with Ryanair. Longest - London Gatwick to Atlanta with a connection to New Orleans (though my case took a later flight from Atlanta...) with Delta.
Hi Sam! I am one of your biggest fans of aviation. My shortest flight is from Singapore to Malaysia, Ipoh in a A320 200, and my longest flight is Singapore to South Korea in a A350 900. Hope we meet someday!
