I was lucky enough to be part of the production crew for the 2012 contest. We had 3 lay days while we waited for the swell. Except for the fact that my wife wasn't with me, it was a wonderful time. Truly magical. The valley, the waterfall, the reef, and most of all the people. So friendly and welcoming. So great.
Soo beautiful. I like to imagine that nearly anyone in the world who could live this life for a couple of years would perceive life in a way in which peace, brotherhood and love of nature become one's north star in a dramatically powerful way.
The Olympics is a horrible, ruinous proposition for any community, it's why we fought it for years here in Boston, USA. Power to the Tahitians for fighting that development.
I know, I was just commenting on a similar thought. These villages tend to disappear, there’s a reason locals sometimes try to keep these places “secret.”
Places like this stay the same when people from other cultures don't exploit their culture for own personal benefits and treat other travelers like they were there first
I've been to French Polynesia for nearly a month in 2010. The nature is so unique (Clear blue sea, beautiful lagoon, nice mountain to climb, a variety fish & birds) and the people are so kind and relax. You slow down your beat and live their way of life. Absolutely excellent food like mention in the video and it's not fully crowded, a real paradise.
I remember when I first met Poto thru Johnny boy , he told us about his home break . I could see him just going through some heavy barrels! Very powerful surfer.
If you go to Tahiti, make sure you get down to Teahupoo and be one of those people watching, and hooping and hollering from the shoulder (assuming like me you have no intention to surf it!). It's a fairly long drive but if there's a swell I guarantee you will have a moment that will stay with you for the rest of your life. The most exciting and beautiful place I have ever been to. The people are so nice too! 😃Everyone is so nice to each other while jostling for position in the most polite way possible.😃
There are some places in Nature that should not be fkt with. They deserve our reverence and respect...not commercialism. Why in the heck they would want to hold giant spectator events at a special place like 'chopes is beyond me. Want to charge big surf for the Olympics, take it somewhere already messed up. Only my opinion for what it's worth. Surfing for 15yrs shaped my life and soul. Landlocked and 76yo, I relive favorite waves and places everyday. Peace out to all my water brothers and sisters. May everyday be hollow, overhead, and shark-free. Love to all. Peace.
French Polynesia is nothing but amazing, great people, culture and nature, and coming from Hawaii it just feels like home... I will be back soon I'Orana!
Lets hope it stays undeveloped and that pure looking Tahitian Polynesian people retain their culture and identity and don’t sell out to be displaced by foreign blow in’s and multiculturalism and interbreeding.
Gotta respect the locals, there traditions , and there land ownerships. I'm glad the wealthy and corporate alike have not pushed them out. Hold your ground braddaz! Don't let it become a Waikiki. Aloha
Are all forgetting about Poto Vetea David... Junior World Champion.... pro surfer No disrespect to Michel he rips and has been a success pro surfer but Vetea carved the way for guy like Michel.....
Great video. What's with the weird English subtitles? The interviewees are speaking English but the subtitles don't match what they are saying. It isn't a voice recognition thing, the subtitles rephrase what they say, which seems kind of messed up.
The only thing this video fails to point out is how outrageously expensive everything is for mere mortals like most of us , the ones that don't surf professionally, don't have sponsors or connections on the island, and have to pay for a surf trip that requires some very deep pockets ...
They do point it out, and also make a point out of explaining very correctly that this allows for people to earn good wages. Everyone who travels to low cost countries and praises how cheap they are should be aware that these low prices are big part of how the low income levels (read: poverty) are sustained.
A 5 million dollar judging tower........... I mean talk about overkill. who is coming to judge? King Charles? Drone tech is off the charts now. whats wrong with using them and just have the judges on the shore with wicked Ultra 4k screens around
Great documentary. Fun to watch. Too bad you never learnd how to pronounce Teahupoʻo. But hey you are in good company. 90% of the commentators during the Olympics messed it up as well.
U know Maui n Papeete are related Brother and Sister ❗Maui is the Man ,, Papeete is the Sister of MAUI 💯 There are alot more connections 🌬 than we know ⛰🏔.. Kauli rips but 2 me Matahi iz da Man Frkn Chargez Ballz Out 🤯
I remember pronouncing it how it's spelled growing up and someone calling it cho--poo. He was so sure that was how it's pronounced. I've heard others pronounce it the same way since then. But the locals pronounce it how it's spelled and now I'm confused
This guy is not right this place got his first fame win Laird Hamilton surfed it for the first time nobody had served it before him that was known he was going through a divorce. There’s a big article on it. 25 years ago.
Let's be honest about all this "we're keepin' it real". Nobody wants their favorite spot to get overrun. These guys have a lot of advantages when it comes to keeping out the kooks (and yet, there are other videos where the wave is overrun with tourists). Why even allow the Olympics to come? Look in the corner of the video - Red Bull sponsorship - yeah, we're making money, but we need to make more. How can we do that? "We're not in a poor country guys." What does that mean? We make enough to fly around the world when we feel like it? Marketing - nice promo video for Red Bull - selling a dream lifestyle to those who can only afford a can of caffeine.
I’m glad he’s a strong minded person and will not sell any piece of his land. That land is priceless.
Here in Aruba politics are mesing everthing cus it look like a mini miami to much construction 😢😢😢😢
A Fantastic untouched village. Always be proud of it and stay that way 🙏🙏👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

No mention of Mike Stewart and Ben Seversen being the first guys to surf there in the 80's
Soo beautiful. I like to imagine that nearly anyone in the world who could live this life for a couple of years would perceive life in a way in which peace, brotherhood and love of nature become one's north star in a dramatically powerful way.
Thank you for an amazing documentary! ❤
Thes no contest off tour videos are fantastic. Some of your best productions in awhile.
I really enjoyed this piece--conveying the spirit of Teahupoo in a harmony of lovely ambassadors.
It’s horrible that the Olympics is going to ruin the coral reef building a new spectacular tower which can compromise the famous wave
The Olympics is a horrible, ruinous proposition for any community, it's why we fought it for years here in Boston, USA. Power to the Tahitians for fighting that development.
How are they allowed to do that?
I saw am article saying that they are now using a cruise ship which will not be near the bay either to preserve it.
No its not
I know, I was just commenting on a similar thought. These villages tend to disappear, there’s a reason locals sometimes try to keep these places “secret.”
Paradise, so glad the locals are keeping it that way. Enjoy!
Teahupo'o / thank you for sharing/ it's a village that has ❤/spirit
Definitely does!
This channel has 🔥 content. Keep these coming!

Tahiti, My number one Bucket List
I have been looking to go to French Polynesia in the next year and this was very insightful.
Never Let Developers Ruin Your Paradise
Good luck and respect to the locals for not allowing bebek to ruin their paradise.
I'm from the Pacific Islands of PALAU ! 🇵🇼 Awesome video !!! 👏 👏 👏 💯

@saveteahupoo Power to the Tahitians for fighting the making of a new tower on the reef
Yeah, it would be a sane decision since it wouldn't hamper the judges work.
Thank you folks for the great video! I love pristine Moorea & the wonderful people! Aloha ke Akua, Michèle On Oahu
You and Zeke together are freaking awesome!!
Loved this!!
Produce directed, and Director of photography was spot on for this doc. Cheers to the crew for the wonderful work. 🙌🏼🤘🏼
Yes. Keep Teahupoo. Teahupoo.....🤙🤙🤙
I remember when I first met Poto thru Johnny boy , he told us about his home break . I could see him just going through some heavy barrels! Very powerful surfer.
Been to the islands in 2012. Magic.
I paddled every morning at 5am to reach Haapiti. It was worth it. Got spooked by the odd shark fin passing right in front of my board.
Excellent video thanx

Let them go somewhere else leave this piece of surf heaven alone Laird my heart goes out to you ❤
I lived in Tahiti, in Bora Bora, for 18 months back in 1996/1997… it was magical.. a very special time in my life… 😛
RESPECT 💙
French Polynesia is nothing but amazing, great people, culture and nature, and coming from Hawaii it just feels like home... I will be back soon I'Orana!
beautifull documentary
Lets hope it stays undeveloped and that pure looking Tahitian Polynesian people retain their culture and identity and don’t sell out to be displaced by foreign blow in’s and multiculturalism and interbreeding.
If he owns it, why is he letting the Olympics ruin it with a new reef-destroying mega tower?
Of course the Olympics would want to do that to such a beautiful place
Seems to be a pattern with the surf tour and developers. The WSL could go away and the brands can pay for their own contests.

Forgot to mention Mike Stewart and friends that first rode the place in the 80s🤥
Thanks for watching DIRT with Josh Rosen
I can see they Take advantage of the situation with those prices.....i'm not surprised.
Gotta respect the locals, there traditions , and there land ownerships. I'm glad the wealthy and corporate alike have not pushed them out. Hold your ground braddaz! Don't let it become a Waikiki. Aloha
the locals rip, and were very nice to me. i paddle into some heavy stuff, chopes is scary if it huge and the pack is sitting deeper pushing the limits
Its crazy this surfers start surfing in teahpoo at like 12-15
This place is one of the most beautifull in the world, and Olympic games will destroy it ...
Good video, and good waves.
The sirens of da island be calling me hard to come heal out der bruh
Best thing in the world, don't allow the corporate world to come in and ruin everything.
Are all forgetting about Poto Vetea David...

It's fantastic that they resist development. Kudos to one and all of them.

Always thought it was pronounced chopooh? Howd that happen?
It's still tchopoo
Beautiful
That was a good watch eh
💪💪💪

It's Tey-ah-who-poh-oh.Aloha
You sound literally identical to Warren Miller's son- wild tbh

That's probably also part of what keeps Tahiti from becoming Bali..
Which is why Teahupoo might keep it's charm, and it's eco system..................
That’s probably what preserves the place. If you want to wreck something good , share it!
Moorea is so sick
Keeping the 'corperate commercial circus' out , is the best investment in their future
Cool vid on how guys from England expropriated Polynesian peoples land.
Tay ah who poe oh, though locals seem to ignore the second o
A 5 million dollar judging tower........... I mean talk about overkill. who is coming to judge? King Charles? Drone tech is off the charts now. whats wrong with using them and just have the judges on the shore with wicked Ultra 4k screens around
Jobs…
The Olympics has zero business coming in such a tight magical protected community.
Shame on France as usual..
Mike Stewart???
7:09 ah the beauties of imperialism
I want to give money but I don't want to give it through ActBlue. Is there another group collecting for her?
Merci RedBull 🙏

Great documentary. Fun to watch. Too bad you never learnd how to pronounce Teahupoʻo. But hey you are in good company. 90% of the commentators during the Olympics messed it up as well.
Americans. Nothing is healthy. Listen to the vocal fry
They speak English, French and Tahitian. They speak better English than we fo in Hawaii. In Hawaii we just speak pidgin broken English.
WE ARE KANAKA! WE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE! THAT'S WHY IT' CALLED THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM!👍👍😇
Wicked video
Why is surfing even in the Olympics in the first time 😂
If you learn to surf these waves, any wave around the world will be an easy surfing.

Time for future entrepreneurs to start new companies.

If it's hard to pronounce, you can just call it chops. That's what the locals call it.
These people pay obscene amounts of taxes, and the state wont let them protect their own property? Thats a shame.

To bad it's about to be steam rolled by the Olympic games
looks a bit mushy that teahupo'o wave
I want that food.

Moore a is Home!
american plan is: 3 cups of coffee everyday.
european plan is: 2 cups of tea everyday.
So TAHITIAN plan is: No Tea No Coffee No Day. No Way Go Away.
No Olympics Tahiti !!!
This is a video about selfishness and ownership of nature, humans aren’t custodians of this land, they’re just inhabitants
Teahupo'o say it right ....
Why hasn’t Red Bull sponsored Nathan Florence yet?🤔
Maybe he doesn't want to be sponsored by Red Bull and just wants to do his own thing, like making great surf vids and sharing 'em up on UA-cam.
