    I don't think this is a skill vs strength like a lot of people are saying. Almost all the time, a general athlete will never beat a specialized athlete if they compete in the thing the specialized athlete specialized in. Or if 2 different specialized athletes compete. For example, a running back wont beat a sprint runner at sprint running. A soccer player wont run faster than a sprint runner. A soccer player will run faster in a more non-linear course. A body builder wont beat someone who trains purely for strength. Someone who specialized in push-ups will also beat the Mountain at push-ups. A boxer will lose to a kickboxer if they kickbox. Someone who trains for overall strength wont beat someone who specializes in arm wrestling. (At the top tier). I also guarantee you even if the pro arm wrestler uses none of his techniques, he will still win.

    • @jackwindensky5606
      @jackwindensky5606 8 років тому +31

      Guy Incognito Yeah I was a little unclear about that. What I should have added is that Devon actually has stronger specific muscles (for only the muscles used in arm wrestling). So he doesn't have to use any techniques or skills, Devon's arm wrestling muscles can just over power the mountain's.

    • @guyincognito2512
      @guyincognito2512 8 років тому +2

      Jack Windensky You still have to use skill and technique. The strength of the mountain is just as comparable if not greater. If he is using those muscles just 'specialized' in arm wresting that again skill comes down to being trained for many of years.

    • @jackwindensky5606
      @jackwindensky5606 8 років тому +17

      Guy Incognito I disagree with your statement "The strength of the mountain is just as comparable if not greater." I agree the mountain is overall stronger, but Devon has stronger arm wrestling muscles and therefore doesn't need to use any of the skills/techniques. This doesn't just apply to arm wrestling, I also guarantee you the mountain wont bench as much as power lifers, or squat as much them. Look it up, they bench more than twice as much as he can (ON AVERAGE FOR MUCH SMALLER GUYS AND IM TALKING 200 pounds lighter). So that's the huge advantage I'm talking about, someone who is 200 pounds lighter than the mountain, can bench more than twice as much as he can. Why? Because that's the power of specializing and the downfall of general strength. On the other hand, the mountain will beat him at pretty much anything else. It applies there to bench and here in arm wrestling.

    To all the people claiming that using your body is cheating - Read this:
    The arm cannot transform more force than it has. All the leaning they do gives them a biomechanical advantage, but it doesn't have a lot to do with bodyweight or core strength.
    It's mostly about dynamic and static strength. Dynamic is when you move weight, like a curl, while static is when you just hold weight, like an isometric curl. Your static is stronger than dynamic, so if you can curl 20 kg, then you can hold 24 kg. Leaning with your body while armwrestling simply allows you to use your static strength rather than dynamic.
    It's still your arms that have to produce the force, not your bodyweight or core muscles. Also, leaning is putting your body in a more natural position, thus greatly reducing risk of injury. Some moves like putting your elbow below the table have only been banned recently, so don't get confused by that.
    Technique is very important, but won't help you against a massively stronger opponent, except if he's clueless and/or really slow.

    • @Flornmonk
      @Flornmonk 8 років тому +17

      +DW Kern Did you read my entire post? It explains very well why you would lean in an armwrestling match. It's very much about safety and keeping your arm in a neutral position to reduce the chances of a spiral fracture which is what you will get if you arm wrestle the way you're talking about. Look at some related videos at the sidebar, dude. There you will see what arm wrestling looks like when both parties knows how to do it without injuring themselves. And it's funny when people tell me "The rules should be" when they obviously have no experience of professional arm wrestling at all. This is not the same thing as the arm wrestling you and I did at high school, this is an entirely different beast to master.

There was a lot of technique involved but that's why arm wrestling competitions don't interest me and probably why it hasn't garnered must support since it's beginning. So when you can use technique to defeat an opponent twice your size, sorry, it isn't about strength as much so technique as they call it in these arm wrestling competitions.
      I mean seriously, the dude is underneath the freaking table in this video...it's ridiculous and that's why pro arm wrestling will never be taking seriously.

      There certainly is a lot of technique involved, but if you look at how Devon trains his arms for arm wrestling, he has insane strength in those kinds of positions. He can't bench press or overhead press or do full ROM lifts like Thor can, but his strength in the relevant positions for arm wrestling is pretty insane, if not damn near unparalleled.

    I'm not downplaying his (Devon) strength. These are 2 separate sports, and there is merit to being able to beat one of the strongest men on the planet in an arm wrestling contest. But I guarantee if you asked Devon who was the stronger of the two- overall- he would say Halfthor.

    • @erkkiven6332
      @erkkiven6332 8 років тому +15

      +Advection357 Because lack of (static) strength. No stupid excuses. Believe what you see, there is no high science behind that. Technique in AW has same basic purpose as in every strength sport (like bench press): it only allows to use musclepower as efficiently as possible for the best result.
      0:51 is fair for both, Hafthor is hooking (technique!) well and tries to lean back but he just doesn't have enough strength so his arm simply opens up. Same as 1:08, he presses (technique!) with whole power but Devon holds it with his bicep like nothing. Check here: "hook training 2" by Larratt, over 80 kg up with one hand.. if it opens your eyes.
      And yes, I have armwrestled years with real table and rules, so I know something about this sport.

    • @Advection357
      @Advection357 8 років тому +9

      Erkki Ven So then Devon is stronger in the specific movement itself... because of training etc. Makes sense.. Also, big muscles don't always mean stronger.. that much I know :P

    • @erkkiven6332
      @erkkiven6332 8 років тому +2

      +Advection357 That is right.
      A basic mistake is to evaluate the opponent by the look. There are crazy strong arms which does not look so impressive. Still however, if you compare Devon's and Hafthor's forearms, there is no big difference in size + Devon's arms are like steel. AW is much about forearm strength.
      It is just enough you have more holding force (which is usually greater than dynamic / full motion) than your opponent has because the hand will follow the body as you move it. As Devon himself has said “Arm wrestling is all about locking your muscles and moving your body, and just hoping your muscles are strong enough to hold on,”

    • @ToprollPower
      @ToprollPower 6 років тому +99

      you can clearly see from 1:02 devon has superior arm strength, no body movement at all. if thor was stronger, he would've been able to pin devon. Stronger force wins. This is simple physics, what's so hard to understand?

    • @Patrick-zr8tv
      @Patrick-zr8tv 6 років тому +78

      Shiyu Lin, clearly you don't understand simple physics then. There's a lot more than just two vectors here because you havent got them pushing. They have their arms being torqued and that adds many many more variables. And the professional arm wrestler is most likely not as strong but his technique is far superior, he uses his entire body instead of just his arm. That's how he won.

    • @ToprollPower
      @ToprollPower 6 років тому +84

      I don't need you to talk about simple highschool physics to me like I'm a 12 year old kid. Devon has the stronger static arm strength in order for him to move his body and keep his arm stationed while Thor's arm extended. Equal and opposite force. If devon and thor's arms were both springs, devon's would have the higher spring constant, thus thor's arm would "bend" or extend sooner than devon's. So what if he uses his entire body? You're basically implying a 500lb man would win vs a 200 lb man if he used his body, well since 500 > 200.But If that 500lb man can't do a pullup, how's his body weight going to help if his arm can't handle his own weight?
      Now I won't deny there's no technique involved. However, technique only matters if the opponent is of equal strength. Thor doesn't do any armwrestling specific exercises, thus his armwrestling muscle groups are weaker than that of devon's. Devon has the stronger muscles and tendons specific to armwrestling, what's so difficult to understand? Just because Thor is strongest man in regards to his specific sport, doesn't mean he has the strongest every part of his body.
      Let me ask you this then:If strongmen are really the strongest in everything, how come an armwrestler has the world record strict curl of 249lb?

      Yea you'd need to break his arm in order to fully extend it since thats what happens to pro armwrestlers, the range of their arm and hand motion is restricted

    AN OPINION FOR NON PRO ARMWRESTLERS FROM A SWEDISH CHAMPION, VETERAN POWERLIFTER AND ENGINEER (MYSELF).
    THE REASON DEVON HAS TO ARC LEAN AND PULL Björnsson IS TO MAKE IT MECHANICALLY SAFE AS POSSIBLE TO ENSURE
    HE DOESN'T INJURE/BREAK Björnsson'S ARM, WHICH IS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF DEVON WERE TO PIN HIM FAST
    WITHOUT BODY ROLL.
    HE ALSO TELLS Björnsson TO KEEP LOOKING AT HIS OWN ARM AS THIS IS AN EASY WAY TO ENSURE THE HUMERUS DOES
    NOT SUFFER A TORSION LOAD WHICH WOULD CAUSE A SPIRAL FRACTURE IF NOT A BREAK.

    devon corrected thors technique mid match, potentially preventing a broken arm. great champion and ambassador for the sport
